In a commencement speech in 2016, Atul Gawande told the crowd that science is a, "commitment to a systematic way of thinking, an allegiance to a way of building knowledge and explaining the universe through testing and factual observation." In the last ten years that understanding of science has become muddied for the public. Social media has helped fuel the rise of conspiracy theories built upon so-called alternative facts as people claiming to be experts spout anti-science ideas. Communicating scientific ideas was already difficult, but it's become even more difficult in this environment. Science communication is the focus of this episode of Stats and Stories, with guest Ionica Smeets. Ionica Smeets is, chair of the science communication and society research group at Leiden University. She's also chair of the board of The National Centre of Expertise on Science and Society of The Netherlands. Her research lies in the gap between experts and the public when it comes to science communication, with special interest in the problems that occur when those groups communicate and what scientists can do about those problems. Smeets is the author of a number of journal articles on this topic and engaged in science communication for the public when she worked on a Dutch TV show about math. She's also the co-creator of a children's book called Maths and Life.

About Tony's Chocolonely Tony's Chocolonely is an impact company that makes chocolate, not the other way around. Tony's Chocolonely's vision is to end exploitation in cocoa. Not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide. The company was founded in 2005 by 3 journalists from the Dutch TV show ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde' after they discovered that the world's largest chocolate manufacturers were buying cocoa from plantations that used illegal child labor and forced labor. Since then, Tony's Chocolonely has dedicated its efforts to raising awareness of and eliminating inequality in the chocolate industry. Tony's Chocolonely leads by example, building direct, long-term relationships with cocoa farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast, paying them a higher price and working together to solve the underlying causes of exploitation. Tony's Chocolonely wants to inspire the industry as a whole to make exploitation free the norm in chocolate. They believe that being a better business should be the norm, not the exception. The brand has grown to become the market leader in the Netherlands and its bars are now available almost worldwide, with offices in the Netherlands, USA, UK and Germany. Discussed in this episode:Thanks to @Ben-Schulman on YouTube for the information!BETH'S BACK STORY: All of Beth's songs are personal and delve deeply into themes of addiction; drugs & alcohol; abusive relationships; death & suicide; love; Scott (her husband of 23 years); her siblings & parents; living with mental illness; survival; playing music; and striving for happiness… She is a humble but wickedly talented artist who is raw, transparent, and completely honest with her audience. Some of the many personal and professional challenges she has endured and overcome:• Parents divorce when Beth is about 5 years old.• In psychological therapy starting at age 7.• Experiences a violent home invasion and robbery.• Father gambles the house away; abandons family; imprisoned for tax evasion. (The song “Try a Little Hard” off her latest album is about her dad and gambling).• Beth is an alcoholic by age 11.• At 12 years old, she's in a “relationship” with a 40 year-old man (The song “Woman Down,” off her latest album, is about this).• At 15 she takes off for Brooklyn, NY to live with a violent 25 year-old man.• Arrested & briefly jailed for DUI.• At 16, back in LA, she's asked to leave a prestigious music school because of poor attendance (caused by her staying out all night long to sing in South LA clubs).• In a string of abusive personal relationships. (She's written many songs about this theme, but “Caught Out in the Rain” and “Fire on the Floor” are two superb examples). • When Beth is 22, an older sister Sharon dies of AIDS at age 32. (The songs “Skin” and “Sister Heroine” are about her sister Sharon).• Officially diagnosed with Bi-polar I mental disorder around age 27.• As musical career begins to explode in 1999 with the hit single “LA Song,” Beth weighs just 92 lbs. and nearly dies due to drugs, alcohol, and anorexia.• Atlantic Records drops her from the label by 2000.• Long-term drug & alcohol addiction and series of stays in rehab and psyche wards. (Her song “Isolation” is about being in a psyche ward; “Spiders in My Bed” is about living with bipolar mania). By late 2000/early 2001, Beth is completely out of the music business.(1) 2023: The most recent documentary is “Bad Woman Blues” (60 min; a German production) from fall 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Fjr2HTGdY(2) 2005: “Beth Hart Documentary” (from the 2005 ‘Live at Paradiso' DVD; 32 min. plus 8 min. song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFHisbCrqdg. The pod's sidebar series on NBC's revolutionary TV crime drama Miami Vice (1984-1989) begins with returning guest and friend of the show James Majure joining us from Athens, GA. There is so much to discuss in terms of the influence of Vice on contemporary culture but we're starting at the beginning, with the origins of the idea of Miami Vice, a glimpse into the real world conditions in the city of Miami in the early 80s that led to the concept, how the show refined its style and formula over a long storyline arc about the war between Crockett and Tubbs and the ruthless Calderone Cartel, and how Vice reflects the vision of its two primary architects: creator Anthony Yerkovich and executive producer Michael Mann. We also discuss the influence of Scarface on the production, the casting of playwright Miguel Piñero as Calderone, the Mozambique Drill, and the first appearance of “Crockett's Theme”. Miami Vice is currently available to watch for free on Tubi. Mathieu Hermans is a Dutch legend. He started racing in 1971 when he was 8-years-old. He didn't win right away when he was young. But by the time he was 15 he was raising his hands while riding across the finish line quite often. As an amateur he raced a number of World Championships for cyclocross and on the road. He even raced the great Tour de L' Avenir. He credits that race for making him realize he wasn't a climber. In 1984 Mathieu decided to turn pro for the Orbea - Campagnolo team. He says his first three years were all about learning his craft. Once he focused on sprinting he hit the ground running. You honestly have to think about the competition his was facing. I'll drop a few names for you like Guido Bontempi, Sean Kelly, Olaf Ludwig to Eric Vanderaerden. This man won 6 stages in one La Vuelta and 9 stages overall. Because he raced for mainly Spanish teams many people mistakenly believe he only won in Spanish races which is simply not true. He's won a stage in the Tour de France, Tour de Romandie, and Paris Camembert to name a few. In 1993 Mathieu retired. Over the years he's works as a commentator for Dutch TV, a team director and for the last 25 years he's been working for cycling clothing company Bio Racer. I hope you enjoy this interview with one of the greats of cycling.
Brian Hyland was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York City. He studied guitar and clarinet as a child, and sang in his church choir. When aged 14 he co-founded the harmony group the Del-Fi's, which recorded a demo but failed to secure a recording contract. Hyland was eventually signed by Kapp Records as a solo artist, issuing his debut single, "Rosemary", in late 1959. The label employed the Brill Building songwriting duo of Lee Pockriss and Paul Vance to work with Hyland on the follow-up, "Four Little Heels (The Clickety Clack Song)", which was a minor hit, and the songwriting duo continued to work with Hyland. In August 1960, Hyland scored his first and biggest hit single, at the age of 16, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", written by Vance and Pockriss. It was a novelty song that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (No. 8 in the UK) and sold almost a million copies in the first two months of its release and over two million copies in total. Hyland moved on to ABC-Paramount Records, where he began working with the songwriting and production team of Gary Geld and Peter Udell, and further hits followed with "Let Me Belong to You" and "I'll Never Stop Wanting You". In 1961, Hyland appeared as himself on the March 6 episode of the game show To Tell the Truth. He received three votes. Hyland's other major hit during this period was 1962's "Sealed with a Kiss", which reached No. 3 in 1962 on both the American and UK Singles Chart. Another 1962 hit was "Ginny Come Lately", which reached No. 21 on the U.S. chart and No. 5 in the UK. Hyland's 1962 Top 30 hit "Warmed-Over Kisses (Leftover Love)" incorporated elements of country music into his work, which continued with singles including "I May Not Live to See Tomorrow" and "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and on the 1964 album Country Meets Folk. This approach was out of step with the changes brought about by British Invasion bands. Hyland's commercial success became limited, but he continued that in vein and had further hits with "The Joker Went Wild" and "Run, Run, Look and See", working with producer Snuff Garrett and session musicians including J. J. Cale and Leon Russell. Hyland appeared on national television programs such as American Bandstand and The Jackie Gleason Show, and toured both internationally and around America with Dick Clark in the Caravan of Stars. The caravan was in Dallas, Texas, on the day of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. To commemorate the event,[according to whom?] Hyland wrote the song "Mail Order Gun", which he recorded and eventually released on his 1970 eponymous album. From 1963 through 1969, Hyland scored several minor hits, but none reached higher than No. 20 ("The Joker Went Wild") on the U.S. pop chart. An album released in 1964 featured numbers that hearkened back to the 1950s including such hits as "Pledging My Love" and "Moments to Remember"—at a time when The Beatles and other British Invasion acts were drowning out American artists. Hyland afterward shifted into a phase of recording country music and folk rock styles. Songs such as "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and "Two Brothers" had an American Civil War theme. Hyland played the harmonica on a few numbers. Hyland attempted several departures from the norm, including the psychedelic single "Get the Message" (No. 91 on the U.S. pop chart), and "Holiday for Clowns" (No. 94), but despite their more contemporary arrangements, they failed to get much airplay. He went on to chart just two more top 40 hits, both cover versions: "Gypsy Woman", a 1961 hit for the Impressions written by Curtis Mayfield, and "Lonely Teardrops", a 1959 hit for Jackie Wilson. Hyland recorded both in 1970, and Del Shannon produced the tracks. "Gypsy Woman" reached No. 3 on the 1970 U.S. pop chart, making it the second-biggest hit of his career, selling over one million copies, and being certified gold by the RIAA in January 1971. Two of his previous hits, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" and "Sealed with a Kiss", were also awarded gold discs. In 1975, "Sealed With A Kiss" became a hit again in the UK (No. 7) and Hyland performed the song on Top of the Pops on July 31 of the same year. By 1977, he and his family had settled in New Orleans, and in 1979 the In a State of Bayou album, on which he had worked with Allen Toussaint, was issued by the Private Stock label. In June 1988, Dutch singer Albert West asked Hyland to record with him some duets of Hyland's hits: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini", "Sealed With A Kiss", and "Ginny Come Lately". The latter song had been covered before by West in 1973, becoming a huge European hit and his biggest. Their duet of "Itsy Bitsy ..." was released as a single and reached No. 43 on the Dutch singles chart. Hyland and West performed on TV shows in Germany, Belgium and a Dutch TV special in Aruba. Hyland has continued to tour internationally.

At this point vocalist Floor Jansen barely needs an introduction. She's been the forceful frontwoman for Finnish metal band Nightwish since 2013, and before that she made a name for herself in metal bands After Forever and Re:Vamp. In more recent years, Floor has started to focus on her solo work as well, which included introducing herself to new audience through the popular Dutch TV show 'De Beste Zangers van Nederland', and now it's German counterpart 'Sing Meinen Song'. We spoke with Floor about her approach to songwriting, the song 'Fire', finding her own sound, Tuomas Holopainen's songwriting, still improving as a vocalist, working towards an album, and a lot more! Hello and welcome back to another episode of your favourite podcast, with three blind guys chatting about crochet... Oh, sorry, that's the other show we produce! Welcome to Blind Guys Chat. We're ready to bring you episode 15 of our fortnightly show, but it appears that all is not well with the Blind Guys. Stuart seems stressed and anxious and, as we'll hear, he hasn't been eating or sleeping. He ended up going to confession to talk about what's on his mind. We received an email on our last show to ask if the guys could share some of their funny travel stories. Well, ask and you shall receive, and the trio have a few funny and indeed in the case of Óran, a rather cute experience to recount. Oh, and how do the guys feel about being offered a wheelchair at airports? Do they have any tips for managing what can sometimes be a tricky and exasperating situation? Last time Clare Whelan introduced a two-part series looking at units of measurement and what has changed in the UEB code. This time she's back to conclude that with Óran O'Neill, her second-favourite Blind Guy. There's a new kid on the block in the form of the BrailleSense 6, the latest notetaker from Selvas Healthcare in Korea, which was launched at the recent CSUN assistive technology virtual conference. Stuart gives some details and tells us how we can find out more. Dave Nason is Accessibility Lead at Sky Ireland, and he's also one of the nicest guys you could meet. He's joining the guys to talk about a really exciting development where Sky are introducing some significant accessibility into the Sky Q box. Voice Guidance is an internal Screen Reader which can be activated from the Sky Q menu or working in tandem with Sky Q's Voice Control and existing accessibility features, Voice Guidance will make Sky Q even more accessible. Dave is here to talk about how it works and what you can do currently. If you want to know more, than sit tight, because so do Jan and Stuart. Luckily for us, Óran is a Sky Q customer, and has promised to demo this new and very exciting solution on the next show. When Dave Nason isn't working hard for Sky, he's working hard for Applevis, where he's part of their editorial team. And, he's interviewed one or two interesting people along the way. On the last show Jan introduced us to 'Who's the Mole?', a Dutch TV show. Well, good news is that we've an update from Jan who confirms that audio description for the show is now available! Stuart has been watching 'Deadwater Fell' on All 4 and gives it a good rating, and Óran is still working through season two of 'For All Mankind'. Clodagh is back, sounding as great as ever, and ready to read more emails. This week, Robin Christopherson, host of the very popular 'Dot to Dot' podcast, and 'The Echo Show' has been in touch. Watch this space, because Robin will be coming on the show soon. Jan gets the most fan mail of the three guys, and this week he's got another one! And, we have a nice recommendation for a coffee with chocolate and baileys. We think Stuart might test that one out soon. Remember to keep in touch by email to BlindGuysChat@gmail.com or send us a tweet @BlindGuysChat. And Clodagh is asking our listeners to record messages and send them to us so that we can play them on the show!
We are back with the all-around talented comedian Mike Eshaq and are also joined by local comedian Gary Zajackowski. This week we talk about Karen fights, how to steal a package, stuffed animal sex, vasectomy mayhem, ruining your enemies day, Dutch TV at it again, Burger King tweeting like a king would, miss piggy, and much more.
What will future space habitats for humans on the Moon or Mars look like? What do we need to consider when we design habitats for outer space? Dr. Samer El Sayary designs future habitats for outer space. He is a practicing Architect and Assistant Professor at the Beirut Arab university. https://www.samerelsayary.com. Here, Dr Sayary is interviewed by Andrea Macdonald, Founder of ideaXme. Listen to this interview, not only to hear of his unique approach to designing for both Earth and Space - see his international award winning designs for human space habitats. Dr. Sayary pushes the boundaries of experimental design combining cutting edge science and technology to produce new realms of architectural design that addresses both problems on earth as well as outer space. Sayary has received over 36 international and national architecture awards. He has been the recipient of the prestigious Hassan Fathy Award twice. His works are recognized and published widely in many local and international media appearances including in Wired Magazine and the Discovery Channel. Transcript: Andrea Macdonald, Founder, ideaXme: [00:00:17] It's just a matter of time before humans inhabit the Moon and Mars. But what sort of habitats are we going to design to survive there? I'm here with a multi-award winning architect who has considered this question. In your words, who are you? Dr. Samer El Sayary, Assistant Professor of Architecture: [00:00:59] My name is Samer El Sayary. I'm an Assistant Professor of architecture, at Beirut Arab University. I'm a researcher and an award-winning architect. I have a special passion for outer space architecture. I graduated 20 years ago in 2001, at the top of my class. Through the years have gained over 36 awards and prizes. Most of them are from international institutes, across four different continents. I served as a Mars City Design ambassador for three years in Los Angeles, and that was because I was awarded the first prize in 2017. I've also served at The Jacques Rougerie Foundation as a junior ambassador in Paris, which I have been doing for the last two years and I still represent them. Dr. Samer El Sayary, Assistant Professor in Architecture: [00:01:55] I've succeeded in exhibiting my work in several countries, including NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston in 2019. I've exhibited in France twice in 2016 and 2020. In Greece during 2015, in Tunisia during 2011 and in Egypt in 2011 and 2013 during some prestigious awards and honours. My work has been featured in the Discovery Channel UK, on Dutch TV in California Dreamers, Wired Magazine in 2017, Up- Magazine, L’arca magazine, Architectural d'aujordhui, universetoday.com, designboom.com, archdaily.com, spacearchitect.org, among many others. Dr. Samer El Sayary, Assistant Professor in Architecture: [00:02:33] I see myself belonging to the first generation of space architects who will write the future, turning science fiction into design reality. We see ourselves as the people who will pave the road for humanity to survive and thrive outside of Earth in the near future and on Earth as well, by using existing technologies or near future technologies. Dr. Samer El Sayary, Assistant Professor in Architecture: [00:03:31] I can define myself as a science-tect. It's a new expression that means an experimental architect who uses science in making architecture and then experiments with this architecture and finally, produces scientific papers. As a by-product of the awarded projects, just a couple of weeks ago, I succeeded in publishing in the Q1 Scientific Journal, Solar Energy Journal. I work in a closed loop circular way, starting by reading science, producing architecture and then experimenting with this architecture, reaching new conclusions and then writing new scientific papers. Dr. Samer El Sayary, Assistant Professor in Architecture: [00:05:20] I do believe that we are living in this era and we have a responsibility to take all of this accumulated science and rethink it, redefine it using cutting edge technology, what we have today and what is available today and to anticipate what will be available in the near future. Dr. Mindy Howard’s company, Innerspace Training helps commercial astronauts become more mentally prepared before they go into space, so they can get the most out of their mission. During this engaging dialogue, Mindy explains to Beth how we can all work to engage in and implement this “Overview Effect” in our lives, a deep connection to everywhere and everyone. Dr. Mindy Howard is symbolic of someone who has set out to passionately achieve her dreams and is reaching the uppermost heights in her chosen field. American and Dutch, Dr. Howard obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Industrial Engineering in the United States and her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. Now living in the Netherlands, Mindy’s life ambition was always to become an astronaut. Narrowed down from thousands to the last 200 candidates, she was selected by NASA as a “Highly Qualified Astronaut Candidate”, following the conclusion of her Ph.D. Despite not making the final selection to become an astronaut, she refused to let her dream go without a fight. Having worked internationally as a sustainability manager, strategy leader, diversity and inclusiveness manager, people manager, and trainer in several blue-chip corporations. Mindy’s background started out in the oil industry. In her last job at Royal Dutch Shell, she was the Sustainability Manager in one of the global businesses as she tried to change hearts and minds, within the company and the leadership, to become more sustainable. Travelling the globe, working in over 35 different countries in extreme environments (e.g. offshore), Mindy was able to explore different countries and appreciate different people and their cultures. After leaving the oil industry, Mindy decided to reignite her dream and complete her training on what it felt like to be a commercial astronaut while undergoing 6Gs in a human centrifuge. It was when she saw others in the training struggling in the centrifuge, that she saw a need to help commercial astronauts psychologically prepare for the rigours of space flight. Striving towards her goal of becoming an astronaut, and wanting to help others do the same, Mindy harnessed her academic and professional skills to create the first and only psychological space training for commercial astronauts, called “Inner Space Training”, in the emerging field of commercial/new space. In addition, Mindy is working for Blue Abyss Ltd., the world’s first commercial astronaut training centre as the Director of Inner Space Training. As one of the few commercial astronaut trainers in this new field, she has been asked to accompany a team of people who will win a “once in a lifetime” trip to space. The competition, called ‘Career Astronauts’, will see Mindy take on the role of astronaut trainer and coach for the lucky winners and will achieve her dream by flying with them to space in 2023. Other astronaut training that she has personally undergone includes, experiencing weightlessness in a Parabolic Flight, High-G Tolerance training, Simulated Space Flight Experience, Hypobaric (High altitude) Training, Situational Awareness Training, SIRIUS Space Disorientation and Motion Sickness Training and Unusual attitude training to name but a few. A fully trained flight member for the Association of Spaceflight Professionals, Dr. Howard has also written and presented publications on a variety of subjects at various international scientific and space conferences. Her extensive knowledge has resulted in appearances in the media, both on national TV, Discovery Channel, Dutch TV and radio as a “space correspondent” both in the United States and in Europe. She is also a TEDx speaker with the title, “Train your fear away, like an astronaut”. She has just recently published her book called, Blast Off! Train like an astronaut for success on earth”. Blast Off! is the first book to use the techniques of commercial astronaut training to help people right here on earth maintain the anxiety-free emotional equilibrium and sustained mental focus needed to successfully overcome the day-to-day challenges and obstacles in their personal and professional lives. On Sunday the Dutch group The Analogues, who have set out to play the Beatles songs that the Beatles never played live, using the same equipment that was used fifty years ago, recreated the whole of "Abbey Road" in Studio 1 at Abbey Road. Mark and David were there and they haven't stopped babbling about it since. Hence we thought they should share their enthusiasm with the wider public. This conversation was recorded via Skype which is prone to the odd drop-out but we trust you'll find it worth listening round. If you want to get an idea of why they considered it so remarkable, watch this clip from a recent Dutch TV show. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Harry Bannink (1929 – 1999) was a Dutch composer, arranger and pianist. he had an amazing output: he wrote over 3,000 songs! He wrote music for several Dutch musicals, Dutch TV-shows (including "Ja zuster, nee zuster"), and a weekly (!) children's TV show. If only the Beatles had written songs at the same rate as Bannink, then we would have another 30 Beatles albums.... In Lennon & McCartney's defense, we should mention that Bannink only wrote the music; he used a number of well know lyrics writers and - Dutch - poets to write the lyrics for his songs; he usually started with a text, and then wrote the music for it. Bannink and the Beatles were contemporary composers, and there as striking similarities: - like McCartney, his music is very 'melodic', certainly compared to post 60's music where the rhythm (percussion) becomes more and more important. - like Lennon, Bannink used complex rhythms, and changed the rhythm during a song - one key success factor that they all display, is that the words and music match so well together. Bannink is a master in having his music express the same emotions as the lyrics. Words and music intertwine, and Bannink wrote his melodies with specific voices (usually of actors) in mind. - As composers, it is evident that they were influenced by other songwriters, and in many cases they would identify their influences themselves. But these influences added to their music, they didn't imitate their examples. Bannink - obviously - knew the music of the Beatles, but he wasn't a great fan; it's just not his style of music. But he admitted that for some of his songs he took inspiration from Beatles tracks. One of these songs is entitled "Wil u een stekkie". This song is about plants called "Fuchsia", a popular garden shrub, which can live for years with a minimal amount of care. The word "Fuchsia" is repeated endlessly in the song. The lyrics were written by Annie M.G. Schmidt who was unaware that the word had other meanings in English. Only one of the singers (an Englishman) had trouble keeping a straight face.... Bannink himself mentioned that "Wil u een stekkie" was inspired by "When I'm 64", and he quotes this Beatles song in its intro. But he makes "Wil u een stekkie" very much a Bannink song. To showcase the relationship between "Wil u een stekkie" and 'When I'm 64" we have produced a mash-up of those 2 songs. It nicely demonstrates that Bannink and McCartney were a close match in composing this kind of nostalgic tune. And you can hear more about Bannink (in Dutch...) at: https://soundcloud.com/avrotros/fab4cast-81-bannink-beatles-bonte-bespiegelingen
This week on the ACP with Greg and Jonathan, our long-unaired, utterly fascinating interview with the quite brilliant Canadian comedian Pete Johansson. We did this at the end of 2013 and it’s shocking to hear not only how quickly the world has changed, but also how prescient Pete was. He predicted Trudeau becoming PM. However the android takeover of the world has yet to happen. This extraordinary conversation is THE reason we make this show. Enjoy! Jaap van Heusden has been a successful filmmaker in the Netherlands for a number of years, though sadly he is not so well-known in the UK. Having met at the L'Abri Fellowship in Hampshire in March 2013, we discussed his various influences, his aims as a creative artist and what keeps him going during the often interminably long process of making a movie. In particular, we talked about his latest film, THE NEW WORLD (De Nieuwe Wereld) which will be broadcast on national Dutch TV in April 2013.
