“The Year of Monetizing Minutes Is Over”: Akixi on the Next Phase of Service Provider Differentiation, Podcast

“Gone are the days when service providers could differentiate on call minutes alone. Today, success depends on analytics, integrations, and delivering real-time value to customers.” — John Christian, Vice President of Marketing, Akixi In this special podcast presented by TR Publications and the Cloud Communications Alliance (CCA), Technology Reseller News publisher Doug Green speaks with John Christian, Vice President of Marketing at Akixi, a CCA member and a leading provider of cloud-based value-added services for service providers. Akixi helps service providers deepen customer engagement and generate new revenue through a robust suite of capabilities including advanced call analytics, CRM integration, and real-time call intelligence. The Akixi platform supports seamless provisioning across platforms like Microsoft Teams, Webex, and BroadWorks. Migration and Market Forces Christian highlights the accelerating shift away from legacy PBX platforms such as Avaya, Mitel, and CUCM—driven not only by end-of-life announcements and reduced vendor focus but also by the pull of modern cloud-based solutions. This dual push-pull dynamic is compelling more businesses to modernize their communications infrastructure. Beyond the Seat and the Minute While platforms like Microsoft Teams and Webex have captured collaboration and call control, Christian argues that native analytics capabilities often fall short. This opens an opportunity for service providers to differentiate with value-added services like real-time analytics, especially in regulated or high-demand environments such as healthcare. “Real-time visibility into call behavior is no longer a luxury—it's a competitive necessity,” Christian says, citing examples such as doctors' offices that rely on precise call management for appointment scheduling and patient response. Redefining Contact Center Needs Christian notes a shift in how contact center functionality is being consumed. Instead of investing in large, complex platforms, organizations now seek modular, scalable features such as call recording and CRM integration—without needing hundreds of agents. He explains that Akixi enables service providers to offer these components as standalone tools or bundled solutions, meeting the evolving needs of midsize and enterprise clients while maintaining a lighter implementation footprint. Competitive Landscape With the growing number of Microsoft-certified partners and Direct Routing providers, the market for Teams-based voice services has become saturated. Akixi enables service providers to stand out by layering critical customer experience tools onto their voice offerings—tools that directly support performance metrics, compliance, and operational efficiency. “We're empowering over 100 service providers to build differentiated solutions,” Christian says. “Those who succeed are the ones who go beyond the basics and meet their customers' specific expectations.” Learn More For more information, visit akixi.com or connect with John Christian on LinkedIn.

UCaaS is not a final destination: Mitel's Luiz Domingos On Mitel Common Communications Framework, Mitel, Zoom Partnership, It's just another option that comes as part of this kind of solution “UCaaS is not a final destination,” says Luiz Domingos, Mitel's CTO. “It's just another option that comes as part of this kind of solution. That's how we see it.” Domingos tells us that, based on customer feedback, Mitel developed the Mitel Common Communications Framework. “The Mitel Common Communications Framework is a blueprint. It's the evolution of our hybrid communication solutions encompassing products and services. By definition, a hybrid solution, a hybrid deployment, is a combination of certain applications on-premise, hosted, private clouds, and the SaaS, UCaaS type of deployments. All of them supporting and providing services to the customer. So, there's some research done recently by Frost and Sullivan and also our checks with our customers. The majority of the customers out there are utilizing hybrid deployments. So, this is a figure that will remain the same for the next three years. Over 80% of customers are hybrid. A small amount of customers are either full premise or full cloud.” In this podcast, Domingos also discusses the just-announced partnership between Mitel and Zoom. “At Zoom, we found a partner that believes that as well. So the option or the opportunity to work with Zoom and partner really addresses the hybrid deployment and combines Zoom Workplace, and Zoom AI Companion, with Mitel's flagship communication platforms, our platforms for voice, with all the infrastructure that we created through the years, 70 plus million users out there, with the opportunity now of bringing Zoom capabilities into those customers, ensuring that there is a Zoom-first experience adapted to the Mitel's hybrid portfolio. For us, the hybrid model in this case for enterprises will bring security, the control, and will take the best of both worlds scenario, correct? We're taking the mission-critical communications and the long-term experience that Mitel has in the marketplace.” Earlier this month, Mitel and Zoom announced a strategic partnership designed to empower enterprises worldwide with a unique hybrid cloud solution that combines Zoom Workplace and Zoom AI Companion with Mitel's flagship communications platform in a modern, deeply integrated communication experience. The partnership will introduce a Zoom-first experience within Mitel's hybrid portfolio, including access to the full Zoom Workplace platform, which works seamlessly with existing Mitel investments. “Our contact center is evolving and we're into our next-generation program that will create the solutions that our customers need for AI and AI integration into our portfolio,” adds Domingos. “We're taking advantage of our large technology partnership community that are bringing very good products that augment the solutions around our voice and collaboration and contact center applications. One of them, I can illustrate a few of them. We have a company called PolyAI, and a company called Talkative that are providing very good entry levels or interesting entry points to our contact centers, particularly when you talk about chat, speech, and also capabilities for AI around virtual agents and analysts and analysts on the material that we create. On the opposite direction, taking insights out of our contact center, we have several partnerships.” Read the latest news and views on Mitel Zoom and Mitel announce strategic partnership to deliver differentiated AI-first hybrid communications and collaboration solution for enterprises worldwide Mitel's New Common Communications Framework: A Game-Changer for Hybrid UC Solutions Unlocking Hybrid Unified Communications: Mitel's Cloud Strategies, Security Measures, and Future Innovations, Evan Kirstel Blog  https://youtu.be/Xp2N6KMOB-E

Joan Joffe, the founder of Joffe Associates who would later play a pivotal role in the launch of South Africa's mobile industry, began her IT career writing machine code on an ICL (then ICT) mainframe. Joffe, who introduced the IBM PC to South Africa in the early 1980s (much to IBM South Africa's chagrin), has a storied career going all the way back to the late 1950s. Indeed, one of the first projects in which she was involved was developing the very first computerised payroll system for the SA Railways (now Transnet). In this latest episode of the popular TCS Legends interview series, Joffe tells TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod about her early career, what led to her striking out on her own with Joffe Associates, and how she eventually became marketing director for Vodacom during its start-up years. What many people might not know about Joffe is that she even had a stint as a technology journalist at one point in her career, writing a column for FinanceWeek, a now-defunct business magazine. In this episode of TCS Legends, Joffe chats about: • Her studies at Wits University; • Her early programming career; • Her time in the US, where she worked for Wells Fargo Bank and Standard Oil; • Her time as a saleswoman for HP selling pocket calculators and how that led to her securing an HP dealership and the formation of Joffe Associates; • The launch by Joffe Associates of the IBM PC in South Africa and Joffe's clashes with local IBM management at the time; • The sale of Joffe Associates to Datakor, and why it was a disaster; • The Vodacom opportunity and what was involved in lauching South Africa's first mobile operator; • The battle over Vodacom's advertising agencies; • Working with Vodacom's founding CEO, Alan Knott-Craig; • Meeting Nelson Mandela; • The early skirmishes with MTN; and • The launch of the Vodacom Foundation. Joffe, who succeeded in a male-dominated industry, went on to become a founding member of Nozala Investments. She has also served on the boards of various organisations, including the CSIR, Datacentrix and a number of non-profit organisations. Among other accolades and awards, she is a recipient of the Wits University Lifetime Award for Entrepreneurship. What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Julz James, Senior Marketing Ops Manager at 6sense and Adjunct Professor at St. Edwards University. Summary: Jul is a marketing ops leader and a martech Professor who's rewriting the rulebook on how to navigate the martech galaxy. She walks us through automation inception, like a dream within a dream, and how she's leveraged an iPaaS tool to automate her automations. She also unravels intent data and how her team has moved beyond lead scoring to adopt account scoring. Sprinkle in her freelance learnings, and you've got a recipe for someone who's not just working in marketing ops but thriving, bringing fresh insights and strategies to the classroom. This episode is a nice reminder that with a bit of curiosity, a dash of adaptability, and a love for teaching, the galaxy of martech tools isn't just approachable—it's yours to automate.About JulzJulz got her start wearing multiple marketing hats including website management and SEO for variety of SMBs and later a big recruiting firm Julz then decided to go back to school to pursue a PhD at the University of South Wales, undertaking work-based doctoral research while working with an growing ecomm companyShe later worked as a Marketing Automation Manager at a few different tech companies including Mitel and a talent software startupJulz then decided to move from the UK to Austin Texas to take an Assistant Professor of Marketing gig at St. Edwards University and is currently still a Part-time Adjunct ProfessorShe also started freelancing in marketing operations and would later join Blue Prism as their srn Marketing Ops ManagerFinally she had a short stint at Adobe before settling in at 6sense where she's currently leading Marketing OperationsA New Approach to Educating the Modern MarketerImagine walking into a marketing class and instead of cracking open a dusty textbook that smells like the '80s, you're handed a sandbox loaded with today's leading marketing software. This isn't a scene from a futuristic movie; it's what Julz is bringing to the table in her marketing courses. Gone are the days of learning marketing theories that feel like a DVD. Julz has swapped them for lessons on the tools that marketers actually use in their jobs today.Julz loves teaching not for the sake of it but for the lightbulb moments she sees in her students when they connect the dots between class material and their day jobs in marketing. She draws from her own reservoir of experiences, sharing how she navigates the marketing world with tools like Marketo and Salesforce, making her classes a treasure trove of real-life wisdom. Her approach is refreshingly practical. Remember learning about the four P's and Porter's Five Forces? Julz believes those concepts are as relevant to today's marketing as a pager is to personal communication. Instead, she's all about diving into the digital tools that shape modern marketing strategies, shifting the focus from memorizing models to mastering martech.Creating course content is no walk in the park, especially when the galaxy of martech tools changes faster than you can hit refresh. But Julz is on top of it, crafting her materials from a blend of up-to-the-minute blogs, community discussions, and the latest ebooks. It's about making sure her students aren't just keeping pace but are ahead of the curve, ready to apply what they've learned in real-time scenarios.Key takeaway: If you're in marketing and looking to make your mark, take a page out of Julz's playbook. Forget the dry theories that gather dust on a shelf. It's all about rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty with the tech that's shaping our world right now. Being quick on your feet, always hungry to learn something new, and getting cozy with the latest martech? That's the secret sauce for not just making it but also having fun.Unlocking the Secrets of Martech Without Coding SkillsEver think you need to be a coding guru to rock at marketing tech? Julz has some news for you: that's not the case. Picture this: you're more like a tech-savvy wizard, weaving different digital tools together, making them do exactly what marketing needs them to do. And guess what? You don't need to write lines of code to pull it off.Julz puts it simply – her gig in marketing operations is kind of like being an IT whiz but all jazzed up for marketing. You get systems to play nice with each other, not by coding from scratch but by knowing just enough to make smart tweaks here and there. It's like knowing how to change a tire without being a mechanic. Sure, dipping your toes into HTML or JavaScript is helpful, especially when you need to adjust something small on a website or in an email. But the real game? It's all about seeing the big picture, understanding how different platforms and tools fit into the marketing puzzle.Drawing from her own adventures, Julz shares how her journey through engineering and tinkering with gadgets wasn't about the math or the mechanics but about solving puzzles and being curious. Whether it's figuring out why a campaign isn't performing or integrating a new tool into the tech stack, it's this curiosity and problem-solving drive that counts. Here's the kicker: the world of marketing tech is becoming more user-friendly by the day. Tools that used to require a developer to set up can now be managed with a few clicks and drags. This shift doesn't mean technical skills aren't valuable; it just means the focus is shifting towards strategy and understanding how to connect the dots between different technologies to create a seamless marketing engine.Key takeaway: Jumping into marketing tech doesn't mean you need to bury yourself in code. It's all about understanding the flow between different tools and technologies and using that knowledge to craft marketing strategies that hit the mark. So, if you're curious, ready to tackle problems, and can think on your feet, you're already well on your way to making a big splash in martech, no coding required. Why Qualified Accounts Beat MQLs in Modern MarketingWhen Julz landed at 6sense, she walked into a whole new playbook for marketing ops. Gone were the days of obsessing over who's scoring what in leads. Here, it was all about tuning into accounts showing us buying signals, loud and clear. It took her a hot minute — okay, six months — to really get why they weren't sweating over lead scores. Ditching lead scoring felt like saying goodbye to an old friend, but it opened her eyes to a smarter way to connect with potential buyers.Think of it this way: It's not about waiting for someone to wave a flag saying, "Hey, I downloaded your ebook!" It's about catching those signals that someone's already scoping you out, ready to chat about what you do. They call these signals from their AI buddy at 6sense, the 6QAs. It's like having a secret decoder ring that shows them who's already thinking about buying without them having to say a word. But here's the wild part: Once you spot these ready-to-buy accounts, how do you know who to talk to? That's where things get really interesting. They dove into their win stories and figured out who's usually in on the buying decision. Not by names, but by their roles. Are they in ops? Sales? Marketing? This wasn't just a wild guess; it's about knowing the committee that's going to nod yes or no to what you offer.Their sales conversations shifted dramatically. Instead of chasing down every single lead, they started having real talks with the right folks in these companies, all thanks to a mix of their own tools and a hefty dose of strategy. They're not just throwing darts...

In this episode, TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod is joined by Mustek CEO Hein Engelbrecht and Carlos Vizcarra, CEO of CPS Technologies, who was close friends with Kan for decades, for a wide-ranging discussion on the man's life and achievements. Kan founded Mustek in 1987 as a technology importer and distributor, and the company quickly became known for its locally manufactured line of Mecer PCs. Today it's one of the country's biggest technology distributors, and is listed on the JSE. Kan, who passed away in 2022 at just 62, was born in Taipei. He worked various menial jobs in his native Taiwan, including as a dishwasher, truck driver and removal company worker. After matriculating, he left to study mechanical engineering in the US at Pittsburg State University. In 1986, he moved to South Africa where his father was working a Taiwanese diplomat. He worked for a time at a cutlery manufacturing company before attending his first PC expo in Johannesburg. It was there that he met the MD of a Taiwanese company called Mustek Corporation. The MD of that company, Owen Chen, wanted to set up a warehouse in South Africa – Mustek in South Africa was born. He went on to establish one of the first PC assembly lines in South Africa. In this episode of TCS Legends, Engelbrecht – who joined Mustek in 1997 as group fin0ancial manager – and Vizcarra, with whom Kan formed a business relationship in the early days of Mustek, pay tribute to Kan, and share personal anecdotes about the man and his life. Vizcarra discusses the origins of Mustek, the early days of the PC industry and touches on the development of the Springbok, a South African-built clone PC brand that predated Mustek's Mecer line. In the interview, you'll hear about: • Mustek's early days building PCs in Garankuwa and why local assembly made sense in the era of sanctions; • How Kan and Vizcarra became close friends, despite competing with each other in business; • How Engelbrecht met Kan, and his first impressions of the man; • Vizcarra and Engelbrecht's favourite memories of Kan; • What drove Kan, a foreigner to South Africa, to business success – and how he became to embrace his adopted country; and • What he was like to work for; This episode of TCS Legends includes special bonus content: a full audio interview that TechCentral had with Kan in June 2017. The discussion centers on partner strategy, partner experience and customer experience. Lana recently took some time off and brings a fresh perspective to the conversation. She is digging deep into the current state of the industry as she looks for her next opportunity. She has spoken with many leaders about developing a partner strategy, which she and Rob agree is more than just expecting more sales. Many companies are embracing the partner experience discussion, which is sometimes blended with customer experience. The treatment a partner experiences in a relationship has a direct impact on the customer experience. This means measuring the partner experience is critical for success.  Lana says that it is essential to do a partner journey map in a similar way a company would do a customer journey map in order to have the strongest possible partner relationship. This involves determining what can be measured and analyzing those measurements to create the best experience for partners and customers. Josh Lupresto (00:01): Welcome to the podcast that is designed to fuel your success in selling technology solutions. I'm your host, Josh Lupresto, SVP of Sales Engineering at Telarus. And this is Next Level BizTech. Josh Lupresto (00:15): Everybody. Welcome back. Today we are talking about Contact Center, but more importantly, workforce management. So if you tuned in on the previous episode, you got to see the wonderful Jason Lowe talk about it. We were in the studio talking about the different aspects of, of really workforce management, laying it out, his approach to it, some of his experiences. Today we get to be joined by Chuck Krogman, who is SVP of Global Sales at Playvox, and we get to hear about Playvox's perspective and Chuck's journey. So, Chuck, thanks for agreeing to come on, man. Chuck Krogman (00:46): All right. Well, Josh pleasure to be here. And I already feel a little intimidated. I've known Jason Lowe, as we affectionately call him J-lowe for many, many years. And he's a, he is a tough act to follow. But appreciate you for, for the invite and participating today. Josh Lupresto (01:01): I have faith in you. I think it's gonna be great. Don't be scared. So, hey, Chuck, I, I want to hear first about just you, you know, before we get into Tech Stacks and WFM and all kinds of cool acronyms, just tell me about you. Give me your, your story, you know, your personal journey. Where did you start? How did you get here and, and, and, and how did you get to where you're at now? Chuck Krogman (01:23): Yeah. actually I, when I look and just kinda look at my own personal journey, it kind of just maps right along with a lot of the customers. From a, my entry and from a technology perspective, I, I kind of moved into the technology sector in, at a time installing, supporting and maintaining large, you know, premise based call centers for for Rockwell. And it kind of moved up through, I took a bit of a journey as probably many people in your studio audience can testify too. I was with 13 years with ShoreTel and Mitel when the whole voiceover ip IP telephony kind of took off and was hot and continued to progress, moved over to the cloud, was with some, some great c a s providers with both Five Nine and Talkdesk and and now here kind of more specialized in a really exciting and growing segment of the market in joining Playvox just a little over two years ago. So it's you know, it's been a, a nice, as I said earlier, I kind of made that move from premise into, into a uc solution, into backend to contact center. So it's been it's been a kind of fascinating, Josh Lupresto (02:37): I love it. I love that you rolled with the journey, right? I mean, you're, you're in a spot that stood and, and, and it was what it was for a while consistently, and then all kinds of crazy evolutions. So it's probably been fun to, to see all these different evolutions and who knows where it goes next. We'll, we'll get into some of that, I suppose. Chuck Krogman (02:52): Yeah, yeah. I, I will say you know, one of the gauges is it's really tough to get your wife and kids to, to really understand what you do. I think I've heard it simplified as much as, oh, my dad does something with phones. And I said, let's just stick with that, cuz and, and I also did see as my kids are growing up, you're, you're not really a popular career for bring your dad to school day. You know,

Mitel is a name that almost everyone in telecom is familiar with, while the company's products and services are installed or are being accessed, around the world. In contrast to some approaches, Mitel has carved out a diverse approach to economic and technological change. In this podcast we learn that Mitel's one size does not fit all approach means that Mitel is supportive of channel partners whose customers are in the migration journey at their own speed and with their own unique needs. Riggott notes that the new demands of hybrid working might be best served by focusing on the outcomes of the solution. This leaves room for choice and allows the customer and their channel partner vendors, to choose just the right mix of products and services to deliver consistent worker, agent and customer experiences, security, mobility, and consistency. Mitel is an industry stalwart, with a long history, a reputation for a laser focus on innovation, and its deep penetration in enterprise telephony. Our conversation today covered the following: Industry trends that we've seen emerging over the course of the last couple of years, and specifically some of the trends that Martin and his team at Mitel are leaning into. We explored business problems and communication challenges that customers face today in a world of hybrid work and what is often a distributed workforce, and some of the business problems Mitel helps customers solve. What the ‘different flavors' of Unified Communications are and what businesses should be thinking about when they are trying to level up their business comms capabilities. Mitel is a well-established company, having been in the market for almost 50 years, serving many customers. We chatted a little about that big customer base and some of the innovative things that Mitel is doing to serve them. We also explored verticals and some of the focus that Mitel is doing in the vertical markets and why that's significant. We also discussed the fact that the majority of Mitel's sales comes through its partner ecosystem and the role that customer lifecycle management plays here, as well as how partners benefit from that partner value prop. Lastly, I asked Martin to walk me through what's ahead for 2023 and beyond, and what the roadmap for Mitel's current and future customers looks like, and why that's something for our listeners, customers, partners, and the industry as whole to be excited about.

Check out this and other episodes of The Marketer's Journey on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts!Key takeaways from this episode:Focus your efforts. According to Venkat's philosophy, one of the greatest risks most companies face is trying to compete with too many different players at once. In his role at Mitel, Venkat has made it his mission to focus their marketing efforts in just one market (in their case, the U.S.) in order to optimize outcomes and avoid spreading themselves too thin.Tell customer stories. Another big focus of Venkat's when it comes to his role as CMO includes identifying and sharing Mitel's most inspiring customer stories. By weaving great storytelling into the majority of their marketing plans, the team is better positioned to connect with new prospects and communicate the value of their products succinctly.Market the way you'd like to be marketed to. Venkat mentioned that part of his mission as CMO is to do away with negative stigmas surrounding marketing, and instead create the kind of marketing campaigns that truly add value to audiences. By making use of the abundance of data we have at our fingertips today, Venkat believes we can become more targeted in our efforts and therefore, reach people in a way that resonates.Learn more about Mitel here: https://www.mitel.com/en-ca Learn more about Venkat here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venkatnagaswamy/

Martello and Mitel, a relationship going back a decade, has been renewed for another three years. In this podcast we learn about how Martello has continued to position itself as a trusted resource for users on several platforms and stages in migration. “If you can't make telephone calls, and now with Office 365 being dominant, you can't send emails, that's your productivity,” says John Proctor, CEO of Martello. Proctor argues that you need a single go to resource that can handle your issues across the network, and across the vast, remote, network hybrid working. There will be meshing of on-prem, and remote, of Mitel and Teams, a spectrum of available resources and infrastructure, and unnumerable ways that such a network might fail. Martello can pinpoint problems and deliver real time problem resolutions. Proctor points out that organizations such as a hospital might have multiple environments: on-prem, off-site, work from anywhere, all with security, privacy and stability being major mandates.  Martello can handle these diverse work landscapes. Proctor further points out that user expectations of the ready use and available communications, are generally high, even as the respective network turns up unprecedented concurrent challenges. Modern IT teams will need a partner that is ready to tackle all of these environments, together. Visit http://www.martellotech.com

Dave and Evan  discuss how Crexendo is providing new options for enterprises and service providers with Jon Brinton, CRO of Crexendo. Jon triumphantly stepped in after a last minute scheduling change. That was probably for the best. Evan and I have known Jon for a long time, and those conversations always go a little smoother. Turns out he knows a few things about Crexendo too. Not to mention he shed some light on Mitel and Intertel history too. Crexendo Inc., is a full-service cloud communications provider that delivers critical voice and data communication services to small, medium, and small enterprise markets. Crexendo made a bold move last year with its acquisition of NetSapiens. A communications platform that is rapidly growing. It powers service providers around the globe, including Crexendo. Jon is a seasoned technology executive with over 25 years of industry experience, and is responsible for overseeing the strategy, performance and alignment of revenue generating operations for Crexendo. Prior to joining Crexendo, Jon most recently served as the Vice President of North America Channel for Avaya. At Avaya, he led the Channel through an exciting time of transition from traditional Premise Based solutions to Software as a Service and Cloud delivered solutions for Unified Communications, Collaboration and Customer Experience. It's Friday June 24th, 2022, and this is a look at the information security news from overnight. From TheRegister.comA state-sponsored Chinese threat group that Secureworks has named Bronze Starlight, has a ransomware campaign that is targeting pharmaceutical companies, electronic component designers and manufacturers, US law firms, and aerospace and defense companies. The thing is, the ransomware is just a decoy. Researchers believe the true aim is cyber espionage, which explains why these specific types of companies are being targeted. Link to that research in the article. From BleepingComputer.com:Researchers have noticed a new tool they call Quantum that helps cybercriminals build malicious .LNK files to deliver payloads. These are especially popular in phishing campaigns, currently being used by Emotet, Bumblebee, Qbot, and IcedID. Quantum features a graphical interface and hundreds of icon and extension spoofing options, and you can rent it starting at less than 200 Euros a month. A link to the Cyble research in the article. From The HackerNews.com:Researchers have discovered a number of malicious Python packages in the official third-party software repository that are engineered to exfiltrate AWS credentials and environment variables to a publicly exposed endpoint. What's not for certain is if this is the result of an attack, or some sort of pen-test situation. This would be at least the third such example of a pen tester making a point in the last month or so. From ThreatPost.com:Google is warning that the Hermit spyware by RCS Labs out of Italy, is being deployed against Android and iOS users. The campaign is targeting victims in Kazakhstan and Italy. Last week it was learned that the Kazak government was using this same spyware against its own citizens. Google says the fake apps containing the spyware are not in the Google Play or Apple stores and are only downloaded from third party websites. And last today, from TheHackerNews.comA suspected ransomware intrusion against an unnamed target is leveraging a Linux based Mitel VoIP appliance as an entry point. CrowdStrike says the threat actor is exploiting a 9.8 severity bug that Mitel had patched back in April and are utilizing a couple of anti-forensic measures to erase traces of their actions. Details and links in the article. That's all for me today. Have a great weekend. Like and subscribe, and until next week, be safe out there.

When Vanessa Kanu is asked to provide some professional advice to her younger self she responds quickly and without hesitation: “Be more patient.” It's advice Kanu says she summons even today as she passes the 18th month mark of her CFO tour of duty with technology services company Telus International. “I'm perpetually impatient and I drive myself bananas,” says Kanu, who stepped into her first CFO role at Mitel Networks Corporation, after a steady 15-year climb inside the company she first joined as a financial reporting manager.    “As the company grew, it gave me an opportunity to learn and stretch myself through various roles. Whether it was external reporting, complex technical accounting, FP&A, or M&A and other planning functions, all these things combined kept me with the organization,” says Kanu, whose career climb at Mitel spanned a period during which the company grew from $400 million to $1.3 billion. “I had a great mentor at Mitel who was the previous CFO Steve Spooner,” comments Kanu, who would join Mitel's reporting team shortly after Spooner was appointed CFO and would ultimately succeed him as Mitel's finance chief. Along the way, Mitel management would execute an IPO and multiple strategic acquisitions before transitioning back to a private company.   “My thinking was as long as I'm learning and growing, there was no need to leave and that's what culminated into a 16-year tenure at that organization,” says Kanu, whose CFO appointment by Telus in 2020 ended her CFO chapter at Mitel – a tenure shortened perhaps by the same appetite for learning and stretching she has always relied on to propel her upward. - Jack Sweeney

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Janet Gregory. Janet is a successful Silicon Valley tech maven and the breadwinner of her family. She was an early employee at a start-up in the late 90s and wasn't sure if the business plan would take off. Much to her delight—it did—the company IPO'd and the stock price went through the roof … and then the dot-com bubble burst followed. As the stock went from its highest highs to its lowest lows, Janet and her husband watched their funds dwindle. Their nest egg was now, jokingly, only enough to buy a latte at Starbucks. This expensive lesson made Janet and her husband realize that they needed a trusted financial advisor to help them make better decisions and get out of the “buy and ignore” mindset they were in. Today, Janet is mostly out of the paid work world, but still does some select workshop facilitation, speaking engagements and consulting. She ran the sales practice for KickStart Alliance for more than 15 years, providing strategy in business development and sales planning for clients expanding existing markets or entering new ones. Janet has over 25 years of corporate experience in Silicon Valley, including two successful start-ups. ShoreTel (now Mitel) where Janet was part of a turnaround executive team that helped the company achieve profitability, rise from anonymity to top 10 market share. As Vice President of Sales, Janet positioned ShoreTel for a successful IPO (Initial Public Offering) and rise to #3 in the US market. Latitude Communication (now Cisco Systems), Janet was part of the founding executive team. As Vice President of Sales, Janet took Latitude Communications from zero revenue to profitability and a successful IPO. Octel Communications (now Alcatel / Lucent), Janet held multiple management roles in business development, sales, marketing and customer service. ROLM/IBM (now Siemens), Janet held multiple positions in sales and product marketing, rising from individual contributor to manager, and attending IBM management training. Janet is co-founder and principal of Kickstart Alliance (www.kickstartall.com/), a consulting firm dedicated to connecting clients with customers.
