Experts from FDD's Nonproliferation and Biodefense Program were scheduled to attend the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) annual conference at The Hague when they learned their attendance was blocked. Iran, Syria, and/or Russia – all known rogue proliferators—managed to veto the attendance of FDD observers. What are the chemical weapons and proliferation concerns associated with each of these rogue states and North Korea? What can Washington and allied nations do to hold them to account? FDD hosted an on-the-record event to discuss the state of global nonproliferation efforts, the role each of these proliferators play individually and in coordination with each other, and recommendations for addressing these issues. The event featured keynote remarks by Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation C.S. Eliot Kang followed by a panel discussion with Michael Allen, former Special Assistant to the President and NSC Senior Director for Counterproliferation Strategy; Anthony Ruggiero, Senior Director of FDD's Nonproliferation and Biodefense Program and former Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and NSC Senior Director for Counterproliferation and Biodefense; and Andrea Stricker, FDD Research Fellow and Deputy Director of FDD's Nonproliferation and Biodefense Program. The conversation was moderated by Vivian Salama, national security reporter for The Wall Street Journal.
Since 2015, Russia’s military intervention in Syria has helped Bashar al-Assad remain in power. But as Russia suffers ongoing battlefield defeats and setbacks in Ukraine, the Kremlin has redirected its focus and resources there. On November 8, USIP hosted a Twitter Space conversation on the short- and long-term implications of Russia’s shifting role in the Syrian conflict, as well as what the geopolitical fallout from the war in Ukraine means for Syria and the Middle East. While the war in Ukraine continues to make front-page news, a historically troubled region of the world offers its usual array of intrigue and challenges to America's strategic interests. Cole Bunzel, a Hoover Institution fellow who studies the Islamic Middle East, gives an update on the latest developments in Iran (deal or no deal), Syria (Russia's presence), Israel (trouble in all directions), Saudi Arabia (chilled U.S. relations), as well as the ISIS caliphate (who's in charge?).
Hello and welcome to the final episode of War College.Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. We’re just becoming Angry Planet. From time to time we record things that, for whatever reason, don’t quite work. Sometimes the audio is bad. Sometimes the news cycle destroys the story. Sometimes the the very famous, big name podcast host you have on as a guest is clearly drunk and loses his end of the audio. Sometimes you find out the guest is a CIA agent who never set foot in the country he’s talking about and decide to scrap the episode. The following audio is almost one of those episodes, but I think it’s still worth a listen. Back in May just before Jason returned to the show I talked with the British journalist Gareth Browne about Syria, Russia, and Iran. We talked the geopolitics of the region and what’s been happening since Solemani’s death. Some of the information here is out of date, and there’s places where the audio is a little … scratchy. But I think this was a good conversation about some vital stuff and I thought it’d be nice to go out on something like this before we officially launch Angry Planet. We’re clearing the backlog, so to speak. Thanks for listening, we’ll miss War College but we know we’ll be happier as Angry Planet.Recording 5/26/20Russia’s goals in SyriaThe roots of Russia and the Assad family’s relationshipHow much of the country does Assad still control?Iran backed militias in Syria“War has changed”How the death of Qasem Soleimani changes everythingThe court politics of Russia, Syria, and IranThe legacy of Hafez al-Assad See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this segment, hosts Jacquie Luqman and Sean Blackmon are joined by Francis Boyle, Professor of International Law at the University of Illinois, to talk about the escalations between Turkey and Russia in the Idlib province of Syria, the role of the U.S. government in fomenting the violent conditions currently facing the Syrian people, the historical precedent for Turkish territorial ambitions in that country, why international law clearly comes down on the side of Syria/Russia instead of the Turkish army and their jihadi militias, possible outcomes of the planned conversation between Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin later, whether the US/Taliban 7-day reduction in violence slated to begin today represents a reason for optimism, and why US intentions in Afghanistan may actually be quite different from the those stated publicly.

With the future of Syria being decided, the foreign minister of Germany says his nation is looking to increase its military presence there. This points to a biblical prophecy of Syria being rent from Iran’s influence and joining in confederation with Germany. Russia publicized an eye-popping video of a new hypersonic interceptor missile, part of a series of impressive military developments by the Asian giant. At a high-level governmental meeting this week, Russia agreed to allow Chinese company Huawei to build Russia’s 5G broadband network, yet another sign of unprecedented cooperation between the two nations. We also talk about Germany’s fragile government continuing to fracture, the prospect of America slapping tariffs on goods from Mexico, the pope praying for European unity, and a stunning policy by the Canadian government to encourage more abortion worldwide. 1. Breakthrough for Glass-Steagall in Australia 2. Syria and Russia lies unravel; expect threats to escalate Presented by Elisa Barwick and Craig Isherwood
In this episode, I speak with Dmitry Orlov. This interview was recorded Sunday April 15, less than two days after the events discussed in this episode. The reason for the release of this episode outside of my normal release schedule, and on such short notice, is because of the nature of what is discussed in this interview with Dmitry. Dmitry and I discuss the recent missile strikes by the US military in Syria, the Trump Administration, as well as the broader US military establishment's true intentions and objectives behind the strike, as well as what other major world powers (Russia in particular) are doing in response to this attack. Dmitry presents this whole event within a broader geopolitical trend: the American Empire is fading. America's influence in the Middle East, in particular, has begun to dissipate, with Russia and other regional players aligning themselves outside of American control and influence. These nations have begun to nudge the United States out of its once dominant role on the international stage, and the response to this missile strike in Syria fits neatly within this trend. I was personally worried that this event in Syria would spark an escalation that could potentially lead to a deadly exchange of nuclear weapons between world powers. While that is still on the table, Dmitry puts much of the details of this strike within the context of broader geopolitical trends. Things are not as they appear, my friends. Dmitry is a Russian-American engineer and writer, who regular writes on subjects related to social and economic collapse, geopolitics, peak oil, Empire, and how to adapt in a time of converging crises manifesting on multiple fronts. Dmitry is the author of many books, including "The Five Stages of Collapse," "Shrinking The Technosphere," and "Everything is Going According to Plan." Paul Ryan announces his retirement from Congress. He'll serve the remainder of his term, but not seek re-election. This means a new Speaker will be selected in 2019. Democrat or Republican. The narrative is that Ryan jumped ship because Republicans are going to lose the House. Are we too jaded to think he really may just want to spend more time with his family while his kids are still home? White Sox game easily confused with a Hillary rally. Trump tweet about Syria & Russia at the conclusion of this program yesterday. The Left's ideas on how the government can save Facebook. Give me a break. Facebook police. Liability for "objectionable content." And my favorite: ethics review boards! Who thinks the government should be the arbiter of all things ethical?

Syria Bombings, Trump Caving To Deep State, Hillary and More!
The situation in Syria is dangerous and volatile, with the potential for an American conflict with Russia very real. Scott Horton helps us evaluate what the two major candidates have had to say about this critically important subject.
Brad Sullivan Proper 16, Year C August 18, 2016 Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, Bay City, TX Jeremiah 1:4-10 Luke 13:10-17 God Interrupts Us With Moments of Grace Last Sunday, we heard about Jesus saying that he came to bring division, and today, we heard about that division actually happening. Jesus was teaching in a Synagogue, and then he stopped teaching to heal a woman who came to hear him. We’re told she had been stooped over for 18 years, so it was known that this woman was almost crippled, and then with a word and a touch, Jesus turns chiropractor and heals her body so she can stand up straight and walk and move well. We hear the leader of the Synagogue then, basically telling this woman she was wrong for coming to the Synagogue and making sure no one else makes such a mistake. Rather than berate Jesus for healing her, the leader says to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.” Hey guys, don’t mess up like she did. Come back on Sunday or Monday if you need to be healed, not Saturday. It seems awful, horrible of him to say that. Of course she should be able to come to Synagogue, and of course if Jesus is there when she is there, he should be allowed to heal her. He technically “worked” on the sabbath, but so what, it’s the power of God bringing healing to the world. That’s what we think when we hear this story, but what if it were to happen here? Imagine one of our parishioners reading one of the lessons Sunday morning, and then deciding he is going to heal someone within the parish. He stops reading mid-lesson, and walks out into the congregation. He turns to one of our beloved brothers or sisters who isn’t physically able, who can’t walk well, who is stooped over, and he says to them, “In the name of Jesus, be healed,” and he touches them, and suddenly they have strength in their arms and legs. They can stand up straight and walk and move like they haven’t been able to for 30 years. What do we do at that point? “Ok, everyone, let’s sit back down for the second lesson.” Nope, that doesn’t quite work. There would be a myriad of reactions from all of us. Some would be praising God. Some would be afraid. Some would be asking to be healed too. Some probably would be wondering, “How much longer is this going to take? Can we get on with communion?” “My favorite hymn was next, come on, let’s sing.” What does the preacher do at that point? What do I say to follow up that? Are we going to stop having services here on Sunday because folks from all over are going to start coming here for healing? I can see the synagogue leader saying, “Don’t come here for healing on the sabbath.” Can you do that healing thing in the parish hall next time, maybe in between services? Hopefully we’d just allow ourselves to be there in the presence of God made manifest in the healing, but I can see where the leader reacted badly, not quite knowing what in the world to do at that point. I can see where the people would have been divided over their reactions to Jesus, some praising God, some afraid, some wanting to follow him, some wishing he’d not interrupt their comfortable service of teaching and worship ever again. God interrupts us. People interrupt us. How do we respond when we are interrupted from our comfortable worship and walk with God? I’m trying to pray here, how dare you interrupt me with you problems. We’re trying to pray here, how dare you let your children make noise. I love worship the way I like it; how dare you change something? My first Sunday here, we had a pretty big interruption as Will Scott, and I think he passed out, I don’t exactly remember what happened at this point, but there was some commotion back there. So I went back to see what was happening, and he was lying down, I think one of our nurses was back there with him, and someone had called for an ambulance, so I prayed over Will and then went back up and we continued on with the service. The paramedics arrived and we continued on, and then before they took him to the hospital, we stopped the service again and had a group prayer for Will. Then we continued on with the service again. He ended up just fine after that. We got to take this interruption and see it for what it was, a moment of grace. Those with the ability got to care for Will, the rest of us got to pray for Will, and continued to get to worship and share communion. The interruptions didn’t mess up the service. They made it more beautiful. In other times and ways in which our prayers and our worship gets interrupted, maybe the interrupters really are just being jerks, or maybe the interruptions are moments of the presence of God breaking through so that we can be taken out of our comfort and routine and brought into the grace of God. Perhaps the loud and busy child is a moment of grace, a chance for another adult to join with the parents to offer some loving support and attention to the child. The person offering support would be brought out of their usual worship and brought into the grace of communion with a young family, showing them that they and their children and beloved and belong. Perhaps the myriad distractions and interruptions we face each day are likewise moments of grace, opportunities for us to let some harrowed person know that they are worthwhile, that they are worth our time and attention. That may seem a small thing, but being worthy of someone’s time and attention is at the core of what it is to be human. God told Jeremiah, “before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” We apply that verse to all people, saying that before all of us were formed in the womb, God knew us. We are all worthy of God’s notice, of God’s time and attention. We were not made to be alone. We were not made to be discarded. We were made to be connected to each other. We were made to be worthy of each others’ notice, to be worthy of each others’ time and attention. The discarded woman in our Gospel story today was worthy of Jesus’ notice, worthy of his time and attention. People in our pews who are by themselves, who are struggling with kids are worthy of our loving and caring notice, worthy of our loving and caring time and attention. People whom we don’t like that much, or know but don’t see all that often are worthy of our notice, worthy of our time and attention. People at the bottom of our society, those often discarded, are worthy of our notice, worthy of our time and attention. The world was interrupted by one such person couple of weeks ago with the photograph of a young Syrian boy. He had survived the bombing of a building and he sat in shock in an ambulance, blank-faced, covered in dust and blood. The world began taking notice again of the innocents of Syria, remembering that these people are worthy of notice, worthy of time and attention. I don’t know that a whole lot is going to actually change, as those in control of the situation in Syria (Russia, ISIS, the Syrian government) simply don’t care enough (or at all) about the least among them, the weak and the discarded. They care about their struggles for power, not about the discarded people living and dying beneath the weight of their power. When we are annoyed by people when they interrupt us, when we disregard the least among us, when we don’t acknowledge or notice the worth of people, when we don’t give time and attention to those worthy of our time and attention, we’re not exactly bombing them and leaving them in shock, covered in dust, rubble, and blood. At the same time, like Russia, ISIS, and the Syrian government, we are still disregarding people who are worthy of our notice, worthy of our time and attention. When we’re annoyed by people when they interrupt us and don’t acknowledge their worth, we’re like the leader of the synagogue who said, “Don’t be healed today, come back tomorrow.” I don’t say this to make us feel badly about ourselves, but rather to keep us from noticing the specks in other peoples’ eyes while ignoring the logs in our own. I also bring this up because we all want to feel worthy of notice, worthy of time and attention, love and belonging. The more we give that notice, that worth to others, the more we will believe in our own worth, the more we will believe that we are worthy of notice, that we are worthy of peoples’ time and attention, their love and belonging. That’s life in Jesus’ kingdom. That’s life through the eyes and heart of Jesus. People and the myriad interruptions they bring aren’t times to be lamented. Rather, people and their myriad interruptions are moments of grace where we have the opportunity to affirm in others and in ourselves the great love of God and the great worth which we all share, being worthy of notice, worthy of time and attention, worthy of love and belonging. Amen.
The unrest and resulting civil war, that engulfed the nation of Syria has now been raging for about five years. To begin with it was unclear what would come out of the Syrian civil war, but there were certain events that seemed probable - many of us may have said, “Wouldn’t it be significant if Russia were to move into Syria”. Five years on, at least some of the results are becoming quite clear. Today Russia is in Syria. Russia is now saying that they will be withdrawing some of their forces from Syria. What this will exactly entail and when remains to be seen, but the fact is that Russia will have a much stronger presence in Syria and in the Middle East going forward. Russia’s move to pull back some of its troops came as a surprise, however it is probably a tactical pull back, the reason for which will become apparent.

This speech published on November 11, 2015 to the Federation of Republican Woman of San Diego discusses Syria, Russia, Isis, and the United States.
Diplomacy has ended the US threat of force against Syria, at least for now, but requires Bashar al-Assad to destroy his chemical weapons more quickly than ever before.
Will Russia stay in Syria? What are Putin's plans for the Middle East?

I back them up with research. A war between Israel and probably ALL of the Middle East will happen, not just bordering Arab states like Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. Israel will CONTROL the East Bank of Jordan ... also, the Arab nations of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, and others. In the last podcast we discussed how God draws Russia and Iran to attack Israel ... and WHY this battle will be different than the Battle of Armageddon. We discussed that Israel will be positioned into a force of prosperity and power: an international "sign" to the nations! You might wonder HOW ths will happen if you’ve been keeping up with the news this week. PM Olmert is acting against national interest and is positioning Israel in great danger. The Syrian foreign minister has said that PM Olmert agreed to cede the entire Golan and pull back to the pre-1967 war lines. This is land that was not only WON by the blood of Israelis ... but was PROMISED by G-d to Israelis! Olmert is NOT of sufficient mental freedom at this time, due to his own corruption scandal to negotiate anything of importance in Israel’s name ... especially a peace treaty with enemies and liars (who will never keep a treaty). Due to political realignment in Lebanon, Hizballah’s armed militia now has the right to stockpile their own weapons armory. Plus, Syria is not so much worried about Israel’s ground movements or armor. Syria is now trying to purchase missile, air and navy weapons to gain strategic superiority over Israel: Iskander-E missiles, MigG29SMT fighter-bombers and Amur-class submarines. Syria and Iran both support these two: Hizbullah and Hamas. But ... I have GOOD NEWS for you.A war between Israel and probably ALL of the Middle East will happen, not just bordering Arab states like Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. In Isaiah Chapter 11, verses 12-16 we read a description of a war that will happen BEFORE Messiah comes to earth again (the second time). The first 11 verses tell us about Messiah's return and his rule of peace on earth. Verses 12-16 cannot happen during this time because Messiah's reign is characterized by peace. Another distinctive feature of the prophecy in verses 12-16 is that the war therein described has not happened historicallyThis position of prosperity and power will be part of the "hook" in the jaw that God uses to draw the powers from the north (Russian and her allies) to wage war against Israel. Israel will "fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines (the Palestinians) to the west". In context Israel will strike against Egypt and Iraq (Assyria) and "plunder the people of the East". Israel will CONTROL these nations, and evidently, their WEALTH as a result of the plundering. Lexicographically, the "people of the East" include the Arab nations of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, and others. It is very evident here (in this passage) that Israel will CONTROL the East Bank of Jordan (Ammon, Moab, and Edom). This happened in Joshua's time and has NOT happened SINCE the days of Isaiah. This is a future prophecy that WILL happen! The extreme wealth that Israel will control will be one of the things G-d uses to draw the northern confederacy described in Ezekiel. (See the TANACH: Ezekiel 38:4-5, 39:2 and Ezekiel 38:10-12.)Notice … it is G-d that DRAWS the enemy from the north (Russia, and her allies: Iran and others. … He puts "hooks in their jaws and leads them out with their armies." Also, any of the following reasons God might use to draw the northern power(s) at this present time: Israel's present wealth (its people); Israel's scientific superiority; Israel's strategic geo-military positioning; Israel's previous victories over Islamic / Arabic factions.1. ISRAEL'S PRESENT WEALTH (ITS PEOPLE).In addition to the FUTURE WEALTH that Israel will control, as I described previously, there is also a present wealth of potential in the people of Israel. The following interview of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu by The Jerusalem Post was distributed by Netanyahu's office on or about Monday May 4th, 1998.Q: "Will there ever be another decade in which a million Jews immigrate to Israel?"A: "It is possible, and I would like to see it come from the West. Israel has just achieved the per capita income of Western Europe, and has more scientists, technicians, technologists - relative to the size of the population - than any other country. This is potentially the source of great wealth, because wealth in the 21st century will be created by conceptual products.Look at the wealthiest man in the world today, Bill Gates. Nobody can count his billions. But what we do know is how much he had 10 years ago: close to zero. [Editor’s note: now 20 years]. This is the greatest multiplication of wealth in history. And what is true of individuals is true of nations, too. Those nations will thrive that have the ability to manipulate knowledge in every field of human endeavor, and I believe that we are very fortunate to have that kind of advantage. Therefore I think that Israel could - fasten your seat belts - be a very wealthy country, and I think that as the standard of living rises, it will begin to attract Jews from the West.It already is attracting Jews from parts of Great Britain that have a lower per capita income than Israel does. I believe it will attract many Jews from South America, and many remaining Jews in Russia who are concentrated in the Moscow area, and who are doing better than they did before, but will do even better here. And I believe that we will see in the next 10 years a much larger immigration of Jews from North America.Clearly, I would like to see all that immigration motivated first and foremost by Zionist ideals. But I also know that the span of this immigration would increase significantly if Israel is transformed, as we are rapidly transforming, into a liberal, free-market economy and society."2. ISRAEL'S SCIENTIFIC SUPERIORITYIsrael has more scientists per capita than Switzerland.3. ISRAEL'S STRATEGIC GEO-MILITARY POSITIONINGWhen I was younger I enjoyed playing the game of "Risk". It is a simulated military game where each opponent utilizes military forces in different geographical confines, and then plans strategy from these bases, as well as from any new conquered positions. I learned after several games that whenever I controlled Israel I always won!Israel is located at a KEY geo-military position. Geographically, it is the land hub of Europe, the Near East, the Far East, the Middle East, and Africa. It is also the place where Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, will return to earth at His Second Appearance.4. ISRAEL'S PREVIOUS VICTORIES OVER ISLAMIC / ARABIC FACTIONSIn the 1967 "Six Day War" (when Israel was attacked) the victories were of Biblical proportions (and, over the same general enemy). By the end of the war, Israel had conquered enough territory to more than triple the size of the area it controlled, from 8,000 to 26,000 square miles. The victory enabled Israel to unify Jerusalem (See footnote 1). Israeli forces had also captured the Sinai, Golan Heights (See footnote 2), Gaza Strip (See footnote 3) and West Bank (See footnote 4).Israel now ruled more than three-quarters of a million Palestinians, most of whom were hostile to the government. Nevertheless, more than 9,000 Palestinian families were reunited in 1967. Ultimately, more than 60,000 Palestinians were allowed to return (See footnote 5).In the 1973 Yom Kippur War the Jews were attacked on their religious holy day, the Day of Atonement, while fasting. Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War (See footnote 6) in a coordinated attack that confronted the IAF with its harshest challenge to date. Denied permission for a pre-emptive strike, IAF fighters scrambled off the runways in defense of Israel's skies. They dumped their bombs into the sea ... bombs that might have been able to change the course of the war even before it began. The desperate situation on both fronts did not leave the IAF with the time required to neutralize the enemy's surface-to-air missile (SAM) threats. Indeed, the majority of the IAF's war losses occurred above the heavily defended front lines, while supporting ground forces during the first few days of fighting. Marshaling its forces, the IAF struck back at its ground-based adversary. Israeli fighters and Arab missile sites engaged in mutual bloodletting, like prize fighters slugging it out toe-to-toe.In one operation alone, the IAF lost 6 planes while destroying only one Syrian SAM. On the Western front the IAF destroyed 32 Egyptian SAM sites and damaged 11 more. Phantoms (See footnote 7) brought the war home to the Syrian capital, striking Damascus and other strategic targets. Israel fighters clawed their way toward air superiority, bombing Syrian and Egyptian airfields which, unlike in '67, were now hardened against attack. Most enemy aircraft survived these attacks but IAF fighters still destroyed more than 450 enemy planes, mostly in dogfights. In fact, the IAF's air combat (won-loss) record for 1973 was twice as good as it had been during the 1967 Six Day War (See footnote 8). As a result, the enemy had to concentrate his sorties in defense of his own backyard. Of the few enemy planes which attacked inside Israel, not one succeeded in striking and returning (See footnote 9)!ATTENTION:AGAIN … I AM NOT SAYING THIS WILL HAPPEN … BUT YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT THE BATTLE(S) DESCRIBED IN EZEKIEL CHAPTERS 38 AND 39 COULD HAPPEN RIGHT NOW … AT THIS TIME! NO OTHER PROPHECIES NEED TO BE FULFILLED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN!!COMMENTARY:After Moshe had spent many weeks in the presence of G-d, he came down to the camp and found the people worshiping the golden calf. (Torah, Exodus Chapter 32)In the Torah, Exodus Chapters 32 and 33 we read of the account when Moshe returned to the LORD in the mount to intercede for the children of Israel after they had partied and worshiped the golden calf. Then Moses went back up to be with G-d for 40 days and nights, fasting, writing upon the tables the Covenant, the Ten Commandments. During this time he interceded with G-d for four (4) things: 1. That G-d would spare the children of Israel, and not destroy them. 2. That G-d would forgive the children of Israel their sin and idolatry. 3. That G-d would go before them with His presence on their journey. 4. That G-d would allow Moses the privilege of seeing His glory. As a result of Moshe’s intercession, the LORD turned from His fierce wrath which he had determined to do to the children of Israel, and He gave Moshe a promise. The LORD said “ ... I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation ...” (Exodus 34:10). The Hebrew word here used for “marvels” is “pala.” It is a primitive root which means “miracles ... real miracles ... wonderful acts.”What Israel needs is a leader who will seek after the face of G-d: one who pays the price to know the will of G-d for Israel at each turn. A man or woman (like Deborah) that will earn the respect of the Israelis.Israel needs a selfless (SELF LESS) leader who will pray and fast to break the powers of darkness that would destroy Israel at this time. There are many end time prophecies that pertain to Israel ... I mentioned some today (Ezekiel 38 and 39, Isaiah 11:12-16); however, in any generation there are people ... called of G-d ... who are to pray, fast, and work hand-in-hand with God for the salvation of Israel.
