This week's Plant Stories episode features the marine herbalist, purveyor of seaweeds, and founder of Mermaid Botanicals, Kristy Bredin. With a passion for exploration, wildcrafting, and utilizing the medicinal plants of the Pacific Northwest, Kristy found herself drawn to the eldest marine ancestors of all botanicals we know today, seaweeds! We sit down with Kristy and learn about her journey that began through apprenticeships with wise herbalists who embarked her on her journey into the vast ocean of herbalism, wildcrafting, and seaweed activism. Kristy shares with us her profound knowledge of the ancient history of seaweeds, responsible seaweed harvesting practices, utilizing seaweeds as plant medicine, and even her recipe for kelp pickles! As always, we truly hope you enjoy today's Herbal Radio episode, thank you for tagging along with us for this marine botanical adventure! Kristy Bredin began her journey as an herbalist in 2009, when she began a two-year apprenticeship with herbalist Robin Rose Bennett in New York. Over the years she has studied clinical herbalism with Chanchal Cabrera, Paul Bergner, Matthew Wood, and Margi Flint. For the last decade, she has worked with Ryan Drum, wildcrafting medicinal herbs and cultivating an in-depth knowledge of traditional Western herbalism and local plants and seaweeds. Since 2013 she has been sharing plant remedies of the Pacific Northwest through Mermaid Botanicals. Mermaid Botanicals now encompasses Ryan Drum's Island Herbs since he retired from wildcrafting in 2019. Kristy is passionate about exploring the natural world and working with wild plants in ancient and creative ways. She supports folks in re-engaging and integrating with their natural environment through wild plant medicine work. She currently offers classes locally and internationally on seaweeds, wild plants, and healing with herbs and is working on a book about seaweeds for health and healing: Marine Herbalism, to be published in 2029. Learn more about Mermaid Botanicals here! Click here to preorder a copy of Kristy's book, Marine Herbalism! Visit Kristy's Seaweed Resource Page here! Important – If you are interested in harvesting your own seaweeds, be sure to check the fish and wildlife regulations, limits, and permitting for recreational harvesting within your local area. And beginning to connect with that inner knowing, the place inside you that whispers that you are more than just a cog in the wheel of societal expectations, can take time. But my guess is that, if you're here and reading this, you've already gotten a glimpse into this reality, and have begun relating with the plants, the earth or your body in a way that helps you feel more whole and connected. That said, it's a process. And often feels a bit like a spiral, doesn't it?In this week's episode, writer, herbalist and green witch Robin Rose Bennett brings together 35+ years of herbalism and a deep reverence for the magic of life itself to offer a generous dose of the wisdom she's gathered over time. She shares about her own spiral of growth and becoming, her personal womb story throughout all of her phases, and what it can mean to be an elder in the world. And she brings the plants in, too. Today's episode is a guided oatstraw meditation with Robin Rose Bennett. This meditation is also available on our YouTube channel. WATCH HERE A note from Robin Rose Hi, Robin Rose Bennett here, storyteller, herbalist and green witch. I'm blessed to live on the edge of 3,000 acres of protected state forest in northern NJ. And to have been working with, teaching about, and learning from the plants and other plant people for over thirty years. I've learned that herbs are uniquely gifted in helping us heal body, mind, heart and soul. As we attune to their spiritual teachings, they help us deepen our relationships with ourselves, each other and the web of life. And it is a delight and honor to be part of the HerbRally community! When Mason invited me to contribute, I sat down in my medicine wheel and recorded this video as my first offering. I hope you enjoy this meditation with Avena sativa (Oatstraw) where I invite you to put down tiny roots and move like the plant, to have an experience of freedom, fluidity and earth connection. This meditation is also available in her classic herbal "The Gift of Healing Herbs". BUY THE BOOK Robin Rose Bennett is a story-teller, writer, and herbalist. The medicinal blessings of the plant people begin with their more obvious physical gifts. When we are in need of those gifts, we are surely grateful to have access to them, whether comfrey is being applied as a poultice to help heal a sprained ankle, or someone is sipping a cup of rosemary tea to prevent or soothe a migraine headache. But plant medicine runs deeper than physical constituents; plants are more than the sum of their visible parts, they are multi-dimensional, and their spiritual medicine is revealed within and just underneath their physical attributes. In this conversation, we'll explore ways to see and access the metaphorical, spiritual magic of common plants and trees as well as ways to connect with these gifts in a grounded way. As we learn to embody the teachings of the plants we become empowered to offer ever more joyful service at this pivotal time in our world.Robin Rose Bennett is a story-teller, writer, and herbalist. She has been offering classes in Wisewoman Healing Ways: Herbal Medicine and EarthSpirit Teachings since 1986 - at herb conferences, festivals, clinics, medical and nursing schools, and most joyously, outside with the plants. Radio show pre-recorded, (because Caroline is journeying out to a gathering of activists, then convening Post-Election woof woof Town Hall on Tuesday, November 15th 7pm at Open Secret in San Rafael, CA) with guest herbalist, author, and teacher Robin Rose Bennett, author of “Healing Magic” and “The Gift of Healing Herbs,” our mild recovery re-combobulating show, with recipes for moving towards woofy sanity… And here be Michael Moore's recipe: Morning After To-Do List: Take over the Democratic Party and return it to the people. They have failed us miserably. Fire all pundits, predictors, pollsters and anyone else in the media who had a narrative they wouldn't let go of and refused to listen to or acknowledge what was really going on. Those same bloviators will now tell us we must “heal the divide” and “come together.” They will pull more hooey like that out of their ass in the days to come. Turn them off. Any Democratic member of Congress who didn't wake up this morning ready to fight, resist and obstruct in the way Republicans did against President Obama every day for eight full years must step out of the way and let those of us who know the score lead the way in stopping the meanness and the madness that's about to begin. Everyone must stop saying they are “stunned” and “shocked”. What you mean to say is that you were in a bubble and weren't paying attention to your fellow Americans and their despair. YEARS of being neglected by both parties, the anger and the need for revenge against the system only grew. Along came a TV star they liked whose plan was to destroy both parties and tell them all “You're fired!” Trump's victory is no surprise. He was never a joke. Treating him as one only strengthened him. He is both a creature and a creation of the media and the media will never own that. You must say this sentence to everyone you meet today: “HILLARY CLINTON WON THE POPULAR VOTE!” The MAJORITY of our fellow Americans preferred Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Period. Fact. If you woke up this morning thinking you live in an effed-up country, you don't. The majority of your fellow Americans wanted Hillary, not Trump. The only reason he's president is because of an arcane, insane 18th-century idea called the Electoral College. Until we change that, we'll continue to have presidents we didn't elect and didn't want. You live in a country where a majority of its citizens have said they believe there's climate change, they believe women should be paid the same as men, they want a debt-free college education, they don't want us invading countries, they want a raise in the minimum wage and they want a single-payer true universal health care system. None of that has changed. We live in a country where the majority agree with the “liberal” position. We just lack the liberal leadership to make that happen (see: #1 above). Let's try to get this all done by noon today. — Michael Moore Next week's show – full on Woof with Ben Boyce – to amplify Michael Moore's woof on our strategy for now. ****************************************************** Caroline is convening Post-Election woof woof Town Hall Tuesday, November 15th 7 pm Open Secret San Rafael, CA $20 Details to be posted on CoyoteNetworkNews.com The post The Visionary Activist Show – Recovery Re-Combobulating Show appeared first on KPFA.
