Our RPGaDAY2023 Question today, RPGaDay Favorite Con Module / One Shots? A World of Dew is a samurai noir game inspired by Japanese chambara films like The Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
As we continue our journey through the history of the western genre, Alex and Jonathan take a detour to Japan to discuss an era of chanbara (samurai) films that bridge the gap from classic westerns to spaghetti westerns. We're talking about Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954), Sanjuro (1962), The Sword of Doom (1966). We discuss the parallels between chanbara and western films, the ways samurai have been mythologized in similar ways to old west gunslingers, and the construction and deconstruction of the ideals of that mythology. Skip to: (10:01) – Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (34:05) – Sanjuro (58:45) – The Sword of Doom (1:18:04) – Overall (1:26:40) – Coming Attractions Coming Attractions For a Few Dollars More (1965) Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) Duck, You Sucker! Today we're continuing off our discussion of Yojimbo last week with the follow-up film Sanjuro. Topics include Mifune's continued excellence, the beautiful imagery of the camellia flowers, and the question of whether or not JJ Abrams pioneered 80s nostalgia. Also, why we hate Garageband's MP3 restrictions. (Recorded March 19th, 2023.)
This week we're talking about the Kurosawa film Yojimbo, a pivotal film for both the western and samurai genres. We discuss the commanding central performance from Toshiro Mifune, the elegant simplicity of the plot and the setting, and wonder exactly how many ten year olds we could beat up. Also, why we hate working when the time changes. (Recorded March 12, 2023.)
When discussing the history of the Western genre, there is no escaping the name or work of John Ford, so today Alex and Jonathan dive in to three of Ford's landmark films: My Darling Clementine (1946), The Searchers (1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). We talk about the ways Western films elevate actual historical events to the level of mythology, the themes and tropes that are presented and deconstructed through Ford's films, and how Ford uses film to pull back the mythological curtain of his own early films in the genre. Skip to: (12:47) – My Darling Clementine (44:36) – The Searchers (1:04:27) – The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1:20:38) – Overall (1:30:56) – Coming Attractions Coming Attractions: Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954) Sanjuro (1962) The Sword of Doom (1966) For more information, visit the blog: https://thefilmlings.wordpress.com/2023/03/01/ford Join us on Discord for ongoing film discussion: https://discord.gg/MAF6jh59cF
Our discussion of Akira Kurosawa classics continues as Jason, Dom and Eric discuss Yojimbo and Sanjuro, two classic samurai epics highlighted by amazing Toshiro Mifune performances. The guys have a greta conversation about the nature of heroism in these films, the ways the Mifune character is always two steps ahead, and of course the brilliant direction by Kurosawa. We think you'll enjoy this episode - please give it a listen and let us know what you think. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jason-sacks/message

Flip and Shaun discuss Akira Kurosawa‘s 1961 classic while also talking about how Michael Bay is criterion worthy!
Robert Kelly of the Record All Monsters podcast is the guest this week to discuss Sanjuro, Akira Kurosawa's sequel to his groundbreaking film, Yojimbo. We compare it to the original, discuss Sanjuro's character progression compared to Yojimbo, and reflect on the character's legacy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/japanonfilm/message
On Episode 4 of X-Ray Vision, Jason Concepcion and Cody Ziglar have the high ground when talking about three incredible shorts in Disney+'s Star Wars: Visions (dropping 9/22)! In Previously On (1:26)… they go bananas (better than flinging their feces, right?) for the trailer of Hulu's upcoming Hit-Monkey series as well as recap the latest episode of What If…? and predict what's coming next. Then in The Airlock (17:09) Jason and Cody dive deep (deeeeep) on three shorts from Star Wars: Visions: “The Duel” (Kamikaze Douga), “Tatooine Rhapsody” (Studio Colorido), and “The Twins” (Studio TRIGGER). Next, Jason cracks open The Omnibus (42:23) to explore the life and work of visionary director Akira Kurosawa and his prominent influence on the Star Wars universe. In The Hive Mind (1:00:34), Jason, Cody, and writer Alicia Lutes question whether Star Wars needs cinema when it has such good serialized storytelling in Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, and more. Finally, in today's Endgame (1:19:57 )Jason & co. award their Medals of Yavin to the best characters from these three Visions shorts. Who was your favorite? Use #XRVEndgame to let us know! The nerds start their third month looking at the films of Akira Kurosawa as they discuss, Sanjuro! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thenerdcorps/support
Kenny and Del venture into new territory with their discussion and review of the legendary Japanese ronin film, YOJIMBO.Released in 1961, YOJIMBO was an instant box office success. YOJIMBO is the story of a wandering ronin (Samurai without a master) who came upon a small village plagued by two rival gangs. The ronin assumed the name Sanjuro and plotted to pit the rival gangs against each other by offering his services as Yojimbo (bodyguard) to both gangs, earn some money, and free the town. This show is the beginning of the Brothers in Armchairs Podcast journey into Akira Kurosawa's filmography. Kurosawa's YOJIMBO opened the western world to Japanese films and became the origin/inspiration for many film makers, novelists, comic book artists, and more. For these reasons, the guys felt it imperative to pay tribute to this film through their usual discussion and breakdown. Listen to the show and let us know your thoughts about YOJIMBO. Our Japanese-themed month continues as we delve back into one of the masters: Akira Kurosawa. How does Sanjuro stack up to Seven Samurai? And is comparing to Green Eggs and Ham actually a good comparison? Sean seems to think so.
While the Crit Club bunch might look disheveled and slow, all it takes is a movie like Akira Kurosawa's Sanjuro to show everyone just how lightning quick we can be to love a film. We're no sleepy bear of a podcast, we just want you to think that while we stealthily slice our way through this legendary samurai story. Join us while we have a wonderful time discussing this 1962 sequel to Kurosawa's classic Yojimbo, and don't underestimate how quick our wits and how high our praise can go. Other things we discussed: - Yojimbo - Rashomon - Kagemusha - Tacoma - Prisoners - WandaVision - The Dig - The Queen's Gambit Join us next week while we transport back to the Mali Empire in the 13th century to view Souleymane Cissé's 1987 film Yeelen. And drop us a line! You can email us at critclubcast@gmail.com or find us on Twitter with the handle @critclubcast.
This week, the Crit Club heads into the dystopian, extremely recognizable near future with Ngozi Onwurah's Welcome II the Terrordome. Onwurah explores Black existence in this speculative fiction story, where Black people are forced to live in a squalid, enclosed slum they call The Terrordome. This gut punch of a film, which is also teeming with vibrant expression, refuses to look away from the fury that centuries of racial injustice has wrought. It's made all the more tragic by how familiar it feels to modern life, despite being made almost 30 years ago. Join us as we discuss this extraordinarily affecting movie. Other things we mentioned: - Do the Right Thing - District 9 - Hateful Eight - The Queen's Gambit - Books of Blood - Tremors - Housu - Mad Men Join us next week, when we're whisked away to feudal Japan to watch Akira Kurosawa's follow up to Yojimbo, 1962's Sanjuro. And drop us a line! You can email us at critclubcast@gmail.com or find us on Twitter with the handle @critclubcast.
On this sequel to our episode on Yojimbo, Liam and George welcome back Jose Rodriguez to discuss Sanjuro (1962), directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi and Yūzō Kayama. Topics discussed: Roborat; explosive violence; pounds and pence; keeping your sword sheathed; Demolition Man; ronins with hearts of gold. Also, faxes! Remember those?!Topics not discussed? Terfs! They suck. Jose's wonderful and beautiful Adolescencia and other works can be found here: https://vimeo.com/user5285910Hey, you all know we love you out there, right? But do you love us? Following the enormous success of Yojimbo, Akira Kurosawa created his second and only sequel: Sanjuro. This satire of the average chambara film sees Toshiro Mifune reprising the titular role, once again opposite Tatsuya Nakadai in a completely different role. Sanjuro is another fun Kurosawa adventure and may be his most overt comedy, but how does it stack up to its predecessor? Tune in to Sanshiro’s Boys, or rather this week, Sanjuro’s Boys, and find out!Listen here: https://linktr.ee/sanshirosboys
Part 2 of this double header brings us to Sanjuro! A perfect companion film to an already great film on its' own. Not to mention another great collaboration between Mifune and Kurosawa. Also used the Yojimbo theme again not only because it was all I could find but it also appears in Sanjuro as well plus it slaps so.....
This is now a Toshiro Mifune fancast We are back with part 1 of a 2 part companion episode. This is Yojimbo! Tyler's favorite movie for good reason. Probably the most western samurai film you'll ever see. So much so that it was remade as Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone in fact. Directed by the master Akira Kurosawa. With the incomparable Mifune as Sanjuro, who is just so magnetic anytime he is on screen.
Akira Kurosawa is the focal point of this episode of Screen Weens, where we look at The Hidden Fortress, one of the big influences for Star Wars. In addition we take a look at the duology of Yojimbo and Sanjuro, and all three of these films star the absolutely incredible Toshiro Mifune. 00:00 Introduction and Other Watches This Week 16:50 Question Time 23:30 The Hidden Fortress 46:28 Yojimbo 1:00:45 Sanjuro 1:09:25 Outro and Picks for Next Week

I'm not sure if Trubisky and Nagy are the answer. Trubisky is, by all indications, a quarterback who will probably not lose you the game if the playcalling is good. But here we are with 50+ attempts and fewer than 10 rushing attempts. What even is this team. It's October, and that means its time for nothing Halloween related on the Taiiku Podcast. I have planned this poorly. But we do have hashtag content! First, Chris (@gokuffy), Chris (@antoniuspius), and I continue our Kurosawa series with Sanjuro! Then, Chris, Helen (@WanderinDreamr), and I talk about Run with the Wind! Listen Show notes: 0:30 - We talk about Sanjuro! 25:00 - We talk about Run with the Wind! Next time is High and Low and Dan Doh.

We continue upon the Road to The Mandalorian Film Series with Part 2 which is a double feature of Akira Kurosawa! The first film is Yojimbo followed by its sequel Sanjuro! These two films are all about Toshiro Mifune absolutely owing the screen. There are morals to be discussed though and we will tackle that for each film. When you watch these two you really get sense of what we may see in the upcoming Disney + series by Filoni and Favreau. The DNA of the The Mandalorian will undoubtedly have some strains of this one-two punch so let’s jump in and mix it up!

(You can skip to about 10 minutes in if you want to hear about the movie. It’s all sexy ASMR and shop talk until then.) SANJURO (1962), sequel to the groundbreaking YOJIMBO (1961), is not so groundbreaking. It’s where you start to get a sense for the commercial viability of Toshiro Mifune’s inimitable character (he’d go on to appear in ZATOICHI MEETS YOJIMBO in 1970, pairing him up with the blind swordsman for the most ambitious crossover event of all time). Despite being specifically named after the character this time, SANJURO feels somewhat less true to the spirit of YOJIMBO. That’s maybe not surprising given that it’s an adaptation of a completely separate novel into which the character of Sanjuro was written to capitalize on the commercial success of YOJIMBO. Trivia! Theme: "Raindrops" by Huma-Huma/"No Smoking" PSA by John Waters.

Time for a little "Fist Full of Akira Kurosawa" with our review of his classic Ronin Samurai film Yojimbo. Weighing heavy with the archetype of the Western Genre, Kurosawa reinterprets the dynamic in 19th Century feudal Japan. While its debatable such a small Japanese village could harbor rival gangs of such murderous intent, the true enigma of the film is the mysterious Ronin Sanjuro. His motivations are mercurial, his turned conscience uncharacteristic. While a great film, its biggest fault may be Kurosawa's need of the film's amoral anti-hero to forcible assume a typical High Noon archetype. But whatever, Sanjuro's a cinematic badass, and that's pretty cool.Download: 263 Yojimbo

In this episode The Criterionist talks about Akira Kurosawa's SANJURO.
The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Week 14: Sanjuro Spine Number: 53 Director: Akira Kurosawa Genre: Samurai Good sequels are hard to come by. The act of making a movie, let alone a good movie, is an insane balance of such completely disparate elements, many of which are completely beyond anyone's control, that getting a film finished counts as a minor miracle. If that film does well, many times a filmmaker is expected to go back to the same well and try and capture lightning in a bottle a second time, sometimes more. Few people can pull it off, even fewer can pull it off well. Well, somehow, Akira Kurosawa is one of those who can pull it off, which is surprising to precisely no one. Sanjuro follows the hero of Yojimbo as he continues to help those who cannot help themselves. He stumbles upon a group of young, idealistic samurai who want to stamp out the corruption in their ranks. Being young, naive, and too quick on the trigger they are pretty much destined to fail. Enter Sanjuro, our nameless ronin with an unflinching code of honor and sense of right and wrong. Simple, streamlined, and absolutely gorgeous. Sanjuro continues Kurosawa's tradition of accessible, fluid story telling and absolutely unparalleled eye for framing and composition. Join us as we continue our Odyssey through Jim's Criterion Collection with another Kurosawa masterpiece. Next week: Spine Number 99: Gimmie Shelter (The Maysles Brothers documentary on The Rolling Stones' "Nightmare at Altamont.")
