About a year ago, I met Kim Walsh Phillips. We belong to the same coaching program. When I met Kim, I was blown away at her knowledge about social media selling, marketing, and messaging. She is THE ONE that the Big Names hire! People like Kevin O'Leary, Dan Sullivan, and so many more. Kim's mission is to help you create financial freedom and the life of your dreams by selling your course to the vast audience that is literally waiting for you to show up and put it out there. She's done it over and over again, and she teaches thousands and thousands of others how to do it…including me. I wanted to have her on “I HAVE TODAY with Diane Forster” because she's too good to keep a secret. You know that feeling when you go see a great movie and you can't wait to tell everyone to go see it? Yeah…that's the feeling I have about Kim. She is where she is today because of who she is and what she's been through to get there. In this interview she shares how she went from having to hock her engagement ring to make payroll to landing at #475 on the INC 5000 List! You've got to hear this story! She shares some great strategies and gives away an amazing gift so that you can learn How to Make 6 Figures: https://www.powerfulprofessionals.com... How do you 10x the results of your email communication? While most entrepreneurs have the concept of an email list, too many lose sight that their list represents leads who are interested in different subjects and have different problems. Kim Albee set out to solve the problem of email marketing failing to attract client attention. She shares how the revolutionary, predictable email marketing tools she's developed can build client relationships while increasing your ability to talk at scale with thousands of customers. By asking the right questions you can plan your content strategy and tailor automated communications in a way that makes your prospective clients feel heard. Instead of talking AT prospective clients and falling on deaf ears… email communication that is real and more personalised builds trust, starts conversations and ultimately closes deals. She explains the alternative and more effective way to a ‘no-reply' email and the 3 keys to making it into your client's inbox. You don't have to guess or resort to tricks, Kim has developed an intelligent methodology that turns email into predictable engagement and predictable results. As Kim says, email is still the workhorse providing more returns than any other method, including social media, which it beats by about 4000% in terms of conversions. It may seem obvious to turn email into a natural conversation but how do you ask questions, listen, respond…Kim has the answers to this which she passionately shares in this fascinating interview. As Kim describes, the key might ultimately revolve around the idea of serving as a "navigator" on the patients' hearing aid journey, which might ultimately not include device sales, but rather compensation through services. Therefore, the three discuss how professionals will need to alter their revenue models and service delivery models in order to participate in this portion of the market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/futureear/message

6-8-21 Tonight at 9PM ET/3AM Norway time, we're continuing our journeys around Europe and talking with Anders Riseng, co-owner of Askheimer Meadery in Askim, Norway. Askheimer Meadery is one of just a few meaderies so far in Norway, but that is changing, as mead awareness grows in Europe. Anders and his partner Jarl-Magnus teamed up with the idea of starting a meadery during a tasting session at the local beer club – Askim Beerclub, back in 2017. Both guys had then been homebrewers for several years, and Anders had one brewery behind him as well as just started up Slakteren Brygghus (The Slaughter Brewhouse) in the next city. Jarl-Magnus studied phytotherapy - commonly defined as the study of the use of extracts of natural origin as medicines or health-promoting agents. At the tasting session, they tasted some mead, and it sudden hit them that they could do this better. And so the test brews started up. After the first rounds of test-batches, using local summer blossom honey, herbs, fruit and/or berries, they tested the mead upon two chefs and a wine sommelier. After considering their feedback, they understood that their mead was a bit on the sweet side, and lack of acid. So they did new batches, and they came out great. The Askheimer name comes from a rewrite of the old name of the city Askim, located in Viken county. The cities' name in the Viking age was Askheimr. They chose this name to show that this is where the idea of starting a meadery was conceived. It also describes the desire to use as much local products as possible. And Anders and Jarl-Magnus use Norwegian or Nordic ingredients as much as they can. After Superstitions Meadery's Jeff Herbert gave them good feedback at a between sessions tasting at the Mikkeller Beer Celebration 2019, they decided to go commercial. When they got home from Denmark they started to planning the meadery. After months of preparations and plenty of paperwork they got their permits in early 2020 and the company was offically founded in April,.2020. They moved into the meadery production location in May 2020. Their first meads hit the market in November 2020. In their first year of operations, they won two gold medals at the Mead Madness Cup 2020, which got them off to a great start! Anders was kind enough to send mead samples to us, and we'll be tasting them tonight on the show! Join us on the live chat! Sponsor: Having trouble keeping accurate brew logs? Gap Year For Grown-Ups

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2020 38:18

In this episode Debbie talks to a real adventurer, a 63-year-old woman who spent 2019 on a self-organized global gap year. Kim Klaft quit a well-paid position as a nonprofit executive to travel and volunteer in 25 countries. Over the course of one calendar year she worked in soup kitchens, food banks, homeless shelters, orphanages and in hurricane relief efforts (see her list below) as she moved around the globe. She did this on her own, as a single woman, with the goal of embedding herself into cultures and communities. And because it was something she had always wanted to do. When she told her financial planner about her proposed year, she expected him to put the kibosh on it because she had not finished saving for retirement. Instead he said, "Go! Otherwise you will always regret not having done it." They talk about how she chose one humanitarian project after another using Google and word-of-mouth. As Kim explains it, "I researched volunteer opportunities in three ways:  1. Google searches and reading reviews; 2.  speaking with people in-country when I was fortunate enough to have a connection and/or to be introduced via e-mail; and 3. meeting people along the way who were volunteering for a particular agency. I asked questions about how volunteers were treated, whether the group was true to its cause, whether it was run in a financially responsible way, etc." They also talk about writing and why Kim decided not to write about her year while she was living it, so as to stay in the moment.  Kim is now back in Detroit and feeling lucky to have found work as a consultant for several nonprofits. She describes herself on her LinkedIn profile (convincingly) as having a heart for the under-served, a head for business and the spirit of an entrepreneur. In today’s conversation, they dig into how she engineered the logistics of her gap year and how it unfolded organically.  Despite - or perhaps because of - the disparate nature of her experiences in so many different places, the trip made her life feel “in sync,” as if the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle were falling into place.  As to how Debbie found Kim, Kim sent her an email out of the blue halfway through her year saying she had just stumbled onto this podcast. She was in Budapest at the time searching for her next thing. They stayed in touch and Debbie followed up in early 2020 to ask if she would come on the podcast to talk about her experience. At first Kim declined. She wrote in an email: "I haven't yet had the ideal opportunity to wrap my head around:  1) What was my purpose? 2) How did that compare to the reality? 3) I knew going into it that there would be a ripple effect but the ripples were bigger and more far reaching than I would have been able to imagine proactively 4) What unexpected humanitarian efforts arose and how can we recognize those in everyday life? 5) How have I changed (or, perhaps, what about my passions were confirmed by this experience)? 6) What's next?"  Of course, Kim's email touched on all the key questions, revealing that she had indeed thought a lot about her gap year.  They recorded this conversation several months ago, before the pandemic and social distancing. So at the end Debbie checks in with Kim again to find out how she’s doing now. Living without regret (her reason for taking her gap year) has an even bigger resonance today as she looks back at an extraordinary year of travel and service.  Mentioned in the episode Kim's list of her favorite volunteer humanitarian efforts: Burgers by the Dozen: Self-directed distribution of warm hamburgers to the homeless in Budapest, Hungary; Sidney, Australia; Toronto, CanadaEarthship Hurricane Relief Effort (Puerto Rico)Sisters of Mercy Orphanage and Malnutrition Clinic (Port Au Prince, Haiti)The Intrepid Foundation (Greece, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia)The Lingap Center (Cebu Island, Philippines)Serve the City Polska (Krakow, Poland)The King’s Table Soup Kitchen (Brisbane, Australia)WanderWorld Foundation (Papua New Guinea)Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen (Singapore)Kechara Soup Kitchen (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)Food Bank: Hands On LondonAll Hands and Hearts Hurricane Relief Effort (Houston, Texas)Ben’s Bells (Teaching the intentional practice of kindness, Tucson, Arizona)Baldwin Center (Pontiac, Michigan)  List of countries she visited:  Puerto RicoHaitiJapanChinaGreeceBulgariaAlbaniaKosovoMacedoniaSpainNetherlandsGermanyFranceSwitzerlandPolandSlovakiaHungaryUnited Arab EmiratesAustraliaPapua New GuineaSingaporeMalaysiaEnglandCanadaUSA Kim notes: "I do realize that Puerto Rico is part of the USA but I count it separately because it was a different world!"  Support this podcast:Leave a review on iTunes: it means so much!Subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify  Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Julie-Roxane KrikorianPodcast websiteMusic by Manuel Senfft  Connect with us:Email: thegapyearpodcast@gmail.comTwitter: @debbieweilInsta: @debbieweilDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After Sixty

Today on Feminine Roadmap guest Kim Casey Cobb shares how she used her experience as a missing child to gain victory over victimhood. Kim’s story begins when her parents were going through a difficult divorce, her biological father made the decision to abduct her and her brother during a routine weekend visit. As the years passed, they moved many times to avoid being found, missed a lot of school and found themselves isolated from any family contact. As Kim neared her mid-teens she began to realize that she had to run away of she ever wanted to live the life that she dreamed of. Looking back on those years of being a fugitive with her father then running away to escape her father, Kim has learned to recognize that while her experience was not a common one, it did have some elements that she could use to help other people overcome their own struggles with being stuck in a victim mindset and unsuccessful patterns of behavior. She firmly believes that every situation has its gift, that there is always beauty in the ashes of even the most difficult life circumstances. No matter where you come from, what you’ve been through, how you’ve been hurt, there are mental and emotional processes that you can go through to heal, to deal with the scars that remain and live a life that is fulfilling. The greatest key to change of any kind is the management of our minds, the thought we think about ourselves and our situations. If you find yourself stuck, feeling the victim and can’t seem to find your way to freedom, this is the episode for you! Grab a cuppa something wonderful, a good sister friend and listen to this empowering conversation. Start making those changes in your life today so you can live the tomorrow that you dream of. www.feminineroadmap.com/episode141/

What Do You Need? A simple question inspires The Turquoise Cart Program at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.   In this episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell speaks with Kim Muench, a volunteer program coordinator at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Kim began her Turquoise Table journey by placing her own Turquoise Table in her front yard. Unfortunately, this was met with resistance by her Homeowners Association, and, despite Kim’s efforts to convince them otherwise, they would not allow her to keep her table in the front yard. Still determined to create community in her neighborhood, Kim began a tradition of bringing her Turquoise Table from the back yard to the front yard one Friday night per month. Each month, between three and seven families join hers to play games on the street and socialize. Kim hopes that even more families will join them, and that her community will continue to grow.   However, bringing out her Turquoise Table once a month wasn’t enough for Kim. She brought the idea of placing a table at Cook Children’s Hospital to her boss, who told her it wasn’t feasible. However, Kim and her boss came up with the idea of turquoise carts: rolling hospitality carts that go from room to room serving parents. When children are in the hospital, parents often forget to take care of themselves. The children receive constant attention, but parents often lose themselves in the care of their children. Kim wanted to start The turquoise Cart Project to serve and uplift these parents. To jumpstart the project, Kim asked all the parents who had children in the hospital: “what do you need?” This simple but powerful question rendered all the information she needed to pursue her idea of the turquoise carts.    Kim is grateful for the impact the project has already made, and encourages listeners to create their own Turquoise Table missions wherever they are. The Turquoise Table calling is not limited to a front yard picnic table. As Kim has proven, it can be manifested anywhere that there are people to be served and community to be created.   Links/Resources:   For full show notes, discussion guide, Suppers for Sharing recipe, and Conversation Starter, visit www.theturquoisetable.com/podcast, or join us in our FREE online community, The Turquoise Table Community.   Connect with Kristin: Instagram Facebook The Turquoise Table   Connect with Kim Muench: LinkedIn Facebook

Episode Summary I Love You Rituals are playful, one-on-one interactions that build loving connections while increasing attention span, decreasing power struggles and promoting language and literacy at school or at home. These brain-building interactions facilitate optimal development for young children and create lifelong bonds between children and adults. If you’re interested in incorporating I Love You Rituals into your current classroom practices, you may wonder: Where should I start? How do I introduce I Love You Rituals? When in the world do I have time to teach them? Join Master Instructor Kim Hughes, a 30-plus year veteran of the education field, as she leads a session on making I Love You Rituals part of your day. Kim answers frequently asked questions about I Love You Rituals and shares valuable strategies and insight. As Kim says, “Conscious Discipline is not a second job. We weave all of this throughout the curriculum so you have a beautiful tapestry.” Essential Takeaways • The best exercise for the brain is exercise. • The powers of Conscious Discipline allow us to see conflict differently, while the skills allow us to respond to conflict differently. The structures help adults and children practice the skills. Without the powers and skills, putting up structures is merely “decorating your classroom with Conscious Discipline.” • Everyone needs “joy juice.” Every child needs at least one adult to love and support them. • Learn the I Love You Rituals yourself first, then practice them with children. Once children have practiced with an adult, they can do I Love You Rituals together. • Teach ILYR on the playground, at centers, by having older children teach younger children, whilea child is on the changing table, etc. You can also incorporate them into your daily greetings. • Start where you are comfortable, and celebrate your successes. Remember that you can’t implement everything right away. Breathe, take it slowly, and tell yourself, “I’ve got this.” Important Links • ConsciousDiscipline.com (https://consciousdiscipline.com/) • Master Instructor Kim Hughes (https://consciousdiscipline.com/professional- development/instructors/kim-hughes/) • Free Resource: I Love You Rituals Teddy Bear Activity Board (https://consciousdiscipline.com/resources/i-love-you-rituals-teddy-bear-activity-board/) • Premium Resource: I Love You Rituals Choices Spinner (https://consciousdiscipline.com/resources/i-love-you-rituals-choices-spinner/) • Premium Resource: Choice Board-I Love You Rituals (https://consciousdiscipline.com/resources/choice-board-i-love-you-rituals/) Product Mentions • I Love You Rituals (book) (https://consciousdiscipline.com/product/i-love-you-rituals/) • I Love You Rituals Changing Table Set (https://consciousdiscipline.com/product/i-love-you- rituals-changing-table-poster-set/) • I Love You Rituals on a String (https://consciousdiscipline.com/product/i-love-you-rituals-on-a- string/) • Rituales Amorosos (book) (https://consciousdiscipline.com/product/rituales-amorosos/) • Greeting Apron (https://consciousdiscipline.com/product/greeting-apron/) Show Outline 0:20 What is Conscious Discipline? 1:28 Brain Smart Start 9:06 Relationship between powers, skills and structures 11:18 Introduction to I Love You Rituals 15:22 How to introduce I Love You Rituals in your classroom 16:58 When to teach I Love You Rituals 19:25 I Love You Rituals book (Family Night) 21:44 Where to start with I Love You Rituals 23:59 What’s Becky up to? 24:31 What’s Becky celebrating? As Kim mentions, they won't just go quietly into the night, they will step up their game to keep you in their grasp and believing their lies.Kim talks about the importance of paying attention to patterns, not words, in order to see a narcissist for who they truly are rather than what they've led you to believe.   “When you love yourself, other people will too. End of story.” Kimberly Seltzer (29:44 - 29:48) What you wear matters more than you think.  When you look in the mirror, do you love what you see? Or do you feel disappointed? Your response may have something to do with your wardrobe. Kimberly Seltzer is a strong believer that you are what you wear. The LA-based Style and Confidence Coach works with men and women to find the right textiles and patterns that build a wardrobe of confidence.  Her “outside-in” approach will have you toss out your comfy cocoon clothes and stock up on power outfits that attract success. Are you ready for a complete makeover? Let’s find your personal style so you radiate confidence everywhere you go.  “It doesn’t matter what size you are. It doesn’t matter what age you are. How you look on the outside boosts your confidence and makes you feel better.” - Diane Forster (10:30 - 10:41) After her divorce, Kim covered her curves in black and dismal materials. Any hint of color was out of the question. That was until a clothing department employee handed her a terrifying red dress that was two sizes too small.  Like Cinderella, Kim transformed before her very own eyes. She couldn’t believe how beautiful she was. As Kim marched out of that department store with her new dress in hand, she felt empowered and ready to take on the world.  That’s because when you look great, you feel great. So, how do you curate a wardrobe that builds confidence? Kim’s Three Cs Style Formula to build confidence:   Color. Incorporate more color into your wardrobe. Color is a powerful force of attraction for success, money, and love. Use tones that compliment your skin and beckon double-takes.     Cut. There are so many shapes and sizes of women. Some are tall and lean, others are short and curvy. None are the same, but they’re all beautiful. Find clothes that fit your body type right so you can feel your best.     Confidence Clothes. What are your go-to outfits? The ones you pull for dates and special occasions every time! What is it about those clothes that work for you? Once you’ve figured it out, go shopping for more in the same style.  “You don’t have to change who you are. You want to market yourself so that people can get to know who you are.” - Kimberly Seltzer (20:47 - 20:55) Style is an opportunity for others to get to know the real you. What you wear matters. But it’s less about the clothes and more about the attitude they inspire. This week, go to your closet armed with Kim’s “Three Cs Formula” as a guide. Pick articles of clothing that complement your figure and skin tone and align with your personality.  It’s time for the world to see who you are and what you’re all about.  Each week, we provide you with a mantra meditation, a fun, transformational way to apply the concepts in each episode. Tell yourself the story of what you want, without all of the limitations, and watch your life begin to change! Listen to this week’s mantra meditation to grow in self-love.  Letting go of the expectations of others, and growing in the confidence and love of who you are and all that you are capable of, is the only way to truly move forward in success and fulfillment. Today’s Topic: Network marketing Since we’re traveling around Europe for four months, we’re getting a lot of ‘it must be nice’ comments. But five years ago we were working twice as hard for half the money. We were living in a dark apartment and we were struggling to figure out what our future was. As Kim says, it’s not ‘must be nice’. It’s ‘we created this bitch’. A big portion of the income that is allowing us to travel is income that we’ve created in the world of network marketing. We're not trying to sell anybody on network marketing. If it's not for you, it's not for you. But this subject has come up a lot because of our travels so we thought we would dedicate this show to answering some commonly asked questions about network marketing.  How did we get started in network marketing? After we had our daughter, Sophia, Kim had planned to take six weeks off, then hire a nanny and go back to managing my chiropractic clinic. But as soon as I put Sophia in her arms she realized she didn’t want to do that. A lot of our friends had networking marketing businesses and were using it to create financial freedom or just extra income so Kim decided to try it for herself.  Kim just had somebody reach out and ask her, how could they really make sure they were successful in network marketing? And the answer is super simple. If you go half in, you're going to get a half result. If you go all in, you're going to get the total result. But you have to know that this is not a quick fix or an overnight success. Some of the beliefs and practices that have helped Kim be successful with network marketing are: Understanding It can be done - we had seen our friends be successful  Understanding that your ego is not your amigo - Kim knew she was starting at ground zero so she had to shut her pie hole and learn from the people that were successful Consistently showing up, even when you’re not making sales Understanding that it was going to take a long time to make a decent income If you have more questions about network marketing, DM Kim on Instagram. Today’s Topic: Building success, often over a long time, is the key to achievement. If you climb a mountain you begin at the bottom, right? Then when you reach the peak, you know you’ve earned it. You can reap the rewards. However, that can take time. Today Kim and I talk about the effort you need to make to start any entrepreneurial journey and to understand that you need to gradually build your platform for success. As Kim says, you need to pick the lane, the niche, that you want to be known for to start. Then branch out as necessary, move into associated areas. Kim says this isn’t always the case with people she sees, they tend to be scattered rather than focused. I talk about listening to your intuition. The story about the fire chief understanding when an evacuation is needed immediately is a case in point. It’s when something doesn’t feel right. We all have this and need to listen to it. It’s a survival mechanism. People often look at successful entrepreneurs and think if they copy them, they too will have success. What they don’t see is the often years of intuition built up through experience that someone needs to have to make those right decisions. It’s about the hard work that goes into building the success, climbing the mountain. Over time we developed deep relationships with people. I talk about the importance of not judging every moment, of letting it be. As Kim says, look at the wider view, the foundations that have been laid in a project for a successful future. So, don’t judge the moment, she adds. Trust your thought, trust your intuition. Keep going, don’t let fear stop you.  Sometimes the bigger the success, the longer the journey. Good luck! Sophia now wants to spend as much time with her Dad as her Mom, which wasn’t always the case. Sophia loves games, loves people. How I deal with the fact that my mornings and evenings aren’t my time/our time any longer. It’s family time. How the difficulty as an entrepreneur to not be able to use this time to flesh out ideas. This is difficult when there’s a child who demands attention. Switching from entrepreneur mode to Dad mode is, for me, difficult. Being female means doing this all day, says Kim. The pain and shame of your past, left unchecked, will quickly sabotage your perspective about who you are, your inherent worth, the hope and possibility of your life’s circumstances, and your closest relationships. But the way out of the pain and shame sometimes involves a deep-dive back into it; not to revisit every moment as if for the first time, but as a means to find truth, resolution, and peace, so that you can move forward. Too often, we don’t initially recognize that the scars of our past will tell a story of healing…if we let them do so. Kim Walker-Smith is a singer-songwriter, worship leader, and best known as the face of Jesus Culture, a global worship movement. For over fifteen years, she has played a major role in influencing worshipers and worship teams around the world toward their own pursuit of Jesus. Today, Kim is married, with three children, and passionate about helping other people forge their roadmap to wholeness from the inside out. But behind her public success and renown as the face of Jesus Culture, and behind the hope that she brings to millions of people around the globe, is a never-before heard story that was birthed from pain and trauma. And that’s the story you’re going to hear right now. Buy the Book Kim Walker Smith's passionate performance of "How He Loves" helped transform Jesus Culture into a global worship movement. Brave Surrender: Let God’s Love Rewrite Your Story is the story of how Kim journeyed from a place of shame and fear to stages around the world where she boldly proclaims the unconditional love of God. Through her own story, Kim inspires us to experience true freedom and healing with Jesus. Coming from a painful childhood, Kim struggled to believe that God could heal her heart or bring any sense from her past. Yet when faced with the choice to hand her struggles over to God and receive His love in return, everything began to change. On the other side of surrender, Kim began a journey of looking at one painful memory at a time with God and exchanging her perspective for His truth - a journey in which God rewrote her story of pain into a story of redemption and hope. If you are longing to experience God more than the shame or hurts of your past, the pressures of your present, or the fear of your future, Brave Surrender: Let God’s Love Rewrite Your Story offers a soul-healing path forward. As Kim learned in her own life, the first step - and the bravest step - is letting go. Once we let go of anything that gets between us and God, we are freed to take hold of the life that truly matters. As Kim writes, "When we encounter God's love, it changes the way we see. LTGL 012 Andy Imhoff Andy is host of Boost, Booze and BBQ and Pardon My Fork podcasts.Andy parted out a race car and had some money that needed an outlet. He had raced and even has trophies from doing that. He got tired of waiting for someone to contact him for an interview on a podcast and started his own. He did lots of research and found that “precious few items” would provide professional quality. He started in February of 2016. His most popular episodes were about food and it has grown from there. It keeps gaining attraction and followers and getting more popular all the time. When talking with people about food, it’s visceral. It’s so tied in centrally with our brains – sights, smells, touch, sounds – it’s all so integral. Food is ingrained in us because it is so vital to life. Most people congregate around where the food is. Sales tip – be near the food and you’ll be around the people. As Andy says, “Food for thought and knowledge for life!”He is hardest on himself. Most people are. “But it resonates so much with me. I thought it might be short term, I could sell my equipment and move on. And now I find I am shoulder deep in a journey to be more fully committed.” It’s time for me to do that. He was an 80 percenter. He is leaving that behind him now. No longer a status quo guy because it is a ridiculous self-fulfilling prophecy. Depression, crippling depression, was a part of his past. He could accomplish things but it stayed in his life. He wanted to be happy. Not for the sake of being happy, it just wasn’t enough. He felt accomplishments left a bitter taste in his mouth. This is why I am so drawn to food. It’s such an experience of touch and feel. For instance, fire allows me to step out of a crisis. As Kim said, it is a form of meditation. The smell, the sound, the heat of a wood fire brings back all the sensory and innate memories of this experience. Andy says that a great team building exercise is build a fire and cook a steak over it. Each person has their own steak. It is often done in corporate parking lots today.Kim tells us about an experience she and her husband had about cooking steaks at the end of sticks over the fire. Then they ate the steaks caveman style. It was a memorable bonding experience.Andy reminds us that about 60 years ago, people switched to indoor cooking. It was natural to cook outside over a wood fire.Andy was invited to a massive event and opportunity. His wife insisted that they go. She overrode his self-denial and they went to the WFC (World Food Champs) event. It was a fantastic event. They became the last minute sou chefs. It worked for them because they are super competitive. And his parent s had a restaurant. He relates a memory where he started the grill on fire. Someone was screaming, ”Fire. Fire” Instead of using a fire extinguisher, he leaned in and blew the fire out! Much to the chagrin of his eyebrows. We ended up with 3rd place in the competition. Usually first timers don’t do this well. We went to the final round and got 10th place. He explains the low placement being due to using a tortilla instead of a hamburger bun.His “inner ham” came out. He jumped in front of the camera every chance he got.For his show, he doesn’t do a lot of prep. He loves to explore the art of conversation. It makes for an organic conversation. Kim and Andy have fun, entertain and inspire. And shift perspectives.Conversations should be embraced and not avoided. Andy says that he has found that his food show has allowed people to seek out the people that know what they are doing and are hands on. Being an independent food journalist means a lot to Andy. If it’s important to Andy, it shows.Duck meat is one of the most underutilized proteins. It takes the smoke so well. Smoke it on the second rack in the smoker and capture the fat and the liquid runoff. It is amazing. Make your rice with it. Use the liquid and mix with milk – coconut milk, salt, pepper, chives, etc. It is so delicious. One recommendation is Duck Char. Their product is astounding. They sell the duck breasts. Kim Jong-un’s New Year’s address and fourth visit to Beijing quickly put Pyongyang back in the spotlight in 2019. His meeting with Xi Jinping also likely foreshadowed a meeting with President Trump in the near future. On this episode of the China in the World podcast, Paul Haenle spoke with Tong Zhao, a fellow at the Carnegie–Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, on the implications of Kim’s New Year’s address and meeting with Xi Jinping, as well as the outlook for North Korea’s relations with China and the United States in 2019. Zhao said Kim’s threats to take a “new path” if the U.S. does not lift sanctions does not mean a return to nuclear and missile tests. Instead, Pyongyang will likely strengthen ties with Beijing, departing from its focus on balancing relations between the United States and China. Zhao agreed with Haenle that the North Korea nuclear problem is not solved, as President Trump has claimed. North Korea appears committed to maintaining its intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear programs. The fundamental barrier preventing progress on denuclearization is that Pyongyang will not trust any U.S. security guarantees, as such commitments are reversible. Instead, Zhao pushed for a long-term process that builds trust and transforms the relationship from hostile to friendly. The Kim-Xi relationship is one of convenience, rather than actual friendship, Zhao said. As Kim prepares for a second summit with Trump, he is not confident he can secure sanctions relief and is more willing to cozy up to Beijing. However, building a long-term relationship with the United States remains Kim’s priority. Washington’s support is key to lifting UN sanctions that prevent the North Korean economy from developing quickly. Zhao said China supports a second meeting between Trump and Kim because there is real hope that it could lead to actual progress on a deal. However, if the meeting does not go well, China is likely to blame the United States for not accommodating North Korean demands, widening the gap between Washington and Beijing during a delicate period in the relationship. If the situation on the Korean Peninsula deteriorates, China might even accuse the United States of deliberately precipitating a crisis to advance its own interests in the region.

Durning the month of December, we’re revisiting some of our favorite, most informative shows. This is a rebroadcast of episode 248 featuring Kim Freeman who, with the help of her trained tracking cat Henry, helps find cats when they've gone missing – enjoy! Kim Freeman turned her lifelong love for cats into a career as a professional missing cat finder. When her own cat Mr. Purr went missing in 2008, Kim realized how little support families with a missing cat receive, and what bad advice they tend to be given. She set out to change this and today has developed a very specific process to help people all over the world find their missing cats. Kim starts by educating the cat’s owners using a downloadable online booklet and videos on her website. She then asks the owners to fill out an extensive cat profile questionnaire so that she can determine a search strategy. Kim tells us that there are eight probabilities of what could have happened to a missing cat, and her questionnaire, which asks about indoor behavior patterns, helps determine which of those probabilities is most likely. Based on the results of the questionnaire, Kim then coaches the owner on what they need to do to try to find their cat. When Kim does in-person searches, her cat Henry sometimes accompanies her. Henry is trained to track scent, and she often uses him in cases where an indoor-only cat has escaped outside. Kim knows of only one other trained search cat out there, but she believes that it is a great way to go, as search dogs are more likely to scare off a missing cat than find it. Kim is also passionate about the role shelters play in reuniting lost cats and their families. Nationally, the return to owner rate once a cat reaches a shelter is a dismal 2%. Kim feels shelters can help get this rate up by becoming a resource for the community around best practices for searching for a lost cat—or by directing the community to resources that can help. She believes strongly in Return to Field, and in microchipping as well. She would love to see shelters offer mobile, low-cost, in-home microchipping! Kim has a presentation on simple system that shelters can use to organize their lost and found data that she is glad to share if folks want to get in touch via her website. Finally, Kim would like to spread the word about the “litter box myth”—the idea that if your cat goes missing, you should put out her used kitty litter box to attract her back to the area. Not only does it not work, Kim tells us, it is actually a bad idea because it can attract wildlife and predators, as well as territorial bully cats who may chase your cat farther away. As Kim puts it, “your house smells more like home than a kitty litter box!” Learn more about Kim and her services at lostcatfinder.com. How good are schools at learning? Can they get better? As a culture, we worry a lot about student learning. But students don’t learn in a vacuum: Most are part of organizations (namely schools) that involve adults who also are engaged in learning, both individually and collectively. So what could help them learn? Here’s the one of the biggest quiet buzzwords in education: Networks. They can happen in any community—among educators, among schools or districts themselves and, of course, among students. And so emphasizing learning networks nudges educators to think about learning in different ways. Three recent books explore the power of learning networks. This past spring, EdSurge caught up with the authors at the Personalized Learning Summit sponsored by Education Elements. Ed Elements CEO Anthony Kim, who works with hundreds of educations throughout the US, wrote “The New School Rules: 6 Vital Practices for Thriving and Responsive Schools” with Alexis Gonzales-Black. As Kim worked with school leaders, he realized that what typically drives success or failure of efforts to improve school is not the educational approach but instead “the culture of our schools, organizational structures, and methods of communication and decision making.” He consequently identified what he sees as six “domains of school organization” and explores how schools can learn from one another in these areas. Lydia Dobyns, CEO of New Tech Network along with co-author and long-time education pundit, Tom Vander Ark, believe deeply that school systems need to learn collectively. In “Better Together: How to Leverage School Networks for Smarter Personalized and Project Based Learning,” they write: “Networks offer the best path to avoid every school attempting to reinvent the wheel.” Dobyns’ experience, both as an executive in the private sector and now as head of the New Tech Network, which involves about 200 schools across the US, takes readers through a tour of how schools can work together in both formal and informal networks to better support student learning. Julia Freeland Fisher, who directs education research at the Clayton Christensen Institute, similarly believes in the power of learning from peers but her focus is on students themselves. In “Who You Know: Unlocking Innovation that Expand Students’ Networks,” she writes about how students build their own networks of relationships. “Whom you know turns out to matter across all sorts of industries and institutions,” she writes. But by design, schools have wound up “limit[ing] their students’ access to people beyond their embroyic community.” This isn’t just about giving students access to social networks. Instead its about how educators can purposefully help students create relationships inside of schools that will widen their opportunities when they go beyond the school walls.

Now onto this week's encouraging episode! Today’s episode is extra special to me. I got to know Kim Fredrickson many years ago. Kim is one of the licensed therapists who taught a marriage class at our church in northern California. Steve and I were newly married at the time and learned so much from her. She was a real hero to me all those years ago. More recently, Kim and I reconnected through our literary agency on Facebook.  Kim’s new book, Give Your Kids a Break, has an interesting backstory. Most people write books to share with an unknown audience. Kim began writing this intentionally for her children and for her future grandchildren. It is the outpouring of all her 30+ years as a marriage and family therapist and her own parenting experiences — all written to pass on her wisdom and passion for building family unity when she is no longer around to do so herself. We all know our time on this earth is limited, however, Kim has an even greater sense of urgency after being diagnosed with a terminal lung disease. I’ll let her share more of that story on the show. This is a powerful episode! We’re going to talk about parenting and leaving a legacy. We’re going to laugh and cry. Please don’t miss this one. In fact, I ask that you share this episode with as many other families as you can. I also want to ask you to pray for a miracle for Kim! There is power in prayer. God is a God who can heal…even the impossible. So, what would you do if you were told you only had a few years to live? What kind of legacy would you try to leave behind for your family? Listen in and hear Kim’s perspective. On the show he explains all about what makes his festival unique. We talked about his mission and reason for creating the festival, and we talked about money. What it’s like to make money as a musician who composes, performs, and conducts, and his approach with musicians and the fees associated with attending this festival. The Next Festival is definitely a festival that considers musicians in that time when they're JUST finishing school and heading out into the real world... that time when you just need time to process the stuff you've learned in school and have some time to figure out what you'll do next.
