Andrew Maraniss is a great storyteller. He writes sports books but not your stereotypical odes to star athletes. His books, while easy to read, have depth. They educate you and make you think about various socio-cultural issues, from a historical perspective as well as how they continue to impact society today. His first book, "Strong Inside," was a biography of Perry Wallace, the first Black basketball player in the SEC. His second book, "Games of Deception," is the story of the first U.S. men's basketball team at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. His most recent book, "Singled Out," is a biography of Glenn Burke, the first openly gay Major League Baseball player and inventor of the high five. It was recently named one of the 100 Best Baseball Books Ever Written by Esquire Magazine. In this episode, we chat about all three books, including interesting stories he came across in putting each book together, but we focus on "Singled Out" and Glenn Burke's life before, during, and after his MLB career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland A's. I think you'll enjoy listening to Maraniss, a good guy with some important stories to share.

Author Andrew Maraniss joins the show to discuss his book Games of Deception, which focuses on the first Olympics where basketball was included as a sport (for men only). These were the 1936 olympic games played in the heart of Nazi Germany during the regime's ascension. The games were used as a way for the Nazi's to show off and receive some validation from other world powers and individuals. And in the center of all of this, we have the inventor of the modern game of basketball, James Naismith, traveling to Germany to watch the game played as an Olympic sport for the first time. David Maraniss, Ink in Our Blood

In this episode, David turns the tables and interviews his son, Andrew Maraniss, who is also a nonfiction author whose work focuses on the connections between sports and social action. His first book, STRONG INSIDE, was an illuminating biography of Perry Wallace, the trailblazing athlete who became the Jackie Robinson of the Southeast Athletic Conference.  His next book, GAMES OF DECEPTION, recounted the experiences of the U.S. basketball team at the sport's inaugural appearance at the Olympics - in Nazi Berlin in 1936. In this interview, David asks Andrew about his approach to research and writing, his emphasis on reaching young readers, and the messages of empathy and activism in his work. Andrew's books have received critical acclaim beyond the world of sports and many awards - including the Lillian Smith Award for civil rights, the RFK Book Awards Special Recognition Prize, and the Sydney Taylor Book Honor for depicting the Jewish experience.

Andrew Maraniss discusses his new book Games of Deception: The True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team at the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany. This is the true story of the invention of a game, created by a thoughtful man named James Naismith. He wanted people to be the best they could be, and he believed exercise and healthy competition brought people together. And, it's the story of evil men who used the Olympic Games, basketball, and propaganda to distract the world from the horrible things they were doing. In this interview, Andrew and I talk about the prominent role that competitive sports, and sports writers played in his own life. We discuss how he overcame the challenges of moving to the South as a teenager, in part by meeting and writing about Perry Wallace, the first African-American to play basketball in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and who would later be the subject of Andrew's first book, Strong Inside. We focus on James Naismith's invention of basketball, and the growth of the game. That leads us into the dark, real life characters on both sides of the ocean that were behind the lies of the Nazi propaganda effort to host those Olympics. Fortunately, there are great heroes and powerful lessons that we also cover throughout of the conversation. His books are available in print and eBook. His web site is andrewmaraniss.com. Amy Clover has a powerful story to share about pivoting her mindset from one of self-flagellation and control toward acceptance and flexibility in body, mind and spirit. After battling for years with eating disorders, depression and a failed suicide attempt in a fitness industry that grew increasingly oppressive, she now teaches people how to build strength from the inside out. In her own words: I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and hate who’s looking back, to feel like you have no control whatsoever over your mind or your life, to feel like you’re so broken that you’re beyond healing. I’ve struggled with clinical depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and eating disorders throughout my entire life. In fact, they almost killed me. I hit rock bottom in 2005 when I was hospitalized on suicide watch.  Having my freedom stripped from me in that hospital shocked me back to life: it hit me that I’d given up. I’d never even tried to take action to feel better because I just assumed that nothing would ever work for me. With this realization fresh in my mind, I committed to working on myself from the inside out as soon as I was released. After all, the worst had already happened. I figured I had nothing else to lose. Amy's recovery, and the mindset and methods she developed that created a true sense of freedom, are what we'll cover in this week's show, along with some of her recent business pivots.

She suffered from clinical depression. On the show, fitness trainer, Amy Clover shares her amazing come-from-behind ReLaunch! story and her rallying message - Your struggle is valid. You owe it to yourself to find a solution. Amy's backstory >> She was a phone call away from becoming a statistic. She had given up on people, herself, and the possibility of a better tomorrow. The note was written. The details taken care of. And the last phone call made. It was the suggestion made by her ex-boyfriend that put things in motion. As they were wrapping up the conversation, he begged her to get help, to talk to someone, to make another call. She called Suicide Hotline. Thankfully, for all of us, there was a kind, understanding, non-judgemental soul on the other end.  That late-night fateful call and the emergency room visit that happened the following day, triggered her to begin an amazing journey of self-discovery and exploration. And, while she was labeled with "clinical depression" from her high school days, and had given in to drugs & alcohol, and other risky behaviors more than once, she learned that she is worthy of a change for the better. While it didn't happen overnight (it doesn't for any one), through her own determination and willingness to grow, she was able to combat depression and she discovered how to be strong from the inside out.  She not only lost the 30-lbs she had been fighting with, she also developed the confidence she needed, to make the difference she wanted. Resource she mentioned: 7 Cups of Tea - where people can connect with others who would listen. Follow Amy on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, and visit her site.
