Today's episode is a guided oatstraw meditation with Robin Rose Bennett. This meditation is also available on our YouTube channel. WATCH HERE A note from Robin Rose Hi, Robin Rose Bennett here, storyteller, herbalist and green witch. I'm blessed to live on the edge of 3,000 acres of protected state forest in northern NJ. And to have been working with, teaching about, and learning from the plants and other plant people for over thirty years. I've learned that herbs are uniquely gifted in helping us heal body, mind, heart and soul. As we attune to their spiritual teachings, they help us deepen our relationships with ourselves, each other and the web of life. And it is a delight and honor to be part of the HerbRally community! When Mason invited me to contribute, I sat down in my medicine wheel and recorded this video as my first offering. I hope you enjoy this meditation with Avena sativa (Oatstraw) where I invite you to put down tiny roots and move like the plant, to have an experience of freedom, fluidity and earth connection. This meditation is also available in her classic herbal "The Gift of Healing Herbs". BUY THE BOOK Robin Rose Bennett is a story-teller, writer, and herbalist. The medicinal blessings of the plant people begin with their more obvious physical gifts. When we are in need of those gifts, we are surely grateful to have access to them, whether comfrey is being applied as a poultice to help heal a sprained ankle, or someone is sipping a cup of rosemary tea to prevent or soothe a migraine headache. But plant medicine runs deeper than physical constituents; plants are more than the sum of their visible parts, they are multi-dimensional, and their spiritual medicine is revealed within and just underneath their physical attributes. In this conversation, we'll explore ways to see and access the metaphorical, spiritual magic of common plants and trees as well as ways to connect with these gifts in a grounded way. As we learn to embody the teachings of the plants we become empowered to offer ever more joyful service at this pivotal time in our world.Robin Rose Bennett is a story-teller, writer, and herbalist. As a backpacking guide and wilderness therapist in Oregon’s Mount Hood area, Melissa Mutterspaugh, AKA Mountain Mel, was almost horrified when the group would stop and people would pull out artificial snacks in the middle of a perfectly natural environment. The experience gave her the motivation and mission to create natural foods and food products to replace the “toxic” ones they were using. A clinical herbalist, Melissa has a use for most of nature’s plants. Take nettles, for instance. They sting, trust me, but Melissa will tell you that you can pick the top of the leaves with your bare hands, and if you chew the leaves from the top, the small hairs on the bottom side will crumble and you won’t be stung by them. And if you have chronic pain from some old injury, you can rub the underside of the leaf – the stinging side – and after you endure an hour or so of discomfort, you’ll find your chronic pain may be gone! Her clinical background was achieved by attending the Elderberry Botanical Studies school in Portland, Oregon where she learned the chemical properties of plants and how to harvest. Feeling the background was helpful but a little “hippie dippie”, Melissa wanted to know more about the human body and the mechanics of interacting with the beneficial elements of plants. She next attended Portland School of Traditional Herbalism, where she heard from some of the best herbalists around how natural elements dance with the human body to help heal itself. Mountain Mel’s herbal products include herbal teas, body and lip balms, hand sanitizers and special tea blends for mothers and expectant mothers. They are available online and at certain Oregon stores currently. Christopher Vane co-founded Little Bear Sanctuary, a nonprofit farm animal sanctuary in Punta Gorda, FL, in honor of his late mother Ursula (which translates to “little bear” in Latin). They shared a common passion for animals and Ursula often dreamed of providing neglected, once-abused animals a safe haven. While originally from New York, Chris surprisingly started off with a career in human healthcare, eventually landing in Florida working as a real estate broker. When he met Randy, everything changed…for the better, that is! Their relationship sparked a new passion to live each day with purpose. After they got married, their desire to provide a better world for farm animals was greatly amplified. Together, Chris and Randy followed through on Ursula’s dream and established the Little Bear Sanctuary in 2017. Now, 160+ rescued farm animals call Little Bear Sanctuary home, and – thanks to Christopher’s compassion and dedication – each animal has been given an opportunity to experience love and freedom.Little Bear Sanctuary provides a permanent home for farm animals that have been abandoned or can no longer be cared for by the owner in order to allow them to live out the remainder of their lives in a cruelty free environment. We are committed not only to a vegan lifestyle but the much needed education of pigs as pets. Our animals are never kept in cages or pens and are free to roam in their natural habitat.https://littlebearsanctuary.orghttps://www.facebook.com/littlebearsanctuaryhttps://www.patreon.com/littlebearsanctuaryAdd us to your Amazon Smile account: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/82-2180440Special Guest: Steve SietosGrowing up in Denver, Stavros always wanted a dog but never got one.He made his way to New York City thanks to his younger brother and fell in love with the lifestyle of the city. Professionally, Stavros went towards a career in EMS and then as a firefighter. ( from 2005-2017)Eventually, his lifelong wish of having a dog came true in expected fashion when a dog showed up at his fire station. The dog, Wilma, was sick. Stavros decided to take charge and try to heal her on his own, even though he was told she wouldn’t survive. He became a herbalist, quit being a firefighter, and dedicated himself to learning about how different herbs could help Wilma and animals in general. He figured it out, healed Wilma, and along the way he found that Wilma healed him in a similar way. She taught him how to love himself, how to love others, and live your life in the right mindset. When Stavros would be depressed or dramatic or in a bad mood, Wilma would not engage with him until he was being more positive and in a good headspace. This helped Stavros realize how he was looking at what was happening to him and the world around him.Throughout this process, his passion for educating himself on herbs and how we can heal our animals and ourselves took hold and has become Stavros’ passion and craft in life, another one of the gifts that Wilma has led him to discover and embed in his life. “She aligned me with my true path,” Stavros says. He now works with other people and their pets as well.Steve started formal training in herbalism in 2010 at the Green Medicine with well known healer and herbalist Peeka Trenkle. He studied clinical herbalism Program at the Brooklyn Commons in 2012. And from 2013-2015 at the Arbor Vitae School of Traditional Herbalism professional herbalist program.Because of the love for his beautiful canine companion Wilma, he became specialized in the herbal treatment and healing modalities of cancer in dogs.Email: urbanherbalistnyc@gmail.com

THIS WEEK ON WHAT’S THE JUICE PODCAST Unless you’re new here, you’ve most likely heard me gush about my experience at ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism. Now, I haven’t always been a total herb nerd. This interest of mine was first ignited when I started buying supplements on Amazon and it quickly spiraled into a full-blown passion that just won’t quit! A few years ago I followed my gut to ArborVitae and I can say with 100% certainty that it was the right choice for me. I’ve learned SO much since I first started my program and it’s all thanks to my incredible, inspiring, brilliant teachers. This episode of What’s The Juice is a super special one for me because I get to introduce you to someone I’ve mentioned many times before: Richard Mandelbaum. Richard and Claudia Keel founded ArborVitae, and they’re the quintessential yin and yang team. In herbalism speak, where Claudia is the flower essence, Richard is the spleen qi... and they are both major herbalist GOALS. Richard’s classes are full of Chinese Medicine (be still my heart), and he’s always encouraging his students to look at human health in a balanced way. He’s a Leo — so it’s no wonder that I resonate with him — but it’s his Aquarius moon AND Aquarius rising that make him such an innovator. Not only did he co-found an herbalism school in New York City, he’s also playing a vital role in shifting the way modern medicine approaches Lyme disease. Ready to get schooled by Richard Mandelbaum? When choosing herbs for a health issue, herbalists like us use a system of organization called energetics. In this week’s podcast, we have an excerpt from our Energetics & Holistic Practice course about a key component of herbal energetics: tissue states. This term refers to the quality and activity present in a given organ or tissue of the body, and is based on three pairs of opposites: hot & cold, damp & dry, tense & lax. When we have an injury or dysfunction somewhere in the body, herbalists ask: How much heat (or metabolic activity) is present in the area? How much moisture is flowing through (or stuck within) the tissue? How tight or loose is the organ, or muscle? These fundamental qualities are what help us match herbs to health problems more precisely – hot states call for cooling herbs, tense states need relaxing herbs, and so on. Learning to identify these states, and learning which herbs counterbalance which states, is an important part of your herbal education. In these excerpts, we discuss each of the six primary tissue states, teaching you how to recognize them and how to understand what those observations mean. We also talk about the way these states can change from one into another, because in real life they’re moving targets – they change and shift as time passes. Knowing a bit about how one state is most likely to evolve into another makes you even better able to help with the right remedy at the right time.If you’d like to get deeper into herbal energetics – going into details like individual constitutional types and herbal actions – then you should consider the complete course: Energetics & Holistic PracticeSupport the show (https://commonwealthherbs.com/supporters/)
