Album Review - Myths Of Fate (Leaves' Eyes)

Welcome back to the Metal Debate podcast. Today we're reviewing the new album Myths Of Fate from powerhouse Leaves' Eyes. I'll touch briefly on each track in the listing, and then on some individual performances and notable elements of the sound. “Forged By Fire” is Myths Of Fate's opening song, and the album's first single. This one is dark and dramatic, with a dynamic vocal performance from Siirala and contrasting growled lyrics from Krull. A track like “Realm Of Dark Waves” is more straightforward while still giving heroic vibes with a very singable chorus. “Who Wants To Live Forever” has a slower tempo with well-crafted riffs and colorful keys, while “Hammer Of The Gods,” is a classic Leaves' Eyes anthem along the lines of ”King Of Kings” or “Fires In The North” in terms pacing, energy, and execution. One of the more intriguing songs on the album is “Into Eternity,” an incredibly emotive track - a potent mix of grit and gloss. “Fear The Serpent” feels massive and epic without losing any personality its the delivery. The second half of Myths Of Fate doesn't lose any momentum. “Goddess Of The Night” gives a folksy mood before moving to more vainglorious territory. “Sons of Triglav” brings power metal melodies and gothic metal atmosphere with brilliant juxtaposition of harsh and clean vocals. “Elder Spirit” is raucous and groovy, driven by potent riffs, and “Einherjar” (En-har-yar) has a pleasant, plucky sound along with some moments of intense metallic heaviness. The closer “Sail With The Dead” brings even more aggressive yet theatrical flavor, building to a dramatic peak in a superb finale. On Myths Of Fate each track seems painstakingly arranged with plenty of thought put in to creating dynamism and variety. Instrumentally, Myths Of Fate displays a lot of the hallmarks of past Leaves' Eyes albums. I'd describe Guitarists Mikki Richter and Luc Gebhardt as restrained in their approach, but always competent when featured. I particularly like the way the guitars come out of hiding toward the end of “Goddess Of The Night” with an evocative lead break beneath the final chorus and then bringing the track to an epic close with crunching riffs. On “Hammer Of The Gods” the guitars nimbly jump between melody and crunch, making a song work that otherwise might have fallen apart under the care of less skilled instrumentalists. Composer Jonah Weingarten – who some might know from Pyramaze – has provided a killer score. He is great here in splicing ambient melodies and atmospheric tendrils together into a tight sonic expressions. The orchestrations don't batter you over the head Nightwish-style, but are organic and fit seamlessly with the other musical elements. Elina Siirala has truly stepped up her game vocally on this one. Not that she didn't hold her own before, but this is on another level from her previous efforts. The first time I heard the intro track “Forged By Fire” I wasn't even sure it was Siirala singing. She evinces some real Tarja Turunen vibes on the verse here before moving back into her more accustomed timbre on the chorus. Another example of this change is “Into Eternity.” While I wouldn't say the song itself is overtly commercial, she does give almost a pop sensibility with the texture of the delivery, crooning and oohing her way through the track. And all along the way Krull gives the perfect growling counterpoint… exactly as much as needed, when its needed, and never overstaying his welcome. While I have enjoyed Leaves' Eyes last few albums, I have felt at times the band had bogged down with certain stylistic elements that deviated from the core of what they do best musically. Hats off to producer and mastermind Alexander Krull for delivering one of his best efforts. I'm giving Myths Of Fate a rating of 9/10. Myths Of Fate is released on March 22nd by AFM Records. You can purchase the new album plus other music and merchandise from the band via their official website and many other online outlets.

Hailing from the Heavy Metal hotbed (!!) of Saskatchewan, Canada, come the mighty Into Eternity. Long established veterans of the Metal scene, I.E. are on the comeback trail after too many years between full lengthers. A major reason the band's back the right path is the addition of veteran axeman Matt Cuthbertson. Our good buddy Matt is no stranger to this show. He's graced our presence numerous times with his other outfit, Untimely Demise. This outfit was recently back in town for a record release party for their latest effort, so we took it as an opportunity to get the 411 on everything in the I.E. camp. We discussed his coming into the fold, the awesome new album "The Sirens", and their new home in upstart label, M Theory Audio. Awesome stuff! In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss Tom Araya's trolling attempt and tim lambesis' controversial Halloween costume! Album Review - The Sirens (Into Eternity)

The Great Metal Debate review of Into Eternity's long-awaited album “Sirens”, releasing out on October 26, 2018. I'm going to be unapologetic about this - there is only one word that can truly describe this album… that word is intense. This album is unforgiving, it is relentless, it is intense. It is almost flawless, but, still leaves you at the front of your seat wanting more. The album “The Sirens” begins with the opening title track where you get this haunting, ghostly, eerie, piano intro, followed by the guitar melody that takes the same shape. This is followed by this intense, death metal styled riff, paired with blast beats and death metal vocals, shrieking high black metal vocals, and then some of the best clean vocals I've ever heard from anyone! Now, before listening to this, for the people who have never heard Into Eternity, and may be interested in giving the album a listen when it comes out, they are one of those bands that are really hard to pinpoint within one genre. That being said, they throw in classic heavy metal, classical elements, progressive metal time signatures, black metal vocals, death metal, and even power metal in the guitars and vocals. Not a lot of bands can pull off this style. Often when bands try to do something completely different and try and switch things up so radically they fail at it. But, thankfully, some bands do know how to concoct that formula appropriately end up leaving with happy fans. And, that‘s what you get with “The Sirens“. With the opening track you get black metal, death metal, power metal, classical, and heavy metal. And progressive metal, with the out-of-left-field transitions, death metal gutturals, melodic guitar solos, blast beats - you name it. All in one song! This album has so many memorable moments in it, such as Fukushima. It‘s obvious what the song is about - the tragic events that happened at Fukushima - at the power plant following the earth quake and tsunami, that claimed almost 18,000 lives unfortunately. That is probably my favorite song on the album. Of course, you can find a single of it that was released in 2012 with Stu Block on it. It doesn‘t sound much different than on the album, other than having Amanda Kiernan on vocals. But, she doesn‘t leave you missing Stu Block. Even though he was an awesome member of the band, left an awesome legacy of two albums. But, honestly, she sounds just like him. When she brings out the chorus it sounds like she‘s going Kobra Paige at one moment and then she brings out Chuck Billy (Testament) and Bobby “Blitz“ Ellsworth (Overkill). Wow! So many styles in one person; lots of diversity. Why not!?! Not to mention, the chorus is catchy… you‘ve get this awesome, guttural, slam-metal vocal that comes out of nowhere in the song. It gives me goose bumps just to talk about it! Another song I‘d like to mention on this album. Probably one of the more notable Into Eternity songs in their catalogue, it starts out with this finger-picked nylon acoustic melody that‘s played about four minutes into the song, with Amanda Kiernan singing doing all these dual harmonies. It gives you an Egyptian feel… a melancholic feel of being alone, of being nowhere near you want to be. And, suddenly, four minutes into it you‘re hit like a fucking freight train with these awesome, tremolo-picked riffs, solo, and then an awesome black metal blast-beat section at the end. You're left crushed and decimated. So, I give this album four out of five stars, just because I wanted more of this. Eight songs, fifty minutes long. A well-balanced progressive metal album. They don't go overboard, they don't go over the top, they don't jump the shark like some progressive metal bands do. They have balanced this album out and they have come out swinging on this come-back album. So, on October 26 check out Into Eternity's “The Sirens”.

Metal Ron breaks his convention of playing the 'now", and gives you a show playing the then. Taking you back to the by -gone era of the 80's & 90's in sets by country , with just a smattering of current and new and have fun with it.This molton playlist from past included such classic bands as, "Holocaust", "Malice", "Living Death", "Jaguar" & more, plus some great new Canadian dities as locals "Ancients" & new "Into Eternity". So dust off those wristbands and BANG THOSE HEADS!!!

On a hot summer day here in July, METAL RON sweated it out in the stuffy studio, (not letting an early technical gremlin detour him), cranking out some classic METAL like "Trouble", "Coroner", "Metal Church", and lots of new treats as new 'Mastodon", "Opeth", "Evile" and not forgetting the CANADIAN onslaught of Mortillery, classic Razor, "Into Eternity: and a whole lot more!!! WHO NEEDS A DEMOLITION CREW WHEN POWERCHORD CAN DO THE JOB WITH A TWIST OF THE VOLUME CONTROL!!! enjoy!

These are songs that inspire the best in us. They make us want to join the bands on stage, take up an instrument, and add our own little something to the mayhem. Any instrument is fair game. We've divided things up a bit between instruments, or at least inserted our own commentary for most of the songs, so give a listen... then respond in the comments with your thoughts, and certainly any songs we left out!Due to the nature of the genre, there is a preponderance of guitar songs. Oh, and both DJ's Yuletide and Jack actually DID begin playing guitar because of THESE SONGS! Jack made us proud, having had the honor to shred Episode 666 (see playlist) in front of a live audience at none other than the WORCESTER PALLADIUM, perhaps the MOST METAL venue ever (insert citation here...)?Disclosure of DANGER:This show may inspire reckless amounts of air drumming, with feet thundering mercilessly on dual air-bass-drums; air-shredding leading to fingers air-bleeding; and of course fingers fluttering at supersonic speeds along air-keyboards until complete air-dislocation.
