When people consider a new employer they might think about a number of key factors, including location, salary, opportunities for growth and advancement, pension and others. One factor which has emerged in recent years is consideration of a potential employers stance on social issues, most particularly relating to their values. More than this, however, research by our guest today – Professor Moritz Appels – highlights that potential hires also consider a CEO's sociopolitical activism in evaluating how attractive a new, potential employer might be.About our guest…Moritz Appels is an Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the Department of Organisation and Personnel Management, Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Mannheim in 2022.His research illuminates how the behaviour of corporate actors shapes and is shaped by organizational and societal change, with a particular focus on the relationship between strategic leadership, social evaluations, and the broader socio-political environment. A particular focus of his work is the impact of corporate and CEO activism—e.g., speaking out on gun ownership in the U.S.—on stakeholder behaviours. He is likewise involved in understanding the environmental and dispositional antecedents of top managers' engagement in organisational and societal change. You can find out more about Moritz and his work at these links:https://www.linkedin.com/in/moritz-appels-a0b49a14a/https://www.rsm.nl/people/moritz-appels/https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=qEdUSREAAAAJ&hl=de Hosted on Acast. Sometimes in life things go wrong… mistakes, accidents, even disasters will occur. From festivals that fail due to poor advance planning, product launches that simply fail to, well, launch through to public construction projects that seem to drag on for ever and end up costing much more than originally envisaged. And typically when things do go wrong there are calls for inquiries, accountability and the apportionment of blame, sometimes leading to demands for heads to roll. To explore these questions further and to dig deeper into the question of blame games, we are joined on the Brain for Business podcast by Assistant Professor Sandra Resodihardjo of Radboud University. About Sandra… Sandra Resodihardjo is an Assistant Professor of Public Administration at the Institute for Management Research, Radboud University. Her research focuses on questions relating to safety/security issues and public policy. Sandra has written on agenda-setting, policy reform, inquiries, local safety policies, and blame games following crises. This week Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer was put on leave after he claimed an AI program, named LaMDA, had become sentient. We've all seen the movies where AI becomes sentient, turns on humans and machines take over the world - is this what's happening now? In a word, no. But we are joined by Dr William Ratoff, Asst Professor at the Department of Philosophy, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy at Trinity, who has a focus on current various issues in the ethics and regulation of artificial intelligence to discuss the possibility and implications of machine sentience. We're also discussing the frustration of being a lesbian journalist listening to & reading all the anti-trans sentiment coming through Irish media; wondering if the SocDems have all the solutions ready to roll for the housing crisis, nay disaster, that President Higgins so spicily called out and how the lack of confidence in ABP has gone official as Cork County Council passes vote of no confidence. Plus great art at the RHA, techno & great stages at AVA and obviously, JLo. Join Arun & JoJo as they go behind the wall of the science that underpins new treatments for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). While MDD is the leading cause of both personal and societal disability, there are still inadequate treatment options. But the advent of two very areas are bringing hope! The first area is psychedelic assisted psychotherapy that we covered in our psychedelic series - Episode 7 and Episode 8. And second, more exciting and frankly a profound option is the use of the language that the brain uses to communicate and turn that into a treatment. In this episode, we are joined by two wonderful individuals - Dr. Nolan Williams, Asst Professor at Stanford University and Dr. Brett Wingeier. Nolan is both a psychiatrist and a neurologist and with an impressive training. He takes and compresses (quite literally) all the learnings from deep brain stimulation and Transcranial Magnetic stimulation into developing a bespoke theta burst stimulation, and identifying it for a distinct patient population for its first adaptation - in hospital, psychiatric emergency.Brett Wingeier, the CEO of Magnus Medical is spearheading the development and commercialisation of the SAINT (Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Trial) technology via his company, Magnus Medical. In fact, based on the results of their most recent trial, Magnus Medical was offered a breakthrough device designation by FDA. Join us as we uncover the science of this wonderful field and how Bioelectronic medicine is moving from movement disorders like Parkinson's disease to positively impacting mental health. This is something that you will hopefully not get anywhere else in one piece.

An audience of tortoise shack members recently joined us for a Live Podcast on the Irish Housing System and the changes that can be made to deliver affordable and secure housing for all income demographics. Our panel was made up of UCD's Asst Professor, Orla Hegarty, Architect, Mel Reynolds and CEO of the Ó Cualann Cohousing Alliance, Hugh Brennan. We discuss the problems with the current delivery model, particularly the cost and its piecemeal plans for Public Housing. The panel outline real and deliverable solutions that could start to turn the current model - that defines the vast majority of housing as unaffordable by default - into one that can satisfy both the housing need of all and drive competition that would help drive jobs and sustainability. We also discuss how decisions following the last crash led us here and why there's a need for a real debate on a policy seems that remains fixated on propping up the model that failed so spectacularly only a few years ago. This is a must listen for City Planners, Builders and anyone hoping to one day buy a home. To support this podcast and attend similar events please join us at: patreon.com/tortoiseshack

We have covered all that you need to know before you jump on the bandwagon called dieting. #3 Know how to individualize the regimens according to your own choice. Because there is no one diet plan that fits all. Dr. Shubha explains about 3 plans than one start with and slowly pace it up. #4 I've heard that intermittent fasting helps you look younger. If it is so, then I am starting right away and guess what I got my green flag because dr. Shubha explained how practising IF actually makes you look younger. Hear the science behind it. #5 Having spoken in great detail about IF we also spoke about the most important part of any diet, what to eat? How to break the fast? In other words, what are we allowed to eat during the eating phase? Because people fast for 16 hours but then end up binge eating chicken tikka and biryanis. Which nullifies all the efforts. Know all about this from our talk. #6 Childhood obesity is on a rise with the current sedentary lifestyle, being glued to screens either playing games or for online classes. it has tons of adverse effects. What steps can you take to keep your child from getting obese? #7 The most disabling yet common problem that everyone has to deal with is acidity. University of Maryland Asst. Professor John Dickerson joins us and discusses his work at the intersection of computer science, AI, and economics, with a focus on solving practical problems using stochastic optimization and machine learning. He studies, "anything having to do with markets which sounds traditionally economic, but think about all the markets that you interact with every day for advertising. Facebook exists because of advertising. Most tech money these days exists because of advertising. This is a market-design problem, and it's one that I don't think traditional economics entirely would be able to capture. Computer science allows us to bring techniques that CS people have been developing for decades into this world."
It is a great honour to have to the Assistant Professor from the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, Abbey Steele on this week's episode 245 of Colombia Calling. Not only do we discuss some of the poignant issues raised and debated in her book: "Democracy and Displacement in Colombia's Civil War," but we also digress and discover Steele's experiences as a "helper" or "translator" in a Cali-based marriage agency. Talk about extremes! This is a fascinating conversation with an academic who possesses an intimate knowledge of Colombia, the political processes here and who has been able to show through extensive quantitative and qualitative research that the democratization of the political process in the country led, in fact, to an increase in violence and displacements. Tune in to hear more
Cornell University Assistant Professor Ross Knepper joins us and shares his thoughts on robotics being additive to the human experience, "robots have penetrated most of the domains that have no people in them. So we have robots in factories, we have robots exploring Mars. We have robots exploring Antarctica and under the sea. It's easy to solve those problems because you can make strong assumptions. You don't have to worry about harming people or cooperating with people. What we've seen is very limited penetration into human domain."

Conor Liston, Asst Professor at Cornell and head of the Liston Laboratory, discusses how targeted treatments for mental illnesses are possible, why they are necessary, and the future of these treatments. Currently, mental illnesses are diagnosed through the use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM. Unfortunately, many diagnoses rely on self-reported symptoms by patients–and because symptoms can be subjective to each patients, ultimately these may not lead to the most accurate diagnoses. Conor Liston, and his team at the Liston Laboratory, believe that by using brain scans, we can not only more accurately diagnose mental illnesses, but ultimately predict which treatments a person will most likely respond to. Already, their research has uncovered some fascinating discoveries about mental illnesses, in particular depression, and paves the way for new advances in treatment.
