The Takeaway “SEL has five major components: self-awareness, self management, social management – the skills we use to manage relationships — and responsible decision making. There used to be this notion that you had your cognition — your rational side, your frontal brain — and you had your emotional side — you're limbic system — and they just fought for each other for dominance over decisions. But we now know that's not the case. Your emotions are deeply entwined with what you're paying attention to, how you're encoding information and memories. And your cognition is deeply entwined with how you're processing your emotions. And so this idea of the integration of social and emotional, and academic development is not just a catchphrase, it's really reflective of how we grow as human beings, incorporating and taking in cognition, emotion, as well as trying to solve problems.” — David Adams Our guest David Adams is the CEO of The Urban Assembly. He started with the UA in 2014 as the Director of Social-Emotional Learning. In 2021, David received the Champion of Equity Award from the American Consortium for Equity in Education. David sits on the board of CASEL and is an author of The Educator's Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence, and a co-author of the textbook, Challenges to Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs in Organizations. He is a Civil Affairs Officer in the Army Reserve and holds an M.Ed in Educational Psychology from Fordham University. As you listen Given COVID and the trauma that many students carry, how can we best help to heal them? What is social-emotional learning (SEL) and how is it used to support students? What makes human interactions so critical, and why are students having difficulty establishing relationships after COVID-19? How are academics and emotion intertwined to benefit students? How do SEL skills help the school community? From that point, David and I both agreed that dialogue at that level is ever-evolving, because in any relationship … between individuals, within a community, or between different cultures … people are always changing, circumstances are always changing, and so there is always more to learn from and with each other. From there we focused on how the group of 23 schools over which he presides works to bring the most meaningful and enriching education to underserved youth. These schools would be any parents' dream for their children's development, not only because they nurture individual skills and even hidden talents, but because they are doing the active work of prioritizing social emotional learning for every person within each school's community. We talked about the challenges, specifically the challenges caused by this country's long history and undeniable patterns of racial injustice, that gave rise to the powerful solutions manifesting everyday at the Urban Assembly schools. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/onewhiteteacher/message

In today's episode, I share conversation with David Adams, CEO of Urban Assembly, and definitely a BIG PICTURE kind of educator. In this conversation, David explains the how's and why's of Urban Assembly's approach to building schools' cultures, which are 100% centered on developing students' social emotional competencies for success in school, and for success in their future careers, and for success in their personal lives' moving forward. In other words, everything is connected, and Urban Assembly schools work with, and through, that fact of life…. which might, at first, look like more work for teachers, but give it time… and listen up… by the end of this one hour conversation, you'll understand why it actually means less work for teachers of all grade levels… K-12. In 2021, David received the Champion of Equity Award from the American Consortium for Equity in Education. David sits on the board of CASEL which, as I'm sure you know, stands for the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. David is an author of The Educator's Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence, and a co-author of the textbook, Challenges to Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs in Organizations. He is a Civil Affairs Officer in the Army Reserve and holds a Master's in Educational Psychology from Fordham University. Elizabeth Stranzl is the Director of The School Climate and Wellness Division of the New York City Department of Education. The pair join host, Mike Palmer, in a conversation about SEL in New York City schools and beyond. We reinforce why it's important and share how the research backs it up as we respond to the surprising backlash we've been seeing against some SEL programs across the United States. Then Elizabeth and David dive into the Strong Resilient NYC program and how it is designed to acknowledge and affirm the social and emotional strengths of students and how the initial research indicates that NYC school students, like so many students and families across the country, are demonstrating tremendous resilience in these difficult times. We make connections between what is happening in New York with what is happening on a local level everywhere in a deep dive into SEL in action that you won't want to miss! Mike Palmer runs us through three zeitgeisty trends that are bubbling up in November 2021. We begin by digging into recent developments around the Gifted and Talented program in New York City as we explore the challenges with the existing model along with opportunities for more inclusive approaches. We revisit our conversation with David Adams, CEO of The Urban Assembly to go deeper on this topic. Then we look at the state of civic engagement as we head into an off-cycle election day this week. We bring in conversations with Dr. Mark Sanders and Russell Glass, the CEO of Ginger and author of Voting with a Porpoise, to help flesh out the conversation. And then we conclude with Facebook's big announcement of its rebranding as Meta with a renewed focus on virtual and augmented reality. Mike connects the recent news to conversations we've had with Evan Gappelberg and Anurupa Ganguly on the learning opportunities emerging with the metaverse in a wide-ranging and informative survey of the spirit of the times in the world of learning trends. David Adams, the Senior Director of Strategy at The Urban Assembly, joins Mike to explore the many facets of Social Emotional Learning or SEL. David shares his career journey which charts a path through many of the key centers of research in the field along with practical experience in schools in New York City and around the world. He recently co-authored a book titled The Educator's Practical Guide to Emotional Intelligence. David expands on how he's established a cutting-edge SEL program at The Urban Assembly schools in New York and provides tips and insights for educators, parents and the rest of us on how to incorporate emotional learning into the educational experience. We also dig into the role of SEL in navigating a difficult and transformational year like this one. Of course, there are a few Whitney Houston and Star Wars references in there to keep things engaging. David's a tremendous resource in the field and we very much appreciate getting his perspectives on the show. We hope you enjoy and learn from the conversation as much as we did.

Kristin Kearns-Jordan, the CEO of The Urban Assembly, joins Mike this week to describe the career-themed approach to public education that is driving social mobility in 23 schools in New York City. We begin by hearing Kristin's origin story and career arc which has led to her current role with The Urban Assembly. From there, we dive into the mission and educational philosophy of the organization and its schools, which is all about career relevance and social mobility. Kristin describes how The Urban Assembly's approach is making an impact in her students' lives by showing them how their public education ties to their longer term college and career paths. We discuss the impact of Black Lives Matter and COVID-19 on public education and emerge with a sense of optimism despite the suffering and genuine peril students and families are facing this year. As we conclude, Kristin spotlights the screening of entry into public schools in New York as something that limits diversity and subverts the true goals of public education. She suggests that in light of the events of this year, there are genuine opportunities to open up access to address many of these inequities and deliver more quality, career-relevant education to all students. Thanks as always for listening. If you want to learn more about Urban Assembly, visit urbanassembly.org .

How can we construct a framework for how the world perceives, interacts and embraces men and boys of color to shift us from the belief of "No, they can't." to "Yes, they can!"? In April of 2010, Brandon Frame answered this call in a way that would change the trajectory of his career and the lives of Black men and boys in America. He started TheBlackManCan, Inc., an award-winning nonprofit organization that is committed to the healthy and holistic development of Black men, boys and their communities. In addition to being its Chief Visionary Officer, Brandon also is Deputy Director of Social-Emotional Learning at The Urban Assembly. In this Coach Chat episode, you'll hear how TBMC has evolved into a conscious social community that reflects positive images of Black boys and men of color. Brandon and Coach Colette unpack male privilege, and its impact on Black relationships. The two also discuss why it is critical to disrupt the hyper-masculine stereotypes of Black men to help young men and boys of color develop greater self-esteem. This is EPISODE #54 with David Adams. You can watch the interview on YouTube here. Welcome to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, my name is Andrea Samadi, I’m a former educator whose been fascinated with understanding the science behind high performance strategies in schools, sports and the workplace and created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are a teacher or student in the classroom, or working in the corporate world, to take your results to the next level. Thanks for tuning into the podcast today! If this is your first time here, I am so grateful that you have taken the time to listen. I am so excited about our guest today. His name is David Adams, and I’ve been watching his work, seeing his posts on social media and he’s doing some ground-breaking work. I noticed when he spoke on a panel[i] with former CNN host and educational activist Campbell Brown, Founder, The Seventy Four[ii]; (a phenomenal education focused website that I love learning from)  Susan Crown, Founder of the Susan Crown Exchange[iii]; (whose mission is to help people acquire the skills needed to succeed and thrive in a rapidly changing and connected world), Marc Brackett, Director Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence[iv] (who did EPISODE #22 on his book “Permission to Feel”)[v] and Karen Niemi, (Neemi) President & CEO, CASEL[vi].  If we are truly “the sum of the five people we spend the most time with” like Jim Rohn once said, you can only guess how impressive his bio is going to be.David is The Urban Assembly’s Director of Social and Emotional Learning,[vii] where his team builds schools' capacity to ensure that all staff and students they work with receive relevant experiences and purposeful instruction to develop the social emotional competencies that impact students’ success in school, work, and life. (Everything that we speak about on this podcast).  He is on the Board of Directors for CASEL (The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning) which is the trusted source for knowledge about high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning and I have to mention that he was also a Civil Affairs Officer in the United States Army, so you know that he is on a serious mission to achieve results.David, welcome! Thank you so much for being here today.Q1: I’ve read quite a BIO for you, and it seems that when we are dealing with education that we have a certain expectation of what we are looking for (whether it’s our students learning in the classroom, professional development for teachers, or even choosing the right assessments that measure what we are learning). What does it mean to you for a person to be educated?Q2: With everything that you see going on in the world today, why do you think our communities are struggling so much to solve problems across differences?Q3: In your recent article[viii] A New Vision of Education: Reimagining the Social Contract you talk about the fact that nobody is perfect, but we all have a responsibility to strive to live up to the values we want the next generation to embody. You talked about this phenomenon where education level is negatively correlated to the accuracy of perception of people across the political spectrum. Can you explain what you mean here, and why do you think this is the case?Q4: Tell me a little bit about the neuroscience behind this and how SEL specifically improving awareness can help us to all move forward. Q5: What are your final thoughts for how we can use SEL to solve our nation’s most pressing concerns to restore some hope, especially during these uncertain times?Thank you so much for your time today, and for sharing your insights with us. As a young teacher, Ingrid Chung saw herself in 12-year-old Kayshaun Brown. “What I saw in Kayshaun was the same type of intelligence, rebellious streak, and desire to go against authority that I had as a high-school student,” she says. Chung first taught Kayshaun, who goes by Kay, in her seventh-grade English classroom at the Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science in the South Bronx. That year went smoothly enough. Kay was bright, lively, and charismatic. And because of their instant rapport, Chung could get the boisterous Kay to behave when some of her colleagues could not. But as Kay grew, so did his capacity for troublemaking. By the time he started the 10th grade at Urban Assembly, the teen often skipped school, disrupted class, and swore at his teachers. Chung grew increasingly concerned that he would drift away, and that she would lose him. This is the story of her efforts to keep Kay in school. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/08/the-student-who-almost-got-away/535776/
