Joku & Rosa discuss 'A Complete Unknown' a 2024 American biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, about American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. We also discuss 'Memoir of a Snail' a 2024 Australian adult stop-motion animated tragicomedy film written, produced and directed by Adam Elliot. It stars the voices of Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinon, Tony Armstrong, Paul Capsis, Nick Cave, and Jacki Weaver. Lastly, we review 'The Wages of Fear' a 1953 thriller film directed and co-written by Henri-Georges Clouzot, and starring Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck and Véra Clouzot. The film centres on a group of four down-on-their-luck European men who are hired by an American oil company to drive two trucks over mountain dirt roads, loaded with nitroglycerin needed to extinguish an oil well fire. In this intense and thrilling episode, Stuart and Jacob tackle the gripping narratives of "The Wages of Fear" and its "kinda, sorta" 1977 adaptation "Sorcerer". They delve into the harrowing journey of transporting volatile nitroglycerin through treacherous terrain, examining the character-driven drama and suspense that both films offer. How do these films explore themes of desperation, survival, and the human condition under pressure? And what makes one adaptation stand out over the other? Is it the odd synthetic soundtrack that sticks out of one like a sore thumb? Also in this episode are discussions about the perplexing title choice for "Sorcerer", their comedic take on Joe's bizarre behavior, the surprising lack of worthwhile character development in the remake, and a debate on whether they would transport volatile materials across a dangerous jungle themselves. All this and more on They Remade It! Plot Synopsis Timestamps: 19:54 - 29:03 ---------- Socials ---------- @ItRemade on X (Twitter) @theyremadeit.bsky.social on Bluesky theyremadeit@gmail.com

Welcome back, movie enthusiasts, to another thrilling episode of WN Movie Talk, where we dive deep into the world of cinema. Today I embark on an exhilarating adventure as I explore two cinematic masterpieces: Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1953 classic Wages of Fear and its gripping 1970's counterpart, Sorcerer, directed by Exorcist director William Friedkin two films based on the novel Le Salaire de la peur, examining how each film approaches similar themes and plot points while maintaining its own distinct identity."Wages of Fear." A groundbreaking film of its era, immerses us in the treacherous world of four desperate men tasked with transporting nitro-glycerine across perilous terrain. We delve into the tense atmosphere, the intricate character dynamics, and the raw intensity that make this film a timeless masterpiece. But our journey doesn't stop there. We shift gears to explore William Friedkin's 1977 remake, "Sorcerer." starring Roy Schieder. A bold reinterpretation of Clouzot's original, "Sorcerer" thrusts us into a world of political unrest and moral ambiguity as four men from different walks of life are brought together by fate to undertake a harrowing mission. We analyze Friedkin's stylistic choices, the thematic layers woven throughout the narrative, and the ways in which "Sorcerer" both honours its predecessor and carves its own path.Thank you for tuning in to WN Movie Talk. This week, we're getting sweaty and clenching our buttocks tightly, because we've got two renowned movies filled with tight-fisted, white-knuckled tension. The Wages of Fear (AKA Le Salaire de la Peur), from director Henri-Georges Clouzot, is a proto-action thriller from the 1950s, which takes a while getting to its set-pieces and then doesn't let up until the final frame. Twenty-some years later, William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) decided to (not) remake it as the poorly-titled Sorcerer, updating those incredible action scenes with a massive budget and a more socio-politicial undercurrent. As always, we're here to weigh up the pros and cons of both approaches, before pitting them against one another. Clouzot's 1953 thriller may be the ultimate bait and switch, moving from a character study of four desperate men in limbo into one of the most suspenseful films ever made. The Wages of Fear shows us the triumph of human ingenuity much like Robinson Crusoe or Castaway, but it's also a grim statement about how we all carry our deaths within us: the thing from which we try to flee every morning when we wake up is closer than we can imagine. Everything hangs by a thread, and Clouzot exposes that thread by reducing human experience to its lowest terms. That he does so in a film in which trucks move slowly and carefully–usually forbidden on the big screen–adds to the audaciousness of his vision. Join Mike and Dan for an appreciation of a film that reminds them of Seven Samurai, The Dirty Dozen, Saving Private Ryan, The French Connection, Smokey and the Bandit, Reservoir Dogs, and The Road Warrior. This movie may have a Mario and a Luigi, but there's no Rainbow Road. If you are interested in Henri-George Clouzot's life and career, check out Christopher Lloyd's book in Manchester University Press's series on French film directors. Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum joins us for our SEASON TWO PREMIERE, and he's selected two movies that are real gateway drugs to classic cinema. Both films are tense AF depictions of desperate men trying to pull off that one last score. Both movies were also made by domineering filmmakers, so, as Ngaio says, this could have been our asshole director episode. First up, is THE KILLING (1956), a cutting-edge noir from a young Stanley Kubrick making his first Hollywood studio film. Made on a shoestring budget, Kubrick still shows more than mere glimpses of his future promise with overlapping timelines, a camera that appears to move through walls and furniture, and brutal violence that is still shocking today. Backing Kubrick is a noir who's who with Sterling Hayden putting together an intricate racetrack heist, Timothy Carey AKA God Hilliard as a deranged hitman, Elisha Cook, Jr. as the weak link in the chain, and Marie Windsor as Elisha's conniving wife. There's also a hairy wrestler airplane spinning cops! What more can you ask for? How about a bunch of sweaty dudes driving truckloads of nitro across treacherous South American terrain where any bump in the road--and there are loads of bumps--could send them all sky high? Well, that's what we've got in Ngaio's second pick, Henri-Georges Clouzot's THE WAGES OF FEAR from 1953. This movie is more of a gateway drug to French cinema that classic film as a whole, but the last hour or so of it is a real white-knuckler so you'll really want to heed the weed recommendations for this one to get you through all that suspense. "Don't smoke a sativa with this one," Ngaio warns. The Killing is streaming for free with ads on Pluto The Wages of Fear is streaming on HBOMax, Criterion Channel & Kanopy You can follow Ngaio on Twitter and Instagram at @ngaio420. We hope to have him back on the show soon. Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Philena Franklin & Greg Franklin Theme song and closing theme: Chaki the Funk Wizard Cory Sklar is on assignment but he will be back for our Psychedelic Kaiju episode in February. Broadcast in March 1956 its entry in the BBC Transcription Services catalogue reads: "For fourteen years Major Bloodnok and Captain Neddie Seagoon have been fighting the Japanese in Burma. For eleven of those years the war has been over, but the two sides have only recently awoken to this fact. Preparing for a triumphal return to Britain, complete with Japanese prisoners and Japanese saké, Neddie has the honour to be put in charge of the truck containing nitro-glycerine." Hot off two of the biggest hits of the seventies (The French Connection and The Exorcist), Friedkin decided to do his own version of one of the most acclaimed international films of all time, Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear, the tale of four desperate fugitives who are paid by an avaricious oil company to drive trucks full of nitroglycerine hundreds of miles to put out a raging fire at their refinery. It was an expensive and troubled production and had the bad timing of opening the same weekend that Star Wars was released widely across North America, heralding a cultural sea change in Hollywood that swept up his fellow auteurs in the New American Cinema of the seventies. Peter and I compare Sorcerer and The Wages of Fear, the two different ways these films criticize U.S. imperialism, and how Friedkin's misbegotten film eventually got a proper restoration in the 2010s and found a new audience. We also discuss the notorious international cut of Sorcerer, re-titled Wages of Fear and heavily tampered with by the worldwide distributor against the director's wishes. Plus: Peter tells us about the mood in the UK in the wake of the passing of Her Majesty. The Wages of Fear Spine Number: 36 Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot Genre: Drama   Movies need to set and manipulate a certain mood in order to be effective. It is hard to do. Tension is one of the most difficult to really maintain. There are things that people can do that add tension in obvious ways, but those tend to leave you flat once they're done. Jump scares and "here comes the bad guy" music can only go so far. With that in mind... damn! "The Wages of Fear," is tense as hell. Clouzot delivers one of the most incredible instances of building and maintaining tension throught. Its a simple story with complex detail. A group of people trapped in a remote part of Venezuela without the means to get home are offerd the opprotunity to make an incredible amount of money. All they have to do is transport two literal truckloads of nitro glycerine across an unpaved, remote and desolate road.  That set up alone... damn! This film is incredible. I mean... it takes an hour before they are even in the trucks! It's important that you see what life is in this small outpost. You understand the desperate circumstances that force people to do such... just insane things. This was remade by William Friedkin in the 70's with the baffling title, "Sorcerer," which is actually a pretty damned good film. I recommend both very highly. So, relax if you can and enjoy our thought after watching "The Wages of Fear."   Next week,    Spine number 600: Anatomy of a Murder  Also, check this out.
