One of the Christian Zionist cheerleaders for Israel has been John Hagee of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, TX. Hagee's war prayer before the second war on Iraq in 2003 showed his war-willingness to turn his back on the teachings of Jesus (see: "John Hagee with Benny Hinn: Praying for War in the Name of Jesus"). He began his career as an editor at Musical America Magazine, eventually becoming its chief critic. His radio career began in 1929, when he produced and directed The Atwater-Kent Hour, a Met Opera presentation. He soon became a valuable member of BBD&O's growing staff of radio writers & directors. In 1931 Spier went to Hollywood to direct one of the first big budget radio programs in southern California. Coming back to New York, he was one of the people responsible for the creation of The March of Time. In 1940 Spier left BBD&O & began working for CBS. He was soon their story editor. Meanwhile, CBS decided to bring Forecast back. Season two premiered on 7/14/1941, with a play from Hollywood called The Arabian Nights. It starred Marlene Dietrich & was directed by Charles Vanda. The following week Kay Thompson starred in 51 East 51 from New York. It was an on-the-scene comedy at a fictitious upscale New York bar. Her director that evening was Bill Spier. The two were soon dating, marrying in 1942. Two weeks later, Spier produced & directed a Forecast episode called Song Without End, starring Burgess Meredith & Margo. It was to be a biopic on musicians and composers. That autumn Vanda & Spier were in New York, pushing for the launch of Suspense as a CBS cost-sustained show. On Sunday 12/71941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor & Manilla, finally thrusting the US into World War II. The next Sunday, as CBS prepared for the Monday multi-network broadcast of Norman Corwin's We Hold These Truths, Bill Paley finally approved Suspense's launch as a thirteen-week summer series in 1942. Vanda got Harold Medford to come East to write. Although Bill Spier was head of CBS's New York Story Department, it was Harold Medford who polished the first seven shows. Vanda also got CBS musician Bernard Herrmann to compose the show's score. Suspense premiered on Wednesday June 17th, 1942 at 10:30PM eastern time. The first episode, “The Burning Court” was adapted from a story by John Dickson Carr. Seeking a star, Vanda chose Charlie Ruggles. Known for his comedic flair, Ruggles was in New York for the opening of his latest film, Friendly Enemies. Vanda believed that Suspense could cast against type. It came to be a show staple. Charles Vanda wound up only being in charge of the first five shows. He went into the army. The second show was the John Collier mystery “Wet Saturday,” a grim tongue-in-cheek tale of murder. The final three shows by Vanda were a take on the Lizzie Borden case, a murder story aboard a train, & a thrill kill, “Rope” that Alfred Hichcock later shot with James Stewart. With Vanda entering the service Bill Spier took over the production. Spier's first episode as producer was on 7/22/1942. On 9/2 Suspense broadcast Lucille Fletcher's “The Hitchhiker.” At the time Fletcher was married to Bernard Herrmann. “The Hitchhiker” starred Orson Welles. Welles & Spier had known each other since The March of Time. Welles just returned from Brazil where he'd been promoting greater Pan-Americanism on behalf of RKO. It was his first appearance on Suspense. When the thirteen-week summer run ended, CBS was set to cancel the series. The last episode was called, “One Hundred In the Dark.” It aired on September 30th, 1942. In the end Suspense was saved by the amount of fan mail & phone calls to CBS. Spier pushed to link the show with a prestigious mystery author. He approached the agent of John Dickson Carr, who'd written “The Burning Court,” & a deal was soon in place for him to write exclusively for the program. CBS picked up Suspense for the fall season and put it on the air Tuesdays at 9:30PM beginning 10/27. John Dietz returned as director and a foreboding narrator, “The Man In Black,” was played by Ted Osborne.
Norman Corwin was twenty-seven years old when he was hired by CBS in April of 1938. For three years he honed his craft on shows like Words Without Music, The Pursuit of Happiness, So This is Radio and Forecast. In 1941 he was tasked with taking over The Columbia Workshop for twenty-six weeks. These plays are today known as “Twenty-Six By Corwin.” They ranged from whimsy, to romance, to high drama, to coming of age tales. CBS refused to offer the series up for sponsorship. Corwin's programs weren't about revenue, they were about advancing the medium itself. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Manilla on December 7th, 1941, Corwin penned a play in honor of the 150th anniversary of The Bill of Rights. It was at the behest of President Roosevelt. The play was called “We Hold These Truths,” and broadcast on December 15th. Simultaneously heard on all four networks, sixty-million tuned in. It was at that time, the largest ratings share of any dramatic program ever. By 1944 Corwin had free rein over his productions. The Workshop essentially became branded as Columbia Presents Corwin. Corwin had previously adapted Carl Sandburg's The People, Yes three times. At 8PM over CBS on D-Day, Corwin presented the first in An American Trilogy on Carl Sandburg featuring Charles Laughton. The following two weeks he'd present part two on Thomas Wolfe and part three on Walt Whitman. Opposite, NBC broadcast a special version of the Ginny Simms show.
Imagine being part of the orbiting circle of participants who make up the constellation around the Royal Family of Great Britain. Our guest, journalist Elizabeth Nickson, gave us a glimpse of today's program. As a reporter with the London Bureau of Time, then Life Magazine, and later other major outlets, Elizabeth was assigned to get close and ultimately to get an interview with Princess Diana. This process was battle planned out over a couple of years with a chef, dining room, clothing allowance and a social secretary who had close connections with the Royal Family. Elizabeth described preparations that needed to be done to make her way into the trust and engagement with the family, including dozens of events and private affairs, culminating in being able to host a party for Princess Diana. She was also able to interview Margaret Thatcher, albeit about wardrobe and clothing, not affairs of state. From this beginning, we delved into the world of power and the encroaching evil that we see, especially in the increasing signs of the practice of the occult—most recently, the unveiling of the first official portrait of King Charles. But the more deeply that we try to identify and expose wickedness—pedophilia, the occult, the Global Predators, the more we need to be girded in faith and the protection of God. An important reminder to us all as we navigate our way through this time of world upheaval. But where is God? One of the most striking observations Elizabeth made about modern life was that she noticed that old documents always spoke of virtue, faith, and the Christian love of God. These include letters and casually written communications as well as documents of the state. So many old documents made plain the fact that God was a prominent aspect of daily life. Now, we don't see that embrace of Godliness. In contrast to the world of English royalty that Elizabeth was assigned to connect with and write about as a young journalist, Elizabeth is thoughtful and caring. In her Christmas of 2023 Substack essay, “We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident,” she said: “We stand within a massive majority, but we are facing the same evil that the American founders faced: people who want to force us into prison-cities as serfs, harvest our labor, eat our energy, and will do any foul thing they can, because if we win, they will be pursued to the gates of hell. In the face of their evil, we must be sober-minded, methodical, and implacable. And take prisoners even if it takes fifty years to prosecute them all and flush out their crimes against us. Israel's genocidal war on the Palestinians in Gaza has renewed support among Christian Zionist churches. They are holding special events to support Israel. Evangelical churches that are not overtly Christian Zionist from the pulpit are unwilling to hold prayer sessions for peace and a ceasefire in Gaza. They might be accused of supporting Hamas and upset those Christian Zionists/Super Patriots in their congregation who might be offended and cut their tithes or leave. Chris, Craig, and Tom from We Hold These Truths discuss and show examples of this phenomenon like Franklin Graham's meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu in Israel to pledge his undying support. Never mind the killing of innocent women and children in Gaza.
Regis Tremblay of Dateline News & Conversations interviewed Tom Compton of We Hold These Truths on Christian Zionism. With over 23,000 Palestinians murdered in Gaza at this point, the situation is becoming a human catastrophe there while American churches are silent, for the most part, in calling for peace and a cease-fire in Gaza. Learn why this is so in this interview. Tom met Regis in 2013 when he hosted a film showing of Regis' remarkable documentary, The Ghosts of Jeju in Phoenix, AZ. Regis describes his film: "This is my award-winning, blockbuster film about the people of Jeju Island, S. Korea who had been protesting the construction of a large naval base in the village of Gangjeong to accommodate Obama's "pivot to Asia." Now completed, it has destroyed this pristine, UNESCO-protected environment as well as the livelihoods of the farmers and fishermen who have lived there for 500 years. What I discovered was shocking! The US Government of Korea which occupied S. Korea at the end of WWII, feared a peasant uprising against this occupation and rose up against it in massive protests. Fearing a "communist" uprising, the US military organized, trained, armed, and commanded a militia of Koreans and ordered a crackdown on these unarmed peasants. From 1946-47, as many as 50,000 peasants were massacred in what was essentially a free-fire zone on the entire island.
This video was made 14 years ago when We Hold These Truths held a vigil at the Christians United For Israel (CUFI) "Night to Honor Israel" event in Phoenix, AZ. Back then attendees interviewed told us they supported the wars in the Middle East to protect Israel. Nothing has changed since then, Zionised Christians still believe that wars are necessary to protect Israel. After the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel when they broke out of the world's largest open-air prison the rhetoric has now changed to "We must eradicate the evil Hamas". Of course, there is no concern by Israeli supporters about the now over 19,000 Palestinians that have been killed by Israel's vindictive siege on Gaza. About 70% of the victims are innocent women and children. To prove their continued support for Israel, Cornerstone Church led by John Hagee held on October 22, 2023, a "Night to Honor Israel" event described in the article "A San Antonio Megachurch Plays an Outsized Role in Supporting Israel's War Efforts" in the Texas Monthly.

The brilliant stage, screen, and voice actress, Melinda Peterson, has been performing professionally for more than 40 years. She was introduced to audio theatre in 1990 when she played all 17 of the female roles in Proctor & Bergman's Power which aired on NPR as a regular segment of John Hockenberry's Heat. Since that time she has contributed voices to NPR Playhouse productions, including working with all-star casts on We Hold These Truths and Empire of the Air for Other World Media, as well as performing with the legendary Firesign Theatre on The Great Internet Broadcast for the Toyota Comedy Festival in New York. And she's traveled several times to Dublin to participate in Crazy Dog Audio productions for RTE, Ireland's public radio service. Melinda is most proud that she was Norman Corwin's very favorite Lucretia Borgia in his The Plot to Overthrow Christmas. She's also led the casts of Agatha Christie's BBC Murders playing Agatha Christie herself. Melinda has performed at regional theatres across the country and is a member of the Los Angeles' classical acting ensemble, The Antaeus Theatre Company. She lives in LA with her husband, the great Firesign Theatre writer and performer, Phil Proctor, who's also one of my favorite guests ever on StoryBeat. We Hold These Truths (broadcast date: 09/18/2022)
In 1999 We Hold These Truths republished the book Holocaust II: Saving Israel From Suicide under the title One Nation Under Israel. Dr. Vladimir Zelenko was an Orthodox Jewish MD from Monroe, NY who had successfully treated over 6,000 patients infected with Covid-19, using early treatment protocols that he developed. In this remarkable 24 min. presentation made to a Rabbinical court in Jerusalem, Dr. Zelenko tried to warn the leaders of Israel about the dangers and repercussions of the experimental, Covid-19 "vaccines". His presentation fell on deaf ears due to blinding by the WHO (World Health Organization). Sadly, Dr. Zelenko passed away from cancer on June 30, 2022 (see: Here).
Recently, the US Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade case of 1973 that allowed abortions. Now, the decision on this issue will go back to the states. Before Chuck Carlson founded We Hold These Truths in 1996, he and his wife were active in the pro-life movement. When We Hold These Truths started challenging "Christian Zionist" or War-Willing" churches in 2002, one of the earliest signs that we carried at those vigils was "Chose Life, Not War!" While evangelical church members typically oppose abortion, large numbers of them enthusiastically support the serial wars of the US for patriotic reasons. In this 2004 message, "Abortion: A Kingdom of God Approach" by Pastor Greg Boyd of Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, MN the issue of abortion is addressed that can be seen in a new light in 2022. This was the third of five messages in a series entitled "The Cross and The Sword". It was about how many Christians have welded the cross to the sword. As citizens of the United States of America, the state wheels the sword while Christians are supposed to be under the authority of Jesus Christ. As a result of this series of messages, about 20% of the 5000 congregants in Boyd's church left because they couldn't handle the message. We Hold These Truths joined with the Arizona State University chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) to observe the 74th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (Arabic for “catastrophe”) that occurred in 1948 when over 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes and over 450 of their villages were destroyed by the Zionists in their drive to establish the modern state of Israel. The Nakba continues today under the Israeli occupation designed effectively to expel or kill as many Palestinians as “legally” possible. The latest example of this was the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian Christian, by an Israeli sniper. Tom Compton of WHTT reports on the Nakba 74 rally and how millions of evangelical Christians are oblivious to the plight of the "Living Stones" in Israel.

Having experiences outside of our country and with others from different cultures allows us to see the beauty of America. It is important to remember God's word was brought here before the Declaration of Independence or the penning of the U.S. Constitution. God's word is foundational and eternal. As Americans and Christians we should recommit to these words in Declaration of Independence, ““We hold these truths to be Self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.” Ultimately, there is no way to legislate morality, or people to experience life, liberty, or happiness. If man makes a law, man can take it away. But, the gifts and grace given by God can never be taken away. That is why, “We Hold These Truths.”

In this video, our founder, Charles E. Carlson speaks about his solo walk-in visit to the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip in March 2002. There he witnessed and filmed an Israeli bombing raid from the roof of a building owned by the Southern Baptist Convention. Chuck gave this account to members of the Institute for Historical Review two years later. The video account of this bombing raid can be seen in our documentary, “The Roots of Christian Zionism: How Scofield Sowed Seeds of Apostasy”. In the second segment of this 50-minute talk, he explains Zionist Christian's distortion of the bible and why its followers support Israel despite its documented brutality toward the Palestinians. His talk marked the beginning of We Hold These Truths' nineteen-year study of and challenge to the biblical corruption that has fostered Israel's unbroken history of killings.

Out of 700 international films submitted to the 4th Ammar Popular Film Festival in Tehran, Iran, in January, 2014, our film, Christian Zionism: The Tragedy & The Turning, Part 1, has been given a special award along with two other documentaries. This film exposes what should be three, obvious truths: 1. The US has a war based economy that is dependent upon the support for its many wars by Christians under the influence of Christian Zionism. 2. Christian Zionism is a corruption of traditional Christianity that has been promoted for just over 100 years, through the Scofield Reference Bible. 3. The Palestinians have been under a brutal military occupation by Israel since 1967. An example of this brutality was an Israeli attack on Gaza that killed four and wounded 40 in 2002, that was witnessed, videoed and reported by Charles E. Carlson, the Writer/Director of this documentary. This attack was four years before Hamas came to power and 12 years before Israel's current attack on Gaza, "Operation Protective Edge." This planned operation has turned into a genocidal assault on Gaza with the Israelis bombing hospitals and schools, and civilian casualties hovering around 75%, while destroying the infrastructure of the world's largest, open air prison (Bob Simon of CBS News described Gaza this way in 2009 in an interview with Charlie Rose).

Market Closed Early for July 4th Holiday The U.S. stock market closed early today, ahead of tomorrow's Fourth of July holiday when the markets are of course closed and Americans are out celebrating Independence Day, the birth of the nation, July 4, 1776. I love the Fourth of July as a holiday; it is purely American. Framers of the Constitution Risked it All One of the problems I have with the Fourth of July is that it makes me feel both good and bad about what happened on July 4, 1776. I am honored to have been born in a nation that was conceived in liberty and I think about the sacrifices made by the people who signed their names beneath John Hancock's name to that document. These men risked it all to put their names on the Declaration of Independence, committing treason against the British government. If we had lost that war, the King would have killed our founding fathers, as traitors. The American Experience is Unique and Privileged So you think back on the accomplishments and the sacrifices that were made and the incredible republic that our founders created. I'm proud that, but at the same time, I'm sad that it has all been lost. We no longer have the nation that our founders created for us. We have lost all that it means to be an American. It used to be so special to be American, based on the type of nation that we were, and the type of individuals that Americans were; what it meant to be an American, how unique and privileged it was. The Role of Government in America And today, even though the American economy is regarded as at the top, a lot of that is a function of debt and it's all an illusion. The difference between an American and any European these days is not nearly as great as it was. If you have never read the Declaration of Independence, and I am sure most of you probably had at some point, you might want to take another look at it, and give the entire document a read. I am going to read just a part of the second paragraph, because this is the most important aspect to understand the essence of what America is supposed to be, and what the American government is supposed to do. This is important because there are all these Socialists out there who want to re-define America - Democratic Socialism. This paragraph helps you understand the role of government in America. We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident Governments can have different roles in different countries, but in America, there is a certain role that government is supposed to have. It had it for a long time, but it no longer fills that role: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —
