Ted is joined by Kirthana Ramisetti, author of the novels Advika and the Hollywood Wives and Dava Shastri's Last Day, a Good Morning America Book Club selection optioned by Max. Her books have been praised by TIME, Cosmopolitan, The Washington Post, Buzzfeed, The Associated Press, and others. Beyond her novels, Kirthana's writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Elle, and Salon. She just finished the copyediting stage for her next novel, a case of mistaken identity titled The Other Lata. It comes out in April of next year, and it was a great time to talk with her about what her process looked like for this book in particular. In addition to humoring a question from Ted about Oxford commas and punctuation in general, she discusses the challenge of avoiding dangling plot lines that leave the reader hanging as well as the music-fueled writing sessions that allowed her to complete a first draft in one month. They then move onto what will be Kirthana's fourth book, one she is just in the early stages of writing right now and for which she is pushing herself to go in a direction she hasn't tried in her first three. She compares drafting to going on a hike, with her synopsis acting as the path to help her plot her way—even as she and Ted agree that synopsis writing is not among their favorite tasks—and highlights the importance of the little ways writers can make the process fun for themselves. Finally, as has become tradition these several last months, Kirthana hits Ted with a rom-com recommendation to wrap things up. Find Kirthana Online:Kirthana's website: kirthanaramisetti.comWorking Drafts episodes and info for requesting transcripts as well as more details about Ted and his books are available on his website, thetedfox.com.

Welcome to the second episode of our Jackie July extravaganza! This one is on Hollywood Wives, which was reissued this month. Many things happen in this book to many people! Some of them seem medically improbable! Watch Elaine, Ross, Neil, Montana, Gina, Buddy, Angel, Randy, Karen, and more as they call each other on the telephone and have exhausting sex with each other!  It's bananas and complicated but it is a ton of fun. Content warnings in this book: everything. Literally everything. We got sex murdering, incest, Evil Gays, Evil Lesbians, a ton of sexualization and trafficking of young teenagers, a genuinely upsetting botched abortion, baby selling - it's in there.  (Surprisingly, this has a lot less weight talk and disordered eating than Scruples?  Then again, the modelling industry has less weight talk and disordered eating than Scruples.) We also talk about the launch of our new Patreon subscriber bonus episodes, starting with the Hollywood Wives miniseries - now sadly delayed for the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, because even a 1985 TV miniseries is struck work.  Yes, greedy billionaires are standing in between you and finding out what Candace Bergen as Elaine wore to the party she hosted an hour after getting out of department store lockup!  What can you do to support striking workers, you ask?  If you're local to a picket line, you can join the picket or donate food and water - check the WGA and SAG-AFTRA picket schedules! You can also donate to fundraisers like the Entertainment Community Fund - remember, most striking workers aren't rich A-list stars, and they're giving up a lot to strike.

Happy New Year! We're kicking 2018 off by chatting about Jackie Collins' catty bonkbuster Hollywood Wives. Content Warning! This episode talks about sex. Like a lot, because we're talking about a book by Jackie Collins. It's not hot sex, it's not even lukewarm sex, but we still talk about it. Honestly it's everything we wanted, and maybe even a little more. And Corinne makes several baseball metaphors that are not the ones you'd expect. Our next book discussion is going to be about Louise Erdrich's Future Home of the Living God. You can find it at your local bookstore or library and read along with us!

Becca and Corinne talk about a being tourists in the country of New Zealand, about how some english words don't mean what you think and others mean a lot of things, and about the book Corinne went there to buy (j/k that would be an irresponisble financial decision), Witi Ihimaera's The Whale Rider. Corinne pronounces almost all things wrong, consider this sentence this week's "Words is Hard." Next week we're reading Hollywood Wives by Jackie Collins so don't freak out because it's kinda dirty. Books mentioned:The Whale Rider, Witi Ihimaera; The Bone People, Keri Hulme; The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton; Mister Pip, Lloyd Jones; Wild Pork and Watercress, Barry Crump. And an author from Australia: Shirley Hazard And a movie: Hunt for the Wilderpeople The music clip: Christmas in New Zealand by The Long Ryders

You wanted the best, you got the best, in the form of the trashiest trash novel we have seen yet, Jackie Collins' Hollywood Wives. Hard sex? Check. Sprawling set of (unlikeable) characters? Check. Spaghetti-like plot that's somehow simultaneously insultingly simple and somewhat difficult to keep track of? Check! And then we get to the third chapter and things really pop off. The first book we've read that includes a villain sneering an actual playground taunt ("that's for me to know and you to find out" is an actual line of dialogue in this one, people)+ takes us new places in real sleaze and ushers in a new, tawdry age of the podcast, a leopard-print age, an age where NaNoWriMo-level music references somehow don't keep a novel from selling millions of copies, but, regrettably, also an age where every person is an ethnic stereotype and nobody is at all pleasant to be around. +But, we hope, not the last. We hope you think this one is worth the wait. We sure think it's worth it's weight in gold -- Golden GLOBES that is!   Recommendations: "Cat Person" by Kristen Roupenian "Priest Daddy" by Tricia Lockwood "Magpie Murders" by Anthony Horowitz Music: "Still in Hollywood" by Concrete Blonde "Passion" by Rod Stewart "Los Angeles" by Frank Black

Get with it, it's the 90's. This week Becca and Corinne discuss Han Kang's first novel to be published in English, The Vegetarian. They find out that even though it is a mere 150 pages long it is difficult. Some slight content warnings regarding sexual assault and mental illness. Next time they're reading Hollywood Wives by everyone's favorite sexy aunt, Jackie Collins. Pick it up at your local bookstore or library and read along! Here's the interview with Book Page that Corinne mentions.

Where Hollywood Hides: Television | Movies | Music | Show Business | Writing | Producing | Directing | Acting

Celebrating their milestone 10th episode, Suzanne bathes in the afterglow of Ben Affleck’s Argo win as Best Motion Picture at the 2013 Academy Awards, but chastises the show’s producers not having someone on hand to catch Jennifer Lawrence when she took a tumble on her way to accept her Oscar.  Suzanne mentions the birthday of an iconic I Love Lucy star, and Bob recalls being on the Paramount Studios lot with Lucy where Desi Arnaz reinvented the way sitcoms are shot.  We then learn about the gloriously indulged life of a writer-producer working under contract to Aaron Spelling and Suzanne shares details of Spelling’s background that eventually led him to become the most powerful TV producer in history. When Spelling handed Bob Jackie Collins’ Hollywood Wives to read, it was the beginning of an incredible year that had him hob-nobbing with major showbiz icons like Rod Steiger, Candace Bergin, Robert Stack, Suzanne Somers, Angie Dickenson, Joanna Cassidy, Stephanie Powers, and the man who would later become “Hannibal Lecter”, Anthony Hopkins. Suzanne finally gets Bob to admit that he was a bit of an early sleaze-meister while astutely drawing the parallel between Hollywood Wives and today’s Kardashians, proving her theory that little has changed when it comes to attracting an audience because “it’s all entertainment.”
