In this moment, behavioural change specialist Shahroo Izadi discusses how to overcome imposter syndrome. Shahroo defines imposter syndrome as not being able to internalise your accomplishments, so that even the most successful people never feel as if they are enough. This is all linked to low self-worth, shame and guilt, coming from not being able to give yourself permission to accept that what others made find easy you find difficult. As you will need to change habits your whole life, Shahroo believes that you need to change the conversations you have with yourself, feeling smart, calm and proud of yourself so that you can reframe challenges to opportunities for showing your capacity. While growing up in a Muslim-Iranian household, Shahroo Izadi was given the freedom to carve her own path of faith. This journey has evolved into a belief system that champions kindness and self-compassion as powerful tools for personal transformation. In our conversation, we'll redefine not just the process of self-discovery, but also broaden the discourse on addiction recovery and the role of a higher power within ourselves. As we embark on this journey with Shahroo, we examine an array of practices that help us return to our core self - from breathwork and journaling, to exercise. We debunk the myth of a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to wellness and delve into the power of self-talk in reshaping our habits. Through the course of our discussion, we'll also shed light on the impact of kindness on everyday life and how it can help break the cycle of perfectionism and overwhelm. In keeping with the spirit of compassion, we also address the critical need for safe spaces where young women can express themselves without the burden of shame or guilt. We touch upon the confidence gap and its ramifications on important aspects of a woman's life, such as the gender pay gap and imposter syndrome. As we wrap up, Shahroo and I examine the transformative power of kindness, self-compassion, and positive self-talk in personal growth. Tune in for an enlightening conversation that challenges traditional notions of self-improvement and addiction recovery. If your friend tells you about a new goal they want to achieve, would you tell them that there is no way they can do it, or that it wasn't for people like them? Of course you wouldn't! If you really want to change your habits for good, behaviour change specialist Shahroo Izadi believes that this self-talk is what is holding you back from the real change you want to achieve. Instead, Shahroo believes we have to treat ourselves with kindness to create lasting difference. They say that around 80% of new years resolutions will fail by mid-Feb. That's an awful lot of promises to revise harder for students and “I'll stay stress-free” for parents that will have fallen by the wayside. But these things are important to see through. So just how is it that we gear ourselves up for success and try to make new better habits stick? This week our returning guest is behavioural change expert Shahroo Izadi - author of The Kindness Method. Shahroo explains why resolutions tend to fail and importantly, she explains what we should do about it! So many of us go about life with that critical voice in our heads. A voice that tells us, whether, in our work or personal life, we are the worst person in the world. This inner critic can often lead to anxiety. This week Rebecca gets to the heart of what causes this intrusive worrying with the author of The Kindness Method, Shahroo Izadi. They discuss mindful practices and how kindness and self-compassion can be invaluable when it comes to reducing our anxiety. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A powerful message that keeps being retold on the podcast is how our greatest struggle can often turn out to be our greatest gift. One of my first guests, Shahroo Izadi, the UK's answer to Brene Brown, was addicted to food from the age of 10 and wrestled with this problem for years. Shahroo now finds deep meaning and purpose in helping others to transform their lives by changing their relationship with food through her books such as The Kindness Method and The Last Diet. Another fantastic guest on the show was Drew Schapper, PhD rockstar who fell into drink and drugs. After turning his life around to health, fitness, and family he wrote a brilliant book,“After Party” to inspire others to do the same! Recently I interviewed Matt Pink aka @thebetterlifeguy LIVE and once again he shared a story that's every parent's worst fear, and after almost taking his own life, he is now on a mission to help others make their life BETTER! Equally, I fully acknowledge that when we are going through our hard times they just hurt. However, the message I really want to share through the podcast is that over time, our biggest mess can eventually become our most powerful message. I would love to know which of your biggest struggles has turned into a story that could help others?
What if there were another way, a way that obliterates shame, and leads to lasting change, empowerment and happiness?Let me introduce today's guest who has discovered that kindness is the key that can transform your life.Meet Shahroo Izadi, recently dubbed at the UK's answer to Brene Brown, who is a speaker, coach and author of the brilliant “The Kindness Method” and “The Last Diet”. Shahroo and I first became friends following a meeting at our Pan Macmillan Bluebird launch of our first books, The Kindness Method' and ‘The 28-day Alcohol-free Challenge,” since then we have spent many hours waxing lyrical about all things behavioural change. Shahroo's message is powerful and real. Her own struggles with body image and weight led to what she describes as an addiction to food from a very young age. We discover during our conversation that like so many great thinkers Shahroo's biggest struggle became her greatest gift and she now devotes her life to helping people make empowered changes to their wellbeing and lives using the power of kindness.I really hope you enjoy this conversation with Shahroo who is beautifully articulate, funny, inspirational and drops so much wisdom that you will not only hear the story behind her story, but also leave with a new super-skill that might change your life - kindness. Alright let's do this…
In Episode #17 Basis London founder Tom McAdam speaks with behaviour change specialist and bestselling author of The Kindness Method, Shahroo Izadi.Shahroo began her career in addition treatment in the NHS. Through her experience, she became convinced that the general population could benefit from variations on the same tools and approaches that she was seeing transform people's lives in addiction recovery.Shahroo began to combine and adapt all of the most effective, compassion-based elements into a practical toolkit of written exercises and motivational information; adding her own observations and experience as she went. These lessons are distilled into Shahroo's two bestselling books, The Kindness Method and The Last Diet.We speak about:* A radically different approach to behaviour change* Why "problem habits" are actually solutions and how thinking about this can provide key insights into what you need to do to change* Why kindness is such an effective way to create new habits and practical ways you can go about being kinder to yourself through the process of change* The importance of becoming aware of your internal narrative* Acknowledging ambivalence towards change and preparing for the inevitable moments of low motivation* Why you should leverage your strengths rather than focus on your weaknesses* Creating a positive vision for the future to become excited about the process of change* Positive affirmations* Finding your genuine reasons for change* Why the most important part of your "plan" should be what you will do when you deviate from the planAmong many other things. We hope you enjoy the conversation! You can find Shahroo on instagram @shahroo_izadi and through her website shahrooizadi.co.uk

I often feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I start Googling what qualifications I could get to show I'm capable of doing the job I already have. Does this sound familiar? In this episode, I take a deep dive into how imposter syndrome effects graduates, where I think it stems from and how to work through self-doubt and procrastination in both your personal and professional life. I share strategies to help you stop waiting until you feel ready or educated enough to apply for your dream job or take on a new project, to be able to know you are capable (and get on with doing what it is you're putting off) whilst you learn what you don't know along the way. I mention tips from Shahroo Izadi's book The Kindness Method, Chloe Slade's coaching at Vibe + Flow and Sophie Cliff's joy coaching. Hosted by Jess Bacon Hosted on Acast. Shahroo Izadi is a psychologist, speaker, coach and author of The Kindness Method. Her latest book, The Last Diet, builds on her work specialising in addiction to help people change their habits for good. “What you want is the next choice you make to be a kind one,” she says. In this episode, Shahroo talks about the power of kindness with Club Soda’s Laura and Dru.Is changing your drinking so wildly different from any other type of change?I think one thing which is definitely worth saying is that alcohol does lower your resolve. When I help people to change their habits, invariably you’ll be following some sort of plan. And alcohol, as a drug, is very good at making you not care about plans, compared to helping someone to reduce their sugar intake. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not underestimating the impact that sugar can have on you physiologically. But in terms of the impact it has on how much you care about following through the plan…Even if you don’t find yourself with a problematic relationship with alcohol, now more than ever, people are noticing that it’s on a heavier rotation. If it’s a coping strategy for stress. And if you want to drink for the rest of your life, the likelihood is at some point you’re going to need to think about how you drink, why you drink and under what circumstances you want to be drinking.I do see it as the same as any other habit. That’s where I’ve been able to draw parallels between my relationship with food. I’m not saying by any means that anyone has to drink, of course. And I see people thriving when they don’t. But I don’t want them to think that that’s the only option, and to feel disempowered.People sometimes don’t want to change because they can’t imagine some occasions without alcohol. And alcohol is efficient at doing some things. We do feel less inhibited. So there isn’t any point in demonising it and saying that it doesn’t do those things. What I would say, though, is that it robs us of the opportunity to demonstrate our capacity to have interesting conversations. There may have been a time when alcohol was a solution to something, it was a social lubricant, it gave you confidence. But, it’s most likely that at this stage in adulthood, you know how to have a really nice time and to enjoy company. You just haven’t given yourself a chance to experiment doing it without alcohol.A lot of the time people think change is such a daunting prospect. They think they’ll never socialise with alcohol again. So they might want to regulate booze. It’s about treating a lot of these [underlying] things first and foremost. Say to yourself, “I’m doing this just to show myself that I can, and then I’ll reassess after I’ve done it a few times in a row”. I think that’s a lot less daunting. We give alcohol a bit too much credit. Ask yourself, “Am I giving alcohol this credit? Would my body just self-regulate if I give gave it a chance?Alcohol’s not the problem. It’s a solution. So think about the problem it is solving, or once solved. What else could solve that problem? This podcast is sponsored by our friends at Lucky Saint – the 0.5% Superior Unfiltered Lager. Old habits die hard, and never does the saying seem more apt than at this time of the year, when many of us start thinking about our New Year's resolutions, and try to adopt a “new year, new me” mentality, in order to make positive changes to our health. As GPs, discussions around lowering alcohol consumption, smoking cessation, and becoming more active are commonplace in our consultations. However, how can we have meaningful conversations with our patients around “kicking the habit”, and help them to make lasting changes? Where do we draw the line between self-care and self-harm, and how can we introduce better self-care rituals for our physical & mental health? Our guests: Cindy Gray is an interdisciplinary professor of Health and Behaviour at Glasgow University's Institute of Health and Wellbeing. Shahroo Izadi is a behavioural change specialist, and author of ‘The Kindness Method: Changing Habits for Good'.
Behavioural change specialist and author of The Kindness Method, Shahroo Izadi, joins us to talk about her battle with binge eating, her healing journey, and just how you can stop fighting the kitchen. Her focus is on using kindness to create change -- and the results can be amazing. We know what we need to do to be better at something. Just work a little smarter, procrastinate a little less, start a little earlier, stop checking the phone so much. It's clear. It makes sense. And it's for our own benefit. So why then can it be so difficult to make these seemingly simple changes to the way we approach things- and, of course, how our teens approach their studies? In this episode Nathan McGurl is talking about habits and behaviours with Shahroo Izadi. Shahroo is a Behavioural Change Specialist and bestselling author of The Kindness Method, an internationally published book on habit-change. On this episode of the Quiet Life Michael talks to Shahroo Izadi, Behavioural Change Specialist and author of both The Kindness Method and The Last Diet about motivation, about maintaining good habits and coping strategies during stressful times. A fascinating episode for anyone in search of some inspiration and encouragement. Shahroo's approach to behavioural change was initially inspired by experience she gained working in the substance misuse treatment field and her admiration for those in abstinent recovery from drug and alcohol addictions. It came to her attention there that some of the approaches proving effective in changing habits don't focus on meticulous planning (or indeed drugs), at all. Many of them are more generally concerned with increasing self-esteem, self-awareness and self-belief. Through her books, talk, workshops and sessions, Shahroo supports people to gain more insight into unwanted habits and create personalised plans of change by handing over tools that increase self-awareness, self-compassion and self-belief. Behavioural Change Specialist, and author of The Kindness Method, Shahroo Izadi joins us to talk about the secret behind changing all kinds of habits successfully; and how we can apply that to our phone and tech habits. Shahroo started her career in the NHS before setting up her private practice. Her therapeutic approach is influenced by her frontline addiction treatment work in clinical, community and prison settings. Shahroo Izadi is a behavioural change specialist and the author of the book The Kindness Method in this episode we talk all about changing our habits and behaviour. It's often said in self development our habits underpin our whole lives and if we can change our habits we can change our lives. Shahroo says that the way to change these habits Shahroo is to be kinder to ourselves which for some of us is quite radical. I'm a huge fan of self-compassion and self kindness so I loved this conversation with Shahroo and I hope you will too.
Shahroo Izadi - The Kindness Method: the easier way to change your bad habits & improve your life If you have ever tried to change a habit in order to improve your life and it hasn't worked or it's felt like really hard work, then perhaps understanding Shahroo Izadi's 'The Kindness Method' may well be the approach for you. Shahroo Izadi is a behavioural change specialist, speaker, coach and author of The Kindness Method. The Kindness Method shows how by being kind to yourself you can really make a big difference to addictions and bad habits. So whether it's something around food, exercise, smoking, drinking or something else, if you follow the process of The Kindness Method, you can make a big difference without feeling like you are having to have incredibly strong will power, and without being cruel to yourself. Unsurprisingly it's a very appealing concept and the book has been very successful reaching top spot in a number of categories. What I like specifically about Shahroo is that everything in The Kindness Method is based on real experience. She has made transformational changes in her own life and also helps others too. Shahroo provides relapse prevention coaching and support groups in a recovery house for young women. The work she does has also drawn the attentions of BBC radio, the Telegraph and Red magazine to name a few. At One Year No Beer, we encourage you to build new habits and find substitutes for alcohol during your 28-day, 90-day, or 365-day challenge. But what happens when you’ve finished that challenge? Some people decide to remain alcohol-free going forward. Others would like to reintegrate alcohol into their lives, but in a different and healthier way than they did before their challenge. Both choices are reasonable. The question is, if you decide to bring alcohol back into your life after your challenge, how can you do it in a way that works for you and isn’t problematic? Today’s guest knows a lot about helping people manage this and similar issues. “If someone’s planning to start drinking again, it can be useful to start thinking, ok, what do I want to drink, and under what circumstances?” Shahroo Izadi is an expert in behavioral change. After studying psychology at the undergraduate and graduate level, she began working in addiction treatment. Eventually, she began using the strategies and tools that she learned in the addiction treatment field to help people make other types of changes in their lives and break back habits that were not related to addiction. Shahroo has also worked with people who have eating disorders or other problematic eating behaviors. This presents a challenge because no one can simply give up food for 28 or 90 days while they develop new habits. Shahroo has had to find ways to help people manage their eating habits while continuing to eat every day. The strategies that work in these situations may also be helpful for people who are trying to reintegrate alcohol into their lives without allowing it to become problematic. In our interview, Shahroo talks about the importance of finding the reasons that you want to drink. What is alcohol doing for you? What do you want it to do for you? She also discusses finding the sweet spot when it comes to drinking or eating. Past a certain point, both food and alcohol and drinking can have diminishing returns, so where is the point where you get the most value from it? How can you plan to include alcohol in your life in a positive way? These questions and more can help you reach a point where you can successfully bring alcohol back into your life without it becoming a problem.
