My fourth guest for my South Asian author series is Sj Sindu. As a genderqueer Sri Lankan American novelist and riveting short story writer, SJ Sindu is one of the most exciting young voices out there today. Her first novel, Marriage of a Thousand Lies, won the Publishing Triangle Edmund White Award for debut fiction and was named an American Library Association, Stonewall Honor Book. SJ's upcoming book, The Goth House, is a collection of stories that focus on queer joy, as well as shocking cruelty. You know we love a good paradox. In today's episode, we talk about her upbringing in Sri Lanka, her memories of the Sri Lankan war, and how much that trauma is incorporated into her writing. And I obviously couldn't resist asking her if she loves MIA as much as I do. Find out how she navigated the many intersections of ‘other” she found herself within, the hilarious last-ditch effort she made to throw her Brown parents off her trail, and what she hopes to inspire in younger generations through her work. We talked about: How SJ came to know she was a writer (1:54)How SJ's search to find her voice and genre has shifted over time (6:30)SJ's genius solution to appeasing her parents and inspiring a fantastic read (8:12)The meaning and inspiration behind her novel Blue Skin Gods (11:48)SJ's new chapter book coming out in October: Goth House (18:34)SJ's relationship to Sri Lanka, its culture, and growing up there until age 7 (21:34)The first few explicit experiences of racism and discrimination that radicalized SJ (29:29)Telling queer stories and exploring the many possibilities within the marginalized experience (35:18)Dating as a queer South Asian (36:45)Life as an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (39:30)Rapid Fire Questions (42:09)SJ's bare bones for happiness (43:00)Connect with SJ: Website InstagramMarriage of a Thousand Lies Blue-Skinned Gods Let's Connect:InstagramThis podcast is produced by Ginni Media

Marriage of a Thousand Lies author SJ Sindu returns to the Vulgar Geniuses Podcast with their sophomore novel, Blue-Skinned Gods. In India, people make pilgrimages to an ashram to visit Kalki, a Tamil child born with blue skin believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. His parents make money from the blessings and miracles Kalki grants to the believers, but he soon doubts his divinity as he watches his relationships fall apart. Sindu shares with us the dynamics of intertwining religious history with gender and sexuality, their newfound adventure after being in lockdown during the start of the pandemic, and whatever became of their beer-making aspirations.
Visual misinformation, including fake, manipulated or out-of-context images and videos, is increasingly common on the Internet and social media platforms. Because of visuals' superior impression, retention, virality and persuasiveness, visual misinformation poses a significant threat to national security, social cohesion, and public health. Yet, we know very little about how users process and judge the authenticity of visuals, and the ways in which platforms and fact-checking agencies could effectively detect and fight against visual misinformation. In this talk, I will report findings from several recent experiments that reveal the characteristics of users most susceptible to visual misinformation, and a few effective technical and social interventions to counter visual misinformation. About the speaker: Cuihua (Cindy) Shen is a professor of communication at UC Davis and the co-director of the Computational Communication Research lab. Her research focuses on understanding visual misinformation and designing effective interventions. From 2017 to 2022, she served as the chair of the Computational Methods Division of the International Communication Association. She is also the founding associate editor of the journal Computational Communication Research, as well as the associate editor of Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.

The New York Times has finally confirmed what we've all known: the Hunter Biden laptop is real. Intelligence agencies and legacy media fortified the lie that Hunter's laptop contents were merely "Russian misinformation." This story not only validates Hunter's illicit drug-ridden sexual activities, but has wide-ranging ramifications for President Joe Biden and his profits from CCP-affiliated companies. What are the coincidences that this story revives as Russia invades Ukraine? Could it be that Hunter Biden's company, Rosemont Seneca, is tied to the US-funded biolabs in Ukraine? Or could it be a cover story for something worse? For instance, Senator Josh Hawley has recently accused Joe Biden's SCOTUS pick, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, of having a 'long record' of letting child porn offenders 'off the hook.' In a lengthy Twitter thread, Hawley provided several examples demonstrating "alarming" patterns of her lenient treatments for child sex offenders. Also, in a viral video, Biden bumbles about pictures of people in "compromising positions" being used as blackmail. Could this all be connected to what's on Hunter's laptop? Welcome to Episode #64 of the Red Ink Revival Leadership Podcast. Today’s conversation is with Blaine Bartel. Blaine was once considered “Youth Pastor of America.” He was a bestselling author. He hosted a national TV show. He hosted the largest weekly student gatherings in America. However, behind the curtains of his success was a man who was overcome by an unbreakable sexual addiction, severe clinical depression, and marital brokenness. After losing it all–a marriage of 30 years, his reputation, his career, and financial success–he began a journey to a full life resurrection. His story is one of redemption. Of hope. Of freedom. It wasn’t easy, it didn’t have a quick fix, and it was arduous. But it was worth it to finally know the real Christ and the power of His resurrection. Blaine’s ministry opportunities, coaching, and resources are at Blainebartel.com. Our conversation includes the following topics: * Blaine’s story of a “Death by a Thousand Lies” book and documentary. * How his addiction began with simple access to pornography in a hotel room. * How life as a guest speaker was filled with weariness, highs, and lows that predisposed him to vulnerabilities. * How for 23 years, the addiction moved from pornography, to live chat lines, to massage parlors, to escorts. * Why trying to control, beat the temptation, manage it, and repair compulsivity without other process relationships is ineffective. * Why Blaine didn’t reach out early on in his story to find trusted relationships and get help. * Blaine’s fantasies of escape to another country, and even ending his life through suicide. * The tension of a Jekyll and Hyde life: how the church Blane pastored rapidly grew in spite of his secret life. * The night his double life was discovered, and his first steps in the journey to recovery. * The tragic moments of watching his wife sob uncontrollably for days, after his disclosure to his wife and kids. * How psychologists Dr. Ralph Earl and Dr. Ken McGill changed him, the way a surgeon helps with physical problems. * The psychological and neurobiological autopsy at the treatment center for his recovery. * The season when Blaine feared that his recovery would only be incremental, rather than a true transformation and resurrection. * How Blaine has been in sobriety for 9 years without a relapse, experiencing real freedom different than white knuckle discipline. * How Blaine’s ministry is helping ministers to find safe places to come clean in their stories and find the help they need. * What Blaine thinks about the recently discovered double life of Ravi Zacharias. About Blaine - For the past several years, Blaine Bartel, with the support of his wife Lori, has been actively coaching men who are struggling with porn and sexual brokenness. He has discovered a gift of grace to help these friends do the work of resurrection and reinvent a life previously unimagined. You may be aware of some of Blaine's accomplishments. He hosted a national television show for more than a decade. He went on to become a best selling author. He led the largest weekly student gathering in America. This is what the public knew about Blaine. What they didn't know is that Blaine hated who he had become. Behind the curtains of his success was a man who was overcome by an unbreakable sexual addiction, severe clinical depression and marital brokenness. Ten years ago, he walked away from everything he had built and accomplished in an attempt to try to discover a life that was worth living. After a desperate attempt to end his life, he was placed in an addiction recovery center in Phoenix, Arizona for 30 days. After hearing Blaine's story, Dr. Ralph Earle, one of the nations leading sexual addiction specialists, told Blaine, “You are the poster child for sexual addiction. I honestly don't know if you will ever get free.” This was the beginning of a radical life transformation that would demand all Blaine had to give in order to fully encounter the resurrected life. Today if you ask Blaine what his greatest achievement is, he will share this extraordinary ten year drama of the dusty, winding road up the mountain of recovery. Blaine and Lori reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma, love hanging out with family and friends and have a weakness for reality shows. Along with his speaking and coaching, Blaine is a writer and has recently released a brand new book entitled, “Death by a Thousand Lies.” Website: BlaineBartel.com Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4nFYatA2Y-XyF-Kb9NCZwg?view_as=subscriber --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-pastors-round-table/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-pastors-round-table/support

Got started this week by examining that massacre of the Mormon family in Northern Mexico, and the ongoing protests in Iraq. Then it was on to the political crisis in Bolivia, Burkina Faso mining attack kills 37, Thai insurgency hits checkpoint, Saudis working for Twitter spying for the Kingdom, and a woman goes into anaphylactic shock after absorbing antibiotics from her boyfriend's semen. Music: Machine Head/"A Thousand Lies"
We return after a long break caused by all three of us finding out who we truly are. A massive Star Wars fan goes to battle against someone who thought podracing had something to do with laundry, we play two lies and a truth, and catch up on stuff.
Let us show you how people in government are working together behind the scenes to kill the Constitution & Liberty in a death by a thousand lies. They want you to think they don't know what the other is doing. They want you to think there is no connection. They want you to think they hate each other. This is NOT theory- this is true conspiracy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-krisanne-hall-show/support

We're featuring writers Rahul Mehta and SJ Sindu who read from debut novels No Other World and Marriage of a Thousand Lies featuring complex queer South Asian characters. They have a conversation with writer and Shoreline Review editor Sreshtha Sen about writing transnational narratives, how cultural trauma affects what we write, and resisting the common coming out story. How do you come out to family members whose language you don’t speak?
BLAINE BARTEL THIS SUNDAY For the past several years, Blaine Bartel, with the support of his wife Lori, has been actively coaching men who are struggling with porn and sexual brokenness. He has discovered a gift of grace to help these friends do the work of resurrection and reinvent a life previously unimagined. You may be aware of some of Blaine’s accomplishments. He was considered the “Youth Pastor of America.” He hosted a national television show for more than a decade. He became a best selling author. He led the largest weekly student gathering in America. This is what the public knew about Blaine. What they didn’t know is that Blaine hated who he had become. Behind the curtains of his success was a man who was overcome by an unbreakable sexual addiction, severe clinical depression and marital brokenness. Eight years ago, he walked away from everything he had built and accomplished in an attempt to try to discover a life that was worth living. After a desperate attempt to end his life, he was placed in an addiction recovery center in Phoenix, Arizona for 30 days. After hearing Blaine’s story, Dr. Ralph Earle, one of the nations leading sexual addiction specialists, told Blaine, “You are the poster child for sexual addiction. I honestly don’t know if you will ever get free.” This was the beginning of a radical life transformation that would demand all Blaine had to give in order to fully encounter the resurrected life. Today, if you ask Blaine what his greatest achievement is, he will share this extraordinary seven year drama of the dusty, winding road up the mountain of recovery. Blaine and Lori reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma, love hanging out with family and friends and have a weakness for reality shows. Along with his speaking and coaching, Blaine is a writer and has recently released a brand new book entitled, “Death by a Thousand Lies.”

Episode 6: All About E The important take away from this episode is that Sarah has a massive crush onMandahla Rose. Other things of note are that this movie is full of plot holes, there aresome very not great aspects of our main characters, and there’s a pretty fantasticlesbian sex scene! Enjoy friends! Annie and Chris talk about "alternative" visions of motherhood for Mother's Day this year, and it takes a weirdly dark turn. Sorry. Get a sneak peek at Chris's fall Women in Literature class and hear some of Annie's favorite mom-centric books. Chris's class books: + Dear Ijeawele by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie + The Mothers by Brit Bennett + The First Bad Man by Miranda July + Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel + Pregnant Butch by A. K. Summers + Marriage of a Thousand Lies by SJ Sindu + Beloved by Toni Morrison + The Babadook *CORRECTION: The quote from Beloved is "You your own best thing, Sethe," not "You your best self," as previously reported.
