Dr. John Stenberg and Dr. Cameron Bearder sit down to recap their experience at the ASAP Conference 2024. The hosts recap their experience at the ASAP conference, which focuses on Chiari malformations and related conditions. They discuss the unique format of the conference, where patients can learn from top experts and ask questions. They emphasize the importance of understanding the different types of Chiari malformations and the need for clear communication when discussing these conditions. They also highlight the need for a thorough diagnosis, as Chiari malformations are a radiographic diagnosis that must be correlated with signs and symptoms. The hosts discuss the complexity of these cases, including the potential involvement of connective tissue disorders, inflammatory conditions, and genetics. They stress the importance of being aware of the interconnections between these conditions and considering co-management with other healthcare professionals. They also mention the need for further research and learning in this area. The conversation explores the philosophy of health from a functional perspective, emphasizing the importance of understanding why the body is not functioning properly. It delves into the chronic neuroinflammatory processes and how they remodel tissues, particularly in the cervical spine and lumbosacral spine. The discussion highlights the need for a methodical approach in treating patients with acquired hypermobility and managing their symptoms. The conversation also emphasizes the importance of imaging, particularly CBCT and MRI, in identifying structural abnormalities and CSF flow issues. It concludes with a discussion on CSF leaks and the various factors that can contribute to them. In this final part of the conversation, the speakers discuss various topics related to cranio-cervical instability, Chiari malformation, and scoliosis. They talk about the potential causes and symptoms of CSF leaks, the radiographic signs of CSF leaks on MRIs, and the importance of considering the entire spine and all the tissues when assessing CSF flow obstructions. They also touch on the challenges of conducting research in this field and the need for multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. The speakers emphasize the importance of being knowledgeable, humble, and collaborative in order to provide the best possible care for patients. As our Year of the Zebra focus on rare diseases continues, we're putting several neurological conditions in the spotlight whose symptoms include neck pain, vertigo, swallowing issues, memory trouble and many more: idiopathic syringomyelia; idiopathic scoliosis; and the Arnold-Chiari Syndrome type 1 caused variously by cavities in the spinal cord and brain herniation. Fortunately, our guide is one of the world's leading experts in this area, Dr. Miguel Bautista Royo-Salvador, Director of the Institut Chiari & Syringomyelia Escoliosis de Barcelona, and President of the Chiari and Scoliosis and Syringomyelia Foundation. In his fifty-plus years of focus on these conditions, Dr. Royo-Salvador has alternated between research activity and clinical practice in which he applies a treatment method he developed called the Filum System. Inventing this new approach was sparked by a patient who experienced very little improvement from what was the standard surgical treatment at the time. “I have come to the conclusion that an abnormally intense caudal traction of the entire central nervous system is the cause of the descent of the cerebellar herniation in Chiari Syndrome type 1, as well as of scoliosis and syringomyelia and others. To speak figuratively, it's like a pull from below on the whole central nervous system,” he explains to host Michael Carrese. After 2,100 procedures with a subjective improvement rate of 95%, Dr. Royo-Salvador and the Institute are working to broaden awareness of this minimally invasive approach. Tune-in for an educational journey into these rare conditions and a proven technique to relieve patient suffering.Mentioned in this episode: https://institutchiaribcn.com/

We dove deep into the wine doors spread all over Florence & Tuscany. These doors have been around for 5 centuries. And during the recent pandemic they re-opened for wine & food service. Owned by most of the noble, wealthy families of Florence, these buchette were popular by all people. Wine was drunk by all classes. Given to the sick, in moderation and mothers of newborns. Even today it is said to improve the blood. “Fa buon sangue”. Vintners, traders, and sellers were official suppliers, who had their own guild since 1288. The guild - the arte dei Vinattieri- was open not only to innkeepers and taverners, but also to anyone who sold wine for most of the year or just for one season. So many amazing stories about these very unique little doors. I hope to take my clients on a tour of them during one of my retreats in Florence. :) Hope you enjoy it! Welcome to this episode of The Underdog Vet Podcast! Sadly, this is the last episode of Season One but worry not, Season Two is already being recorded! For the final episode of Season One I have an absolute treat for you dear listener, for this season's last instalment of The Animal Advocate Interviews I spoke to veterinary neurologist Professor Clare Rusbridge. Clare graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991. After completing an Internship in America and a Residency back in the UK, she became the youngest Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in 1996 and then an RCVS Specialist in 1999. Treating animals with painful and/or distressing inherited disease drives her research to find a better way of diagnosing, treating and preventing these conditions. Clare is currently a Senior Neurologist at Wear Referrals in County Durham, a Professor in Veterinary Neurology at the University of Surrey, a Patron of the Cavalier Matters Charity and a Trustee of the Dog Breeding Reform Group charity. Clare and I had an interesting discussion about some common neurological conditions that certain dog breeds suffer and what can be done about them, including if it's even possible to eradicate them from these breeds. Clare also told me about the exciting and frankly fascinating research she's currently working on to improve dog health and welfare. Clare said A LOT of fancy words, I've explained a few here: Neotinisation: Selectively breeding dogs to retain 'cute' juvenile features in ADULT dogs, making them look more baby-like, humans find these appealing Caudal facet hypoplasia/Wobbler's Disease/Atlantoaxial subluxation: Congenital vertebral malformations (https://www.cave-vet-specialists.co.uk/veterinary-professionals/tips-from-our-experts/congenital-vertebral-malformations-in-dogs) Stop: The stop is the degree of angle change between the skull and the nasal bone near the eyes Links: Clare's website: https://veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/ Syringomyelia: https://veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/Syringomyelia/ FAQ pages of Clare's Website: https://www.veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/page60/ Pug Myelopathy: https://veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/canine-degenerative-myelopathy/ Dishevelled Gene: https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/bulldogs-screw-tails-linked-human-genetic-disease Chondrodystrophy and Chondrodysplasia: https://vgl.ucdavis.edu/test/cddy-cdpa Intervertebral Disc Disease Information: https://www.veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/spinal_disorders/Spinal_Disorder_1/ Dog Breeding Reform Group Website: https://www.dbrg.uk/ Dr Rowena Packer research on Dachshunds: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0069650 VIDEO - Symptoms of Syringomyelia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDjxvgfUVRU --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-underdog-podcast/message
Ginger and Nuts are award-winning radio presenters who burst onto the airwaves weekly with non-stop banter and unpredictability. It's no wonder they were voted 'Best Community Radio Show'.The quick-witted duo have a natural ability when putting their guests at ease and have indisputably interviewed some of the biggest names in showbiz. From the Disco Diva Gloria Gaynor, Bond Girl Britt Ekland, and boxing legend Nigel Benn to exclusives with the entire cast of ITV1s award-winning crime drama, 'The Bay. They have also had memorable chats with Sir Ken Dodd, Freddie Starr and John Challis ('Boycie' from Only Fools and Horses), who are all sadly no longer with us. With more than 30 years of radio experience between them, Ginger and Nuts have attracted support from Disney, Marvel and Empire Cinemas. Without blowing their trumpet too much, they also boast 20k fans on TikTok.Katherine said, "We were also born to be herd, so we are delighted to be joining Cotswolds Radio and hope to entertain your loyal listeners".FROM TV TO RADIODarren has previously presented slots on BBC Children In Need, alongside Alan Titchmarsh, in front of a live studio audience. More recently, he was featured on Life Stories with Piers Morgan supporting his friend, Michael Barrymore.Comedian Bob Monkhouse OBE who wrote comedy for the likes of the legendary Bob Hope, was also a fan of Darren's unique presenting style. He said: "You've got it all, Darren - energy, ideas, fluency, wit and charm. You come over the airwaves like a breezy friend and a really warm person. It's so important to be true to yourself and pour your natural personality into that microphone, and that's what you do. You have the common touch. "After listening to you, I felt I knew you and liked you."BEHIND THE MICFor 26 years, Darren worked as a PR and Marketing Guru for West Midlands Police and achieved more than 12 Commendations for his creativity. Using his cheeky charm, he enlisted the support of big names like Myleene Klass and Chris Tarrant to endorse a recruitment campaign for the Special Constabulary for free.He also produced a charity single, 'Bobby's Girl', with singer Hayley Evetts who reached the finals of Pop Stars alongside Will Young. Darren and three police officers were the backing singers providing the 'ahh-hums'. He managed to persuade comedian Joe Pasquale to add his dulcet tones to what was a fun single that not only raised funds for The John Taylor Hospice in Birmingham but also the profile of West Midlands Police. He met Katherine, who also worked for the police, and they decided to date after discussing who would bring the Black Pudding to the Christmas buffet. In case you wanted to know, Darren did - and it was a big 'un.Within a year, they hit the national headlines after pranking family and friends into thinking Darren was to star in a new movie. Needless to say, the guests turning up to the make-believe premiere were, in fact, attending their wedding at the cinema. The rest is history, as they say.MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADORSOn a more serious note, Darren's release from chronic pain, fatigue and mental health is presenting the 'Ginger and Nuts' show weekly.Behind the mic, he has been diagnosed with various long-term debilitating conditions, including Arthritis, Spine Disease, Syringomyelia (cyst on the spinal cord) and Fibromyalgia (widespread pain). He had to give up the job he loved to do due to his decline in health. He openly talks about his struggles with chronic anxiety and depression, in which he has been under a psychiatrist for more than four years. To help manage his condition, he is under a pain management specialist and is prescribed many controlled drugs such as Morphine. As well as caring for Darren during his flare-ups, Katherine has had seven miscarriages and nearly died during the last miscarriage, which landed on Father's Day a few years ago. It was heartbreaking. Earlier this year, the pair raised £503.43p for the Give a Duck Foundation.

As a child, Dr. Michelson was always coloring outside the lines, infinitely curious about how things worked, and uncommonly sensitive to the needs of others. Raised by his mother and grandmother in Philadelphia, he was exposed to spinal disorders at a young age—his grandmother suffered from Syringomyelia, a debilitating spinal deformity. The disruption of the nervous system caused by this disease allowed his grandmother’s hand, resting on a hot stove, to catch fire without her noticing. Witnessing this was a pivotal event in Dr. Michelson’s young life, where he began formulating a plan to help people afflicted with similar infirmities.Despite his modest upbringing, Dr. Michelson worked his way through Temple University and medical school at Drexel University, and following a successful surgical fellowship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, entered private practice in California as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spinal surgery. Over the next 25 years, he became world-renowned as a surgical innovator and the most prolific inventor in medical history, with over 990 patents worldwide issued to date.In the field of spinal surgery, where outcomes were unpredictable and recovery could be long and painful, Dr. Michelson’s revolutionary advancements in procedures, instruments and implants consistently led to better patient outcomes, and significantly reduced post-surgical pain, blood loss, complications and recovery time. The surgical techniques and materials developed by Dr. Michelson remain the industry standard around the world. In 2005, after selling his patents to Medtronic, the world’s largest medical device company, those proceeds, together with the resolution of related intellectual property litigation, earned Dr. Michelson a place on the Forbes 400 as a self-made billionaire. The litigation, which established new precedents in the field of patent law, later became a stimulus for Dr. Michelson to create a comprehensive textbook on the subject (The Intangible Advantage: Understanding Intellectual Property in the New Economy), which he released digitally free of charge. Later, he developed an undergraduate college course, The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Intellectual Property, which has been adopted by many colleges and universities throughout the country. This inspired Dr. Michelson to create the Michelson 20MM Foundation (formerly, Twenty Million Minds Foundation), funding the dissemination of free, peer-reviewed, openly-licensed digital textbooks for essential college general education courses. These textbooks, now in use in half of all U.S. colleges and universities, and more than 70 countries, have already saved students hundreds of millions of dollars. Among its related initiatives, 20MM also provides digital textbooks for the remedial education of individuals serving time in prison. After retiring from private practice, Dr. Michelson’s passion pivoted exclusively to philanthropy, advancing his philosophy that sharing knowledge and supporting the research of others can change the world. That same year, he made an introductory donation of $100 million to his private Michelson Medical Research Foundation (which does not accept outside donations). Among the Foundation’s other activities, the Michelson Neglected Disease Vaccine Initiative supports research for obscure and lesser-known diseases that are deemed too esoteric for conventional funding, but nonetheless affect billions of people, particularly in poorer countries throughout the world. As a medical student, Dr. Michelson was nearly expelled over his objection to removing healthy organs from living dogs in a surgical lab. His lifelong passion for animals led to a new philanthropic endeavor, the Found Animals Foundation. This Los Angeles-based animal welfare organization provides grants for the rescue and placement of shelter animals, operates adopt-and-shop centers for homeless pets, provides free microchips, subsidizes stationary and mobile low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics, and funds the $25 million Michelson Grant for the development of non-surgical sterilization for cats and dogs. Through its various programs and services, Found Animals Foundation has assisted over 1.5 million companion animals over the past 14 years. In 2014, Dr. Michelson and his wife Alya personally gifted $50 million to the University of Southern California to fund the creation of the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, bringing together the best and brightest of scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to work collaboratively on solutions to the most pressing public health issues of our time. This unique interdisciplinary research site aspires to become a model for other prominent research universities, bringing the world closer to the medical breakthroughs that will define the 21st century.Among his many awards, citations and accomplishments, Dr. Michelson is one of a handful of individuals to ever be inducted into both the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Inventors. In 2006, he was recognized as the world’s leading scientist of spinal research by the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Among a group of prominent inventors who supported the America Invents Act of 2011, Dr. Michelson was invited to the White House by President Obama to witness the signing of that historic legislation. In 2015, he was awarded both the Albert B. Sabin Humanitarian Award for his contributions toward neglected disease vaccine research, and the Distinguished Achievement Award from B’nai B’rith International for his leadership, philanthropy and humanitarian endeavors. He also received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (alongside Will Ferrel and Dame Helen Mirren), at USC’s 134th Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2017.Dr. Michelson lives in California with his wife Alya, their three children, and their two rescued dogs. They are active members of the Giving Pledge, a campaign founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, that encourages the wealthiest individuals and couples to contribute the majority of their fortune to philanthropic causes.1-2 Topics Talking Points * conversation topics you want us to discuss that are important to you.:Topics: Philanthropy and the Michelson Foundations (all three are self-funded by Gary):-Michelson Medical Foundation-20MM Foundation-Found Animals FoundationSample questions-could you give us some specific examples of what each of the foundations do, and how it might directly affect our lives?-your 20MM Foundation funds high quality, interactive, open license, freely downloadable and printable, textbooks to support higher education, and in particular the college space. In this episode we get an update on some of the cases Kim has seen in the last couple of days. We discuss wobble boards vs. wobble cushions. And we hear how well a Cockapoo with a suspected partial cruciate ligament tear is doing. We also chat about the benefits Kim sees of providing her physiotherapy and rehab services to dogs in their home environment. Some terms Kim mentions: Syringomyelia when talking about one of her Pug patients. You can find out more about this condition here. FCE: this is a fibrocartilaginous embolism. There is a blockage of the blood supply to part of the spinal cord. The result is loss of function of that part of the spinal cord. It is a problem from which dogs can recover. Cranial cruciate ligament: this is the key ligament in the knee of the dog (cat, human etc.).
Today I am talking with Lisa Grefe. Lisa is the founder of Deliver Delight. She understands that sometimes flowers just don’t cut it. Deliver Delight was born out of a small and simple idea from her own experience healing and recovering from brain surgery. Diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia, a rare neurological condition, brain surgery was her only option to live a better quality of life. Overtime, the small gifts, notes, and support meant the world to her and have inspired her first product, Deliver Delight.
In this podcast we bring you a research updatewith Dr. Simon Platt of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Platt received his veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1992, he completed a residency in neurology and neurosurgery in 1998 at the University of Florida, and afterward spent two years as an assistant professor of Neurology at the University of Georgia. In 2000, Dr. Platt returned to the UK where he was Head of the Neurology/Neurosurgery service at the Animal Health Trust until 2006. Since then he has been an associate professor and then professor in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia. Dr. Platt discusses his CHF-funded research on Syringomyelia, or SM for short, entitled “Syringomyelia in the Brussels Griffon: magnetic resonance imaging finding, clinicopathology and prevalence.” This podcast was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust.
Syringomyelia is a serious inherited disease which affects the nervous system of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in particular. In her 2nd foray into podcasting, Dr Kate Chandler explains what to look for and what to do about it if you suspect you have a case.
