Summary In this conversation, Shane Wuerthner interviews Jessica Spinner from The Whole Dancer. They discuss the importance of balance and self-care in the dance world, the challenges of transitioning out of dance, and the benefits of having a life outside of dance. They also touch on the limitations of identifying solely as a dancer and the need for a holistic approach to dance training. Jessica shares her coaching approach for dancers and offers advice for young dancers in training and dancers in transition. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of self-discovery, self-compassion, and seeking outside support in the dance journey. Takeaways Balance and self-care are crucial in the dance world to avoid burnout and maintain overall well-being. Transitioning out of dance can be challenging, but it is an opportunity for self-discovery and finding new passions. Identifying solely as a dancer can limit personal growth and artistic expression. Having a life outside of dance, pursuing other interests, and maintaining a support system are essential for a fulfilling dance career. Seeking outside support, such as coaching, can provide guidance and help dancers navigate challenges and transitions. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Jess Spinner, entrepreneur and holistic health coach at The Whole Dancer. Jess holds a bachelor's degree from Butler University in Dance and Arts Administration. Upon graduation, she danced with the Louisville Ballet and did some professional work as a freelancer in Boston. Now, Jess's life mission is to support dancers in finding a personal balance in their approach to food and their bodies. As a former professional dancer that struggled with body image issues, Jess knows the physical, mental, and emotional grind of dance. And, now looking back, Jess firmly believes that if she put more focus on taking care of herself off the dance floor, she'd have been an even better performer on the dance floor. On the podcast, Jess explains how she's now helping other dancers see that truth and discusses the joy she finds in seeing lives changed and dreams renewed. Moving Quotes: "When dancers say to me, 'It feels like you're reading my mind,' it's because I've been in exactly that place. You're in the studio or elsewhere and all you can think about is the size of your thighs or how much skinnier the girl next to you is." "I'm a firm believe that, wherever life takes you, there's something to be learned or gained." "I've had a number of dancers now say to me, 'I think I would have quit dancing if I hadn't worked with you.' This was my journey too. You can get into such a negative headspace... It gets you to a place where it's no longer fun." "So much of my dance journey from the time I was quite young became negative and hyperfocused on my body. To now be able to help dancers see a different path is hugely rewarding." "In starting my business, from the beginning, I was steadfast. This is what I am going to do. I'm going to make it work. I'm going to make it work for myself. And then I refused to give up." Meditation has become a hot topic over the last few years and we have discussed it multiple times during previous episodes. Meditation is both a practice rooted in ancient history and a topic of modern science, and is like exercise for your brain. I am joined on today's episode of The Whole Dancer by Rebecca Polan who is a body-centered healing coach, my go to for leading a meditation, and she is about to launch her own project embodiyou, an online practice community of like-minded people who meditate, move and practice yoga to feel better, together.
Jess Spinner is the Founder of The Whole Dancer and an ex-professional ballerina with Louisville Ballet. Jess began her journey into nutrition and health coaching when she had to leave behind the world of professional ballet due to an injury. Jess is a fully qualified Health Coach with over eleven years of experience behind her working with dancers from top companies such as New York City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet Company as well as aspiring young ballerinas and adult ballet dancers from around the world. Jess and I have a lot in common. Our businesses were both born out of a gap in the industry. A gap that we only discovered because we experienced the pain and anguish of not feeling balanced... or whole. I love how the two are interchangeable throughout this conversation... Like myself, Jess struggled with body positivity, confidence and food choices as a young professional dancer and through research, study, discipline and innovation with her business has created a community that supports and encourages young dancers to find their wholeness, their balance... their best body (which you'll find out in this discussion is different for everyone). In this conversation Jess and I do focus on the additional challenges during this particular time whilst navigating food choices and body positivity. But Jess also helps us define health and success in the broader sense with a sprinkle of confidence boosters, common sense advice and helpful suggestions. _____________ Get your FREE Balanced Ballerinas 'Intention Setting' worksheet HERE and start kicking GOALS: https://www.balancedballerinas.com/product/balanced-ballerinas-intention-setting-worksheet/ You can find more resources at www.balancedballerinas.com Instagram @thebalancedballerina Podcast @balancedballerinas Facebook - Balanced Ballerinas (ensure you join the *SECRET* Facebook group too!)
On this week's episode of The Dance Docs we return to our segment of The Whole Dancer. I am joined once again by Dr. Scott Leydig Psy.D. to talk about how to regulate the highs and lows of being at home, the loss of identity that dancers may be facing during this time and how our changes in self-care have potentially led us down a challenging path. We hope this episode provides you with some insight on how to get through your days and create a brighter outlook for the future.
This last week has brought on a new wave of emotions for many of us. With so many dance companies across the world closing their doors and rescheduling their seasons the questions are coming in with regards to the emotional impacts of not having any clear structure as to when will we return to work, and if there will still be a job for performing artists when all of this is over. Practitioners in the US have expressed concerns of having to close their small practices that focus on dance medicine as well as being called in to help make life altering decisions should our health care system become overwhelmed. As PT's we wear so many hats; as your Physical therapist, as your mental therapist, as a care giver, but in times like these I think it's necessary to reach out to the community at large and make sure that you are not only taken care of physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. The Dance Docs want to make sure that all aspects of dancer health are being addressed throughout the containment process of COVID-19.I am excited about this first segment of The Whole Dancer where I sit down with Sports Psychologist Dr. Scott Leydig. Scott is a clinical sport psychologist who works with athletes, dancers and performers. Dr. Davenport and myself have both worked with him as part of an interdisciplinary team to help dancers overcome anxiety, depression, coping with injuries and much more.
Instead of criticizing yourself in class, tell yourself I'm a beautiful dancer with a lot to offer. Jess Spinner, Creator of The Whole Dancer, on conquering perfectionism Looks can be deceiving. What's on the outside doesn't always paint an accurate picture of what's on the inside. Such is the case of dancers who look like… The post http://annettbone.com/098-2/ (#098: How to Overcome Body Image Issues [Podcast]) appeared first on http://annettbone.com (Annett Bone).
