It can seem impossible to break out of the cycle of dieting and binging, but health coach Isabel Foxen Duke found the key at the end of what she calls her “final binge.” And the answer isn't more dieting! Virgie and Isabel talk about “radical hopelessness,” why Nutella is the ultimate anti-diet food, and why dieting - not binging - is the real coping mechanism.
This week we are talking about binge eating and how to feel relaxed around food with Isabel Foxen Duke. Isabel has been influential in both of our journeys to recovery from dieting and also our progression into becoming anti-diet coaches and developing our understanding of binge eating. She has an incredible amount of knowledge about food and how restriction of food ultimately affects our ability to trust ourselves with what we need and want. In this episode, she shares her knowledge and over a decade of experience with us on how to truly understand why we feel so out of control around food. Isabel Foxen Duke is the creator of Stop Fighting Food, a Video Training Series & Master Class for women who want to "stop feeling crazy around food." After years of trying to overcome binge eating disorder through weight-normative approaches, Isabel discovered the critical role of acceptance, surrender and social inquiry in the binge eating recovery process—and has been sharing her insights with clients and professionals ever since. A thought leader in the Intuitive Eating and Body Positive movements, Isabel has been featured in publications like Elle Magazine and Refinery 29, and has been widely praised by influencers like Ricki Lake and Lena Dunham. Isabel lives in San Francisco where she runs virtual group coaching programs for clients and professionals around the world. Diet culture is everywhere. NPR reported that in 2021, 50% of all New Year's resolutions in the U.S. were based on fitness, 48% were resolutions to lose weight and 39% of resolutions were to improve one's diet. We spend over $30 billion on diet products annually and an estimated 45 million Americans diet every year. 85% of women have, at one point in their life, been on some kind of a diet, struggled with body image, or both. And many women who struggle with alcohol also have a complicated relationship with food and their bodies. Our universal immersion in diet culture can also unconsciously sabotage our efforts to stop drinking. When removing alcohol many women worry that they'll ‘transfer their addiction to food or sugar' or try to diet at the same time they are working to stop drinking. I invited Isabel Foxen to come on the podcast to talk about diet culture, the socialization of women to believe that being thin equals being healthy, attractive, disciplined and worthy, and the impact of it all. Isabel is a thought leader in intuitive eating and body positive movement and the creator of Stop Fighting Food, a video training series and masterclass for women who want to stop feeling crazy around food. After years of trying to overcome binge eating disorder through weight normative approaches, Isabel discovered the critical role of acceptance, surrender, and social inquiry into binge eating and the recovery process, and has been sharing her insights with clients and professionals ever since. Isabel Foxen Duke shares on PHIT for a Queen Her first diet was as a child encouraged by her pediatrician from that point felt she was always in a dieting cycle. Finally, after years went to treatment for binge eating learning that binges are caused by dieting. The constant pursuit was the problem in itself. We must separate health from weight. Making a wellness mask for vanity. There is NO evidence that larger bodies cause chronic illnesses. “Blaming poor health on fatness is like blaming lung cancer on yellow teeth” Linda Bacon Culturally we have given people the opportunity to make dieting a moralistic value. We now know that dieting leads to bias thus making weight a status symbol Stop saying healthy when you mean skinny Trying to lose weight by dieting is like trying to win money with the lottery Most people that have lost weight on a diet have had some rebound. We must address our own weight bias I was taught to fear weight gain and thin was rewarded Prioritize mental health as part of your health equation! My mental health is avoiding the judgment of my food and body. I am so excited to share with you my guest interview with Isabel Foxen Duke. I have to admit to being a little bit of a fangirl of Isabel and her work. I have struggled through a lot of the stuff that Isabel is so brilliant with working with women on like weight-cycling, food issues, and emotional eating. She helps women stop feeling crazy around food. So, are you always on the diet wagon or waaaay the f**k off it? I myself have zero neural pathways around healthy thinking or belief systems as far as food goes. Sure, I’ve learned a few things through therapy and from doing the work, but I still am really early in my own weight recovery journey. I can guess that many of my listeners are in a similar boat. And that’s why I invited Isabel to the show. She shares her expertise on letting go of the struggle with food and also offers great insight on weight recovery and its effect on relationship dynamics. Show Highlights Isabel shares openly about her experience with diet culture starting at the age of 3 years old (yes, you read that correctly - she was put on a diet at the age of 3) (5:42 seconds) Letting go of the struggle and how Isabel came to the work she is doing now (21:22) Surrendering to ‘bottoming out’ and understanding that eating a cookie when you are sad is a-okay (28:55) The delusion of control and how recovery is the process of surrendering over and over again (29:27) What surrendering actually looks and feels like (32:00) Weight restoration, understanding that gaining weight when you stop dieting is completely healthy and recovering from post-diet trauma (33:31) Shame over clothing sizes, body image issues and cutting through your own B.S. rationalizations (45:19) Healthy weight gain post-recovery, its effect on relationships, and being with someone who does not support your recovery (47:20) Dealing with family and friends who you can’t divorce and do not understand your weight recovery journey (1:03:20) Learn More About Isabel: Isabel Foxen Duke is the Creator of Stop Fighting Food — a free video training program for women who want to "stop feeling crazy around food." Isabel Foxen Duke is a force: she gets right at what she perceives is imprisoning women in the cycle of dieting and then, inevitably, binging. She fearlessly calls out restriction as the root cause of all binging, and discusses what is rarely talked about in the conversation about women and food: the possibility that our bodies have a weight that they want to be, and that trying to manipulate that will inevitably get us into trouble. In this interview, we discuss: Why women are so afraid of gaining weight Why thinness has become the ideal of attractiveness in our cultural milieu Why binging is a sign of health Is food really addictive? The difference between what Isabel teaches and "Intuitive Eating" How we can live surrounded by cultural stigma and still have a happy and fulfilling life And so much more. A few years ago I was a mess around food and my body. My entire life revolved around what I was eating next. If I wasn't preoccupied with my next meal, I was thinking about what I'd eaten earlier and what that meant for what or how much I'd allow myself to eat later. On the rare occasion I wasn't thinking about food, googling gluten-free-dairy-free recipes, or checking out another vegan restaurant's menu I was thinking about my body and how I was terrified of it changing in a way I wasn't comfortable with. I'm embarrassed to admit all of this but that was my internal reality until I found the work of today's repeat guest Isabel Foxen Duke. Isabel showed me there's another way to live. She taught me why I and so many people fall into an obsession with thinness and therefore dieting and consequently food, all as a result of thinness as a standard of beauty in our culture and the pervasive diet culture that has created. She taught me about fat phobia and how I had internalized it. She taught me about intuitive eating and deconstructing my diet mentality to listen to my body's hunger and fullness signals. She taught me about emotional eating and how it's not wrong, rather it is merely a coping mechanism and a response to years of deprivation with food. She taught me to diversity my hobbies away from wellness alone and to instead focus my attention on my career, creativity, and relationships. Most of all, she helped my to finally stop fighting food and work on making my life as a whole really beautiful, not just my body. We talk about all this and more in today's very long, robust episode. As I mentioned in the inro, I took Isabel's flagship program in 2014 and it honestly really helped me. In today's episode, you'll hear Isabel's top 3 tips for creating joy in life, work, and love, which are: 1. Embrace uncertainty in life. Remember every morning that you have no idea what's going to happen. Shed yourself of expectation. Let that be a thrill. It won't all be figured out right now, and it doesn't need to be. 2. Don't resist the moment. Allow what's happening to happen. Sink in and get comfortable with whatever human experience you're having. 3. Practice the skill of enjoyment. Practice enjoyment as an active verb, rather than a passive one. With Isabel's wisdom and my curiosity, we were guided into such a beautiful, spiritual conversation. Isabel, thank you so much, Sister, for showing up so big on today's episode. I'm forever a fan! Have an amazing weekend you guys and don't forget to connect with Isabel. She's amazing! If you would love to break the shackles of yo-yo dieting once and for all, or to finally put an end to your diet spiral, you will really gain a lot from today's show, with Alex's super smart guest, Isabel Foxen Duke, a Health Coach who graduated with Alex, from the Institute For Integrative Nutrition. Listen in today and find out about Isabel's outlook on body positivity and how you too can develop a positive outlook towards your own body image. Isabel was put on her first diet at around three years of age, by her pediatrician, who clearly had no idea how it would affect her later in her life. That was the beginning of what would become a life long obsession for her. When Alex met Isabel, she was just kicking off with her program, Stop Fighting Food. Now, Isabel helps women to stop feeling crazy around food, which is how she felt for most of her life, until she began to learn many things that are not taught conventionally, about emotional and binge eating and the ways that they affect women. Isabel explains that the sad reality of many dieters lives is that with any rigid attempt to control your body, it will only be a matter of time before you violently lose control and start eating anything that you can get your hands on. She vividly describes the cycle of determination to diet, followed by 'losing it' and falling off the wagon. On today's show, she talks about how it felt for her, when she fell off the wagon and the about the physical and emotional pain one experiences as a result of yo-yo dieting. She also discusses how landing up in treatment for Binge Eating Disorder was the beginning of her journey towards learning what it means to have a health-full and balanced relationship with food and how this learning involved un-learning much of what she had been conditioned with, through being so engaged with the diet industry for so many years. Listen in and find out more. You can read the full show notes at www.alexandrajamieson.com/135.

Many people silently suffer from the fear of food and it has nothing to do with how much they weigh or their clothing size. Fighting against food is like fighting against oxygen. And in reality, food is our friend - not the enemy. The same is true about appetite. We’ll do just about anything to control our appetite. Appetite is less about control and more about listening to your body. Read More The post 005 – Stop Fighting Food appeared first on AHHH Lifestyle.

She is currently working on a book and an app that are also focused on the principles of leading a balanced, healthy lifestyle. I was really wanting to talk with Jordan after hearing about her on Good Morning America when she left her vegan lifestyle to pursue a diet that was more tailored to her needs. She received such harsh backlash from some of her followers, that I couldn't even imagine how tough that transition might have been. It's hard enough to make life-changing decisions on your own, but it's so much more tough when you're in the spotlight and people expect certain things from you. I'm really excited to release this episode because I think EVERYBODY will learn something that can be applied to their own life and experiences. Jordan is so incredibly open and honest, that I think she'll say many things that will stick with you. Her story is not one that you want to miss. Here's what we discuss in this episode: Why Jordan originally started veganism and how being labeled started to control mindset towards food, as well as her life The "aha" moments she experienced that really opened up her eyes to her anxieties about non-vegan foods, weight gain and animal ethics How the beliefs we create in our head overtime lead to invisible, counterfeit consequences Jordan's number one tip for those seeking recovery The importance of yoga for mind body awareness Follow Jordan on all her great social media channels: http://www.thebalancedblonde.com/ Instagram Twitter Facebook Pinterest I also had the utmost pleasure to be on her blog for a segment she's been doing called the Recovery Series. EPISODE 19: In January 2004, Jimmy Moore made a decision to get rid of the weight that was literally killing him. At 32 years of age and 410 pounds, the time had come for a radical change of lifestyle. A year later, he had shed 180 pounds, shrunk his waist by 20 inches, and dropped his shirt size from 5XL to XL. Since then, Jimmy has continued to shed weight and improve his health using a hight fat, low carbohydrate, Paleo diet. Jimmy Moore is the host of one of the highest ranked health podcasts, the Livin La Vida Low Carb Show, and the author of both Cholesterol Clarity and more recently, Keto Clarity. Jimmy managed to release both of these two books in under a year, and continues to surprise his friends, family and followers with his dedication to helping others. Jimmy has been one of my biggest supporters for the past two years. I would have had this interview with him LONG ago, but I wanted to get a little more comfortable with podcasting before I talked with him on my show to ensure that it was the best episode possible :) I can confidently say, I don't think we will disappoint. Here's a brief overview of what we discuss in this episode: Growing up with "crappy carbage" and how it led Jimmy to his discouraging 410 lb weight Dealing with your emotional baggage first, and then working on your relationship with food next An in-depth explanation on cholesterol & which foods are best/worst to eat for optimal levels The many benefits of ketosis and having a very high fat diet Why low carb is not a high protein diet (this is a crucial component of ketosis) The importance of loving yourself, especially if you're putting yourself out in the open like so many of us Links mentioned in this episode: Jimmy Moore and Dr. John McDougall CHIPMUNK version! Cholesterol Clarity Keto Clarity Jimmy's "Keto Eggs Recipe" (ummm, yum) [Tweet "Want to learn how to improve your cholesterol levels? Jimmy the @livinlowcarbman knows his stuff"] DON'T FORGET!
