Allan Misner is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer, a Precision Nutrition Level II Master Health Coach, and a Functional Aging Institute (FAI) Certified Functional Aging Specialist who helps people over 40 lose weight and get fit so they can live the life they were meant to have.  Allan has his own story of personal transformation when he had a wake-up call just before his 39th birthday. A former athlete, he let himself go as work stress, a toxic relationship, and poor health choices left him out of shape and overweight. At that moment he decided to make a change, improve his lifestyle, and regain his fitness. It wasn't easy, but eventually he reclaimed his health, fitness, and well-being, and now he is on a mission to help others do the same. He is also the host of the 40+ Fitness Podcast, and author of the award-winning book titled “The Wellness Roadmap: A Straightforward Guide to Health and Fitness After 40,” and owner of the 40+ Fitness Online Personal Training. Allan shares his personal story of transformation, including how he spent eight years riding the roller coaster and countless waves of success and failure, which made him realize that simply making that decision wasn't enough. So, one day, while lying on the bed of a hotel room, hungover and overweight again, he made a commitment to his health and well-being. It was the shift in his thinking which changed his life. He used the same focus and dedication he used in his professional life, and over the next eleven months he lost sixty-six pounds of fat, gained eleven pounds of muscle, and completed a Tough Mudder with his twenty-year-old daughter. Allan shares many important insights, life lessons, and valuable insights on how each and every one of us can achieve our health and fitness goals by shifting our mindset, taking small steps, and moving forward. He emphasizes that we all have a responsibility to ourselves and the people we love to be the best version of ourselves that we possibly can be.     Download this positive, motivating, and informative episode and discover how you can make your mindset your superpower and get fit for life! https://40plusfitness.com/ https://www.facebook.com/allan.misner.CPT https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3hTAx0L62wT6JL04aQWu6Q https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachallan/ https://twitter.com/40plusFitnessP

They discuss the evolution of fitness training for people over 40 and the importance of personalized approaches. Allan shares his journey, highlighting how his personal transformation led him to become a personal trainer to understand his own fitness needs. He recounts losing 66 pounds through a combination of paleo, keto, and intermittent fasting, and realizing that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work in fitness. Allan explains how he initially believed in heavy lifting and low-carb diets for everyone but learned the importance of tailoring fitness plans to individual needs, using the example of his first online client who struggled with simple activities. They discuss the importance of starting small and progressing gradually, emphasizing that everyone's fitness journey is unique. The conversation shifts to the concept of using different "vehicles" (sports car, pickup truck, minivan) as metaphors for the pace and style of one's fitness journey, depending on life circumstances. They stress that progress, regardless of speed, is valuable and that life itself is the journey, not an obstacle. Brad and Allan also touch on the importance of journaling to track progress, recognizing and celebrating small victories, and maintaining a positive mindset. They highlight that maintaining fitness sometimes means adapting to new realities and that it's okay to set new, realistic goals based on current capabilities. In conclusion, Allan shares how listeners can connect with him through his podcast, book, and website, emphasizing continuous learning and adaptation in fitness. Allan discusses the common issue of people waiting for a specific day to start their fitness journey, often resulting in a lack of sustained motivation. He explains that true motivation comes from taking action first, rather than waiting for a magical moment. Allan introduces a four-quadrant model for building motivation: Accountability: Divided into two parts: Leader Level: Involves hiring a coach or having a boss who sets expectations and checks in on progress. Social Level: Involves joining groups or classes where social interactions and mutual accountability help maintain motivation. Self-Efficacy: Also divided into two parts: Leader Level: Focuses on self-management strategies like preparing gym bags or meal planning to eliminate excuses and ensure consistency. Values and Habits: The most powerful quadrant, where actions align with one's identity and values. This includes adopting habits and seeing oneself as a runner, healthy eater, or other roles aligned with fitness goals. Allan emphasizes that each quadrant requires proactive steps to build lasting motivation. Coaches and social groups provide external accountability, while self-management and ingrained habits foster internal motivation. Together, these strategies create a sustainable approach to fitness and health. Are you in the habit of “starting over” when it comes to losing weight?   Most of us pair an ideal number on the scale with an end date on the calendar when trying to lose weight. And then radically alter our diet and exercise routines in a full sprint towards the goal.    If we fail, we feel depressed, defeated and convinced that we either have no willpower OR a faulty metabolism (and probably both).   If we succeed, the victory feels heroic. We buy the flattering outfit, humbly accept the compliments and share the highlights of our transformation with jealous friends.    But either way, within a few months, our body returns to its enigmatic “set point” weight. And we get tired of swimming against the tide.    Allan Misner is the host of the top-ranking podcast, 40+ Fitness and author of The Wellness Roadmap. Picture this: you're on the volleyball court, and suddenly, your body doesn't cooperate. That's exactly what happened to Allan Misner, and it was his wake-up call to regain control of his fitness journey. Join us as we sit down with Allan, who bravely shares his story of transformation, proving that age is just a number when it comes to reclaiming your health. We delve into the mental and physical resilience it takes to prioritize fitness, illustrating that the journey towards wellness is as much about mindset as it is about muscle. We've all seen it, someone we love losing their spark as they age, their independence slipping away as health takes a backseat. Just before his 39th birthday, Allan Misner had a wake up call. While vacationing at a tropical resort, he tried to play volleyball, but got too tired to stay in the game. Once an athlete, he had let himself go as work stress, a toxic relationship and, frankly, poor health choices had gotten him to well over 250 pounds. As he sat on the beach, the water lapping at his feet, he realized he needed to make a change and decided to improve his lifestyle and reclaim his fitness. Over the next eight years, he rode countless waves of wellness and fatness. It was this rollercoaster ride that made him realize that a decision wasn't enough. So, one day, while lying on the bed of a hotel room, hung-over and fat again, he made a commitment to his health and well-being. Embark on a journey of 40 Plus Fitness with myself and Allan Misner. Allan is the host of the 40 Plus Fitness Podcast and author of his new book, The Wellness Roadmap: A Straightforward Guide to Health and Fitness after 40. If you take nothing else from this podcast, memorize this quote from Allan: “You are in control of you.” Did you know that there are more people who die each year from accidental falls than guns? Wow. I left this interview inspired to add a few new habits in my life that require no extra grit, self-discipline, or time. These simple habits might save my life as I age. Putting on my socks: When I put on my socks in the morning, I’ll do this standing up. This will give me a daily moment of balance practice. TV Time to Balance: When I watch TV, I’ll take the first few minutes to stand and practice balancing. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. I’ll simply stand on one foot and then the other. Lengthen my walking stride: Allan has noticed that as we age our strides very slowly get shorter and shorter. I will remind myself to lengthen my walking stride just a little bit. If you are also inspired to try out any of these habits above, send me an email at lyn@couchtoactive.com. We can be sock buddies! Ha. Allan tells his story about how striving to perform in his corporate job turned him into a fat bastard and how he broke free and regained his fitness. But what Allan normally doesn’t share is his personal story about the give advice he would give to his younger self. The advice was to quit drinking. It was his decision to shift his focus to his health that in turn resulted in finding a fulfilled life. This inspired me to give myself a 6-week alcohol-free challenge. I want to see if completely cutting out alcohol for 6 weeks will help improve the chronic illnesses I struggle with. My guess is it will. My challenge is starting today and going through St. Patty’s Day. If you would like to also join me in the 6-weeks of no drinking, let me know at lyn@couchtoactive.com. If you are reading this after this challenge is past and you’d still like to try your own 6-week challenge, email me and let me know anyhow. I want to know how it’s going for you and what you experience. Let’s wish each other luck! Allan Misner has created a special page on his website for us. Check out his webpage below. Just before his 39th birthday, Allan Misner had a wakeup call. While vacationing at a tropical resort, he tried to play volleyball, but got too tired to stay in the game. Once an athlete, he had let himself go as work stress, a toxic relationship and, frankly, poor health choices had gotten him to well over 250 pounds – a situation that may seem far too familiar to many of us.   As Allan sat on the beach, the water lapping at his feet, he realized he needed to make a change and decided to improve his lifestyle and reclaim his fitness.   Over the next eight years, he rode countless waves of wellness and fatness. It was this rollercoaster ride that made him realize that a decision wasn't enough. So, one day, while lying on the bed of a hotel room, hung-over and fat again, he made a commitment to his health and well-being.   Today, Allan Misner is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer and a Functional Aging Institute (FAI) Certified Functional Aging Specialist, the creator of the thriving 40+ Fitness Community, and the host of the 40+ Fitness Podcast.   Allan is also the author of a new book chronicling the path to transforming your health, https://40plusfitnesspodcast.com/rebel/ (The Wellness Roadmap: A Straightforward Guide to Health and Fitness After 40).   You're not alone.   If this story sounds familiar to you, know that you're not alone. I've been there, and so many other people are struggling as well:   76% of the workforce say they are "struggling" or "suffering" in their physical wellbeing 39.8% of U.S. adults aged 20 and over have obesity, including 7.6% with severe obesity, and another 31.8% are classified as overweight 12.2% of US adults have diabetes   You're not alone, and you don't have to feel stuck anymore.   What is The Wellness Roadmap?   This book is not the weight loss equivalent of get rich quick. It is not biohacking, not a diet book, and not a workout book.   The Wellness Roadmap is about building a healthy lifestyle through patience, persistence, and progression. You can think of this it as a Wellness GPS for anyone over the age of 40 who wants to be happier, healthier, and more fit.   Why did Allan write the book?   “I want readers to understand that wellness is not just weight loss, or a particular look. Wellness is about being the happiest, healthiest, most fit person you can be. You don't get that with restrictive diets or extreme workouts.”   Make a better resolution.   As we head into the New Year and you start thinking about your resolution to get healthy in 2019 – which is quite possibly not your first time making this resolution – I highly recommend grabbing a copy of the book to help you succeed this time around, instead of becoming one of the nearly 92% of people that fail!   You can learn more about Allan's book, community, and training at https://40plusfitnesspodcast.com/rebel.     --   Resources: Learn more at https://40plusfitnesspodcast.com/rebe   Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Personal training clients don't tell you everything. But if they could, this podcast might describe it best. Allan Misner was your client. At one time he topped the scales at 250. He'd tried and failed many times. Today, he is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer and a Functional Aging Institute (FAI) Certified Functional Aging Specialist. He is the creator of the thriving 40+ Fitness Community, providing one-on-one and group fitness coaching, nutritional guidance, and personal training for clients over the age of 40. I asked Allan for insight only someone who has been that client and now creates solutions for them could know. Insights from this episode: Know that: Anyone asking for help is being incredibly vulnerable and you want to respect that. You haven't heard it before from that client even if you've heard it before. Learn their language and use it. If they use slang, you use slang. If they're more proper, you be more proper. Your personal training clients are each different. You may have a method but it only works if you can relate to them. Be able to justify every exercise that you recommend. You should have  a reason why they do every move that is tied to their ultimate goal. Why are you having them sit or stand? Why are you having them do it on a machine or using free weights? Why standing on an unstable surface? Get them in an area where they are comfortable. When they're feeling vulnerable they aren't feeling safe with you. Who wants to return to a place they don't feel safe over and over again? Your personal training clients give you their trust, for a short time, and you can earn it for longer.  Explain why they're doing the things they're doing. They (as well as you) need to know. When they can connect the dots between where they are and where they want to go and the steps you're giving them being the solution to closing the gap your personal training clients will keep coming back and stay motivated.  Be interested AND interesting. Show interest in them. You are a part of their lives. For you it may seem like one of dozens of clients. But for them you are their only personal trainer. They want a connection with you that feels like a friend or family. It's possible to do that without breaching professional boundaries. “Conversational is the new professional.” Be one of the five people they most want in their lives. Be one of them that lifts them up. In your personal training clients lives you are in a unique place of influence. Where else can you leave every single customer feeling better when they walk out the door than when they walk in. Have fun. When you're having fun your personal training clients have fun. That's something we all want to rinse and repeat. Not-your-average-wellness-guru, Allan Misner’s journey to health and fitness has been more like the journey the rest of us have taken; an everyman journey. Athletic in his 20s and fit through his early 30s, by 37 Alan was obese, with over 40% body fat. That sparked his desire to regain the fitness of his youth. But it was a rocky road of fluctuating weight and unsustainable results that left him dissatisfied. The tide turned when Alan decided to invest in his health the way he invested in his retirement. He became an NASM-certified personal trainer, eventually adding the fitness nutrition specialty and the corrective exercise specialty to his credentials. His education is an ongoing adventure, comprised of reading, listening, and learning. Alan also invests in multiple gym memberships and buys high quality food because, he says, “Your body is constantly working to rebuild itself and make it ready for the next challenge. I believe if you workout and provide good food to your body, it will get better. So far, my investment is showing a great return. Considering the cost of being ill in old age, the biggest payoff is yet to come.” Alan founded the 40+ Fitness podcast to educate, encourage and entertain his clients and followers. By talking to experts and sorting through the science of fitness, Alan provides the knowledge to be successful in your health and fitness journey and the encouragement to stay your course, as he continues to do himself!
