A happy end of August to you all and happy returns to ZUCast! Our focus on "Tears of the Kingdom" continues with a stronger focus on how its story relates to our other adventures in Hyrule. Our first segment looks at how well the game fulfilled its role as a true "sequel" to a previous Zelda game, while the second looks at its overall placement in the Zelda Timeline. A lot of questions to be asked, and a lot answers that may or may not be given (or make sense). We'd love to hear your theories. SPOILER WARNING: Major and minor gameplay and plot details for "Tears of the Kingdom" are discussed and referenced throughout this episode. Are you still knee-deep into Tears of the Kingdom and perhaps crafting that perfect Hoverbike, hunting those nefarious Bubbulfrogs, or diving to grab a Korok seed instead of destroying Ganondorf and finding the princess? Then you might want to stay clear of this episode for now, because we are talking about EVERYTHING! Consider yourself warned, this is the spoileriest of spoiler episodes. In part 1:- We talk about the first Zelda game we played and why we love the series.- Find out which one of us tackled the geoglyph memories out of order and which one did it chronologically. - Find out where we think TotK falls on the Zelda Timeline (nah, not really, who cares?)- Hear us explore the story beat by beat and share why we think the narrative in this game is so much more compelling than in Breath of the Wild.- Hear us talk about what we think is the single greatest moment in video game history. (hint: It's vertiginous!)We originally planned on talking about many more things in episode 1, but it turns out we love this game so much and praising every aspect takes a lot of time, so please come join us for the next ones, where we will be talking about Side-Adventures, Side-Quests, Shrines, Temples, Purah, Sidon, Thirst Traps and everything in between!Massive thanks to our Patreon subscribers Andy Smith, Gene Limbrick, Debbie Booth, David Boys-Layton, Darren Hughes, Rob Wade, Ross Ewing, Roger Swan, The Giraffe, Thomas Duncan, Dominic Kemp, William Worthington, Jason Scott and the gang at Chat of the Wild!Reach out to us individually:Jonathan - www.twitter.com/jonathandunnChris - www.twitter.com/Chas_HodgesSupport us either via Patreon or with a one off donation here.

Well, after hours of gameplay (followed by even more hours of research), I have solved the puzzle! And Breath of the Wild may reveal more about Nintendo's Zelda timeline than we could ever imagine.

In this episode, Shawn and David discuss a sequel story to the Aesir/Vanir War, "The Mead of Poetry". The story features the origin and journey of the character "Kvasir", two deplorable Dwarves, and a family of Giants who are trying to put their lives back together only to unfortunately get in the way of Odin and his quest for wisdom.Shawn discusses Kennings, the Zelda Timeline, and also worries about accidentally offending Russians for the 2nd consecutive episode. Other Games Hyrule Warriors (2014) Wii U, Switch, 3DS A spinoff of the Dynasty Warrior game series from Koei Tecmo, the series follows several well known Zelda Characters in their efforts to push back the evil forces. While the story is loose, the major draw of this game is the Dynasty Warrior game play, which sees hundreds of enemies being defeated by a singular individual over a large battlefield with ever changing objectives. CD-I Games In 1989, Nintendo and Sony partnered together to create a CD based addon for their upcoming Super Nintendo System, set to release sometime in 1991 or 1992. Prior to the announcement however in 1991, Nintendo decided to dump the contract with Sony and instead went with Phillips to develop their CD based addon. The sudden announcement from Nintendo just prior to Sony's announcement eventually led to the Playstation system in 1994. Nintendo however, seeing the poor launch and reception of the Sega CD, pulled out of the agreement with Phillips for a CD based SNES Addon. However, with the agreement desolved, Nintendo agreed to allow Phillips to develop games based off the Nintendo Licenses, which included Mario and Zelda. As a result, three games were created by Phillips for their CD-I machine: Link: The Faces of Evil Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon Zelda's Adventure All three games are largely Action Adventure titles and not consider canon within the Zelda Timeline. Both Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon were released at the same time, featuring Russian animation that universally hated by the fans. Zelda's Adventure, released 8 months after the first set of game, featured a top down perspective, and replaced the animation with live action, which is still considered horrible by today's standards. All three games are largely unplayable in the sense that they are not fun and are frustrating to play. In Other Media The Legend of Zelda Cartoon During the height of Mario Craze, there was The Super Mario Bros: Super Show, which aired during day time syndication in 1989. A part of the original run was a series of Super Mario Cartoons, referencing at the time Super Mario Bros 1 and 2, with Super Bros 3 episodes later pushed to a 2nd season. The cartoons themselves were only about 12-14 minutes long, and were inner spliced with Live Action Mario and Luigi, played by Lou Albano and Danny Wells respectively. The Mario Cartoons ran from Monday through Thursday, but on Friday, was a Legend of Zelda Cartoon instead. The Legend of Zelda cartoon, much like the Mario cartoon, last only about 12-14 minutes, and a collection of thirteen were created for the series. The events of the series largely related around the time between The Legend of Zelda and The Adventures of Link, and often related to Link battling the remaining forces of Ganon to defend the land. The series was not without its comic attributes, as Link was constantly trying to get a Kiss from Zelda, along with the Tagline, “Excuse Me, Princess.” with the word ‘excuse' exaggerated for comic effect, usually used when ever Link was sarcastically apologizing to Princess Zelda. Contrary to most princesses as well, Zelda was actually very capable on her own right, often being engaged and participating in the action. The series is mostly well known for Link's Catchphrase, but was often a big interest among kids of their era, mostly due to the fact that it only happened once a week, and due to this, the episodes rarely looped upon themselves, so if you missed it, you wouldn't get the chance to see it again for 3 months.

The crew is joined by Brad from The Hair of the Dogcast video game podcast to talk all about the Legend of Zelda timeline on the year of the Zelda series' 35th anniversary. In this episode we stick to the main title games like Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Link to the Past, Wind Waker, the Adventures of Link, and many others. Apparently Nintendo put them all in a chronological order, and split them into three time periods, and then back together to one. Weird. We even talk about Freshly Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland for the DS. You can follow Brad on The Hair of the Dogcast anywhere you consume podcasts, and on Twitter as well. Thanks for listening! To celebrate The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary, we have produced an episode for elite Zelda fans. Are the Sheikah really a race of time travelers, jumping from Zelda game to game? Is there really a shadow organization known as 'The Interlopers' pulling the strings and causing the great Civil War of Hyrule? Zelda: BotW introduced the mysterious Zonai race...but we never actually see them. Why? Joining me for this celebratory episode is frequent guest, Arhungry, & all new guest, Zelda lore expert, GWJ. We take an epic dive into the Zelda Timeline and discuss some interesting fan theories on the series lore. It's dangerous to go alone! Shingen the Ruler! Legend of Kage! Jeopardy! Mag Max (not a spelling error)! Legend of Zelda 2! The Catholic Nerds welcome special guest, Erik Dumont! Check out Erik’s YouTube channel “Press C to Start” (full link below) where he reviews video games from a Catholic perspective, as well as game play. Follow him on Twitter @RPGCatholic. Erik is basically the Stephen Graydanus of video games :) Grab your controller! It’s time for the Catholic theology of video games … The Catholic Nerds rank, more or less, the greatest video games of all time. Also … the theology of The Legend of Zelda. Did you know the Book of Magic was originally called the Bible by Nintendo? And more! Also, the BEST Catholic reference in video games ever … Plus, deep dives into Resident Evil movies and video games; Red vs. Blue, the Halo series; Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy soundtrack; The Mandalorian & Baby Yoda’s extreme cuteness; plus Nintendo, Mario RPG, the zombie fungus apocalypse of The Last of Us, and Wolverine’s Catholic moment … which might be a bit of foreshadowing in the Catholic Nerds universe ;) Also … best news! Olivia Rene Dumont, Erik’s daughter, is doing great! Check out Erik’s game reviews, including an upcoming review of the Stardew Valley game … avoid that witch with the dark shrines!
