Professor Jeffrey Sachs, having become a staple of the disruptive discourse that is so valued on Uncensored, joins Piers Morgan yet again for a one-to-one interview on the state of the world. The most shocking development over recent days has been the rapid advance of Syrian rebel troops and their capture of the City of Aleppo. Sachs tries to explain that the conflict is extremely complicated, but that the main culprit is none other than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He argues that Netanyahu has managed to drag the US military into wars against Israel's adversaries, and that the fighting in Syria is just one part of his ongoing strategy. In Sachs' mind, the world would be a better place if America just didn't get involved. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The November 1970 coup that brought Hafiz al-Asad to power fundamentally transformed cultural production in Syria. A comprehensive intellectual, ideological, and political project—a Ba'thist cultural revolution—sought to align artistic endeavors with the ideological interests of the regime. The ensuing agonistic struggle pitted official aesthetics of power against alternative modes of creative expression that could evade or ignore the effects of the state. In Revolutions Aesthetic: A Cultural History of Ba'thist Syria (Stanford University Press, 2022), Max Weiss offers the first cultural and intellectual history of Ba'thist Syria, from the coming to power of Hafiz al-Asad, through the transitional period under Bashar al-Asad, and continuing up through the Syria War. The book reconceptualizes contemporary Syrian politics, authoritarianism, and cultural life. Engaging rich original sources—novels, films, and cultural periodicals—Weiss highlights themes crucial to the making of contemporary Syria: heroism and leadership, gender and power, comedy and ideology, surveillance and the senses, witnessing and temporality, and death and the imagination. Revolutions Aesthetic places front and center the struggle around aesthetic ideology that has been key to the constitution of state, society, and culture in Syria over the course of the past fifty years. Hello and welcome to the final episode of War College.Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. We’re just becoming Angry Planet. From time to time we record things that, for whatever reason, don’t quite work. Sometimes the audio is bad. Sometimes the news cycle destroys the story. Sometimes the the very famous, big name podcast host you have on as a guest is clearly drunk and loses his end of the audio. Sometimes you find out the guest is a CIA agent who never set foot in the country he’s talking about and decide to scrap the episode. The following audio is almost one of those episodes, but I think it’s still worth a listen. Back in May just before Jason returned to the show I talked with the British journalist Gareth Browne about Syria, Russia, and Iran. We talked the geopolitics of the region and what’s been happening since Solemani’s death. Some of the information here is out of date, and there’s places where the audio is a little … scratchy. But I think this was a good conversation about some vital stuff and I thought it’d be nice to go out on something like this before we officially launch Angry Planet. We’re clearing the backlog, so to speak. Thanks for listening, we’ll miss War College but we know we’ll be happier as Angry Planet.Recording 5/26/20Russia’s goals in SyriaThe roots of Russia and the Assad family’s relationshipHow much of the country does Assad still control?Iran backed militias in Syria“War has changed”How the death of Qasem Soleimani changes everythingThe court politics of Russia, Syria, and IranThe legacy of Hafez al-Assad See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Emile Hokayem, IISS Senior Fellow for Middle East Security, joins Dr Kori Schake for this episode of Sounds Strategic.Emile and Kori give a masterclass in understanding the Middle East and political violence. Emile explains the misconceptions surrounding the state of Iraq before the 2003 invasion, what non-proliferation experts miss about Bashar al-Assad's use of chemical weapons, and the problematic notion that Iran and Saudi Arabia can and should share the Middle East, thus making it possible for the US to adopt an ‘offshore balancing' posture, and much more.Emile responds to the US recognition of Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and reflects on his recent analysis of the continuation of the Arab Spring, stating that ‘the ebb and flow of street protests will be the new normal.'Emile is perfectly placed to explore the question of conflict in the Middle East, having grown up in Lebanon during some of the most intense years of the civil war, studied in the US during the invasion of Iraq, and used his expertise to conduct field research across the region. With a brief that is constantly in the news, his work and comments are referenced regularly in leading outlets.Favourite data visualisationThe impacts of climate change at 1.5C, 2C and beyond | Carbon Briefhttps://interactive.carbonbrief.org/impacts-climate-change-one-point-five-degrees-two-degrees/Map of Syria: situation as of January 2019, featured in ‘The US withdrawal from Syria' (IISS Strategic Comment, vol. 25, no. 1, January 2019: https://www.iiss.org/publications/strategic-comments/2019/the-us-withdrawal-from-syria)Reading recommendations:Stathis Kalyvas, The Logic of Violence in Civil Wars (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006) Further writings on Syria and the regional context by Emile:How Syria defeated the Sunni powers (New York Times, 30 December 2016)‘Assad or we burn the country': misreading sectarianism and the regime in Syria (War on the Rocks, 24 August 2016)Obama's disastrous betrayal of the Syrian rebels (Foreign Policy, 4 February 2016)Iran, the Gulf States and the Syrian Civil War (Survival, vol. 56, no. 6, November 2014) Date of recording: 25 March 2019Sounds Strategic is recorded and produced at the IISS in London.Theme music: ‘Safety in Numbers' by We Were Promised Jetpacks. Long the crossroads of civilizations, Syria has now spent seven years as the proxy warzone of great powers. With over half a million dead and millions more displaced, the conflict is now “arguably the world’s largest humanitarian disaster since World War II,” writes Andrew Tabler in The Atlantic. “The Syrian Civil War now threatens to morph into the Syria War—a regional conflagration which seems likely to burn for a generation. And civilians are cursed to live it, and die in it, every day.” How did we get here? And what comes next? Hassan Diab, a young boy from Douma, Syria didn't know he was being recruited for a "chemical attack" video that was made by some local rebels, and, that went viral. The US, UK and France used this type of evidence to justify a military strike on Syria. Evgeny Poddubny, a war correspondent from Russian broadcaster VGTRK, found the boy in the video. Hassan's "story differed from the one presented by the activists and later propagated by the mainstream media. He was in the basement with his mother, who said they ran out of food, when they heard some noise outside. 'Somebody was shouting that we had to go to the hospital, so we went there. When I came in, some people grabbed me and started pouring water over my head,' he told Evgeny Poddubny...Hassan confirmed that he was the boy in the video, and was very scared when the whole situation unfolded. He is now fine and shows no symptoms of having experienced a chemical attack two weeks ago." This 2 minute video should lead any honest observer to question the US government's policy of shooingt first and asking questions later. Why is another deadly gas attack on a rebel area near Damascus instantly blamed on the government of Syria by the US and her allies, without proof? This charge makes no sense as Syria and her allies are winning the war against ISIS and the other opposition jihadists. Is this another false flag operation like the two similar chemical weapons attacks in 2013 and 2017. It sounds like deja vu to We Hold These Truths and another attempt by the US to keep our war based economy going. In this 24 minute podcast, Chuck Carlson and members of We Hold These Truths analyze what is going on in Syria. This video analysis, "War In Syria: This Could Be The End" by Stefan Molyneux is referenced and recommended in the podcast. Also, Fox News' Tucker Carlson's report confirms what we are saying: "Must See Report on Syria War by Fox Newsman, Tucker Carlson."
On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Ambassador Peter Ford, the former British Ambassador to Syria, and Ajamu Baraka, a longtime human rights activist, organizer, and political activist, and the 2016 Green Party nominee for Vice President of the United States. President Trump yesterday promised a “forceful response” to the alleged chemical attack in Syria, adding that the United States has an array of military options available to it. The President also said he would skip this week’s Latin American summit so that he could focus on Syria. Meanwhile, Russia called for a United Nations investigation of the chemical attack and warned the US that a military response against Syria would be met with “severe repercussions,” while members of Congress began beating the drums for military intervention in Syria.Tuesday’s weekly series continues, looking at the top economic issues of the day, focusing on Trump’s criticism of Amazon. A new report is out confirming that raising the minimum wage raises workers’ paychecks and doesn’t result in fewer people working. Financial policy analyst Daniel Sankey joins the show. FBI agents yesterday raided the offices of President Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, apparently seeking any and all documents related to the payment of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels, a former pornographic film star who allegedly had a relationship with the President. Brian and John speak with Coleen Rowley, a former FBI special agent who in 2002 was named Time Magazine person of the year along with two other whistleblowers. Yesterday was Black Monday for Russian oligarchs subject to the Trump Administration’s latest sanctions, with those on the sanctions list losing $16 billion in just one day. Russian stocks tumbled on both the Moscow and Hong Kong exchanges, and the ruble fell to its lowest level against the dollar in two years. Dimitri Babich, a journalist and commentator with Sputnik International, joins the show. The Puerto Rico Department of Education announced yesterday that it would close 283 school all over the island in response to a drastic drop in enrollment following the devastation last year of Hurricane Maria. The move would save Puerto Rico $303 million, but the island is $120 billion in debt. Camilo Punsoda, spokesperson for Juventud Trabajadora, the youth wing of the Working People’s Party of Puerto Rico, joins Brian and John. One of the top leaders of Colombia’s former rebel group, the FARC, was arrested today on drug charges at the request of the United States. Jesus Santrich, a peace negotiator, is charged in a federal court in New York with drug trafficking. But the arrest may deal a death blow to the Colombian peace process. James Jordan, a member of the Alliance for Global Justice who is currently on tour with the leader of Colombia’s largest farmworkers’ union, joins the show.A federal court ruled last week that the Environmental Protection Agency violated the Civil Rights Act by delaying investigations into environmental discrimination complaints for years, and in some cases for decades, including complaints in Flint, Michigan. How can a state agency get away with extended racism for so long? Brian and John speak with Karen Monahan, a Senior Organizer with the Beyond Coal campaign for the Sierra Club in Minnesota who has provided racial equity and diversity training for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and served as the co-Chair of the Sierra Club North Star Chapter’s Diversity Council.

The war in Syria is an unparalleled crisis. Having gone far beyond an internal political struggle, the war is marked by a complex array of forces that the U.S. Empire hopes to command: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kurdistan, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and more. To simplify this web of enemies and friends in the regional war, Abby Martin interviews Dr. Vijay Prashad, professor of International Studies at Trinity College and author of several books including “The Poorer Nations", "A People’s History of the Third World” and "Arab Spring, Libyan Winter".
