Send us a textWoHos!Welp. This week we looked at two films, all right. Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION.CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION.Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess.STOPMOTION has some wonderful stop motion sequences which may be worth the price of admission, but even with its short run time, it overstays its welcome. This was a fun conversation about two repellent films.Next time we are covering two films that deal with class warfare: READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM. O czym traktuje brytyjski horror „Stopmotion” (2023)? For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham & Cody Dericks to review and discuss the American remake of the 2022 Danish film "Speak No Evil," also titled "Speak No Evil" starring James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, Kris Hichen & Motaz Mulhees. Written and directed by James Watkins, this Blumhouse-produced remake is highly similar to the original film until its finale. What did we think of it? How do the two films compare? What did we think of the performances? Will horror fans enjoy this or be let down by its blow-burn pacing? Tune in as we discuss these elements and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. On this week's show, Megan and Dave watched SPEAK NO EVIL (2:29), writer-director James Watkins' remake of the Danish film from 2022. As with many non-American horror films remade for American audiences, the new SPEAK NO EVIL leaves the original's first two-thirds relatively unchanged and then kicks the last third in the ass, replacing it with a watered down ending that, while not entirely stupid, ain't exactly aces. (That being said, the Danish original is extreme. Take a listen to our reactions to it here.) So while we weren't enamored of this new version, we think leads Mackenzie Davis and James McAvoy (at 100 percent) do excellent work, and the changes do have a few good moments sprinkled in. (And Megan likes Aisling Franciosi's performance, too.) Then we talk about SEEKING MAVIS BEACON, a documentary by director Jazmin Jones about her attempts, along with producer Olivia McKayla Ross, to find Renée L'Esperance, the Haitian (and original) model for the software program Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. We had varied reactions, with Dave being more forgiving (!!) than Megan and Evan, who feel the film is dragged down by its pacing and all the problems that can come with uneven editing. Over on Patreon, we watched another movie that has a big twist: PRIMAL FEAR with Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Edward Norton. It was a first-time watch for Evan, and we have fun talking about how the ending and wheether it holds up 28 years later.

Speak No Evil In this US Blumhouse remake of Speak No Evil, (a blisteringly fast-turnaround of the Danish original film from 2022 of the same name) James McAvoy, Aisling Franciosi, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy learn the true meaning of making new friends as an adult: abject horror. Parenting, social niceties, politeness and vicious murder and death all play their part in this extremely well thought out "Elevated Horror". the real question comes in when we explore how necessary it might be, given the original came out barely 2 years prior and was also mostly in english. Dion and Peta are out this week, so Jill and Quinny are going though the horror show together. Errata: in the podcast Quinny regularly says the other version of the film is Dutch. it is not, it is Danish, and it was released in 2022, not 2023. We apologize for the mistake. Ella Blake is a stop-motion animator who is struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother. Suddenly alone in the world, she embarks upon the creation of a macabre new puppet film, which soon becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her animated film take on a terrifying life of their own, and the unleashed power of her imagination threatens to destroy her. Anchored by a standout performance featuring actress Aisling Franciosi, the film is about a young stop-motion animator who is driven to the edge of sanity by her own creations. STOPMOTION also features Morgan's captivating yet frightening stop-motion animation, which heightens Aisling's performance of a grieving daughter who must grapple with her own demons. Director Robert Morgan (The Vandal, To Dust) joins us to talk about his background as an artist, his love of stop motion filmmaking and horror, working with a superb cast that includes Aisling Franciosi, Stella Gonet and newcomer Caolinn Springall, and his collaboration with co-writer Robin King.

Ever been on a bad ocean cruise? I guarantee it wasn't as bad as the voyage in The Last Voyage of The Demeter. You may have heard of the Demeter briefly in other Dracula movies but this movie gives you the full story. The Demeter is the ship that transported Dracula from Romania to England according to Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. In that novel, there is a small section containing the captain's log from the Demeter, telling a story of an evil killing his crew. This movie takes that small section and turns into a 2 hour movie. Corey Hawkins, from Straight Outta Compton and The Walking Dead, plays Dr. Clemens who joins the crew under Captain Eliot, played by Liam Cunningham from Game Of Thrones. Further and further into the voyage, more and more creatures are found dead with bite marks and soon the crew start becoming victims of Dracula. The doctor have to try to fight off the evil might of Dracula with the help of a girl from a Transylvanian village Dracula was keeping as a food source. Is this movie worth saving from the sleep of the undead or should you just put a stake in it's heart? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. This also stars David Dastmalchian, Aisling Franciosi, Chris Walley, Stefan Kapicic, Jon Jon Briones, Woody Norman, Javier Botet, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Graham Turner, Andy Murray, Nicolo Pasetti. "God's Creatures" is the first time filmmakers and frequent collaborators Sales Davis and Anna Rose Holmer share directorial credit on a film. Following their previous film, "The Fits," the duo are one of the most exciting pairs working in the field today, and that continues with this psychological drama that premiered earlier this year at Cannes. Davis and Rose Holmer were kind enough to talk with us about directing the three main performances from Emily Watson, Paul Mescal, and Aisling Franciosi, how much of a vital role sound plays in the film, and what they have coming up next. We hope you will check out the film, which is now playing in theaters and available on demand from A24. Please take a listen down below. Thank you! Earlier this week, Ian had the opportunity to join a critics round table for the new movie, Home.Writer/director Franka Potente and stars Kathy Bates and Aisling Franciosi spoke about their captivating indie drama, in which Marvin (Jake McLaughlin) returns home from prison after 17 years to find an ailing mother (Bates) and a town that despises him--including Delta (Franciosi), whom he discovers has a surprising connection to his crime. This spoiler-lite interview covers the origins of Home (Potente's feature-directorial/writing debut); the cast's methods for creating realistically damaged characters; and how the creators supported each other during filming (even when that support included going full-on "method").Home is now playing in select theatres and is available On Demand from Gravitas Ventures. Ian and David Fowlie of Keeping it Reel look at one of the year's best films, Franka Potente's Home.Potente (star of Run Lola Run and The Bourne Identity) makes her feature-writing/directing debut with the story of Marvin (Jake McLaughlin), who returns home from prison after 17 years. He finds an ailing mother (Kathy Bates) and a town that despises him--including Delta (Aisling Franciosi), whom he discovers has a surprising connection to his crime. In this spoiler-lite review, the guys discuss the many ways in which Potente avoids the narrative pitfalls of similar movies; what Home gets right about its themes of masculinity, religion, and forgiveness; and the one scene that feels slightly out-of-place--but which neither critic would actually want to change.Home is now playing in select theatres and is available On Demand from Gravitas Ventures.Show Links:Watch the Home trailer.Watch Ian participate in a Home round table interview with writer/director Franka Potente and stars Kathy Bates and Aisling Franciosi!Follow David's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Three and done!We have 2 perfect short binges this week, a true-crime drama, Des, and a remake of a classic film from a classic novel, Black Narcissus. Both are intense dramas with strong performances, dark humor touches.Des - A friendly serial killerNow playing on AMC+ with Prime or Sundance Now with Prime, Des is a three-part true story based on the book Killing for Company by Brian Masters. It stars David Tennet, Daniel Mays, and Jason Watkins. In 1983 Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen is arrested after the discovery of human remains that were blocking a drain near his London home. Ironically, the plumbing complaints came from Nilsen himself! (and other tenants.) Upon opening a drain cover at the side of the house, the plumber discovered the drain was packed with a flesh-like substance and numerous small bones of unknown origin. Once the police determined the "flesh-like" substance was, in fact, human flesh, and the little bones were, in fact, human bones, the police questioned Dennis Nilson, who nonchalantly confessed. Chameleon actor David Tennant is chilling and kinda funny as the matter-of-fact Nilson. Nilson was one of the most infamous serial killers in UK history. known as the ‘kindly killer.' A former cop who spent 5 years murdering young men he met on the streets of Soho from 1978 to 1983. His victims were often homeless or drug-addicted and often grateful for this stranger's apparent generosity. Nilsen had murdered a total of fifteen men over a period of five years, making him Britain's most prolific serial killer of the time. DCI Peter Jay, a homicide detective, is played by Daniel Mays, who is becoming one of our favs. Keep an eye on Daniel Mays; we think he's about to break out!Black NarcissusCurrently showing (free) on the FX site and available on FX and HULU, Black Narcissus is a 3 part series with a long pedigree. The source material is the controversial 1939 novel by Rumer Godden and adapted by British TV writer Amanda Coe. The new version also sits in the shadow of the classic version by Michael Powell and starring Deborah Kerr, Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron, David Farrar, Sabu, and a very young Jean SimmonsThe new version is more explicit than the 1947 film but sticks close to the original. It stars Gemma Arterton, Alessandro Nivola, Aisling Franciosi, Jim Broadbent and Diana Rigg in her final TV role. Travis likes the limited series better. Elaine prefers the film. Murder! This week we're joined by writer-director Rian Johnson who tells us about his new whodunnit Knives Out, and we discuss the controversial revenge thriller The Nightingale.Knives Out is an entertaining old-school murder mystery, boasting an incredible cast including Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans and Don Johnson amongst many others. The Nightingale is director Jennifer Kent's follow-up to her acclaimed horror The Babadook, starring Aisling Franciosi as a young Irish prisoner in colonial Australia in pursuit of the British solider (Sam Claflin) who committed a terrible act of violence against her and her family. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Aisling Franciosi stars in "The Nightingale," which is the summer's bravest drama or toughest watch depending whom you ask. It could be both, which is fitting of Franciosi's character, Clare, a very complicated woman out for justice against British Army officers in 1825 Australia. In this interview with Chance Solem-Pfeifer, Franciosi discusses how 'Nightingale' director Jennifer Kent would push her actors on set (and get pushed back, sometimes literally). Plus, a quick story about the day Franciosi got the call to play Lyanna Stark despite knowing nothing about "Game of Thrones." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
Known for her incredible, award winning performance as Katie Benedetto, in The Fall, Aisling talks about her, "lucky" career. It's the type of lucky that usually accompanies major talent and Aisling is a major talent. She's also delightfully humble.
