“[complex trauma] begins to affect your sense of reality, your sense of self, self-worth” - Harris Eddie HillWe hear about PTSD, and we hear about trauma, but do we hear about complex trauma? Complex trauma is intricate and happens more often than we realize. And yet it isn't discussed.Join Alara Sage and Harris Eddie Hill to bring this very important topic to light. In this episode, you will learn:Trauma is more complex than what is often labeled or seen as.Complex trauma is difficult to pinpoint and often involves a series of smaller traumatic events.Common triggers of complex trauma include relationships with emotionally unhealthy individuals, people-pleasing tendencies, struggles with setting boundaries, and a pattern of fixing other people's problems.Healing from complex trauma involves reconnecting with and supporting all parts of oneself, including the inner child.Empowerment comes from taking responsibility for one's own healing and setting boundaries to protect oneself.Healing from complex trauma requires self-compassion, resilience, and a commitment to showing up for oneself.Connect with Harris Eddie Hill:Instagramhttps://www.Instagram.com/mxharrishillWebsitehttps://www.Mxharrishill.comSupport the showReceive a FREE Free 22-page e-book Higher Mind Activating & Accessing Your Higher Mind Gain consistent and regular clarity in life. Abuse from an intimate partner can begin at any time in a relationship, and that abuse can continue later in life revealing itself in unique ways. For example, physical violence such as non-fatal strangulation over the course of a relationship can result in early-onset dementia, brain injury, and/or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs or "mini-stroke") in older adults. An abusive partner might then weaponize the resulting dementia though gaslighting and emotional abuse continuing a pattern of abuse for decades. Many women over the age of 65 also experience abuse in the forms of isolation, dependency, neglect, financial abuse, inadequate nutrition and denying access to medical care. Many older adults are unsure where or how to seek services for their trauma or injuries and lack both the resources and the support network to address their experiences. Ruth Guerreiro and Jordyn Lawson from Genesis Women's Shelter & Support join the show to discuss the impact of domestic violence later in life and what services are available for survivors.Ruth Guerreiro is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor, certified in EMDRIA and the Senior Director of Clinical Services at Genesis where she has worked for the past 10 years. Jordyn Lawson is a Licensed Professional Counselor Board Approved Supervisor and the Senior Director of Residential Services at Genesis, who has also been with Genesis for 10 years. Combined, Ruth and Jordyn bring a minimum of 20 years of experience serving survivors of domestic violence and have a deep understanding of the trauma that ensues from that experience.

Dr. Carola Salvi launched the exhibit "The Power of the Other Hand" in response to the stories of domestic violence shared with her by survivors. In this episode, we peel back the layers of these survivor experiences to reveal the raw emotions beneath the images, the artist, and the women portrayed on the canvas. Tackling some of the most challenging aspects of abuse such as the impact of non-fatal strangulation, the scars of physical violence, and the trauma resulting from power and control, our conversation slowly but surely illustrates that experiences of abuse, much like art, are never as simple as they seem, and very often can alter one's life forever.Carola Salvi has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience. She is a Psychologist and Artist born in Bergamo (Italy), studied psychology in Milan, and in 2010 moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern University. In 2019 she joined the Psychiatry Department at the Dell Medical Hospital at the University of Texas at Austin. The exhibit, "The Power of the Other Hand", debuted at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas in 2022.

In this episode of MCLAHIGTI, I talk about bullying and physical violence in schools. Bullying is a major concern in our society today. This type of behavior occurs when an individual is targeted over time and repeatedly. Bullying can involve a balance of power and the individual who is the victim may have a hard time defending themselves. This behavior can lead to physical and psychological problems. Understanding and listening can help deal with this type of behavior. Support the show

The idea that insults, prejudicial or racist language is a form of violence is a highly problematic one that needs to be addressed. If we change the definition of violence so that the simple use of words could be used to ruin the life of another person, we create a slippery slope with no end towards a permanently polarized world built entirely upon an "us vs. them" mortal dichotomy. We need to maintain a clear distinction between violence and its meaning as a physical manifestation of accumulated aggression, hate, or rage as opposed to the verbal abusive or hateful use of language to demean, insult, or slander. The former causes physical suffering or even mortal wounding as the result of a physical attack. The latter — language — can be ignored, walked away from, or internalized.Get clarity in an area of your life where you're feeling challenged with one of my free, Personal Evolution Processes. Brian Mayer talks about how your past and what you saw in your parents married life may have affected your married life. There is no doubt that divorce happens for many reasons but sometimes it happens in part because of what we saw when we were growing up. We will talk about this important issue that may affect your remarriage and blended family experiences. We hope you enjoy today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Divorce happens for lots of reasons for sure. Sometimes it is because we aren't getting along, sometimes it happens because of a major betrayal like infidelity, sometimes it happens because you drifted emotionally apart due to work issues that cause different schedules, long hours, or terrible travel schedules. But sometimes there might be other factors at play. Today we talk about who much your parents married life and what you saw growing up may have had an impact in the ending of your previous marriage(s). The research is actually a mixed bag on whether this an important factor. In one study it was shown there is something to this issue. I am putting a link below in the Resources section but it showed in a longitudinal study that females had a 69% increased chance of divorce if her parents divorced while her chances increased a whopping 189% if both her and her spouses parents were divorced. In my own life this is a mixed bag. I am divorced, and my parents were divorced, but they were divorced when I was 2 years old. I don't really ever remember them being together so I don't recall what it was like to hear them have difficulties while they were married. However, they did have difficulties in getting along throughout my childhood. When it comes to my wife, who also experienced a divorce before marrying me, grew up with parents who stayed married and in fact a few months ago celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. My wife reports that in general that had a happy and healthy marriage while she was growing up. So anecdotally in my experience, I would have to say that I would be unsure if it is truly a causation. Probably the biggest helpful factor in how a parent's marriage would affect a child's marriage would be a happy and healthy one. If parent's stay married while not happy or if they divorce, would seem to suggest not as good for children than if parents are happy and healthy. Lets talk about though what some of the issues your parents went through that could cause problems: Poor conflict management. Did your parents fight in front of you? Was there escalated conflict. Did they raise their voices? Emotional of Physical Violence. Did you witness horrible name calling, throwing or destroying property? Did you end up spending the night with relatives because things got so bad between your parents or a parent in a subsequent marriage? Lack of Time Your Mother and Father Spent Together prior to divorce. Did one or both parents work or travel too much? Lack of Family Activities that Included Both Mom and Dad. Do you remember a lack of both parents attending your sports or other activities? Lack of affection shown such as hugging by your parents. Ultimately, the divorce(s) that you went through are complicated in there reasons for why they happened, but the relationship your parents had if they stayed married or if they got divorced could have certainly played a part in your divorce. Something to think about for sure as you look back at your life and something to think in regard to your children. The bottomline with your kids is that while their life may have been difficult up to this point, your have some responsibility and ability to reduce the chance that your children ever experience divorce. Against a backdrop of ongoing reports of terrorism, violence, physical brutality and sexual assault, Dr. Bob Klein and Vic Schermer ask us to consider the overlooked acts of non-physical violence voiced or displayed in families, schools, the workplace, and relationships. Drawing upon their professional work with individuals and groups and their extensive writing on violence, they discuss the causes and impact of insults, stereotyping, bullying, microaggression and institutional violence that marginalizes and stereotypes others and sanctions covert and overt violence. Crucial to their message is an interesting and important discussion of strategies to recognize and prevent these subtle but violent assaults to a person's sense of self. Most of us have been guilty of non-physical violence, victims of non-physical violence or bystanders of it. The cost to ourselves and others is too great. We can make a difference.
