In s3e63 of Platemark, podcast host Ann Shafer talks with collaborative printer Peter Pettengill. Peter founded Wingate Studio in 1985 on his family's dairy farm in Hinsdale, NH. Originally trained at Crown Point Press, Peter specializes in multi-plate color etchings. Now semi-retired, Peter's son James has taken over the operating of the shop, though Peter lends a hand when requested. They talk about Peter's early experiences at Crown Point Press, his work with celebrated artists such as John Cage, Sol LeWitt, and Walton Ford, and the technical and creative complexities of creating fine art prints. Peter reflects on his transition to semi-retirement, the passing of his studio to his son James, and the historical and artistic significance of their family farm turned artist residency. This episode offers listeners an insightful look into the dedication required in printmaking, the balance between creativity and technical skill, and the supportive community that underpins the art world. On this week's episode of Impact, there were no guests, but still lots of important information to discuss. I wanted to take a different approach on this episode and have a rundown of the key takeaways and ideas from our past episodes.   From talking about menopausal health with Dr. Anna Cabeca, to discussing the importance of believing in our intuition with Reef Karim, to the inspiring and meditative app/community, Othership, with Robbie Bent, we talk about it all. Also dived into the conversation of not needing to fit in with Katie Prince, and understanding the context behind an opinion with Jon Goodman.    There is much more we discuss on this episode so you definitely want to tune it. It's amazing to have had so many wonderful guests on IMPACT. I can't wait to keep on having more conversations with these intellectual and powerful people. It's definitely wonderful to be able to go back to these episodes that contain so much insightful stories and information! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps):  [4:00] Jon Goodman [8:07] Dr. Anna Cabeca [11:52] Katie Prince [14:16] Reef Karim [16:30] Robbie Bent MEMORABLE QUOTES: “Really what I took away from his conversation more than anything else is that you have to contextualize someone's commentary with a lens of nuance.” ~Meghan Walker   “Telling people exactly what they want to hear is  an excellent way of marketing but it's your job as the consumer to have a lens of understanding around the context of experience that that person is bringing to the table.” ~Meghan Walker   “We're looking over this ancient land that has seen many levels of professions.” ~Meghan Walker “I've been asking people lately, what are you willing to give up in order to achieve the results you are looking for.” ~Meghan Walker “That is really a sentiment that I took away from Dr. Anna' interview, is that sometimes for us to move forward, we actually have to hit pause on various areas of our lives.” ~Meghan Walker   “Robbie has built something truly amazing with Othership. Othership is an app and a physical location where you literally gather in community to ice baths, and saunas, and breathing workshops.” ~Meghan Walker   “The key thing that I took away from that conversation with Robbie is that for things to be effective in your life, for you to actually reap the rewards of transformation, you have to commit.” ~Meghan Walker “We are going to make decisions that are not necessarily in alignment with their expectation because ultimately it gets to be our life.” ~Meghan Walker

What does it mean when someone has been in the fitness industry for 17 years, written 11 books on the business of fitness, and published 1,000 articles from 800 different coaches, and insists on hiring a personal trainer to coach him? It means hiring a trainer is a really good idea. There is always something to be learned.  Jon's mission is to bring the fitness world together, so that fitness professionals may serve their clients in the best of ways.  As you embark on your new or continued fitness journey, take a listen to Jon's always helpful and often funny comments on how to manage your time in the gym, and please be careful of social media trainers who are let's say.... going to extremes to get your attention. PS- Confused about midlife health and fitness? That's my niche, and one more thing, I promise I won't make ya do a gazillion burpees or crazy newfangled goofy workouts. contact me at Judy@judyarazoza.com   Check back every Tuesday for a new episode on the Air Hug Community Podcast

Since 2011, he has supported fitness professionals by publishing over a million words, growing some of the largest online communities, publishing several books and establishing the first-ever certification for online trainers, the Online Trainer Academy. He's been featured in most major business and fitness publications including Men's Health, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Muscle & Fitness and Inc. – to name a few. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Jon spends his winters exploring the World with his wife and son. Jon and I dive deep into the foundational principles of what it takes to build a successful business and then pivot to get specifically into building and online coaching brand that is profitable, sustainable and stands the test of time. If you’re a coach looking to build an online business (or ANY type of business in the fitness space) then this is a MUST listen to episode. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN What’s going to happen with most coaches in the industry when it comes to the future of in person and online training. Everything works, from blogs, podcasts, Instagram, YouTube, etc. but here is what you MUST follow to succeed on any platform. Jon breaks down exactly what he would do if he started on a social platform to succeed and also make money. The reason why Jon never did podcasts but is now starting his own – and the most powerful reasons to do one. The process of building a specific skillset that will help you position yourself, generate leads, make sales and build a real business. Lessons about not launching too early with a sub-par product (a big mistake many people make). Why you don’t need to stress about missing out on new platforms that could “blow up.” We discuss what you really need to focus on. The reason you shouldn’t start with paid advertising and how to make your first sales and build “the machine.” The 5/1/60 Principle that will help you create a compelling offer to get your first clients. The exact steps to get your first 5 clients online—even if you don’t have a big social media following—and be able to get you started with online coaching. The truth about building an online coaching businesses fast and keeping it sustainable. Picking lower price point membership sites vs. high end coaching – what works and what you certainly shouldn’t do. Jon and I break it down in detail. The lessons from a friend and mentor who built one of the biggest niche programs and sold it for over a 100+ million to the Golf Channel. Why Jon has written 11 books and where the real value comes in from. What is possible for an online coach when it comes to serving clients and providing a great service (how many clients, price points, automation, hybrid models). Jon is building an online fitness company and breaks down exactly how they will do it step-by-step, from launch, hiring break down, organization, marketing… (steal this!) What Jon recommends to gym owners when it comes to growth and also adding online coaching possibilities. Why do we run away from the things that are different even though they’re better for us, and how to change it (stemming from an example Jon gives on an opportunity missed by a big chain gym in Canada). As a fitness professional you’re going to come out of COVID in one of two ways. Learn them. The power of being great on camera and whether you can be successful without it. And much more.   LINKS AND RESOURCES Jon Goodman Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonathan_goodman101/ The Personal Trainer Development Center: https://www.theptdc.com/ Online Trainer Academy: https://www.theptdc.com/online-trainer-academy-certification-c?utm_expid=.0kYl7KMnRuawga9mWgeQLg.1&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F

On this week’s episode we welcome Alex Cartmill from the Personal Trainer Development Center to the show to talk about how they help trainers transition into building more successful businesses. We talk about imposter syndrome, the importance of providing value, selling and understanding your customer, how to avoid getting lost in the weeds as an online trainer, and why you need to launch before you’re ready. Alex is currently the head coach of the Online Trainer Academy, which is a business development program for personal trainers. He helps coaches, gym owners, and nutrition consultants transition their business online while also overseeing his team of 8 other coaches. Alex developed this program with Jon Goodman, the founder of the PTDC, in 2016. Just two years prior to that, Alex was a personal trainer who was interning under Jon - starting with odd jobs and then getting paid as the company’s social media director before getting the opportunity to develop the Online Trainer Academy.  We first get into talking about the fear of putting your product to market and the importance of getting out of your own way. Alex uses failure as a lesson in finding what didn’t work and as an opportunity for growth as opposed to sitting on the sidelines and speculating if something will resonate. A lot of his job is helping trainers transition from doing nothing to crossing the barrier to doing something. Alex talks to his students about considering the worst case scenario when looking to ship, and most of the time it’s not nearly as bad as people think. Failure, he says, is a necessary part of the process and if you’re in constant fear of it, you’re limiting your upside.  Next we discuss what those first conversations look like when Alex is talking to new students in terms of how they’re going to get started and how he helps them overcome the hurdle of putting themselves out there. The first thing he instills is that you need to understand the real value of what you’re offering and that you’re not just giving away a fitness program. You need to uncover who you are working with, their current situation when they come to you, what version of themselves do they want to become, and how you are going to help them get there.  We then transition into positioning yourself in the market and finding the right audience. Alex talks about how if you get more specific with who you want to work with, you can begin to eliminate having to pitch to people who just aren’t a good fit for your services. This includes being clear on who your service isn’t for and avoiding being in the middle attempting to be everything for everyone. Alex goes on to use testimonials as an example of how you can tell a story about someone who went from point A  to point B while demonstrating that you laid out the steps to help them get there and that you’re capable of helping others do the same. This can be extremely powerful in highlighting exactly what you do, who you help, and what the process looks like for them.  Next we talk about Alex’s experience using John Berardi’s customer research project featured in his book Change Maker. You essentially interview 15 of your customers for an hour and get into their life before working with you, what led them to the point where they bought your service, and what were you competing with. Alex mentions how a lot of times, you might not actually be competing with who you think you are and that why people buy from you might be different than why someone might buy from another business. He illustrates the point with an example of Snickers and Milky Way and how even though they are both candy bars and both have similar ingredients, they are really not competing with each other. People buy Snickers for different reasons than why they buy Milk Way. Understanding your audience takes time, but it is the foundation for which you can market, sell, and build your business. This leads us into Alex’s pillars for new...

Traditionally, personal training has been confined to the gym in face-to-face sessions or in the privacy of a client’s home. More and more personal trainers are turning to online training as a way to build up nationwide and international client bases.  However, many trainers make the transition to conducting online courses without a clear idea of what this involves. What if there was a way to gain the necessary knowledge to become a world-class online trainer? The Online Trainer Academy provides just that. The creator Jon Goodman aims to equip trainers with the tools that they need in order to create a successful online training business, allowing them to avoid common pitfalls. The course is fully certified, which gives online trainers legitimacy in the eyes of potential and existing clients. “I teach people the business aspects of gaining clients online and building up a solid business structure” – Jon Goodman About Jon Goodman Jon Goodman loves to exercise, hates bad socks, and considers himself a key lime pie connoisseur. He is the creator of the Personal Trainer Development Center (the PTDC) and the Online Trainer Academy.  He has sold tens of thousands of copies of his books, training programs, and courses. He has also been featured in Men’s Health, Schwarzenegger.com, Muscle & Fitness, and Forbes amongst others.  He writes about personal training and enjoys philosophizing and experimenting with new media.  Originally from Toronto, Jon spends his winters exploring the world. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS How The Online Trainer Academy helps people to become online trainers The benefits of online training for clients, trainers and gym owners Why face-to-face training and online training is completely different The difference between seeking out a mentor and hiring a coach   “Being able to say to clients that you are a certified online trainer immediately puts you ahead of somebody else who just says that they can train that person online”  The PT COREntreprenur Podcast is a project from Core Collective. At last, Katniss Everdeen has returned! We review The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire and generally make mockery of each other's choices of TV and Film; Mike's silent struggle against mainstream forces us into reviewing Ass Backwards, on the TV we review Generation War, a divisive German export about a group of Germans (not surprisingly). Last on the slate is Jon Goodman's foray into political mid management in Alpha House.

Dickie Goodman is the King of Novelty – he holds the record for most novelty singles to hit the Billboard charts – at 17. Things began In 1956 when Goodman, along with his partner Bill Buchanan produced an odd record called “The Flying Saucer” – which took snippets of popular songs and spliced them into a fictitious news report about aliens landing on Earth. The comedy record was a surprise smash hit, jumping to #3 on the charts and spawning a series of followups. Goodman called them “break in records,” and they were full of controversy. Because he was using pieces of other peoples’ music, was he stealing, or was it a new kind of art? In a sense, Goodman was the first artist to use sampling as a way of creating new music – way before those rap guys. From the late Fifties to the mid Eighties, Goodman’s records were a mainstay on the charts – poking fun at the news of the day – be it political blunders or flavor of the month fads, and each one using the popular music of the time to tell the story. In this sense, Goodman’s records help paint a true picture of the public consciousness at the time – making great time capsules. Now, his son, Jon Goodman has compiled Long Live the King, a collection of 26 of his dad’s greatest hits, plus a newly assembled “Election 2012” which Jon created himself.
