Max Trescott teams up with Tom Turner—executive director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation—to help listener Marc Brodecki weigh options for earning his private pilot certificate. Marc, a 39-year-old aerospace engineer in Los Angeles with glider experience, is evaluating three flight training options: a nearby tailwheel-focused school (that includes a Stearman), a larger flight school at Torrance using Sling aircraft, or buying and learning in the Beechcraft Bonanza he eventually wants to own. Tom provides extensive guidance on Bonanza ownership. He discusses which Bonanza models (S-35 or early V-35) fit Marc's $100–$150k budget and breaks down the real-world operating costs—including fuel, maintenance, insurance, tie-downs, and the potential for large, deferred maintenance costs. He stresses that insurance for student pilots in complex aircraft like Bonanzas can be a barrier and suggests checking with brokers early. Max adds that avionics upgrades are costly and advises finding an aircraft that already has the equipment you need. Tom and Max both support training in a Bonanza—if done right. Benefits include gaining type-specific proficiency, leading to greater safety and a stronger insurance profile. However, they caution that older Bonanzas may lack dual controls and copilot brakes, which are required for instruction and checkrides. Installing these features can be expensive and difficult, making them a potential dealbreaker. Max recommends looking for experienced Bonanza instructors, such as those certified through ABS's Flight Instructor Academy. Marc also asks about learning in tailwheel aircraft and transitioning later to a Bonanza. Tom says that's a viable and fun route—especially if the nearby school makes frequent training easy. Both guests emphasize that the convenience of the training location often matters more than the training aircraft. Flying regularly helps students retain skills and progress faster. The discussion also touches on partnerships to reduce ownership costs, the hidden expenses of ownership (like California's use tax), and how to vet good instructors. Max compares the CFI relationship to psychotherapy—it must be built on trust. A red flag is any instructor who pretends to know everything rather than admitting when they need to look something up. As for timing, both Tom and Max encourage Marc to begin instrument training soon after earning his private certificate. In cloud-prone California, that rating increases safety and utility, and the sooner it's earned, the easier the transition. To wrap up, Max reminds Marc not to get stuck in “analysis paralysis.” While his engineering mindset may drive him to seek the perfect solution, the key is choosing a path that's good enough and lets him start flying soon—and enjoy the journey. Max discusses engine-out scenarios and best glide strategies, prompted by listener feedback on Episode 372, which analyzed the crash of a Bonanza B35B (N2UZ) that suffered engine failure at 7,500 feet near Charlottesville, VA. Although the pilot did many things correctly, he overshot a long field and crashed. Max highlights choices that might have improved the outcome, such as flight following and alternate route planning. Listener emails, read by Aviation News Talk intern Kelly, offer insights and experiences. Karen Larson shares how a conversation about the episode helped her husband safely land a T6 with a failed engine. David Dismore and Nico Ghilardi emphasize the value of practicing power-off landings, especially from high altitudes. Daniel Switkin points out that glide range rings in EFB apps may not always be reliable, referencing an AOPA test. Carter Boswell inquires about glide differences between windmilling and stopped props. Max references Peter Garrison and Tom Turner for technical insight. Bozzie Boswell from Australia introduces the AvPlan EFB app, which offers planning features to keep routes within gliding range of airports. Max underscores the importance of preparation, practice, and situational awareness to improve survival chances during engine-out emergencies. For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to returning guest, the crime writer Denzil Meyrick to hear all about the latest novel in the Inspector Frank Grasby series, The Christmas Stocking Murders. An appearance by Denzil on the podcast has quickly become a sign that Christmas is on the way, and it was great to catch up with him and hear about what Frank Grasby and friends, and enemies, are up to this time around. Denzil gives a synopsis of The Christmas Stocking Murders, before talking about returning to 1950s Yorkshire, the appeal of coastal settings, how Frank's world has changed, and what he has learned, since events in the previous novel Murder at Holly House, introducing the memorable character of Superintendent Juggers, and the effect World War II has on everyone who appears in the series. He also gives updates on all things DCI Daley, which include a new novel and the promised TV series. As always, a chat with Denzil just flies by, and it's always a pleasure to talk crime fiction with one of the best. And once the conversation is over, keep listening as Denzil's publishers Transworld, Penguin Random House, have kindly allowed us to play a clip from the audiobook of The Christmas Stocking Murders, narrated by Tom Turner. Our final show of the season! This week, we talk frankly about author leverage--what it means, and how to use it. We also discuss when and how to pitch new books on proposal, the impact of past sales on that process, and why Scott is (probably) walking away from writing trad fantasy as a result. Other topics: we reflect on regrets and highlights across the past year, do a quick summary of where we are, why we've slowed down, and what's going on, AND our plans for Season 2 (there will be one!) and how it will be different from Season 1. Finally, Scott introduces a new shiny thing we've been working on: the Author Data Project, an adult-fiction version of the YA research that Dr. Kerry Pray conducted and discussed in an earlier episode. For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to returning guest, the writer Denzil Meyrick. Denzil has a new novel 'Murder at Holly House' out, published on the Bantam Press imprint of Transworld Publishers. It's been described by some as 'cosy crime' (although, as the two discuss, that term is an inadequate description) and is a departure from Denzil's more hard-nosed thrillers, and it was fascinating to talk to him about this change of styles, and The two also talk about the future of DCI Daley (including the move to TV), the various influences on 'Murder at Holly House', creating the central character of Frank Grasby, setting the action in Yorkshire - and in the 1950s - his Kinloch novellas (now collected in paperback with Polygon Books), and the exciting news about what's coming next. It's always a pleasure to catch up with Denzil Meyrick, one of the finest writers around, and we hope you enjoy listening as much as we did talking. And keep listening to the very end as there's a bonus clip from the audiobook of 'Murder at Holly House', which is narrated by Tom Turner - with thanks to publishers Transworld for providing it. Summary 268 Max talks with Tom Turner about how to troubleshoot a partial or total engine failure in flight. Every engine is going to be a little different, but there are generic steps for troubleshooting any partial or complete engine failure. All piston engines need fuel, air, and a source of ignition, so you need to check each of these items. For fuel, switch tanks, turn on any auxiliary fuel pumps, and adjust the mixture. If you have carb heat and a manual alternate air system, try applying these. For ignition, try different positions on the mag switch to see if that helps. The mixture on turbocharged engines is handled differently. In all cases, you should refer to the engine failure in flight checklist for your aircraft. Summary 262 Max talks with Tom Turner about an ATSB study showing that partial power loss is 3X more likely than complete engine failure. It also shows that that serious injury or death occurred more frequently in partial power loss versus complete engine failures. With full power or no power, pilots know what to do. Join NAFI: www.nafinet.org Everyone thinks they are a safe pilot. Yet pilots continue to crash airplanes, for the same reasons again and again and again. As instructors, we're not consistent in how we teach pilots to maximize their chances of an accident-free lifetime of flying. A shift in the way we teach safety concepts can make a huge difference in accident rates. Safety isn't a strategy, it is an outcome. It is the result of developing and maintaining mastery and command of the airplane, the environment and yourself. This presentation goes far beyond telling pilots what not to do to avoid mishaps; it inspires positive motivation and provides specific techniques and ideas you can teach your students to use on every flight, so they can develop mastery and command for a lifetime of flying. Today's episode takes us to sunny Florida where I chat with mystery, thriller, crime writer, and my friend, Tom Turner. A native New Englander, Tom Turner dropped out of college and ran a Vermont bar. Limping back a few years later to get his sheepskin, he went on to become an advertising copywriter, first in Boston, then New York. After 10 years of post-Mad Men life, he made both a career and geography change and ended up in Palm Beach, renovating houses and collecting raw materials for his novels. After stints in Charleston, then Skidaway Island, outside of Savannah, Tom recently moved to Delray Beach, where he's busy writing about passion and murder among his neighbors... There is a very fully illustrated version of this podcast on YouTube. Edward Hutchison is a London artist, landscape architect, architect and author of a very popular book on Landscape Drawing (published by Thames and Hudson). In this podcast he talks to Tom Turner about his work and about how he sees the relationship between art, painting and landscape architecture. He sees drawing and painting as analytical tools which help the landscape architecture understand the nature of the world and the place which will be designed. Edward also paints what happens below the ground and above the ground - the world of soil and the world of birdsong (which will be the theme of his next exhibition, in London in 2022). The podcast features a project he did, in Nimes, France, with Norman Foster (for whom he worked at one time).
Here's a summary of what came out of the LANDSCAPEmatters debate on environmental art and landscape architecture (held by LANDSCAPEmatters on 15th June 2021) with a comment on the historical context for the issues (in the design theory of Vitruvius Pollio, whose book was published 2000 years ago). If you'd prefer an illustrated version of this podcast, you can find it on YouTube

"Environmental Art" can be seen to have originated in the early 20th century, with Picasso, collage, Duchamp, readymade artworks, Cubism and Minimalism. Or it can be seen to derive from the ancient world, including the Pyramids, Stonehenge and many projects in the history of landscape architecture and garden design. Asking "what is the difference between Environmental Art and Landscape Architecture" this video sets the scene for a debate, using art projects by Charles Jencks (for Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art) and Tom Turner (for a Sea and Sand Mandala) as debating points.
Landscape architecture is a very good job and a very satisfying career. The work is creative, exciting and a great way to solve environmental problems and contribute to the mitigation of climate change. See illustrated version of this podcast on YouTube. It was made for people thinking about a career in landscape architecture AND for professionals who would like to expand the scope and work of landscape architects. As an art, landscape design can be traced back 30,000 years. You work with nature, with local communities and with the other environmental design professions, including architects, engineers, horticulturalists, hydrologists and scientists. The documented history of landscape design theory dates back 2000 years, to Vitruvius. It became an organised profession with the work of Frederick Law Olmsted on Central Park in New York City in the 1860s. As societies become richer the demand for landscape architects goes up. Tom Turner makes these points and sees the design approach known as landscape urbanism as the direction landscape architecture design methods are likely to develop.
