J-Pop for some of us forms the sonic background to our lives in Japan - AKB48, Arashi, SMAP, Greeen (and just like that, you can already guess my vintage). My guest Juvia Chua went further than belting out her favourite J-Pop tunes in karaoke - she worked as a coordinator in the Japanese music industry, travelling with anisong talent overseas. She gives us a look at the hard work behind the stage, what she had to learn and how she did it. If you're wondering what it's like, then this is the episode for you. In celebration of All The Best reaching 500 episodes, we're looking back into the archives and replaying episodes that, while recorded in years past, remain relevant today. This week an episode that aired in 2018, ‘Work In Progress'. This week much of the country observed the Labour Day public holiday. Also known as May Day, Labour Day was created to celebrate the achievements of the labour union movement and the evolution of worker's rights. This episode, characterising the worker experience from a couple of viewpoints, felt like a perfect choice. Today workers across the country are still taking important industrial action against things like wages not increasing with inflation and the rising cost of living. Standing in solidarity with the Labour Union movement is still as important as it was when Labour Day was first celebrated. ***************** As we get to work, you'll hear about our previous work experience and our ability to remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment. ‘Dodgy Jobs' by Angela Moran When Sarah arrived in Melbourne from Belgium on a working holiday visa she was told it would be easy to find a good part time job. Instead she found a thriving environment of underpaying cash-in-hand jobs with little to no security. Lucky she's got a good sense of humour and was willing to share a few stories from her unsuccessful attempts to earn a decent crust. On this episode, Lera and Sergio speak with Douglas Selvage at the Humboldt University of Berlin about his research on the disinformation cooperation between KGB and STASI during the Cold War and specifically the work of Operation "Denver" in the 1980s. Dr. Selvage talks of how these same Cold War propaganda tactics are nearly verbatim recycled today in Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine. For his recent article, as mentioned in this episode, visit: https://www.wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/moscow-bioweapons-and-ukraine-cold-war-active-measures-putins-war-propaganda. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/02/binary-system-podcast-303-wtnv-202-the-day-after-the-day-and-raised-by-wolves/ In addition to being a very poetic episode about how human beings process trauma and time, this week's episode of Welcome To Night Vale is also topical. I mean really topical, touching on current events that everyone in the world is following right now. And by that, I of course mean Wordle. If you're looking for a hint, today's answer has a silent "y" and no umlauts. You're welcome. Meanwhile Elizabeth has watched four Season Two episodes of Raised By Wolves, but Kathryn's only watched one. So, you know, spoilers for just that one episode as we talk about the fact that Mother and Father don't have pockets, and wonder who the heck scouted Kepler 22-b and decided that a planet with acid seas, gigantic holes to the core, and radioactive vegetables was somehow a good spot to revive the human race. This week's outro is a clip from Wave of the Synth by Uncan. The We Were All Raised By Wolves podcast has some very insightful comments on season one. The intro to the episode 10 recap really seems to imply that the host, Peter, has passed away, but there's recent activity on his reddit account? So we have no idea, but we hope for the best. Correction: After review by an expert on history (ie: someone with more knowledge than us)(ie: Nathan), it turns out that there wasn't a vaccine for the Spanish Flu, since at the time scientists were still looking for a bacterial cause instead of a virus. There WAS a vaccine for smallpox, and that's what inspired some of the political cartoons about the dangers of anti-vax sentiment, like the one scanned from the 1930's booklet Health In Pictures.
