Experts say kids are spinning out online. Can Washington lawmakers help by putting seatbelts on social media? Parents, tech workers and even kids are asking for social media regulation, and there’s a bill moving through the Washington State Legislature that could make it happen. Senate Bill 5708 would block apps like Instagram and Snapchat from using addictive algorithms to keep kids scrolling. It would also require apps to stop sending push notifications late at night and during school hours. Monica talked to social psychologist Ravi Iyer from the University of Southern California about what these regulations might mean - not just for kids, but parents and the companies themselves. This episode of the Lawfare Podcast features Glen Weyl, economist and author at Microsoft Research; Jacob Mchangama, Executive Director of the Future of Free Speech Project at Vanderbilt; and Ravi Iyer, Managing Director of the USC Marshall School Neely Center.Together with Renee DiResta, Associate Research Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown and Contributing Editor at Lawfare, they talk about design vs moderation. Conversations about the challenges of social media often focus on moderation—what stays up and what comes down. Yet the way a social media platform is built influences everything from what we see, to what is amplified, to what content is created in the first place—as users respond to incentives, nudges, and affordances. Design processes are often invisible or opaque, and users have little power—though new decentralized platforms are changing that. So they talk about designing a prosocial media for the future, and the potential for an online world without Caesars.Articles Referenced:https://arxiv.org/abs/2502.10834https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4178647https://www.techdirt.com/2025/01/27/empowering-users-not-overlords-overcoming-digital-helplessness/https://kgi.georgetown.edu/research-and-commentary/better-feeds/https://knightcolumbia.org/content/the-algorithmic-management-of-polarization-and-violence-on-social-mediahttps://time.com/7258238/social-media-tang-siddarth-weyl/https://futurefreespeech.org/scope-creep/https://futurefreespeech.org/preventing-torrents-of-hate-or-stifling-free-expression-online/https://www.thefai.org/posts/shaping-the-future-of-social-media-with-middlewareTo receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. On Friday, August 16, the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling in NetChoice v. Bonta, partially upholding and partially vacating a preliminary injunction against California's Age-Appropriate Design Code Act. The court affirmed that certain provisions of the law are likely to violate the First Amendment by compelling online businesses to assess and mitigate potential harms to children, but it vacated the broader injunction, remanding the case to the district court for further consideration of other parts of the statute, including restrictions on the collection and use of children's data. In this episode, Justin Hendrix recounts the basics of the Ninth Circuit ruling. And in a second segment that was recorded just days before Friday's ruling, Tech Policy Press fellow Dean Jackson is joined by Tech Justice Law Project executive director Meetali Jain and USC Marshall School Neely Center managing director Ravi Iyer for a discussion on key questions that were before the Ninth Circuit and their implications for future efforts at tech regulation.

Today's guests are Jonathan Stray, a senior scientist at the Center for Human Compatible AI at the University of California Berkeley, and Ravi Iyer, managing director of the Neely Center at the University of Southern California's Marshall School. Both are keenly interested in what happens when platforms optimize for variables other than engagement, and whether they can in fact optimize for prosocial outcomes. With several coauthors, they recently published a paper based in large part on discussion at an 8-hour working group session featuring representatives from seven major content-ranking platforms and former employees of another major platform, as well as university and independent researchers. The authors say "there is much unrealized potential in using non-engagement signals. These signals can improve outcomes both for platforms and for society as a whole."
So an MD with ADHD walks into… actually, what happens is that the gentleman creates so much presence that time flies and people feel connected. How? Breathing into presence, breathing out ego. Dr Iyer is based in Virginia (via India). He's writing a new book about neurodiversity, autism, and sensory processing disorders which he refers to as types of personality, not disorders. He also wrote a book called The Reaper's Dance about how we found our humanity in the midst of the COVID pandemic, coming face-to-face with our own mortality. He calls that time “a phenomenal global experiment.” Influenced by Brunton's Search In Secret books, Ravi found comfort in some to the breathing exercises that helped quiet his mind AND open him to non-judgmental experience. He found his path to NOW. That is, staying in The Now. Consciousness consists of our ability to perceive experience and our ability to create a narrative about the experience. True personal power comes from choosing which narrative to pay attention to. Grounding comes from watching The Tide Of Your Breath - take note of the deepest place in your chest for the inhale and note about where your breath extends in the exhale. Practice that and see how your focus sharpens. The ability to get grounded is foundational to success. Find Dr. Ravi Iyer, his book(s), and other resources at https://www.DrIyer.com
We're back from the holidays, and it's time for a new episode of the Techdirt Podcast! This week, we're joined by Ravi Iyer, Research Director for the USC Marshall School's Neely Center and Managing Director of the Psychology of Technology Institute, to discuss a proposed "design code" that aims to make social media better serve society. Mike isn't entirely convinced by the approach, leading to a long discussion about all its ins and outs.
The Covid 19 pandemic was fraught with political and bureaucratic mismanagement that resulted in thousands of needless deaths, according to renowned Washington, DC-area physician and author Dr. Ravi Iyer.Perhaps worse, however, was the warning issued by Dr. Iyer on the Lean to the Left podcast, saying that sloppy actions by scientists and the Wuhan laboratory in China allowed the virus to escape and unless preventive steps are taken, the same thing could happen again."The one thing that we need to understand right now is we don't have proper guardrails, because this kind of science is going to continue to get done," he says. "The Pandora box is open and all over the world people are going to do this. It's going to happen. They key is how can you do this safely? How do you regulate it? Virologists are fighting tooth and nail to prevent regulation. They want business as usual."Dr, Iyer is the author of a compelling new book, The Reaper's Dance, which puts the reader in a ringside seat to the horror of the Covid pandemic, the calculations of men who were in positions to influence the fate of millions, the science that might have unleased the pandemic, and the science that saved the world. He is the founding physician and president of the Iyer Clinic in Fairfax, VA. A physician-scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur with research publications in the mechanisms of gene controls and several lpatents on human and veterinary medicines and devices, he is also CEO of ActivPower, Inc., a nutrition and wellness company he founded.America's response to the pandemic was "very bad...a clusterfuck,"Dr. Iyer said. "You would have a CDC official making a statement about a public health policy and (then) there will be somebody else from this side of the administration saying something to contradict this guy.""Deeply flawed leaders," he contended, "played to the fears of a deeply disillusioned population and they, the flawed leaders' demagoguery, came to America at the right time to tap into the fear of loss ofd power." Half the population, he added, felt like they were "under siege, feeling that they, their way of life was going away for reasons that they could not understand."Other key points discussed as Dr. Iyer offered his analysis and warning:Many Americans distrust the pharmaceutical industry, which they believe is simply focused on generating profits, thus adding to skepticism regarding the vaccines.Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, was partially responsible for Covid 19's spread because his agency provided funding for the Wuhan lab in China.Dr. Iyer's clinic used such commonplace items as overalls and swimming pool chemicals to protect personnel there, even as other preventive items were in short supply, and not a single worker became ill.He credits former President Donald Trump with his "warp speed" approach to bringing out the Covid vaccine, but then said Trump "dropped the ball" when he learned FDDA approval would not come before the November election and said it was then up to the states to individually implement it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

The Reaper's Dance: 1000 Days of COVID by Ravi R. Iyer MD https://amzn.to/3Y2G1U3 From the suburbs of Washington, DC, and northern Virginia to the bat-infested caves of Wuhan, China, Dr. Ravi Iyer traces the myriad networks of the virus that brought the entire world to its knees for twenty-four months and decimated the lives of millions in its path. The Reaper's Dance puts you in a ringside seat to the horror of the COVID pandemic, the calculations of men who were in positions to influence the fate of millions, the science that might have unleashed the pandemic, and the science that saved the world. From the failures of governments and leaders to the triumphs of individual men and women, The Reaper's Dance is a story of the complex and compelling tapestry of human hubris and humility, courage, and cowardice, with an enduring, cautionary message for all humankind. The Reaper's Dance is a must-read that will inspire you, shake you, and wake you up. Additional Praise for The Reaper's Dance: An intensely gripping account of the COVID pandemic. The writing is fast-paced and the book reads like a thriller but remains factual and very well-cited in its references. This is a book to be savored and returned to for its continued relevance long after the last page has been read.... H. H Dr. Ravi Iyer has done a fabulous job in pulling together the story on the political stance changes, the thinking on the origins of the virus, and weaving it into the narrative in a fast-moving book that gripped me from the first page. I kept catching myself thinking as I read it, “Oh yes, that did happen”, “Trump did indeed say that” … and shake my head in disbelief as I read on. I liked the stories of the specific patients that peppered the evolution of the analysis of the pandemic. Also the bit on the seniors with cognitive decline … it hadn't occurred to me how difficult it would have been to care for that group.... A. B

'Akranto' is Ravi Iyer's latest music single release in collaboration with Manisangsu Bhowmik who wrote the lyrics in Bengali language and rendered his vocals, joined by Arvind Iyer on Bass. This episode features some very insightful and informative thoughts behind the lyrical meaning and content of this composition. Since the lyrical content is in Bengali language and also contains excerpts from one of the greatest poets Jibanananda Das (17 February 1899 – 22 October 1954), this composition by Ravi Iyer throws light on the poet's writing style and his thoughts during that point of time. This episode is sure to add invaluable information to your arsenal of knowledge.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/raviiyerfusion) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ravi-iyer95/message
