Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share a jam-packed episode of shocking revelations in several ongoing cases.  We'll start with developments in the Houston, TX prosecution of (2:47) Lee Gilley from his  "Closed-Door" hearing on Tuesday and then move to (11:41) Angie Solomon's simultaneous 'Live-Broadcast-Against-Judge's-Orders' Probable Cause / Preliminary hearing in Franklin, Tennessee.  Before Angie's arrest earlier this month, she had vocally accused her ex-husband, former TV news anchor Aaron Solomon, of killing their 18-year-old son, Grant, in 2020, and sexually abusing their daughter, Gracie, who is now 18. On Tuesday, the undercover officer who posed as a hitman for hire played a recording for the court in which Angie — the mother of Grant and Gracie Solomon — can be heard trying to negotiate for her Aaron's killing … on a credit plan. ..? Also on today's episode, (28:00) Part Two of the Weldon Boyd Calls and what former Horry County Police Deputy Chief Brandon Strickland AND recently-fired HCPD Officer Damon Vescovi did in the aftermath of Scott Spivey's killing.  Let's dive in...

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have great news to share … (00:52) Lee Gilley — the Houston man accused of strangling his wife, killing her and their unborn baby — has been officially indicted by the Grand Jury. This is a big deal — especially considering he's yet another man with resources who seems to think he can buy his way out of consequence with a pricey defense team that includes the likes of Robert Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, and maybe even an image consultant, based on his public behavior as of late.  Also on the show, Mandy and Liz take listeners on their first deep dive into the killing of (11:15) Scott Spivey of Tabor City, North Carolina. Thirty-three-year-old Scott was shot to death in a hail of bullets in September 2023 on a rural highway in Horry County, South Carolina. His shooters were never charged in his death and the case was closed in April 2024. But now the FBI has been asked to take a look at the evidence and the No. 2 officer at Horry County Police Department — a good friend of one of the shooters — is under criminal investigation.  And yes, that's the same police department that let Mica Francis down time and again in the lead-up to her death … when she reported multiple times that she was being stalked by her estranged husband, “Pastor” John-Paul Miller in Myrtle Beach. And no one would listen... maybe now their ears will perk up.  Let's dive in...

Send us a textThis might be the most fun episode we ever produced. As we look back at George H. W. Bush , Pro wrestling fan. With the help of Charleston Post and Courier articles written by their star reporter Mike Mooneyham, we will examine the Bush connection to the world of Professional wrestling and especially his fondness for wrestling's greatest athlete, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. We will hear about Bush's friendship with promoter Paul Boesch, his lifelong connection to "Chief" Ed "Wahoo" McDaniel, and his later friendship with "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd. We will also hit the trail , in 1992, on the whistlestop tour that took George Bush through the Carolinas, with the biggest sports star of them all, Ric Flair. It was at a rally in Spartanburg S.C. where our Host, Randal Wallace, was able to maneuver himself up near the front with a little help from Martha Bishop, the sister of our Senator Strom Thurmond, so he would be nearly front row for the rally at the Train Depot, that would feature not only the President, but Governor Carrol Campbell, Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressional Candidate Bob Inglis, and our host's childhood sports hero, Ric Flair. To this day, as you will hear, it remains Wallace's favorite memory of any in his over 45 years in politics. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any footage from the Spartanburg rally, but we do have some examples of George Bush out on his 1992 whistle-stop tour, and we do have some later moments from the 2008 Presidential campaign where Ric Flair would return to the trail to campaign for Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. It was at the event for Huckabee in Myrtle Beach that our host again became the focus of attention as he stood with a folder full of wrestling magazines hoping to get them autographed by Ric Flair, at the Huckabee rally, while serving as the Rudy Giuliani Horry County Chairman. It made the news, in two articles in the Sun News political blog Poli-tick-Tock. We will look back at that blog too, and feature the Columbia Mike Huckabee Rally with Chuck Norris and Ric Flair. As you will hear, Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump were actually not the first Pro wrestler and President to headline a Presidential campaign event!!  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

This week, investigative journalists — Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — broke news that a second Jane Doe case had been filed against Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, accusing him of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student at Cathedral Hall Academy (formerly known as Grand Strand Academy), a school owned JP's father Wayne Miller, who is named as a co-defendant in the case.  In 1999, when JP Miller was 20 years old he allegedly molested the child after inviting her to play piano with him alone in the church sanctuary. The girl told a teacher about what JP allegedly did and instead of the school offering the child help, she was forced to write “I will not lie about JP Miller” 5,000 times.  Mandy and Liz break down the latest allegations against the Millers and share text messages between JP, his ex-wife and Mica from 2022 or before that addresses the child sexual abuse allegations against JP.  Also on the show, part one of the history of the Millers' alleged scheme to use their school as a staging ground for abuse. Plus an update on the Justice for Mica protesters and JP's frivolous lawsuits against them. Let's dive in...

There was a LOT of "quiet part out loud" fodder served up at Donald Trump's Madison Square Garden rally yesterday - a not-so-subtle homage to the 1939 Nazi rally at the venue's predecessor in New York City. Many are honing in on the racist swipes made by a previously little-known comedian - so awful even the Trump campaign seeks to distance itself from them (did they review when loading his notes on the teleprompter?). I began with Tucker Carlson, though, what with his mocking Kamala Harris' being multi-ethnic and his gratitude for Trump sparking a MAGA movement that gives him the freedom to SAY "the quiet part out loud" now - making him feel like s a freed slave. I'm not making that part up. Hear it for yourself. Reminded me a lot of Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder getting fired in 1988 for racist statements made in a TV interview ... or Rush Limbaugh losing his ESPN gig in 2003. They've come a long way, baby. Also, much has been made of the Washington Post and L.A. Times declining to endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump - and they do deserve all the smoke. Incidentally, cancelling your WaPo subscription isn't what'll hurt Jeff Bezos. What about your Amazon shopping habit? Your Prime subscription? Follow through if you truly intend to, people. That said, what about at the state and local level? What are editorial boards doing there? In South Carolina, The State (Columbia, SC) chose to reward a Congressional candidate with their endorsement despite his failing to respond to their questionnaire in the 7th district race vs. the Democratic opponent - who did fill out the questionnaire - mostly (it seems) based on how they believe the race will play out on Election Day. Here's what they wrote: "In northeastern District 7, The State Editorial Board endorses incumbent Republican Rep. Russell Fry over Democrat Mal Hyman. This was the endorsement we spent the most time discussing. Fry, elected in 2022 after easily defeating five-term incumbent Rep. Tom Rice in the GOP primary, was one of only two congressional candidates to not reply to our questionnaire. Hyman seemed thoughtful, but he didn't offer much in the way of specific solutions in his Q&A, and he also was hard to reach for what should have been an easy follow-up question seeking to fact-check a couple of his figures. Given that Hyman has already fallen well short in two other races for this seat since 2018, a third time does not feel like a charm. We reluctantly endorse Fry, and hope that he doesn't show such disinterest in the press or the public in a second term." That's prognosticating; not endorsing. It's weak and their quibbling over a follow-up (given prior to publication, no less) doesn't hold up. HERE are the submitted answers to the questionnaire given by the Mal Hyman for Congress campaign. Bear in mind, at the bottom of The State's endorsements, behind a paywall but you can read HERE, they wrote: "How we do our endorsements Members of McClatchy's South Carolina Editorial Board conducted interviews and research of candidates and made endorsements in many local, county, state and federal elections on the Nov. 5, 2024 ballot. We based our endorsements on this reporting and fact-checking — and on each candidate's achievements, background, character, demeanor and experience. The state and federal endorsements were made by South Carolina Opinion Editor Matthew T. Hall, letters editor Allison Askins and regular columnist Matt Wylie, a Republican strategist and analyst, in consultation with Brian Tolley, president and editor of The State, The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette, and The Sun News. Hall and Askins made the local and county endorsements in consultation with Tolley. If you have questions or comments about our endorsements, please email Hall at mhall@thestate.com." I do, and I will. Do you? Will you?

The family of Mica Miller has reached a settlement with her estranged husband, South Carolina pastor John-Paul “J.P.” Miller, three months after her death. This resolution has been confirmed by multiple sources, including PEOPLE magazine. “Today John Paul Miller, Solid Rock Church, Inc. and The Estate of Mica Francis Miller, along with the individual members of the Francis family, have reached a full and final Settlement Agreement,” stated Russell B. Long, attorney for Pastor Miller. The terms of the settlement remain sealed under a confidentiality agreement, ensuring that all related matters are considered settled, waived, or released. “Mica's family, Pastor Miller, and the Church have set their differences aside to allow Mica's memory to live on,” Long explained. “All parties now consider this matter ‘closed.'” Reflecting on the tragic circumstances, Long added, “Unfortunately, we do not know every piece of information leading up to the death of Mica. We do know that her life served a purpose. Those that have spent every Sunday morning protesting outside of Solid Rock Church, chanting ‘justice for Mica,' should recognize this time of healing and move on with their lives. We only ask that you remember Mica as the wonderful, beautiful soul that she was.” Regina Ward, the attorney representing Mica's family, expressed similar sentiments in statements to local media outlets The Post and Courier, The Sun News, and CBS affiliate WBTW-TV. “We do not want the Francis family or anyone to be dragged through litigation for years,” Ward said. “We want to put this behind us and move on to the next chapter that matters. When we say that we've gotten justice for Mica as a result of this settlement, it is true.” Mica Miller's body was found at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27. Her death, ruled a suicide by the medical examiner, sparked widespread debate and online conspiracy theories. The Robeson County Sheriff's Department had to address these theories, reaffirming the cause of death as suicide. In a recent interview on Banfield Tonight on NewsNation, John-Paul Miller addressed the speculation surrounding his relationship with Mica. “It feels like people don't care to hear the truth,” he said. He also denied allegations of tracking his late wife, slashing her tires, and posting a topless photo of her, despite a previous letter in which he appeared to apologize for such actions. At the time of her death, Mica and John-Paul were in the process of divorcing, as reported by ABC 30. The Robeson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the couple was separated and estranged. In the weeks leading up to her death, Mica had posted a video on Facebook discussing abuse and offering advice to those in abusive relationships. This video added another layer to the public's interest in her case and the subsequent settlement. With this settlement, both families hope to move forward and remember Mica for the positive impact she had during her life. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? This week, we're talking to Las Cruces Sun-News Lead Sports Reporter Jason Groves. We'll talk about everything that has happened in recent weeks surrounding the New Mexico State University's men's basketball team — and it's been a lot. Jason took over coverage of the team just days after the deadly Nov. 19 shooting on the campus of the University of New Mexico, following the departure of former Sun-News reporter Stephen Wagner. Since then, he has covered the team as they struggled to win games. Then, on Feb. 10, things got even less predictable. The Aggies were pulled off a road trip and Head Coach Greg Heiar and his coaching staff were placed on paid administrative leave following allegations of hazing among Aggies players. According to police documents, at least three players assaulted a teammate. The incident was reported to New Mexico State University Police Department on Feb. 10; the incident report was made public on Sunday, Feb. 12. Minutes after the hazing details were made public, NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu announced that the remainder of the team's season was “suspended indefinitely.” Later, it was made clear that the season was canceled entirely. On Tuesday, Feb. 14, Arvizu announced Heiar was fired as the men's basketball coach after less than one season. While both situations are still under investigation, some strong language has been thrown around by university officials since details started coming to light. This week, I'm excited to have Jason joining us.

Earlier this month, Algernon returned to the Headlight as the newspaper's editor-in-chief. First, a little history. Eight years after the shaky case against Adnan Syed became the center of the hit podcast "Serial," prosecutors said Tuesday that DNA evidence suggests Syed is innocent and murder charges against him have been dropped. Syed was previously convicted in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee and served about two decades in jail before the state's attorney's office in Baltimore asked a judge to vacate the conviction in September. At the time, the office said Syed could still be retried for Lee's death. But the state has now dropped its case against Syed entirely. "Today, justice is done," Marilyn Mosby, the state's attorney for the city of Baltimore, said at a Tuesday news conference. This week, we're honored to be joined by Bethany, who will talk about her reporting, why this case matters to her personally, and how she has covered it as a reporter.

As is often the case in situations like this, official information trickled out at a relatively slow pace. Meanwhile, in the newsroom, we were beginning to put the pieces together much more quickly. Apart from the tragedy itself, the situation raised a number of ethical questions and prompted many conversations in our newsroom. It was important that our reporting be thoughtful, and that decisions be deliberate. Romero sustained a hit in the second quarter that appeared minor; he got up and played a couple more downs before collapsing on the field. He was immediately taken by ambulance to Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming, where a medevac helicopter transferred him to a trauma center in El Paso. The entire team took a knee on the field as the helicopter passed over the field. Since then, it's been touch-and-go for Romero. On June 2, the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, the Las Cruces Association of Realtors and the Las Cruces Home Builders Association hosted a forum for business owners to discuss concerns about theft, vandalism, substance abuse and homelessness in Las Cruces. The forum was held at the Home Builders Association event hall. On Monday, June 6th, many showed up to speak during the public comment portion of the Las Cruces City Council meeting to address the same issues. In this week's episode, we're talking about the shooting of 75-year-old Amelia Baca by an officer from the Las Cruces Police Department. Family members say she suffered from signs of dementia — which was undiagnosed.  When police arrived, they say they found the elderly woman holding a large kitchen knife in each hand. Videos obtained by the Sun-News show that Baca was shot as she took a step toward the responding officer. Our efforts in reporting this story have been rife with transparency issues, stemming from the City of Las Cruces and the Las Cruces Police Department. Days passed before the department acknowledged the fatal shooting. Eventually, they named the victim. And our subsequent records requests shined a little more light on what happened that Saturday before Easter. There are a lot of issues to dissect in this — both in our reporting and in the facts of the case. Why did Amelia Baca have to die? Why weren't less-lethal measures used? Unfortunately, we don't have the answers to THOSE questions. Someday, we might. The incident is still under investigation by the Doña Ana County Officer-Involved Task Force. We'll talk to Justin Garcia, who covers public safety for the Sun-News, about this story — and the challenges of covering it.

On one hand, the nation's economy is shrinking as inflation and other factors drive up gas prices — creating a pinch at the pump and at the supermarket. Las Cruces certainly isn't immune to these large-scale factors — but, according to one economist we spoke to, we may be a little better insulated. We'll talk to Sun-News reporter Algernon D'Ammassa, who has followed several facets of this story quite closely. We'll talk about the state's recent legalization of the sale of recreational cannabis, the nationwide nursing shortage and other factors. And, finally, we'll talk to Meg Potter — the newest addition to our newsroom. Meg is a photojournalist — or, a visual journalist — who just started last week.
