June 17, 2024 | There's a stereotype in schools where popular students sit at the "cool kids' table" where they view themselves as better than their peers. In this message, Daniel Harris warns that exalting yourself above others is dangerous and can lead to ungodly comparison and competition. As Jesus commands in Luke 22:24–30, we are to be humble and lead by serving others. For more information about The Vue, visit www.bellevue.org/college. Does being enthusiastic feel a little bit cringe? I don't know about you, but I grew up in a culture where being enthusiastic or passionate about anything was considered to be a little bit weird. It was not cool to be keen. It was cool to be jaded, To not get excited about anything, Which is one of the reasons why talking to my guest today was so refreshing. Ellie Kime is a messaging mentor, helping small businesses explain who they are, what they do, and why they're so good at it. She also founded the Enthusiast and Co. A platform to encourage people to be more unashamedly, unabashedly, enthusiastic, and to believe that caring is cool. So she's the perfect person to talk about passion and enthusiasm with. And as Ellie says in the podcast, enthusiasm is one of those things that really makes life worth living. We talked about a whole bunch of stuff on the podcast, including digging into Ellie's dissertation on fangirls and how they were treated by the media, and my dissertation too.We discussed how enthusiasm could feel very frivolous but that, actually, it's an essential part of an activist's toolkit - one of the ways that we stay connected. We talked about how working in the wedding business gave Ellie insight into the psychology behind consumer behaviour. We talked about how we see women's hobbies and enthusiasms or their pastimes as having less value. And how this bleeds into the way we regard different people's businesses or their skills. And we talked about how we reach for the big issues when people ask us what we care about. But that actually those seemingly niche causes - not only do they matter to you, but also they're a lot easier to get our teeth into and try and do something about.Oh, and Ellie introduces me to the patriarchy! (lolz)I had a lot of fun diving into Ellie's understanding of fangirls, into sexism, misogyny, football games, and academic sugar daddies. So, yeah, strap in, grab a cup of tea, and listen to Ellie get on her soapbox.Get enthusiastic with Ellie hereOr discover her ick-free introductions hereSend her an email at ellie@eleanormollie.co.uk Find her on Instagram here Looking for more? Brought up by a third-generation HVAC business owner, Brian shares how he was born into the industry which has molded him to become the man he is today and the successful businessman he has become. Here are three tips from Brian's story on how to succeed in the HVAC industry:1. Be willing to learn. Brian talked about the importance of pursuing technical education while working for his family's HVAC business. He credits the technical training he received for his board certification, which, in turn, opened up many doors for him.2. Be adaptable. The HVAC industry constantly changes. Brian explains that if you are not willing to adapt and remain innovative, then you may become irrelevant. Keeping up with the latest technology and trends is essential.3. Work hard and be disciplined. Brian shares that 365 days straight he rode his bicycle 10 miles every day, whether inside or outside, to maintain a disciplined and healthy lifestyle, which helped him to become more productive in his daily life.Brian's story is inspiring and full of lessons worth learning. They discuss the concept of "Alignment over Assignment," which has helped shape Brian's success, both in personal and business life. Here are three tips from the discussion on how to adopt an "Alignment over Assignment" approach:1. Identify your core values. Brian emphasizes the importance of identifying one's values to ensure that all aspects of life, including work, align with them, leading to a happier and more fulfilled life.2. Focus on your strengths and delegate weaknesses. Successful entrepreneurs, like Brian, don't try to do everything themselves. Instead, they delegate tasks that they are not skilled at to others who are. They focus on doing what they do best.3. Build a team with a shared vision. Brian stresses the importance of having a team that shares one's values and commitment to a common goal. When everyone is aligned, amazing things happen. To hear more about Brian's inspirational journey and his thoughts on alignment over assignment, check out the Traded Life Podcast, available on major podcast platforms.Quote: "Alignment over assignment, bro. What is “cool kid church?” It's the gleaming church-that-doesn't-look-like-a-church in suburbia. It's the church with the pastor who's just a “cool guy” talking with the congregation. It's the church of modern consumer capitalist America. It's the church of American suburbia and the upper middle class, preaching a Christian message that provides meaning without producing undue comfort. It's the church that emphasizes a “relevant” Christianity that will speak to you “no matter where you are on your spiritual journey.” But what do we find as we decode cool kid church? That's the topic of this episode. Were you seen as a "cool kid" when you were in middle school? How does your "what makes a cool kid" criteria match up to today's middle school "cool kid"? Alyssa and Andre tackle these questions and more in this episode that is rooted in building connections with the students in your building.
On this episode Rebecca and I explore how to see the good in real life people, where that comes from, and discerning real goodness within from those who might not be entirely coming from a place of good intentions. We talk about superheroes, our favorites, and their contribution to society, and what qualities we cherish in them, and how they help us to find our goodness and bravery within. We talk about the difference between those who have "it" and those who don't. What is the "it" factor when it comes to goodness, kindness, coolness, and having that cool natural likeability thing that seems to be so natural in some people, this inherent sense of cool, calm, collectedness, and the successes and spoils therein, and how can we capture the "it" factor in all of us? We talk about the qualities that make up a good person from a bad person, and how to find the good inside of people who are not perfect, but who are trying to be an agent of good on the whole. We talk about how to embrace who we really are on the inside and making that a cool thing. At the end of the day, greatness and coolness is different for everybody, and attitudes and agendas out there range from the practical to the boisterously ridiculous to the tragically shallow, and those folks who are getting strange and bad attitudes thinking they're getting stronger, when all they're really doing is becoming creeps. We talk about the difference between being strong, fierce, and embodying a "spiritual warrior," and getting downright cruel, indifferent, mean, and not coming correct. Here, we try to sort out the good from the bad, and how to embrace a positivity, strength, and greatness within, but here in the real world, not what characters can get away with in the movies. Thank you for listening, we really enjoyed making this one, it was both a lot of fun and an eye opener! Thank you so very much for embracing us, we're really coming into our own, finding ourselves, and embracing who we want to be and sincerely loving you fine people as well! On these longer episodes, feel free to listen to our show in segments. We record twice per week so we can work on other projects, so that you might listen in bite size pieces if you need to, breaking it up into daily chunks of self-affirmation if you will, so you can hang with us every single day!
