Today we look at what may or may not be affecting the adoption of continuous glucose monitors for the general public. Tune in today on Episode 1672 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. “You’re not moving the earth here, it’s showing you the relative change and that’s valuable information.” – Jimmy Moore Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are increasing in popularity in the keto and carnivore community lately. Even people who don’t have diabetes are using them to do all kinds of experiments to test their carbohydrate tolerance, look at their post workout glucose, And to see in real time what impact stress is having on their blood sugar. I think just about anyone and everyone who cares about their health should be using a CGM as a way to track one of the most relevant markers in the body. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a new study published a couple of weeks ago in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by a calorie hypothesis apologist researcher from the NIH named Kevin Hall who tested simultaneous use of the Dexcom G4 vs. Freestyle Libre CGMs to see if there was any disparity between the readings. Duh! He didn’t even have to do the study for me to tell him that this was true. ⁣ ⁣ Listen in today to get full details about the study designed to discourage people from using a CGM. When you don’t believe in the insulin hypothesis like Kevin Hall, why would you find value in using a continuous glucose device? Nice try Kevin but we’re not buying it. Check it out now! ⁣

Today we tackle the topic of COVID-19 messaging in light of patients being scared to visit their doctor for routine care. Tune in today on Episode 1670 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. Support this show by becoming a Patron at Patreon! “We’re so fearful of a virus with less than 1% death rate that people are willing to let go of common sense. If you need medical attention, don’t stay home and try to ride it out.”  - Jimmy Moore The vaccine for COVID-19 will potentially be here in a matter of months and researchers at Yale University are trying to determine what messaging it will take to convince you to take it. They are currently conducting a study of 4000 American adults both healthy and unhealthy to determine which argument in favor of a vaccination would be the most effective. With all the constant negative media coverage of COVID-19 over the past six months, people have become absolutely scared to death of getting this virus. With the daily running tally of infections and deaths relentlessly blasted at us, people have become so paralyzed by fear that it is affecting the rational sensibility when it comes to getting regular routine medical care. Hospitals have taken notice. ⁣ While the perception is that everyone in hospitals right now has the coronavirus, it’s honestly not true. But because that perception is so deeply ingrained in many right now, people simply aren’t going to the hospital to get checked out when they have symptoms. One survey found that one in 4 Americans with symptoms of a heart attack or stroke would rather take their chances at home than to go to a hospital and risk getting COVID-19. This is atrocious!⁣ ⁣ In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I share about the top 10 causes of death in the United States and how many of the screenings for things like heart disease and cancer are being missed because patients just aren’t getting them done. One breast cancer facility in the news story I read has seen a 90% drop in mammograms since the beginning of March. Listen in today to learn more about the lasting ramifications that will come from this missed preventative care and treatments for chronic disease.⁣

Rebekah Farmer drops by the show today to talk about her journey battling autoimmune disease on Episode 1669 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. “Keto was wonderful and changed so many things, but I still had issues. I was constantly choosing hyper-palatable foods.” – Rebekah Farmer Rebekah Farmer (@tailoredketohealth) was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 6th grade. In seventh grade, she ran into chronic pain. She was rushed to the emergency room with severe chest pains, and left with a diagnosis of costochondritis and degenerative disc. She was then diagnosed with OCD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, Narcolepsy, and a myriad of digestive issues such as gastroparesis, IBS, IBD, slow transit colon, Celiac and diverticulitis. Rebekah started regular Chiropractic treatments to address scoliosis and chronic pain. She went through multiple rounds of physical therapy, but symptoms continued to worsen. Shortly after graduating high school, she ran into chronic adrenal fatigue, crippling anxiety and pain so bad that she was bed bound. She had difficulty breathing, with frequent episodes of near- suffocation. Desperate and afraid, she knew that she needed to dig deeper. She ventured to uncover the root of her issues, working with multiple functional medicine doctors, and embarked on a more strict/ personalized version of the ketogenic diet. She was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, ulcerative colitis, Addisons, Hashimotos hypothyroid, CREST scleroderma, and a central nervous system disorder called Central Sensitization Syndrome (see youtube video by Dr. Sletten of Mayo Clinic). With Keto, various supplements, and support she was able to get off of Adderal, Clonazepam, and Ambien after being dependent on them for 13 years. She gained energy and focus, and reversed Hashimotos! Her cystic acne also cleared completely. She was only just beginning to break free from the cage that she became burrowed into after years of quick “fixes” and excessive rounds of antibiotics ordered by traditional med doctors. Rebekah has continued to strip off the band-aids to uncover the sources and contributors to systemic disease that almost took her life, and more importantly her hope and joy. Listen in today as Jimmy and Rebekah dip deeply into her story and the fascinating truths she learned about the healing power of keto and her faith.

How does a ketogenic diet affect Covid-19? Do T cells have an impact on your immune response? Find out on Episode 1668 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. “What if the hydroxybutyrate in your blood could give you a fighting chance when it comes to Covid-19?”  - Jimmy Moore A lot of people in the keto and carnivore community right now are discussing the importance of eating better as a means of lowering glucose, inflammation, and insulin levels to improve overall metabolic health. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that messaging and I agree with it for the most part. But what about the role of ketone bodies themselves and how they can help fight viral infections like the seasonal flu and even COVID-19? New research reveals some exciting details. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a 2020 study published in the journal Med entitled “Investigating Ketone Bodies as Immunometabolic Countermeasures against Respiratory Viral Infections” by Brianna J. Stubbs, etal. I’m gonna warn you ahead of time that this is a very science jargon-laden paper (NERD ALERT ) looking at very meticulous pathways by which the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) works mechanistically to fight off viral infections. But if you can stick this one out, then it’s pretty fascinating stuff!⁣ We also share about T cells and low-carb diets being the key in your body having a good chance of effectively fighting off COVID-19. The T cells, which are part of your immune system, can actually destroy the virus even without antibody production. How many people have fought off COVID-19 with their T cells and yet have no evidence that they’ve been exposed to the virus? How many more people have been exposed to COVID-19 than are in the statistics? Why aren’t we hearing about this in the national media?⁣ ⁣ As for low-carb diets playing a strong role in this discussion, I share an article from @marikasboros going into detail about statistics of those being ravaged the worst by this virus all being people with the worst metabolic health. And you heal this insulin resistance best with carbohydrate restriction.

Dire family news shook Darren and he started researching nutrition. As a pharmaceutical representative, he knew that drugs were a quick fix, but not always a fix for the long term. It took me years of study before he concluded Hippocrates was right when he said,”Let thy food be the medicine and let thy medicine by thy food.” This statement more than anything he had ever read has had a lasting impression on him, and was the catalyst for him evolving into the Phat-Man. “P-H-A-T” is an acronym for Perfectly Healthy And Toned which materializes naturally when you adopt truth based nutrition, wellness, and heightened levels of consciousness into your your life.

I’m a teenage girl from Richmond, Virginia and my parents started the keto diet in March 2016. I watched both of them lose weight and get healthy. The day before I started keto, I had a sleepover with my best friend where I easily consumed over 300 grams of carbs! WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?! On July 20, 2019, I decided that I had enough of eating carb-filled processed foods and went keto not for weight loss but to improve my health. It wasn’t easy at first but I knew my health was more important than any carby food I thought I wanted. I didn’t want to go down the same path my parents did becoming fat and sick as adults. Since going keto, I have never felt better. I have so much more energy, my sleep has improved, migraine headaches went away, and I just feel so much better. I started my Keto Teen Meghan Instagram page in August 2019 to help encourage and educate others in their keto journey. Diet is important, but I also like talking about self love, body positivity, and confidence.

For twenty plus years, he has fought through the morass of misinformation to recover his health. At first, Paul, was put on the most common thyroid treatment, but over time he became even more ill, with both low cortisol and low thyroid symptoms. Paul saw many endocrinologists and doctors, but eventually, he realised that he had to figure out what was wrong himself and he was able to recover. But the 15-year struggle had cost him his career and damaged his relationships. He had lost all of his thirties and some of his forties. In the process of getting well, he had managed to develop a safe protocol for using the T3 thyroid hormone (Liothyronine) and an innovative approach called the Circadian T3 Method (CT3M) that can correct adrenal function in many cases. At the suggestion of his family doctor, Paul wrote ‘Recovering with T3’ to explain these protocols whilst his second book, ‘The CT3M Handbook’ talks more about CT3M, based on patient experience with it.

Justin asks: My question is about losing body fat. I carry my excess in my thighs and in my low abdomen, I'm about 12% body fat and it's all in those areas. How can I get rid of the last bit? I'm a triathlete who finished my first half ironman this past summer, and now in the off season I'm focusing on weights, would starved cardio work every morning if it was say 30 minutes at moderate intensity? I'm not looking to gain cycling fitness doing this. bigpaully1 asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield how do you feel about hyaluronic acid being injected into a knee to reduce pain in that joint. Jake asks: does it make sense to add clip on aero bars to a standard road bike? It seems to me that the geometry of the road bike does not lend itself well to being in the aero position, and that riding in the regular drop bars is more efficient. Would love to hear your thoughts. Mike asks: In your experience with your athletes, has anyone ever complained of TFL pain/syndrome? I've had a few massages, ice, NSAIDSs, A.R.T., Graston, stretching, strengthening, refrained from all running, dry needling, hydrotherapy jets, and witchcraft. And after 7-8 weeks, the pain is no better, just disappeared a few times only to return the next day. No pattern of when it feels better, but it doesn't hurt during any activity except running or 1-leg squats (2-leg squats are 100% pain-free). I'm not a crazy runner, I'm like one of your athletes, just 10-15 hours/week max, and I rarely run more than 30 miles/week. It only bothers me during running (walking sometimes), though it feels worse the next day, and I've only run 2x in the past 3 weeks. Glutes, hammys, and quads are good to go (strong, flexible, rested). Psoas/obliques are a little tight on the injured side. In my response to Mike, I recommend he try my "Bulletproof Knee" program. Billy asks: I think I recently developed IBS and I was wondering if you can talk about IBS in athletes. My doctor took blood tests and stool samples (all negative) , and a xray of my abdominal area and the results says I have a large amount of stool present at the time of the xray. I like to note that I do go 1-3 times a day, but most times a don't feel fully relieved. I'm currently playing around with my diet and hoping that this will help. The doctor thinks I may eat too well and that its causing me to be constipated. I drink lots of water 3 litres a day. I'm adjusting my serving sizes and time between I eat because I tend to eat too much. From all my training, I tend to feel I need to eat a lot in one sitting ( avoiding this now). Do you have any advice? Here is the link to the parasitic testing from Unikey Health Systems that I recommended for Billy. Blaine asks:I know that you do a ton of research of various journals and publications in putting together your website and podcasts. I would really like to learn more about exercise science and nutrition and I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions of some good journals or websites to follow or ones that you get the most information from. Also sometimes you mention some of the research studies when answering questions on the podcast. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to site those research studies in the show notes. If it is something that is not that easy to do don't worry about it, as I know that you already put a lot of work in. In my response to Billy, I mention Alan Aragon's Research Review, the National Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, PubMed, and the Stone Hearth Newsletters. Patrick has a call-in question about cold weather, dry skin and lotion. Pete asks: I have a question regarding the R isomer of Alpha-Lipoic Acid.  I have heard that R-ALA can be used to improve blood glucose levels and possibly prevent some fat gain by increasing insulin sensitivity.  Also, I have heard that the generic Alpha-Lipoic acid is a 50/50 blend of R & S ALA, where the S isomer has no use and can even be harmful. What is your opinion on supplementing with R-ALA to improve insulin sensitivity? Do you think there is any benefit of taking say 150mg of R-ALA vs. 300mg of a standard ALA supplement? Congratulations to Pete, who wins a free month of Ben's Body Transformation Club for asking the best question! Do you have a question for Ben?
