The thing I enjoyed about my conversation with Kim is, she's a great example of a large majority of people struggling with addiction or mental health challenges... they are functioning, often professional, and masters at hiding in plain sight. They may not even know that the way they feel or the amount of substances they are using is abnormal. Kim has always been a high achiever and with high achieving comes perfectionism... this underlying air of nothing ever being good enough. However, this did not stop Kim from climbing the ranks in multiple organizations and always qualifying as a top-ranked performer. One of the most profound things she said was, I was doing extremely well at work as one of their top salespeople and I was sitting behind my keyboards wanting it all to end. With the help of an empathetic Nurse Practitioner, therapy, and support groups Kim got sober and started helping others that were struggling as well. Although getting sober changed Kim's life, it still took a while before she felt comfortable enough to be open about her challenges publically and professionally. She said, "I hid my alcohol & mental health challenges [because] I didn’t want to be viewed as weak, incompetent, & possibly lose my seat at the table." Today Kim is a National as a State Trainer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Speaker, Teacher, an Ambassador, Speaker, and Member of the Advisory Board of Worth Living Mental Health, a Member of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Health System Campaign to Combat Stigma and Discrimination in Behavioral Health, Contributing Author and Survivor. In April 2019, she will be certified by NAMI National as a State Trainer for the NAMI, In Our Own Voice program. Oh yeah, and she retired from her corporate job and now lives anywhere she would like in the form of an amazing RV. At the time of our interview, she was posted up on the beaches of Florida! 31: Christ Saves the Napalm Girl From Communism: Part 2 of Kim Phúc’s Testimony

The Transformation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2020 55:09

In last week’s episode, we heard the gripping story of Kim Phuc’s life before being saved by Christ. We heard about her idyllic childhood being traumatically altered by the napalm attack which was captured in the world-famous “Napalm Girl” photo. We heard how her only dream was to be a doctor so she could save the lives of others just like the doctors of the Barski Unit that had saved her life. We heard how that dream was stolen from her by the communist government who used her as political propaganda. And ultimately, we heard how Christ miraculously saved this despairing young woman just two days before her planned suicide. When we left Kim, she was still living under the oppression of the Communist government, who had shutdown her church and imprisoned its pastors.  So what became of Kim and her new faith? Did her faith survive spiritual isolation? Did Kim survive Communism at all? Better yet, could she escape these terrible circumstances as a young girl with no connections and no means to do so? In this episode, we pick Kim’s story back up and we will get answers to all these questions and more. Once again, you’re up for an unbelievable journey as the conclusion to this story is just as wild as the start. This episode is about how God miraculously saved Kim Phuc from Communism. One of the first significant steps the Lord took to save Kim from Communism was to miraculously create a friendship between the Vietnamese Prime Minister and herself. This friendship allowed Kim to leave Vietnam under the auspices of studying abroad in Cuba. Cuba was still a Communist country but at least moving there kept her away from the abusive hands of the Vietnamese Government as they continually objectified her as mere political propaganda. Kim was still without Christian fellowship for many years but it was in Cuba that Kim met her husband. She wasn’t sure if she’d ever be seem beautiful again to a man after her accident, but this man 100 committed to her. The two married and planned their honeymoon in another Communist country, which was the extent of where they were allowed to travel by the Communist regime. It was on this trip that God worked a series of major miracles in the couple’s life. The miracle that set off the whole chain of divine blessings happened while they were at a quick layover in the Toronto airport. Kim had been looking for a chance to defect from her country and the Lord revealed an opportunity to do just that as she waited in that airport. Kim told her husband, who wasn’t a believer, that she felt the Holy Spirit told her this was the time to defect and that she was going to obey what God had shared. Her husband thought she was seriously challenged, not knowing what to do, but ultimately his love for his wife was enough to take the chance. The couple did not get back on their plane. They instead hid and took a leap of faith asking someone what they should do. They didn’t know anyone in Canada and they didn’t have any resources to support themselves. All of this would be moot though if Canada wouldn’t let them enter the country. Kim’s husband was very scared as the consequences for their actions could be very severe. But the Holy Spirit assured Kim and she spoke to her husband confidently that everything was going to miraculously work out because God was taking care of them. Sure enough, divine appointment after divine appointment started revealing themselves. Perhaps the chief among the miracles was that this exact time happened to be during a very small, unprecedented window where Canada was allowing people in the couple’s situation to enter the country. Eventually God secured the couple housing, jobs and even a church. This last blessing was not only sweet for Kim who had been spiritually surviving only with her personal Bible and solitary prayer, but Kim’s husband had become a Christian as well. Once he had witnessed the miraculous way God had saved the couple from Communism, his eyes were opened and he gave his life to Christ. Listen to the episode above for the incredible full story of Kim Phúc’s life. Don’t miss part 1, as well, if you haven’t hear d it yet. HIGHLIGHTS Kim's parents, who were dedicated to the Cao Dai religion of her youth, have converted to Christianity and, by the grace of God, been able to move to Canada to be with their daughter's family. Kim lived in Cuba for six years. Today Kim has undergone advanced treatments that have relieved her of the lifelong pain caused by the napalm. The napalm attack actually perpetrated by the U.S. military. The attack was not supposed to be carried out but was an accident. Kim met the pilot later in life and he profusely apologized while Kim completely forgave him.

Today Kim & Tonya Discuss breathing techniques that help to invigorate or improve focus for those times when a natural “pick me up” is needed. While many yoga styles use the “skull shining breath” kapalabhati, Kundalini’s aim when practicing this technique is to let the energy of your lower chakras, your energy centers, flow to your high chakras. The lower chakras represent the more earthly and selfish desires, while the higher ones stand for love and connection. In yoga, you hear about the kundalini energy rising. The kundalini energy is stored in your first chakra, close to your coccyx, and is often pictured as a curled-up sleeping stance. When the snake wakes up- it represents your awareness- it moves up along the chakras to bring you to a higher state of being. This breathing technique is one way to wake up the so-called snake: it fans the flames of your kundalini energy so it can flow through your whole body.

Failure sucks. Failure feels terrible. Failure is a blow to the ego. And nobody wants to be a failure. As a matter of fact, the whole concept of failure is what keeps most people from trying in the first place. But what is a failure?Failure is the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective and may be viewed as the opposite of success. Ranges from failure to sell the product to fractured relationships to personal injury. In life, it’s necessary to fail. Failure is a stepping stone. Failure teaches us experience, knowledge, resilience, growth, value. So why is so f*cking hard? Why is it hard to tune out the naysayers, to understand that it is okay to fail, to use failure as leverage and to revisit our life goal and purpose? Today Kim & Tonya Discuss the concept of failure and share personal failure stories.

As defined by Leo Kanner back in 1943, children with autism have an innate inability to form the usual biologically provided affective contact with people. He suggested that individuals with autism have difficulty reacting to the input of new stimuli encountered on a daily basis and that they live in a world of sameness and aloneness, which if disturbed, causes them to fall into a major panic that does not cease until removal of the perturbation agent. These days, it is well known that a dysfunction of the GABAnergic signaling early in a child's development leads to a server excitation/inhibition imbalance in neuronal circuits, which may be responsible for some of the behavioral deficits observed in individuals on the autism disorder spectrum. Today Kim and Tonya discuss the benefits of yoga therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder as Kim shares her personal experience working with ASD clients and on on her 2017 research proposal on the topic presented at the annual MUIH research symposium and a recent Symposium for Yoga Research (SYR) at Kripalu. ASD is associated with behavioral deficits and anxiety. Increasing tolerance in reacting to and managing the input of new stimuli encountered daily are essential components to improve function in everyday life. Abnormal sensory processing deficits may contribute to the lack of socialization and connection with others and is proposed to have correlated with low vagal tone. Yoga interventions have been found to help with vagal tone, anxiety, in ASD and to have benefits in self-regulation for Psychological health. However, no studies have addressed yoga’s effects on tolerance, resilience, regulation of sensory processing, socialization and connection in those with ASD.

Today’s Topic: Is your dream bigger than your excuse? Today Kim and I talk dreams and achieving goals. No matter how big your dream, the question is still valid. The reality is we could have quit so many times in our 15 years of “overnight” success. We could have found so many excuses, but our dream was always so much bigger!  Sometimes people confuse freedom with options but having that dream is so important to success. It was always a big challenge building the business. The question I have is: Why was it that we didn’t quit where others do so? Kim’s theory is that everything happens for a reason and it’s important to keep following the path you’ve chosen. Other people would watch our travel videos and dream. We were selling that dream of freedom and travel. All of the groundwork in our early work, niche areas has led us to where we are today. It’s all about learning lessons and building understanding. It’s also vital to  Know what you want. Know whether it’s working or not. If not, change your approach until it works. Sometimes though the distance in your brain between your goal and belief is too far apart. Ask yourself if your dream is going to happen. Check your gut feeling — is this dream a realistic one? Check your goals. Are they too far out of your belief? The next step is setting up an action plan to accomplish your dream and getting honest feedback from a group of trusted people. Today’s Topic: Building success, often over a long time, is the key to achievement. If you climb a mountain you begin at the bottom, right? Then when you reach the peak, you know you’ve earned it. You can reap the rewards. However, that can take time. Today Kim and I talk about the effort you need to make to start any entrepreneurial journey and to understand that you need to gradually build your platform for success. As Kim says, you need to pick the lane, the niche, that you want to be known for to start. Then branch out as necessary, move into associated areas. Kim says this isn’t always the case with people she sees, they tend to be scattered rather than focused. I talk about listening to your intuition. The story about the fire chief understanding when an evacuation is needed immediately is a case in point. It’s when something doesn’t feel right. We all have this and need to listen to it. It’s a survival mechanism. People often look at successful entrepreneurs and think if they copy them, they too will have success. What they don’t see is the often years of intuition built up through experience that someone needs to have to make those right decisions. It’s about the hard work that goes into building the success, climbing the mountain. Over time we developed deep relationships with people. I talk about the importance of not judging every moment, of letting it be. As Kim says, look at the wider view, the foundations that have been laid in a project for a successful future. So, don’t judge the moment, she adds. Trust your thought, trust your intuition. Keep going, don’t let fear stop you.  Sometimes the bigger the success, the longer the journey. Good luck!
