Building With People For People: The Unfiltered Build Podcast
When you design and build a web application for scale, you need to make a lot of decisions and small details can add up to create massive impact. So when you build a web application how do you know what framework to use, which cloud provider to choose or database solution to use? Relational, Document, Graph? You may also need users to login to your site but how do you authenticate them? Do you use sessions, JWTs, or third party authentication? How do you scale and support millions of users? We are joined today by an engineer whose passion it is to solve these exact questions and come up with solutions for designing scalable software systems. Our guest today loves tinkering and building products from scratch. Growing up he was fascinated with Leonardo DaVinci and the machines he built, watching many history episodes on the topic. His love for software started over 10 years back when he took a web dev course on HTML, CSS and VB script where he built a website that helped others create websites, it was a “create your own website” type website. He went on to earn his degree in computer science from University of Pune in India. He started off as a UX engineer, after which he switched to exploring the Data Science domain for a brief period and slowly migrated to designing scalable systems for startups and other companies. Currently he is working as a Software Consultant at a company named Sahaj.ai When our guest is not designing software or architecting solutions he is traveling, reading, watching movies, playing soccer and cooking. He is a big foodie and his favorite meal to make is Biriyani (a rice dish). In his words he was born a nomad and wants to explore the world. This quote sums up the philosophy of today's guest on the Mile High Podcast: “Great things in business are never done by one person. They're done by a team of people.” - Steve Jobs You'd be hard-pressed to find a chiropractor who draws a line in the sand relative to the chiropractic principle as definitively as Michael Viscarelli. He opened up private practice in 2012 in Golden, Colorado, grew to 300 visits a week within a month, and increased to 1,200 visits a week within his first year. He built a seven-figure practice in one year. Dr. Michael and Tara Viscarelli, founders of ADIO Chiropractic, believe in contributing to the overall health and quality of life of each of their practice members. They believe that health is our number one asset and that nothing about the body is an accident. He's been restoring lives one adjustment at a time in the Golden, Colorado, area. He's been showing his practice members that they can stop “just coping” with life and start living it. Now, he wants to show YOU how you can make a profound impact on the lives of YOUR practice members. Michael co-founded Amped and supports as a member of the IFCO. He's donated to many chiropractic schools and has mentored nearly 1,000 offices that have opened across America. When there is a renaissance for the principle, you'll know that Michael Viscarelli is one of those who sparks it. You can find out more about Michael at ampedconnect.com. In this episode you'll hear: Why Michael chose the Chiropractic profession What fuels his energy Why serving the principle is his focus How he loves seeing docs go further, faster And MUCH more! Enjoy this content-rich episode with Dr. Michael. He's a big part of why Colorado is a hub to the Chiropractic principles. Be sure to visit the hub in September 2023 at Mile-High 11. How To Achieve Every-Day Excellence, with Joe Templin Today's I'm speaking with Joe Templin, the author of the book “Every-Day Excellence,” Kindle's #1 new release in Professional Development. He is also an expert on Human Kaizen, or in other words, Human Improvement. Stay tuned! Human Kaizen and Analogies [01:17] Joe is an author and a human Kaizen expert. He has a fundamental belief that people can get better through consistent effort, and through it, we can unlock our excellence. He tells us how he gives an analogy to his teenage sons that our lives can be comparable to video games. There's the main quest, but there will be side quests along the way. Through these side quests, you can accumulate resources, get more insight, and obtain allies. Sometimes you need rest to help yourself recharge. He quotes Steve Jobs: “You can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward.” Side Quests [05:12] Joe worked for the Department of Defense, making high-energy optical systems in 1995 while he was a graduate student. He was out there building skills. He earned his first and second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. This helped him push his limits. He quotes Rocky Balboa: “It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” You need to practice your fundamentals repeatedly and then understand that you need to perform. Habits [11:49] Habits, whether they are good or bad, are determining points of your future. Joe says that many people have bad habits, one of which is not reading books. He says that 50% of the average American has only ever read one or fewer books a year by the time they graduate. Recommended Books [12:31] Joe has written his book: Every Day Excellence and says that anybody who wants to go out on their own needs to read The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It by Michael Gerber. He also recommended the books: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear, The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday, The Daily Laws: 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature by Robert Greene. Having Vision [23:29] Joe quotes the bible saying that people without a vision will perish. You need to have a big goal and start putting together the plans to reach it. Joe's Advice [36:39] Joe says that even if your business might be in the dumps right now or operating under immense financial, emotional, or time constraints, you should understand all the bad things about it but do not give up hope. If you're going through hell, you have to keep on going. If you've got a plan, alter it and adjust accordingly as things change in the environment and the economy. If you understand, believe hard enough, never give up hope and do the work every day, you will succeed. Have that vision but do the work and never give up. I took every show that came my way. I was hungry to prove that I deserved to be an artist worth seeing live. I got told by fellow artist to relax you are going to strain your audience. That never rang true for me. I'll be honest, I didn't know what doing shows so often would do for me but I knew that the reason I started to do music was to perform, so I was in my joy. I just kept taking shows. The audience that showed up kept growing! Then I got a call from @devin and @jade asking if I would be down to join their tour. That's when it all made sense. This is what I was preparing for. That call was Confirmation to never 2nd guess my gut. In the words of Steve Jobs - “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever” NOW WHAT CITY IS ABOUT GO CRAZY! I'm tryna see something
Everyone thinks they innovate, but most of the time it's just improvement, shared former Apple Senior Vice President of Retail Operations Ron Johnson at his View From the Top talk at Stanford GSB. "To win in business, you have to let the imagination run." During his conversation with Stanford GSB student Amanda Facelle (MBA '14), Johnson also shared the biggest life lesson he learned from Steve Jobs: "You have to be willing to start again."
Today is Macintosh Computer Day, always celebrated on January 24, because that's the day in 1984 when the very first Macintosh computer was introduced to the public. The 1984 Super Bowl commercial is HERE. During the past 24 hours, the United States Geological Survey reported 13 earthquakes in the lower 48 states and Alaska. On this day in 1935 the first canned beer, "Krueger's Cream Ale," was sold by Krueger Brewing Co., an American brewer in Newark, NJ. Also on this day, in 1939, an earthquake in Concepcion Chile killed 30,000 people. Born on this day in 1939 in Clarkdale, Georgia, American country, pop, and novelty singer-songwriter Harold Ray Ragsdale, known professionally as Ray Stevens. I leave you with this quote from Steve Jobs: “You go to your TV when you want to turn your brain off. You go to your computer when you want to turn your brain on. Those are not the same.”
If you are like many of the overwhelmed healthcare leaders we talk with you feel stretched beyond your capabilities on a day-to-day basis. One of the ways you can have more energy, time and balance in your life is to establish boundaries. In this episode we explore why it’s important to set boundaries, how boundaries can lead to resilience and balance in your life, and how they are a form of self-care. Continually adding more to your plate and not taking anything off results in stress and overwhelm. While the COVID pandemic may have taken a few things off your plate, it may also have added so much more! During times like this it can also become increasing difficult to say “No”. “It’s only by saying ‘NO’ that you can concentrate on the things that are really important.”- Steve Jobs You are not always in control of what ends up on your plate or within your realm of responsibility as a leader. There are somethings you can control and that’s where you can put your attention when it comes to setting boundaries and beginning to flex your “NO” muscle. Identifying and managing any barriers you may have is an essential element of successful boundary setting. Thriving and resilient healthcare leaders are committed to setting and keeping boundaries, so they can stay focused on what matters most, achieve their goals, and experience greater success. You may or may not already realize this, but this episode is full of information that can help you gain more energy, time, and balance in your life! Gwyneth quotes from Steve Jobs: “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. We speak about 2020 and a quote by Steve Jobs “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future" . We can all agree that 2020 is going to be a memorable year for many reasons. I talk about the incidence that took place last week, the unfortunate death of Naya Rivera, NicoleTv and John Travolta's wife. I tell a short story about witnessing when a body was found in the park while I was taking my morning walk. I speak as well about the emotional roller coaster that I have been going through and the importance of a strong support system. Its important that during these times we really focus on our mental health.

Matt MacInnis is a founder and investor in Silicon Valley, and he’s widely seen as one of the best personal angel investors out there — combining his experience as a founder (and knowing what made his investors actually helpful and others unhelpful) with the insight into what spaces and products are on the rise. That’s his day job though. He is a profoundly deep thinker, an articulate leader, but most importantly, he’s honest. He’s seen all the ups and all the downs a founder can see, so you throw experience into that equation, and you’ve got a hell of a conversation. Some of our favorite quotes from the episode: "It is perfectly acceptable to go start a company with insane odds against you. If you understand the outcome will be beautiful, no matter what, thats the mindset you need to approach it with and it will be beautiful." "I could not be where I am today without the hard experiences I had to go through, and it sucked… but they were necessary." "That was the last time I put another person in the slot of alpha, on a pedestal, someone to emulate…" on his experience with Steve Jobs "You look around and think that everyone else has it figured it out — and they don't…and I am the first to admit that I’m faking it too." “I knew where I was strong and I knew where I wasn't, and I was fighting that instead of accepting it.” “When I sit down across from an entrepreneur…and they really want me to invest, and its not one I can invest in…They’re not answering “should Matt be an investor” while they're trying to answer “can I get Matt to invest in this?” — and these are vastly different questions.” “Don't win job offers. Go see if you test positive for that particular company or role and let “no” be as beautiful as yes because its the right thing. We are not as interested in truth as we are desire...”
“Sometimes failures or challenges force us to think out of the box and they can be blessings.” — John Ondrasik Millions of people gained solace and inspiration from the song Superman (It’s Not Easy), a worldwide smash hit that served as an unofficial anthem of healing following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In this episode, Brian interviews the voice behind that song and many others, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter John Ondrasik, better known as Five for Fighting. From song-writing, to producing, to performing, John has faced plenty of rejection and struggle on his road to success. He tells Brian how, today, he combines his life as a musician with working in his family’s fourth-generation wire manufacturing business and discusses themes of creativity, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. I had success at a late age.” — John Ondrasik “For me, it was a 15 year overnight success story…I appreciated the 15 years of getting the door slammed in my face. Unless you have that, you can sometimes think it’s all about you.” — John Ondrasik “Focus on relationships…persevere, and then have your core values.” — Brian Buffini “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” — Steve Jobs “You have to be practical…but you also need to take strategic risk, and you need to be honest with yourself.” — John Ondrasik “You’re going to be faced with challenges in your career, and you can either accept that this sucks or you can say ‘How can I turn this into a silver lining?’” — John Ondrasik “Sometimes failures or challenges force us to think out of the box and they can be blessings.” — John Ondrasik “Music can matter in ways no other medium can.” — John Ondrasik “Part of what makes us successful is pushing the goal posts and strategizing for the future, but if all we do is that, what is the point?” — John Ondrasik “If your whole self esteem gets wrapped up in what you do, at some point it’s going to go backwards.” — John Ondrasik “I’ve met people with real challenges and I’ve learned that most of us have no problems. We think we have problems, but we don’t.” — John Ondrasik “Life moves so fast. Living your life with passion is important... having a certain lust or gusto for life will allow you to enjoy all that this beautiful world provides you. But Passion in your work is just as important. While it might not be practical when you are young or in school, taking your passion and turning it into your vocation is VITALLY important to your happiness. Doing what you love should always be a part of the big picture... even if it only starts as a side-gig or an after-hours hustle. If you don't LOVE your job, then find a job doing what you love and take the steps to get that job. “The secret of joy in work is contained in one word – excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.” Pearl S. Buck“Yes, I’ve made a great deal of dough from my fiction, but I never set a single word down on paper with the thought of being paid for it … I have written because it fulfilled me. Maybe it paid off the mortgage on the house and got the kids through college, but those things were on the side—I did it for the buzz. I did it for the pure joy of the thing. And if you can do it for the joy, you can do it forever.” Stephen King“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, go out and sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures. Sweep streets like Handel and Beethoven composed music. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.”Martin Luther King, Jr.“The law of work seems unfair, but nothing can change it; the more enjoyment you get out of your work, the more money you will make.”Mark Twain“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Steve Jobs“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.” Maya Angelou“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing, you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.” Johnny CarsonBook to Read: Small Giants: Companies That Choose to Be Great Instead of Big - https://amzn.to/2p4i3YHTool to Try - Fiverr - http://www.fiverr.com/s2/929a84b236Thanks for joining us on Inspired to Greatness, please check back with us each and every week for fresh tips and new guests. In this episode Rob discusses the three things in business that are more important to people than money and how you too, can embrace these things and bring them to your staff and employees The three things that are more important to people than money are: Progression - This has to be lead by you, and staff need to feel like they are progressing their career, help to progress their knowledge, personal development, experience and salary. When there is no hierarchy or path, people can't see the progression, They can't see where they will be challenged and learn new skills. Progression can simply be a change, Recognition - Nearly all the issues in a company can be down to recognition, a lack of recognition can cause unhappy staff, de-motivation, gossip and sabotage. Ensure to recognise and praise everyone even those that aren't the star employees. Become a perveya of love, recognition and praise, because people need it. Autonomy - Noone wants to be micromanaged, smart people want to be given a little too much to do, and that's to challenge them. Make sure they have the resources to do it and then the trust, faith and autonomy from you to step up to the plate and over deliver. If you don't have people motivated by that you're surrounded by the wong people. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you give your staff Progression, Recognition and Autonomy you can pay your staff up to 20% less, as they will be fulfilled in their roles. Money is 4th on the list of most important things for people, if you give them Progression, Recognition and Autonomy they will be happy and motivated. Give a path to everyone you influence, customers, clients, followers and fans, friends and family. Give them a route to progress, personally, professionally and financially. Your Creative Sparks: True CONNECTIONS are deeply felt and create a feeling of FOREVER in an instant. The best PR & MEDIA strategy is NOT about the perfect PITCH. It’s about asking “How can I help this person? At the heart of everything is RELATIONSHIPS. Spanning the vast time and space that is Manhattan, Lobsterbird explores what constitutes a truly magical connection with the Super-Connector himself, Chris Winfield, who has morphed his PR and Media business-building strategies into an all-out mission to connect great people with other great people, amazing opportunities, and their greatest potential. Your Travelogue There are two types of being uncomfortable. The first can work in your advantage: My trainer pushed me outside what I thought was possible. The second can trap you in an unproductive life and work: I hate doing this, but I just keep doing it. [4:45] True connection does not come from seeing just the shiny, filtered, happy part of us. That perfect highlight reel actually keeps us dis-connected. Knowing what someone needs help with leads to real connection. Using this strategy turns the often perceived hierarchy of PR and Media on its head. [9:20] Money and success doesn’t fill the hole of feeling “less than.” Meeting people and being very open brings the realization that everyone struggles with the same things. [12:22] Making organic, extraordinary connections led to Chris becoming the “Unfair Advantage” in his Mastermind group, which ultimately led to the launch of his current business: teaching others how to cultivate genuine, win-win connections for themselves. [16:40] Chris’s favorite quote from Steve Jobs: “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards,” became the calling card for his new mission: How can I help people connect the dots faster? [19:09] Unfair Advantage is built on a business model that does NOT scale. Chris has cultivated a dynamic, supportive community by picking up the phone, being curious, and taking a genuine interest in people. [23:03] Next Unfair Advantage Event is May 2-3 in NYC. If you want to make connections that matter, go connect some of the dots to your greatest opportunities ever. Craig Ballantyne, reflecting on his life, quotes Steve Jobs: “You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking back.” Connecting the dots in his own life, Craig observes, “If you had told me when I was 18 what I’d be doing at 40, I would have looked at you as if you had two heads! Helping people on the internet, making workout videos and sharing them online, writing web articles about the science of exercise – none of these options existed a generation ago.” Today they’re how he makes his living.
