Starting the year with a focus on mental health and wellness can set the tone for the months ahead. The holiday season often brings its own set of challenges—stress, travel, and the pressure to be everything to everyone. By the time the new year rolls around, many of us are in need of a reset. But instead of rushing into resolutions, which are often abandoned by the end of January, it's better to approach change with intention and mindfulness. Real wellness doesn't come from external pressures or empty promises. It starts within, with self-awareness and a willingness to give ourselves grace. Mental health is about recognizing where we are, being kind to ourselves, and taking manageable steps toward progress. It's okay to not have everything figured out at once. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to your well-being. You deserve to show up for yourself in a way that nurtures your mind and spirit. In this episode, we explore mental health and wellness as we kick off the year with intention. You'll hear practical advice on setting meaningful goals, managing stress, and staying grounded through challenges. With insights from past guests, you'll learn practical tips for embracing authenticity, giving yourself grace, and staying on track—no matter where you are in your journey.   "Trust your gut, if you know that you're not feeling your best. "Everyone is on the other side of fear because fear stops us from doing so many things. So if you can get past or on the other side of that fear, you can achieve absolutely anything." "Evaluate what's important to you and then make small steps to work towards that." "Everybody needs somebody to hold them accountable no matter what it is in your life, or your job, in your relationship." "Seek help when you need it, because there are a lot of mental health issues and addictions that get dismissed or pushed away because people don't want to deal with needing therapy." "If you are not mentally healthy, you're not going to perform at your best." The conversation journeys through the mind-body connection, with personal anecdotes illuminating how stress and emotion can manifest physically, leading to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Asekho and the guest discuss crucial elements of functional medicine, gut health, and the scientifically supported links between the gut-brain connection and mental health. Faysal Abi is back for Round 2 on the "The Joel Evan Show" podcast. If you don't know Faysal, he's one of the best bodyworkers I've ever met. After suffering a debilitating back injury from a car accident, Faysal became intimately familiar with the traditional or, “expert” approach to chronic pain and injury: pharmaceutical drugs, physical therapy, and finally surgery. When that formula failed to provide any relief, Faysal began to study the human body's design, function, pain, and the mind-body connection. After several certifications including yoga, Massage Therapy, and Posture Alignment, Faysal pieced together a powerful approach to helping people with chronic pain or those simply looking to optimize their body by increasing their strength and flexibility. With his roots in martial arts, yoga, extreme fitness and sports, Faysal is well-versed in the demands of an active body. He specializes in correcting people's posture, lessening chronic pain, and improving flexibility and strength through training. Faysal is a full-time Body Worker, Posture Alignment Specialist, Yoga teacher & Yoga Teacher Trainer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Faysal is also a student of the Damanhur School of Meditation, a hypnotherapist and a believer in the mind-body connection.   Errin Andrus is a Body Alignment & Breath Work coach. Her main goal is to help others connect to the consciousness inside of their cells. She helps to create the bridge between the emotions and the physical parts of the body through breath work to aide in physical healing. She believes breath work is the key to achieving cellular regeneration and transcendence. In her one on one sessions, Errin teaches her clients to pump their body full of oxygen to be able to raise their consciousness, while also using mantras, illuminations, zodiac signs, and pressure release techniques to achieve other emotional releases. Not only does her passion lie in regenerating and healing the body, it is also in clean eating and deep cleansing of the body. She will soon be assisting others in parasite cleansing, biome resetting and detoxification practices.  In this episode Errin shares her story where her physical health declined while also experiencing so much sadness and depression. After seeing many doctors that gave her different diagnosis she decided to find her own way to healing. During an intense Rolfing massage session, she recognized that her pain was so deeply rooted in the conditioning of her cells through her belief systems which created her emotions which then in turn, created her physical distress. Errin quickly realized that she had a choice, through the power of our mind she could create the emotion and energy she chose to send and receive. She teaches us how to bring awareness to the emotions that we are feeling, asking the body it it is ok to feel them, to then be able to process through them for emotional healing. Jess and Jess are both very familiar with anxiety. But is it true anxiety or false anxiety? Or is it both, at the same time? Dr. Ellen Vora, holistic psychiatrist and acupuncturist, takes a functional medicine approach to her patients when they come to her with anxiety symptoms. Dr. Vora maintains that oftentimes we feel anxiety symptoms because there is something out of alignment within our bodies. She starts with asking questions about food, sleep, hormone balancing, and the like- and more often than not, anxious states of being can be leveled out by practicing good sleep hygiene, taking gluten out of the diet, getting off birth control or leveling out blood sugar.A thoughtful conversation about anxiety as a cue to the deeper parts of our body, mind and spirit that need us to prioritize our attention on what matters most. Meet Dr. Ellen!ELLEN VORA, MD, is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. In this episode, I am talking to the very knowledgeable midwife Molly O'Brien about imbalances in the body that can affect the labour and birth process. It is important to remember that most women and birthing people will not have an issue giving birth to their babies.  In modern times, however, we sit a lot, we drive everywhere, and sometimes we have accidents or falls that can affect the fascia in our bodies, resulting in tight areas that may stop the baby from moving through easily.  Body alignment and a good understanding of the body, especially the pelvis, can help all birth partners - including doulas and midwives to recognise that if they notice the baby is not coming easily, then there are some simple solutions to create more space for the baby to pass through. Molly outlines what you can do as a birth partner to help during labour if you find yourself supporting a woman who is experiencing pain during labour that is outside of the uterus.   Molly's course is available online for all -  www.optimalbirth.co.ukIf you would like to buy a copy of the book that accompanies this podcast - click here:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner — https://bit.ly/LabourofloveOr purchase a copy via my website - www.birthability.co.ukFollow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner @birthabilityBook a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann  -  https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresfordPlease remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guest, based on her own experiences as a midwife.  Any recommendations made may not be suitable for all women so listeners must do their own research before making decisions.

'Just say yes to never giving up your passion and you will retain your health, both mentally and physically.'  (Steven Radiloff ) We discuss how body alignment through fascial release counters muscle tension and helps you retain a healthy range of motion after active exercise. Steven Radiloff, Certified Advanced Rolfer, trained at the Rocky Mountain Healing Arts Institute and the Rolf Institute, where he obtained his advanced rolfing certification. For over 40 years, Steven has integrated modalities of energy healing, and craniosacral therapy into his rolfing practice, to create a total approach to health and wellbeing through the mind-body connection. Steven was one of the key  people who helped me recover from spinal surgery so that I could once again become the dancing doc and active, optimistic, entrepreneurial person that I am today.   Steven suggests that Rolfing aligns your body by freeing fascial tissues from surrounding muscle and enhances freedom and range of movement. They already have a voice in your head. Understand the narrative you keep telling yourself to “justify” why what you want is inaccessible. “I'm not blank enough so I can't have blank” I'm not good enough so I can't have that promotion/relationship/physique. FILL IN YOUR OWN BLANKS.Find the root of the problem. This part takes a bit more digging. But think about your past, the pain you've dealt with and think about the thought patterns those experiences have conditioned you into believing. Insert the classic “WHO HURT YOU” line. Think about how that shaped you. Write about it, talk about it, RELEASE the emotion. The only reason you're holding onto that pattern is because it hasn't been completely dealt with yet.Create a new dialogue. For every limiting belief you can pinpoint—look in the mirror and tell yourself the OPPOSITE of this. Tell yourself over and over again that you are enough. That you are deserving of everything you want.Envision yourself accomplishing one of your big goals; and take a moment to analyze the better version of yourself that has already accomplished it. What characteristics does he/she have that you currently do not have? List them. There lies your foundation of what traits, skills, and habits you need to master before you can step into your highest self. These are the steps that will fill the gaps in between you and your goals.

She has broken away from traditional Western medicine where many therapists are having to treat patients’ symptoms after an injury or surgery has occurred and instead trying to stay on the forefront to prevent the problem from ever occurring. She realizes the human body is so inter-connected and that it’s not all about muscles, tendons, and bones that cause orthopedic injuries, pain, and even neurological disease, but rather there is connection to one’s mental state and total well-being. Ashley uses Kinesio Tape and the Graston technique based on individual needs. She has special training to work with Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and other neurological diseases, as well as cancer survivors through the STAR program.  Her focus starts by working on the alignment of the spine to enter into one’s total well-being. Then she teaches her clients how to move and BREATH correctly with optimal alignment through various neuromuscular re-education methods. She then branches out from there depending on each patient’s needs. Her main objective is to get her patients moving pain-free whether that be finding a healthy workout program or being able to pick up grandkids.

As a former Mixed Martial Arts pro-athlete, he sought ways to reach and maintain peak performance which led him into Sports Rehab and Physical Therapy. His desire to better understand the body deepened, and opened doors to physical and spiritual awakening. Inspired by dreams and visions, he took on bodywork full-time, which led to the creation of the Body Alignment Method. A chronic lack of sleep leads to many biological system breakdowns and difficulties, but so few people prioritize getting a good night’s sleep. What role does our mattress play in the quality of sleep we get? What other factors affect our sleep? How can we avoid shortening the life span of our mattresses? On this episode, mattress and sleep expert Samuel Smith joins me to talk about the importance of paying attention to sleep, and why we need to be mindful of the quality of bed we sleep in. When your body isn’t getting enough sleep, it’s going to make up for the lack of sleep in other ways. The simplest way to do it is to store calories. -Samuel Smith   Three Takeaways Our quality of sleep is affected by several factors including heat, pressure, movement, and pinch points. Light and sound are the two biggest ones.   The light from your electronic device tells your brain the sun’s up, but we’re not designed to be nocturnal.   When we’re sleeping, we want to be in a straight line. Over time, beds start to dip in the center which puts pressure on our spines.   The world is starting to wake up to the importance of sleep and how much it impacts the functionality of so many of our biological processes. Sleep affects our moods, the work we do, and even our body’s ability to lose weight. We spend 1/3 of our lives on our mattresses, so it’s insanely important to find one that gives us quality sleep. When we prioritize getting 8 hours of quality sleep everyday, we’ll see benefits in every area of our lives.

Amy Clover has a powerful story to share about pivoting her mindset from one of self-flagellation and control toward acceptance and flexibility in body, mind and spirit. After battling for years with eating disorders, depression and a failed suicide attempt in a fitness industry that grew increasingly oppressive, she now teaches people how to build strength from the inside out. In her own words: I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and hate who’s looking back, to feel like you have no control whatsoever over your mind or your life, to feel like you’re so broken that you’re beyond healing. I’ve struggled with clinical depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and eating disorders throughout my entire life. In fact, they almost killed me. I hit rock bottom in 2005 when I was hospitalized on suicide watch.  Having my freedom stripped from me in that hospital shocked me back to life: it hit me that I’d given up. I’d never even tried to take action to feel better because I just assumed that nothing would ever work for me. With this realization fresh in my mind, I committed to working on myself from the inside out as soon as I was released. After all, the worst had already happened. I figured I had nothing else to lose. Amy's recovery, and the mindset and methods she developed that created a true sense of freedom, are what we'll cover in this week's show, along with some of her recent business pivots.
