Today's podcast discusses three solutions that Project-Based Learning (PBL) brings to Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Key Resources & Connections PBL Networks: Administrators and staff members fired up about PBL should check out pblnetworks.com. This platform investigates issues and expands great ideas around PBL and CTE, PBL and maker spaces, and PBL and STEM, bringing together minds across the country to create solutions for the PBL world. Magnify Learning Approach: Magnify Learning uses a two-pronged approach to train leaders and teachers simultaneously. Their goal is to achieve a fully sustainable PBL model, culture, and trained professionals within three years. Customization is a core value, involving listening to CTE teachers and customizing resources to their work. The Challenge of Projects vs. Project-Based Learning While CTE programs are already rich with real-world application, engagement, and projects (students are welding, wiring, and cooking), simply doing projects does not guarantee learners are experiencing the full benefits of PBL. PBL offers three specific solutions to upgrade any CTE program. The Three Problems and PBL Solutions 1. Problem: Learners Aren't Always Engaged Even with authentic, hands-on work (like laying pipe or designing logos), engagement isn't always automatic because learners often don't know the "why" or the spark of purpose behind the task. PBL Solution: Start with a real problem and give the authentic work a new why and new purpose. Entry Event: A strong entry event is a staple of any PBL unit, creating the emotional hook and launching the unit by focusing on solving a real problem for real people. Example: Instead of just doing brake jobs in auto tech, learners begin the unit by meeting with a local nonprofit serving single mothers, giving the work a purpose beyond the technical standards. This aligns with Daniel Pink's "big three" elements of motivation: purpose, autonomy, and mastery. 2. Problem: CTE Teachers Can Lack a Clear Structure Many CTE professionals (e.g., master electricians, nurses, chefs, engineers) come straight from the industry and are not traditional educators. They may lack training in creating rubrics, connecting lessons to standards, or backwards planning. Without structure, projects can go "off the rails," potentially running far longer than planned (e.g., three weeks turning into nine weeks). PBL Solution: Use the six-step process to simplify planning and maximize learning. The six steps provide a simple, repeatable way to design rigorous, authentic projects and remove the guesswork. The Six Steps: Define the problem. Set the solution criteria. Research possible solutions. Choose a solution. Implement it and inspect it. Reflect on the process. PBL offers scaffolding, and resources (like planning templates and rubrics) can be tailored specifically to fit CTE departments (e.g., welding or HVAC). 3. Problem: The Amazing Work Isn't Being Shared from Your CTE Programs Incredible things are happening in CTE (e.g., rewiring homes, interning at hospitals), but they often happen "behind closed doors," and the community never sees them. This leads the community to misunderstand the current state of CTE (thinking it is "shop class from 50 years ago"). PBL Solution: Make the learning public. Public Presentations of Learning to an authentic audience is a core component of PBL. Authentic Audiences may include a panel of industry professionals, the local school board, or a neighborhood news outlet. Benefits: When work is made public, learners take pride in it, community partners see the advanced work happening, and the district sees the CTE program as a "crown jewel". Example: Culinary students cater a luncheon for a local senior center, researching dietary needs and letting the local newspaper know, resulting in a "splash" of good news. Conclusion PBL is a smooth transition for CTE because the programs already have authentic projects and CTE professionals understand the work. When done right, PBL aligns with what CTE is already good at and helps build citizens, problem solvers, and leaders in addition to the workforce of tomorrow.

In the bustling corridors of Dowell J. Howard, a transformative change is taking place in the realm of Career and Technical Education (CTE). On a recent visit, Valley Today host Janet Michael sat down with Principal Ben Thompson to explore the dynamic programs and opportunities that have elevated the school to new heights within the Frederick County Public School system. Taking place amidst the hands-on learning environments of Dowell J. Howard, the conversation delved into the myriad of programs, from Criminal Justice to Nursing, that are now integral parts of the school's offerings. Thompson shared that a goal set three years ago by the administration was to expand or add 10 programs in 10 years—a goal they are well on their way to achieving. He highlighted recent additions such as the Criminal Justice program, reinforced by a partnership with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, and the rapidly growing Nursing program which recently saw the addition of a fourth instructor. Janet and Ben also discussed the future of the school's program offerings, including exciting prospects like Data Science, bolstered by a $2.8 million grant from the state of Virginia, and the possibility of a Diesel program. The principal touched on the current high demand for these courses and the balance necessary to meet both student interest and industry needs, ensuring students are employable upon completion. The conversation shone a light on the very essence of CTE programs, emphasizing practical, hands-on experiences. Janet pointed out the real-world applications of the program, such as students working on cars, constructing sheds, and engaging in evidence collection for criminal justice. One critical issue highlighted was the astounding 305% increase in CTE applications over three years, contrasted by the unfortunate reality that space and resources limit the number of students who can participate in these valuable programs. This challenge underscores the need for further expansion and resource allocation to meet growing demand. Beyond the curriculum, the school also prides itself on its competitive spirit, with students achieving impressive feats in state and national competitions. Thompson spoke proudly of recent accomplishments, including state championships in auto service technology and high placements in criminal justice and collision repair competitions. To celebrate student achievements, Dowell J. Howard holds a unique ‘completer' event each year, recognizing the accomplishments of students who have earned certifications across various programs. This not just marks the end of their academic journey but also symbolizes the beginning of their professional lives, with tangible tokens like engraved toolboxes and hammers awarded to them. Ben also encouraged the community to visit during their open house events and witness the cutting-edge facilities and programs firsthand. These tours aim to dispel misconceptions about trade education and highlight the immense value of CTE programs in providing students with practical, employable skills straight out of high school. The next one is scheduled for March 27 from 5:15pm til 6:15pm. Representative Rob Wittman is a Republican representing Virginia's 1st Congressional district in the US House of Representatives. Representative Pat Ryan is a Democrat representing New York's 18th Congressional district, and is a former Army intelligence officer who deployed to Iraq. Together, they formed the House Modernization Caucus, driving key policies in national security innovation. Congressman Wittman: Congressman Rob Wittman was first elected to the United States Congress to serve Virginia's First Congressional District in 2007. In the U.S. Congress, Congressman Wittman serves as vice chairman of both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, where he is well-positioned to represent the needs of Virginia's First District. He has earned a strong reputation for being an advocate for our men and women in uniform and for being a champion of the Chesapeake Bay. Congressman Wittman was re-elected for his ninth full term in the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2024 and prior to that, he served in several levels of government. Congressman Wittman won his first campaign for public office in 1986 when he was elected to the Montross Town Council, where he served for 10 years, four of them as mayor. In 1995, he was elected to the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors and was elected its chairman in 2003. In 2005, voters in the 99th Legislative District elected Rob to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served until his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2007. Prior to his election to Congress, Rob spent 26 years working in state government, most recently as field director for the Virginia Health Department's Division of Shellfish Sanitation. Earlier in his career, he worked as an environmental health specialist for local health departments in Virginia's Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Tech. Congressman Ryan: Congressman Pat Ryan is a fifth-generation Hudson Valley native, proud Kingston High School alum, and the first West Point graduate to represent the Academy in the U.S. House of Representatives. Ryan served two combat tours in Iraq, earning two Bronze Stars. Prior to his 2022 election to Congress, Ryan served the community that raised him as Ulster County Executive. There, Ryan led the County through the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded policies that delivered relief to working families while never raising taxes. He led the charge to revitalize the former IBM site, now known as iPark 87, helped put money back in small business owners and residents' pockets, took on corporate special interests, and delivered new investments in mental health services. In Congress, Ryan is focused on defending fundamental freedoms and delivering relief for Hudson Valley families. Serving on the House Armed Services Committee, Ryan is working on issues of military preparedness, countering the threat of a rising China, and investing in the United States Military Academy and the next generation of military leaders. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Ryan is committed to improving the daily lives of all residents in NY-18. Radio is a powerful example of why being different doesn't mean being wrong—and how society often struggles with that distinction. Based on a true story, the film follows the relationship between high school football coach Harold Jones (played by Ed Harris) and a young man with an intellectual disability, James Robert “Radio” Kennedy (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). Initially an outcast in the community, Radio is taken under Coach Jones's wing, gradually becoming a beloved figure at the school. The film ultimately teaches that just because someone doesn't fit traditional expectations doesn't mean they're wrong or less than. True strength lies in compassion, and real leadership is about lifting others up rather than shutting them out. Radio encourages us to rethink our biases and embrace people for who they are, not just for how they compare to societal norms. Meredith has guided dozens of Stantec clients through the engagement process on projects while simultaneously leading planning and specifications development for future academic spaces. Several of her most recent projects include School Master Planning for Alvin Community College, visioning and design of the Career and Technical Education Center for Lamar CISD, and School Master Planning and Specifications for Salteaux First Nations in Saskatchewan, Canada. Before joining Stantec, Meredith oversaw Stantec's design and execution of the James Reese Career and Technical Education Center for Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, TX, defining program and project scope for the new facility. With a rich background in CTE, Meredith can communicate with educators in a way that architects cannot; because she's been in their shoes, at the front of a classroom, managing both success factors and the student experience. She believes that learning environments shape a student's experience, even if just passively. It is inside schools that students develop beliefs about their ability to be successful. Rachael is well-known in the education community as a speaker, author, and thought leader—with expertise in STEM, classroom innovation, and CTE professional learning. She is a founding member of the Council on the Future of Education. Rachael will lead the CTE program at MHS, which combines tailor-made instruction and hands-on learning with the ability to gain certifications and real-life experience through internships, co-ops, and pre-apprenticeships. Rachael holds an MA in educational leadership and has 14 years of classroom teaching experience in a range of subjects, including child development, science, technology, and culinary arts. Her experience includes work as the Network to Transform Teaching State Director, the Professional Learning Director of STEM, and the Arizona State Director for Educators Rising. Season 12, focusing on Rural Education, begins with a close look at the recent surge of interest in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and its benefits for students in urban and rural areas. Host Toni Myers welcomes Nicole Merchant and Bibiana Gifft, longtime teachers of Agricultural Sciences and Future Farmers of America (FFA) advisors at Baker High School, who explain what CTE can offer all students, not just those planning to enter the work force immediately after high school. They describe the breadth of CTE courses, extending far beyond the four walls of a classroom, into greenhouses, welding shops, construction shops, whatever fits the needs of the surrounding community. The two educators view CTE courses as a balance for the entire curriculum, showing students the practical applications of what they learn in other classes. The skills and habits they acquire in the CTE curriculum, such as learning how to be good employees, will transfer to any career path they follow. These courses are ideal for students who may not feel comfortable in a traditional classroom by giving them a purpose and building a community of learners. February is Career & Technical Education Month, and we're celebrating and elevating CTE with nationally recognized leader Dr. Sarah Heath! Recipient of Advance CTE's 2023 State CTE Distinguished Leadership Award, Sarah is the State Director for Career and Technical Education in Colorado and Associate Vice Chancellor for Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the Colorado Community College System (CCCS). In her current position, she leads oversight of all secondary and postsecondary CTE programs in the state, which train more than 230,000 students every year in fields as diverse as healthcare, construction, and aviation. Sarah has dedicated her career to advancing CTE, first as a high school business and computer science teacher, then as a state program director and local system administrator. Improving and increasing opportunities for workforce education and preparation is her life's passion; she served as the national president of the Association for Career and Technical Education and continues to advocate for CTE on a state, regional, and national level. In 2023, Sarah was named Equity Champion (CTE) by the Colorado Association for Career & Technical Administrators, a branch of the Colorado Association for Career and Technical Education. A proud "Triple Dawg," Sarah has a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree from the University of Georgia.
