In today's episode I share some current wonders and ponders regarding what it really means to be unconventional. The opposite is conventional, which means based on, or in accordance with, what is generally done or believed. Normal. Regular. Ordinary. What if that's not what we really desire? Or what we really are, deep down? What if we're more wired to be deviants? That means departing from an established course or accepted standard. The book I mention in this episode is "The Economics of Higher Purpose" by Robert E. Quinn and Anjan V. Thakor. I also mention the Enlightened Leadership Lab (www.enlightenedleadershiplab.com) and Purple Dialogue (www.purpledialogue.com).

The Good Life Coach
Manisha Thakor: Author of MoneyZen Discusses How Financial Wealth + Emotional Wealth = Happiness

The Good Life Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 2, 2023 56:58

“Do you recall that famous study which stated that once a person hits an annual income of $75,000, any earnings above that have no bearing on life satisfaction? Well it turns out that number is wrong — but likely not for the reason you think. A brand new study has found that, yes, making more money can lead to greater life satisfaction. But here's the kicker: It only works if you already possess emotional well-being. Put another way, increased “financial wealth” doesn't lead to increased happiness if you don't already have a solid foundation of “emotional wealth.” So how do we solve this money-happiness paradox and learn to build that essential base layer of “emotional wealth”? Enter: Harvard MBA and financial wellbeing guru, Manisha Thakor. In her forthcoming book, MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your “Enough”, Manisha shares her candid journey out of the Cult of Never Enough—a painful mindset that tells you the money you earn, accomplishments you achieve, and praise you receive is never enough. Being trapped on the hamster wheel of Hustle Culture for virtually her entire adult life nearly destroyed Manisha's relationships, health, and sense of self-worth. So she set out to understand why so many of us develop toxic relationships around work, money, and success at the expense of our emotional well-being and, crucially, how to flip this mental script. Manisha wrote MoneyZen to share the powerful blueprint she developed on that journey—one that can be used by anyone irrespective of age, income, or profession—to stop surviving as a human doing and start thriving as a human being. Woven throughout the book are inspiring stories of individuals from all walks of life, sharing their own unique experiences escaping the Cult of Never Enough. Interviews with a wide range of experts, from wealth psychologists and workaholism researchers, to career coaches, economists, and even evolutionary biologists, provide readers with insights on the role that personal, cultural, societal, and physiological factors play in a Never Enough mindset.” While on the show notes page, I'd love for you to join our newsletter. You'll receive more inspiration and tips to love yourself and live your best midlife. You'll also get a FREE copy of Michele's Book, Design a Life You Love (available for a limited time).   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why your net worth doesn't = your self worth. How Manisha got caught up in the culture of never enough and how she managed to finally get out. How her little “T” traumas from childhood set the stage for not feeling good enough and created a desire to be financially free. Why she ended in the hospital twice and how almost dying was still not the wake-up call she needed to change. The moment that she realized she had achieved what she wanted and decided she wanted to living on her terms with more joy and simplicity. The advice she has for us on how to get off of the hamster wheel and take back control. How she's managed her depression and why it's important not to judge someone's insides by how put together their life may look on the outside. Her definition of a good life and much more.   RESOURCES MENTIONED Join Michele's Newsletter Michele on Instagram Michele's Book Manisha's Website: https://moneyzen.com/ http://moneyzenbook.com/ Manisha's Book: MoneyZen https://www.instagram.com/manishathakor/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/manishathakor/ https://www.youtube.com/user/ManishaThakor   ABOUT THE GUEST Manisha Thakor has worked in financial services for over thirty years, with an emphasis on women's economic empowerment and financial wellbeing. Lima, S., Car Abstract: Neurons coordinate their activity to produce an astonishing variety of motor behaviors. Our present understanding of motor control has grown rapidly thanks to new methods for recording and analyzing populations of many individual neurons over time. In contrast, current methods for recording the nervous system`s actual motor output - the activation of muscle fibers by motor neurons - typically cannot detect the individual electrical events produced by muscle fibers during natural behaviors and scale poorly across species and muscle groups. Here we present a novel class of electrode devices (''Myomatrix arrays'') that record muscle activity at cellular resolution across muscles and behaviors. High-density, flexible electrode arrays allow for stable recordings from the muscle fibers activated by a single motor neuron, called a ''motor unit'', during natural behaviors in many species, including mice, rats, primates, songbirds, frogs, and insects. This technology therefore allows the nervous system's motor output to be monitored in unprecedented detail during complex behaviors across species and muscle morphologies. We anticipate that this technology will allow rapid advances in understanding the neural control of behavior and in identifying pathologies of the motor system. He had consulted with Lancaster Colony as its leaders sought to drive deeper employee engagement—and better results. Thakor, along with collaborating researcher Robert Quinn from the University of Michigan, has done pioneering research into the economic benefits of higher purpose. Why does the firm exist? As the pair found, higher purpose must be discovered, not invented. And once it's discovered and articulated, it drives the firm's decisions. It's not about charity or doing good for the sake of doing good, but about understanding why the organization exists and having a north star to drive decisions. In our third bonus episode of On Principle, Thakor helps us understand what drove his research into higher purpose in the first place, what it means for leaders, and the benefits to firm employees and the firm's bottom line.OTHER RELATED LINKSMore about Anjan Thakor and Robert Quinn's book, The Economics of Higher PurposeThe original Harvard Business Review article by Thakor and QuinnA summary of the Higher Purpose book from the Olin BlogVisit the book's website.CREDITSThis podcast is a production of Washington University in St. Louis's Olin Business School. As the factory manager gave David A. Ciesinski, CEO of Lancaster Colony food brands, a tour of the facility, he led the company's top executive into a locker room with collapsing ceiling tiles and rusted fixtures. “Is this befitting of a ‘better food company'?” the manager politely asked, reflecting the company's slogan. That was one of many moments that drove home for Ciesinski that his company could do more to walk the walk of a better food company. He strove to lead an organization that treated employees well and, by soliciting their involvement, produced better products. His prior experience in other packaged goods companies led him to an epiphany: That employees demanded and expected more from the companies where they worked. Leaders needed to be dialed into what's important to their people.“We were leaving effort on the table,” he said. “I could just tell we were 25% of the way penetrating through. I had an intuitive sense we weren't getting everything we could out of people. And we could go a click deeper.”He felt the company was getting traction behind its mission statement, but at an abstract level. They'd articulated the “what”—what was Lancaster Colony—“but it didn't answer a fundamental question for us: Why does this company exist? What do we owe each other?” he said. Those conversations found their resolution after Ciesinski was exposed to an article in Harvard Business Review. Subsequent conversations with its authors—Olin's Anjan Thakor and the University of Michigan's Robert Quinn—exposed him to their research-based philosophy of “the economics of higher purpose.” Ciesinski tells the story of this turning point, what it took to get there, how he made it happen and what it has meant to the future of Lancaster Colony.RELATED LINKSMore about Anjan Thakor and Robert Quinn's book, The Economics of Higher PurposeThe Lancaster Colony websiteThe original Harvard Business Review article by Thakor and QuinnA summary of the Higher Purpose book from the Olin BlogCREDITSThis podcast is a production of Washington University in St. Louis's Olin Business School. An intriguing interview with a business school professor from Paul's alma mater, Anjan Thakor of the Washington University in St. Louis Olin Business School. The point of departure for this episode is Prof. Thakor's book of the same title written with Dr. Bob Quinn, and the book was launched as an analysis of why Dr. Quinn left a prestigious faculty position at the University of Michigan to go start a church in Australia. The book and our interview discuss what seems as if it should be common sense: people perform better when they believe what they're doing has a higher purpose than extracting paychecks and profit. Yet this common sense observation is now counter to decades of economic orthodoxy, both in the "practical" world and in academia, which focus on evaluating ways for employers to control and coerce employees using the tools of the market system. And it's not entirely surprising, since in many ways human nature is always poised to devolve into this style of interaction. Listen in and, if you're anywhere near as intrigued by this work as I was, read their book for more. Thakor co-authored The Economics of Higher Purpose: Eight Counterintuitive Steps for Creating a Purpose-Driven Organization with Robert Quinn, business professor emeritus at the University of Michigan. Thakor referred to a University of Michigan study of call-center workers. They came away with a higher sense of purpose—and effectiveness—after talking with students who had received scholarships based on fund-raising efforts in which the workers were participating. If you change a worker's mental map for seeing their job, this affects their performance. Authenticity requires a business leader's believable commitment to—and passion about—the organization's higher purpose, Prof. Thakor said. He also referred to insights from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks about the importance of societal and organizational motivation stemming from a sense of covenant, not merely contract. Covenant entails a sense of shared purpose. Noted business executive Bob Chapman says 88 percent of American workers say they want a sense of higher purpose but don't feel it is integrated in their work life. Thakor said his own research shows that employees whose companies have a sense of purpose are more likely to describe a sense of purpose in their lives—a spillover effect. The commitment to purpose must be top-down. Then, it cascades through the organization if you help employees learn and absorb what it means for them and their job, Thakor said. Harvard Business Review had a special issue on the importance of a sense of purpose.

2020 has been a headline year, dominated by news of a global pandemic, US elections, Brexit and China’s rise to power. On the business front, Corporate Purpose has emerged as the theme of the year. It comes on the back of an August 2019 statement released by the US-based Business Roundtable, calling into question the primacy of shareholders. For the past 50 years, corporations have operating on the principle that the only responsibility of business is to generate profits for its shareholders. With the world in such a muddle, that core idea is coming into question. If issues like climate change, inequality, and social justice aren’t addressed, there’s growing concern that societies everywhere will come face-to-face with collapse. Corporations – so say pundits – are best positioned to make a difference.Helping companies make that shift so that purpose and profits might co-exist is the work of my two guests this episode. Robert Quinn and Anjan Thakor are US-based professors. Together, they wrote a book entitled: The Economics of Higher Purpose: Eight Counter-intuitive Steps for Creating a Purpose Driven Organization. I spoke with them by phone recently. We touched on the traditional employer-employee contract, the new operating paradigm, and what it takes to bring a purpose agenda to life.
