I felt like I found a kindred spirit in this interview! And not just because we both love cats!Dr. Laurie Dohmen, an herbalist and veterinarian, deeply loves valerian (Valeriana officinalis) just like I do. And she works with valerian in a very interesting way. For example, she shares how a valerian tea blend really saved the day when she had an extremely stressful experience after being robbed (and how valerian helped her to still show up for her patients). As a listener, you'll also have access to Dr. Dohmen's Calm but Focus Tea Blend, featuring valerian. There's also a free, downloadable and printable recipe card available just for you, which you can find in the resources section below.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► A valerian preparation you may want to experiment with (especially if valerian root typically isn't relaxing for you)► Why cats who love catnip also react to valerian► Why Dr. Dohmen favors whole-plant medicine► How plants respond differently to different people (Dr. Dohmen shares an inspiring story about being in relationship with stinging nettle)► Why intention matters when preparing herbal medicine► Lots of tips to help your cat live its longest and healthiest life (including an important thing to avoid to preserve your cat's long-term health)► and so much more…For those of you who don't already know her, Dr. Laurie Dohmen graduated from UPenn's Veterinary School. She is trained in Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Food Therapy, and Bach Flower Essences. She received her MS from MUIH. Dr. Dohmen lectures on Veterinary Herbal Medicine and other wholistic topics. We are in the midst of spring and the pollen is in the air. We are all thinking about our allergies at this time of year. Today, Lena DeGloma of Red Moon Wellness in Brooklyn joins us to discuss all things related to supporting your body, managing allergy symptoms, and what you can use as an alternative to over-the-counter and prescription drugs. The allergic symptoms are like the tip of an iceberg, where you have this cumulative effect. Even if you can identify that you are allergic to something, you may not necessarily be symptomatically allergic to that thing alone. There might be something under the surface that is causing that reaction. In an inflammatory state, it is easy for other things you do to cause a flare-up, even if it's not the item itself. Things like sleep, stress and the microbiome are so critical to keep functioning all year round because when we think about allergies. They have a cumulative effect. Then there is the threshold, which is like your symptom threshold. So many of us live just under the symptom threshold all year round with the food, stress, and environmental factors that are in our life every day. Herbalism is based on the connection between nature and the body. Many of the things our bodies need are created by plants. We can easily incorporate simple herbalism into our daily lives with chickweed, turmeric, and ginger. We also have great herbal medicine in our kitchens, things that will target allergies. Here are a few plants that could help with your allergies: CHAMOMILE Have your allergies affect your eyes. Itchy, red, irritated, watery eyes are so annoying. To relieve this symptom, grab those camomile tea bags you have in your cupboard. Steep them and let them cool. Put them right on your eyes, as little mini eye compresses. Also, drinking for inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.THYMEWe can also find dried thyme in our kitchens. For allergy symptoms, you can also inhale the essential oil mixed with eucalyptus if you have it. This helps with congestion. CALENDULAAdd a few drops of calendula oil that can help you find relief during an allergy flare. Using dried flowers, pop them into a jar and pour olive oil or coconut oil over the top to create your own oils. Add enough to cover all of the plant matter in the jar. Ideally, you want to have at least an inch of oil over the surface, so you don't have any exposed parts.Place it in a sunny window or a nice warm place. It will get infused with the warmth of the sun. Tip the head back and place one to three drops per nostril with the head tipped back. The drops will be dripping up into the nose and can also help if you get chronic sinus infections. I'll do the same for them. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by dryness, allergies, or by chronic fungi. MEET LENALena is the founder and director of Red Moon Wellness in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our genes influence not just the color of our eyes or our height, but also how we respond to things in our world: how we respond to the food we eat, the exercise we do, how we process trauma and stress. Understanding your genetics can equate to better self-knowledge because understanding your own blueprint gives you insight about who you are - and how you exist in the world. On this episode of the Funk’tional Nutrition Podcast, Erin sits down for a fascinating conversation with Yael Joffe, PhD, RD, FACN and dives deep into the facets of nutrigenomics, genetic testing, epigenetics and how we can apply this data not only to understand ourselves better, but also to better our health. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome encompasses a consortium of imbalances in the body that results in suffering from sensitivities to foods, chemicals, and environmental triggers. These sensitivities seem to be mediated by over release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators by mast cells. The consequences are vast including digestive, neurologic, immune, dermatologic, endocrine , musculoskelatal, and psychological impact. This episode brings in an expert in this area Dr. Jessica Pizano to help us understand this complex scenario that often gets missed clinically or misdiagnosed leaving people suffering with out answers. About our guest. Dr. Jessica Pizano graduated with honors from the University of Bridgeport's functional nutrition master's program. She continued her education at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) where she graduated with a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition. During her years in academia, she became very interested in working with those with rare diseases. The mantra for rare disease sufferers around the world is "When you hear hoof beats, think zebra's, not horses. This is, of course, the opposite of what has been taught in medical schools. Dr. Pizano is also the owner of Mast Cell Advanced Diagnostics where she sees patients with mast cell activation disorders and other rare diseases. The practice provides patients with a comprehensive approach to rare disorders incorporating nutrition, nutritional genomics, metabolomics, neural retraining, and medical management. Her goal is to provide a comprehensive care solution for patients helping bridge the gap in care that these patients typically face. Dr. Pizano works very closely with some of the top doctors treating mast cell activation syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, immunodeficiency disorders, familial alpha hypertryptasemia, and autoimmune small fiber polyneuropathy. In addition to seeing patients from around the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, she also frequently provides support to physicians working with these rare diseases via practitioner education and consults. In addition to the conditions listed above, Dr. Pizano has worked with multiple chemical sensitivities, Lyme disease, biotoxin illness, mood disorders, autism, autoimmune diseases, rare genetic deletions, mitochondrial disorders and other diseases. Along with her business partner Dr. Chrissie Williamson, Dr. Pizano is the co-owner of SNPed, a webinar-based series to educate practitioners in nutritional genomics and systems medicine. She has developed course work at the master's level at MUIH in nutritional genomic counseling, has published a series of peer-reviewed journal articles on the microbiome and contributed two chapters on nutritional genomics in a graduate level nutrition textbook. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adam-rinde/support

As defined by Leo Kanner back in 1943, children with autism have an innate inability to form the usual biologically provided affective contact with people. He suggested that individuals with autism have difficulty reacting to the input of new stimuli encountered on a daily basis and that they live in a world of sameness and aloneness, which if disturbed, causes them to fall into a major panic that does not cease until removal of the perturbation agent. These days, it is well known that a dysfunction of the GABAnergic signaling early in a child's development leads to a server excitation/inhibition imbalance in neuronal circuits, which may be responsible for some of the behavioral deficits observed in individuals on the autism disorder spectrum. Today Kim and Tonya discuss the benefits of yoga therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder as Kim shares her personal experience working with ASD clients and on on her 2017 research proposal on the topic presented at the annual MUIH research symposium and a recent Symposium for Yoga Research (SYR) at Kripalu. ASD is associated with behavioral deficits and anxiety. Increasing tolerance in reacting to and managing the input of new stimuli encountered daily are essential components to improve function in everyday life. Abnormal sensory processing deficits may contribute to the lack of socialization and connection with others and is proposed to have correlated with low vagal tone. Yoga interventions have been found to help with vagal tone, anxiety, in ASD and to have benefits in self-regulation for Psychological health. However, no studies have addressed yoga’s effects on tolerance, resilience, regulation of sensory processing, socialization and connection in those with ASD.
