Hosted by Matthew Teutsch, a scholar of African American literature and Director of the Lillian E. Together, they engage in deep conversations about civil rights, the power of rhetoric, and the ongoing struggle for social justice in the American South and beyond. By examining the "interminable" nature of systemic oppression, the Teutsches challenge listeners to embrace the responsibility of resistance through education and empathy. "The Expedition of Hernando de Soto" was written by his companion Luis Hernandez de Biedma. "When we arrived, the queen sent us one of her nieces, in a litter carried by Indians. She sent the governor a present of a necklace of beads, canoes to cross the river with, and gave us half the village to lodge in. The governor opened a large temple built in the woods, in which was buried the chiefs of the country, and took from it a quantity of pearls, amounting to six or seven arrobes, which were spoiled by being buried in the ground. We dug up two Spanish axes, a chaplet of wild olive seed, and some small beads, resembling those we had brought from Spain for the purpose of trading with the Indians. We conjectured they had obtained these things by trading with the companions of Vasquez de Ayllon. The Indians told us the sea was only about thirty leagues distant." This week in Louisiana history. Dorothy Day wrote the article, “Florence Is a Communist.”     “Do you know what Communism is, Florence?”    “Yes, I am a Communist,” Florence stated, and afterward when we were alone together in the kitchen she went into more details about her beliefs.     “Communism,” she stated, “is to help the poor.” So the poor of the small town of Jacobi where she came from, were quite ready to be enrolled in the ranks of the Communists.     There were about eighty Negroes signed up with the Communist group in her little town in Louisiana, and in the neighboring towns of Lettsworth, Lagonia, Batchelor, Torras and Susport there were groups of from forty to sixty in each town.     They were not doing anything much at present, not even meeting, she explained, since the young Communist organizer who had been keeping contact with them had been jailed and run out of town. He had been transferred by the Party to another state, so there the matter was halted. This week in Louisiana history. January 23, 1680. Most financial advisors would love to work with likeminded people with similar beliefs and worldviews to their own, but are wary of being too outspoken or transparent online so as to not alienate potential clients or lose business. Our guests, Zach Teutsch, Founder and Managing Partner of Values Added Financial, and Tim Caban, EA, CFP®, Founder and President of Copper Beech Advisors, have both built successful financial advisory practices by being open about their political beliefs and worldviews on social and digital media, attracting right-fit clients while discouraging those that are less compatible. In this episode exploring differing perspectives, guest hosted by Marie Swift of Impact Communications, we discuss how this strategy works in practice, how it can shape an advisor's client base, and what it means for trust and long-term relationships. Instead of fixating solely on net worth, Zach helps high earners and tech professionals reframe their relationship with money, starting with life satisfaction and working backwards from there. They dive into the core questions that drive meaningful financial management, from how to balance ambition and family, to navigating equity compensation, sabbaticals, early-stage investing, and building a diversified “life portfolio.” Zach also shares tactical frameworks for spiky income years, Roth conversions, QSBS tax planning, and setting up estate plans that reflect your real priorities.Whether you're in tech, product leadership, or just rethinking how you manage money, this conversation will shift how you think about personal finance—from accumulation to alignment. All episodes of the podcast are also available on Spotify, Apple and YouTube.New to the pod? In 2020, the Almeda Fire ripped through Jackson County, destroying homes and ecosystems. The “Think Out Loud” team traveled to Southern Oregon recently and talked to residents about how they’re thinking about fire in their communities now. Mountain View Estates, a manufactured home park in Talent, was destroyed by the Almeda Fire. Now, it’s a nationally recognized Firewise Neighborhood. Steve Thorpe lives there. Tucker Teutsch is the executive director of the Firebrand Resiliency Collective. It supports long-term natural disaster preparedness, recovery and resilience. Teutsch led us on a tour around Thorpe’s home, which is prepared to withstand ember attacks. Teutsch also took the team around his own property, which needs a lot more work to be prepared for wildfires. About four miles north of Talent, the team also spoke to Glenn Hill in Phoenix. He’s lived in the Rogue Valley for decades. Hill has triad asthma and the condition is affected by smoke. He told us more about living with both.

580. Part 1 of our interview with Matthew Teutsch about his article, "Blood in the Pool: The 1868 Bossier Massacre."  "Violent, racist attacks didn't just occur in Bossier. They occurred across the Red River in Caddo Parish and all throughout the Red River Valley. Gilles Vandal notes that during Reconstruction 45% of the murders in Louisiana were concentrated in the northwestern part of the state. Caddo accounted for 16% of the homicides even though it only accounted for 3% of the state's population. People may have tried to cleanse the soil of the blood, but the blood remains deep within the earth." "Matthew Teutsch is the Director of the Lillian E. Smith Center at Piedmont College. He maintains Interminable Rambling, a blog on literature, culture, and pedagogy,  and has published articles and book reviews in various venues including Lear, Melus, Mississippi Quarterly, African American Review and Callaloo. His research focus is African American, Southern, and Nineteenth Century American literature. He is the editor of Rediscovering Frank Yerby: Critical Essays (UPM 2020), and his current project examines Christopher Priest's run on Black Panther. Follow him on Twitter at @SilasLapham." Beginning in August 1946, stateless and visaless Jews, most of them survivors of the Nazi death camps, who sought to immigrate to the Land of Israel were intercepted by the Royal Navy and deported to the nearby island of Cyprus, where they were detained in camps surrounded by barbed wire. Despite occupying a dramatic and fateful position in modern history, this saga has remained largely inaccessible due to the widespread dispersal of the primary sources and the linguistic difficulties presented by them.  To address these problems, Yitzhak Teutsch's book The Cyprus Detention Camps: The Essential Research Guide (Cambridge Scholars, 2019) scrutinizes the scholarly literature, consulting hundreds of primary sources, many of them previously unknown, on three continents, bringing together interviews with scores of eyewitnesses, and translating foreign-language terms into English. The result is a comprehensive, meticulously footnoted guide that uses such tools as maps, a detailed timeline, and biographical entries to make this riveting saga accessible to a broad audience of scholars and general readers.
