Low-head dams likely wouldn't catch the attention of a person floating down a river on a paddle board or inner tube. The unassuming structures can have drops as low as 1 foot, appearing as little more than a smooth bump in otherwise calm waters. But the continuous motion of water over the top of the dam creates a dangerous vortex at its base. As recently reported in the Register Guard, the churn can trap swimmers, kayakers and others recreating in the water, earning them the nickname “drowning machines.” Haleigh Kochanski covers breaking news and public safety for the Register-Guard. She joins us with more details about these dams and the dangers they present.

This was a special episode for Kirsten as she got to talk to her book coach, Bob Welch. If you follow her book journey, she often mentions Bob, an amazing coach and partner who took everything that she threw at him and condensed it down and made each story stronger. Bob and Kirsten were so excited to talk to each other that Bob jumped in before she even introduced him! It's a true partnership. As Kirsten states in the podcast, “you're the poster child for exactly what I want to do, which is it's to be an athlete for life. The fact that you took Seven Summer (And a Few Bummers) to do the Pacific Coast Trail in your 60s, right?” Bob and Kirsten talk about how humility, perseverance and flexibility (hello Covid!) were the right combination to get Raising Empowered Athletes finished. BOB WELCH is the author of more than two dozen books, including "The Wizard of Foz," Track & Field Writers of America's 2019 Book of the Year, and "American Nightingale," an Oregon Book Award finalist and featured on ABC's "Good Morning America." As a columnist for "The Register-Guard" in Eugene, Oregon, Welch twice won the National Society of Newspaper Columnist's "Best Writing" award. He's also a winner of the Seattle Times C.B. Blethen Award for Distinguished Feature Writing. Welch is a former adjunct professor at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, and founder of the Beachside Writers Workshop in Yachats, Oregon. As a speaker, Welch has keynoted conferences across America. A storyteller by nature, Welch mines much of his speaking fodder from his books and the nearly 2,000 columns he wrote for The Register-Guard, Oregon's second-largest newspaper. Articles of Welch's have been published in more than a dozen books, including seven in the popular “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. In addition, he has had articles published in such magazines as "Sports Illustrated," "Los Angeles Times," "Reader's Digest," and "Runner's World." He and his wife, Sally, live in Eugene. The past year has brought tremendous change in Oregon's newspaper landscape, with the closure of the Mail Tribune in Medford and the struggles of the Register-Guard and Statesman-Journal under corporate ownership. Business reporter Jeff Manning took a extensive look at the decline of the two longstanding daily newspapers in the Willamette Valley. He found the corporate ownership of the papers resulted in diminished newsrooms and resources for reporting. Just six people remain in the Register-Guard's newsroom, for instance. Since his article was published, the Albany Democrat Herald and Corvallis Gazette Times, which share ownership, announced they would reduce print publication to just three days a week and move to the postal service for delivery. The Oregonian/OregonLive moved to four-day home delivery 10 years ago, while still publishing seven days a week. On this episode of Beat Check with The Oregonian, Editor Therese Bottomly discusses Manning's findings with him and also Regina Lawrence, lead author on last year's report, “Assessing Oregon's Local News and Information Ecosystem 2022.” Along with co-author Agora Journalism Center Director Andrew DeVigal, Lawrence described in detail the decline of local newsrooms as well as the cost to local communties in terms of civic engagement and public oversight. Both Lawrence and Manning point to bright spots as well: increased collaboration among Oregon news organizations and the rise of some online-only newsrooms around the state such as the Salem Reporter, the Oregon Capital Chronicle, YachatsNews and more. As well, locally owned EO Media Group moved to establish a new Rogue Valley publication and the Grants Pass Daily Courier expanded into Medford as well. In this episode, Alan and Liz chat about Kara Goucher's recently released book, The Longest Race. They'll tell you what they learned, what they thought, and why they wanted to read the book in the first place.Kara Goucher grew up with Olympic dreams. She excelled at running from a young age and was offered a Nike sponsorship deal when she graduated from college. Then in 2004, she was invited to join a secretive, lavishly funded new team, dubbed the Nike Oregon Project. Coached by distance running legend Alberto Salazar, it seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime. Although Alberto initially let her train with the team because he was more interested in her husband Adam, his focus shifted once she won a World Championship medal. She later went to the Olympics, and stood on the podium at the New York and Boston marathons, just like her coach. Those podiums are what the world saw, but behind the scenes, Salazar pushed the limits of anti-doping rules, and created what Kara experienced as a culture of abuse, the extent of which she reveals in her book for the first time. Meanwhile, Nike stood by Alberto for years and proved itself capable of shockingly misogynistic corporate practices.Kara Goucher is a three-time NCAA champion, two-time Olympian, winner of the silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in the 10,000 meters, and a podium finisher at the Boston and New York Marathons. She is a running analyst for NBC Sports. She cohosts the hit running commentary podcast Nobody Asked Us with Des & Kara, as well as the Clean Sport Collective podcast, promoting fair play in sports. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, with her Olympic-runner husband, Adam, and their son, Colt. The number of vehicles impounded in the city of Eugene tripled from 2020 to 2022. Advocates for people experiencing homelessness say that cars, recreational vehicles, campers and other vehicles serving as makeshift homes make up a significant portion of what's impounded. Many cannot afford to get their vehicles back and lose all their belongings and what little shelter they had, worsening their plight. Others may not have the title for their vehicle. Towing companies sometimes have to pay to get rid of the vehicles they're stuck with, some of which contain hazardous materials that are expensive to dispose of. We talk with the Register Guard reporter Tatiana Parafiniuk-Talesnick who looked into these numbers and the broader policy implications.

Brent Walth is one of Oregon's most decorated journalists. Now a professor at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, he previously worked as a reporter for the Register Guard, Willamette Week, and The Oregonian. In 2000, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and in 2001, he won the prize, along with three colleagues at The O.   Walth is the author of Fire at Eden's Gate: Tom McCall and the Oregon Story, one of the best books about Oregon ever written. It tells the story of the man who may be the most influential governor in modern Oregon history: Tom McCall. McCall was a giant personality with an outsized impact on the state. He is best remembered for a series of groundbreaking environmental policies, including Oregon's public beach bill, the bottle bill, the Willamette River cleanup, and--perhaps most relevant today--Oregon's land use planning system.   Here's the thesis: if you want to understand contemporary Oregon politics, you have to understand Tom McCall and his legacy. Most governors that followed McCall have tried, in some way, to emulate his image, oratory, style, or policy impact. A progressive Republican, McCall helped establish Oregon's identity as a place with independent spirit and a heart for environmental protection. He helped build our reputation as place where innovation and creative policy-making happens.   McCall was not perfect. He cold be thin-skinned, had a quick temper, and craved the validation of voters. But he also consistently stood up to powerful interests and always spoke his mind--and no one loved Oregon more than Tom McCall. In this episode with McCall's biographer, we discuss his lasting legacy--and why he still matters today.

In the January 2023 issue of Editor & Publisher Magazine, E&P featured an article about Dr. Peter Laufer's book, “Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer,” and the subsequent film documentary "Slow News" that speaks to how media companies chasing "clicks" in a digital age has led to the erosion of quality journalism and the public's trust. However, what this professor of journalism and James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon was chasing was a personal dream to save the local cities newspaper — The Eugene (OR) Register-Guard. In a recent article for the local weekly entitled "How to Save the 'Guarded-Register, ' Dr. Laufer writes, "We in Eugene are witnessing the slow murder of our daily newspaper. But maybe, just maybe, what's rapidly becoming too thin to wrap fish and line the bird cage, can still be saved." He goes on to state, "When what's now the Gannett Company — the corporate monster that owns more U.S. newspapers than any other — bought the R-G, butchery began: de facto pink slips to venerable reporters and editors and photographers in the form of buyouts, and local news coverage replaced with outdated reporting from elsewhere via Gannett's USA TODAY network.” Dr. Laufer also recently published an op-ed for Inside Higher Ed entitled "A Plan to Save the Daily Paper." He told the story of how he approached Gannett to explore the idea of having his students take over the newspaper writing. Within the piece, he reports that he began the process by calling CEO Mike Reed and was connected to Amalie Nash, the Gannett senior vice president of local news and audience development, who performed a “gracious” entrée to Gannett's senior vice president for corporate development, Jay Fogarty. Laufer states that Fogarty wrote a note to him saying that “the Register-Guard is a paper we plan to own and operate long-term." However, in a subsequent phone conversation about the idea of offering the paper to the University, Laufer writes that Fogarty said, "I'm all for it when the paper stops making money. Glad we're talking. But at this point, it does make some money." In this 173rd episode of “E&P Reports,” we go one-on-one with Peter Laufer, Ph.D., an award-winning journalist, professor of journalism, James N. Wallace Chair of Journalism at the University of Oregon and author of "Slow News: A Manifesto for the Critical News Consumer." We ask Laufer about his recent campaign to get Gannett to donate the city's paper of record, The Eugene Register-Guard, to the school and his views on the media industry today.

Erin and Rachel liked this film about as much as 1985 audiences did, and not just because of the misogyny and white-washed cast. Even innovative animation technology couldn't save the meandering script and annoying characters.Episode BibliographyBerman, T., & Rich, R. (Directors). (1985). The Black Cauldron [Film]. Developers of the Northwest Forest Plan urge permanent protection for mature forests

The health and vitality of forest ecosystems in the Northwest, and how much timber should be cut from those forests, is laid out in the Northwest Forest Plan. But that plan was created in the mid-1990s, and has not changed substantially since then, says Norm Johnson, one of its developers. He and his longtime colleague, Jerry Franklin, recently penned an opinion piece in The Register Guard newspaper, opposing the planned logging of about 2,000 acres of mature trees (100 -150 years old) in Oregon's Willamette National Forest. Johnson and Franklin say that in the time since the plan was written, forestry science has yielded a much deeper understanding of the ecological importance of these trees, including how they sequester carbon and provide habitat for countless species. Johnson and Franklin join us to discuss what's at stake with this specific planned cut, and why they think new science should change the direction of forest management in Oregon.

Angela McAnulty was no stranger to trauma after growing up in a household of abuse and tragically losing her mother to murder in 1973. After being arrested for drugs and having her children taken away, she went to jail and then got clean in the hopes of restarting her life. However when the opportunity came, rather than a reunion filled with laughter, love, and the start of a wonderful new beginning, she became a monster. In today’s case, you’ll learn the horrific story of what happened to 15 year old Jeanette Maples at the hands of the people who should have protected her. Angela McAnulty’s trial was notorious in Oregon as it was one of the few death penalty cases against a woman and brings the idea of “justice” to a new light. Simply put, Cullen Vance is incredibly talented -- and incredibly resilient. He's a storyteller, an artist, an editor, a film maker, but above all a musician. The Register-Guard newspaper put it this way, about his album "Cullen Vol. 1 ": "The mood...moves through relaxing jazz, Andrew Bird-like violin plucking and sparse silhouettes that echo Bon Iver's stark, contemplative pieces. The album's a stirring mix all held together by Vance's enthusiastic musical exploration."He's a creator- -a talented game and web designer, an animator, an actor, a teacher who hosted live Harry Potter-themed day camps, among other things -- and he composes music to score plays and films. Of late, he has been exploring live performing with ecstatic dance troupes. Fun questions to look for are: How many instruments can he actually play? (answer: a LOT!). Give it a listen and see if you can spot the rare instrument Vance plays for our audience from his large collection. Also, big new announcement with Vance's new album, just in time for St. Patrick's Day.Find his music here: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cullenvance/irish-chillFind his website here:https://www.cullenvancecreative.com/--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/resilientpodcastnetwork/message

This episode of the Emerald Podcast Network, news reporter Andy Field has a discussion with two guests. Retired University of Oregon English professor Dr. Edwin Coleman was a UO graduate student during the ’60s, taught at the university since 1972 and started its ethnic studies department. Also, invited is André Lightsey-Walker, who is a UO senior majoring in philosophy. Last week, Coleman wrote a column in the Register-Guard condemning the response by the university community after it was revealed on Nov. 1, in a photo taken by an anonymous source, that UO law professor Nancy Shurtz wore blackface during her private Halloween party. Shurtz is currently on paid administrative leave, as the campus’s Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity investigates whether her actions are a violation of university policy. Field, Coleman and Lightsey-Walker discussed topics such as the history of blackface, whether Shurtz should resign, as well as the Black Student Task Force demands to create a more inclusive campus for black students. This episode was produced by Emerson Malone. Music by Evan DuPell.
