We chatted with Cork musician and artist bÚkl about the challenges of making music and getting it heard in 2025, as well as the joys of being based in the People's Republic Cork. See more about them here bukl.bandcamp.com Who are we talking to, is it a logical journey to what you do now? bÚkl is my artist name. Pronounced like 'buachaill'. I love Irish but we've always been in a bit of a twilight zone with it, and that's ok. I grew up in Myrtleville, Cork, by the sea. Music was always exciting to me ever since my Dad played me 'Live and Let Die' by wings on our turntable when I was around 5. I think it is a logical journey, even if I went about it arseways. I've been playing guitar, singing and writing songs and poetry since my early teens, and I have a degree in Music. In college I learned how to produce music with a DAW and MIDI. But I struggled for a few years mentally after leaving college. I stopped playing music and was afraid to leave my house. So music was shelved for a while, but thankfully I was able to revive myself and get back into it. Working in a record store with a very supportive boss was a huge help. I never stopped listening though. At the same time, mental health issues like anxiety and depression don't mix well with social media, so that part is tricky if I want to try to promote my stuff. bÚkl - Eclipsed (Official Music Video) bÚkl coming through from Cork What music did you love as a kid? It varies quite a bit. I liked the boy and girl bands in the late 90s, Boy zone and Spice Girls, when I was about 5-8, also the charting dance stuff like ATB and Dario G a bit after that. Then my parents got Sky and I discovered Kerrang TV at about 12. I was mesmerized by rock and metal, it was the best thing I had ever heard. I think the first song I loved on Kerrang was 'Links 1234' by Rammstein. The video with the ants vs the termites is still vivid in my head. Then I bought my first CD with my own money from Ray in MusicZone in 2001 after he opened that year in Carrigaline. I wasn't allowed to get Limp Bizkit because of all the language so I got The Offspring, 'Conspiracy of One's instead, which has less language! What are you working on musically now? At the moment, I'm rehearsing with my friend and colleague, Young Adam, to put the bÚkl music together in a live setting. We work with backing tracks and a loop pedal. Two guitars. I haven't played live in nearly 10 years so my confidence isn't great, but we're enjoying our jam sessions, so fingers crossed. I'm also going through my old recording devices and transferring riffs and song ideas to my laptop so I can flesh them out and record them in future. Do you feel it is easier or harder to create music now? I suppose it's easier for people to create music now because of how technology has progressed and that we have so many devices with recording capabilities. But I think if you have the passion you'll always find a way. I remember saving up for a camcorder when I was around 10 so I could make home movies. When I was about 14 I used a karaoke machine that we had to record songs simply at home on cassette. I got a Zoom H4 recorder in college. And in recent years I've used the DAW Reaper which is very reasonably priced compared to other options. And how about to create awareness and a buzz about what you have made? I have mixed feelings on this because there is more indie music out there now than ever and nearly everyone is on social media, where you can reach a lot of people. But it can be difficult to break through the fog. Also I find social media tough mentally, you never know what odd responses you'll receive from people, or if you'll receive any response at all! A lot of the time people are kind but the rare digs can stick in your head. But I think if you work at building a good following on your platform of choice it can be rewarding in the long run. What are the pros and cons of being based in Cork for a musician? There are plenty of music heads here who ap...

Composition by Eric Powell. "My goal in creating Please_wait was to embrace the theme of "obsolete sounds" on as many levels as possible. After selecting the sound of a Siemen's ventilator–a rather rattly, yet sustained sound, I decided to use that everyday whirr to create a lush, choral, drone-y piece. I felt the best way to do that was to combine the fan sound with some kind of chime or bell. I happened to have a couple salvaged rotary telephone bells (another obsolete sound) in my studio, and I composed the piece using a now-obsolete computer and software system–a circa 2007 iMac running Logic Pro 8 with a c.2005 Zoom H4 as the recording device/audio interface. Obsolescent sounds meet obsolescent technology. "Please_wait uses convolution reverb to play the sounds of the ventilator 'through' the sounds of the telephone bells. In addition to this process, I used a small amount of pitch shifting and amplitude control to shape the piece. However, I didn't edit or trim any of the recordings, as I wanted the piece to explore how the handling sounds (i.e. switching the technology on or off) found in both the source recordings, and my recordings of the telephone chimes--something I think many field recordists choose to remove from their files as 'unwanted' sounds, yet are in fact a big part of how we hear our recording technology--would interact in the convolution process. The end result is a little unsettling, I know. Part of my love for this piece comes in how the harmonics of the two telephone bells grind up against each other as they vibrate through the sound of the ventilator: drifting from tonal conflict, to resolution, and back again. "As a last step in embracing old or disappearing sounds, I bounced/rendered the piece out in .mp3 format before upconverting it into .wav. An intentional move to capture some of the unique lossy characteristics of a disappearing format." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening.

In this episode, Drew covers points and gives updates from his new book. Don't take for granted the ones you love and no matter how difficult life gets, the first thing we can do, is be nice to each other. Yeah, I know it sounds ridiculous, but what's so hard about not taking your pain out on other people? It's important to have positive outlets, positive relationships, and positive daily habits. Don't do what I did, and end up living couch to couch and in your car, while racking up mountains of debt. Please, enjoy this episode. I usually shut off the background music, but I left it on today.

I avsnittet hör du låten "Americana Falls" av Kirk Pearson and BIT (CC BY) nedladdad från freemusicarchive.org.
Also musste eine neue Lösung her...

Unless your entire cast are working remotely, you’re going to need a place to record your Audio Dramas. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer here, and there are a lot of factors that come into play. You’ll have many things to take into consideration regardless of where you plan to set up your ‘studio’, and that’s the purpose of this episode.Recording at HomeYou need to decide if you’re purely focused on recording voices, or if you’re working ‘around the mics’If it’s the former, you’ll want sound dampened conditions. This will benefit your audio quality in post-production.Are you setting up a permanent or semi-permanent studio?External walls can be an issue. Is your neighbour a drummer?Windows – do you have a busy road or environment outside?Does the floor creak when you walk around?Internal noise, are you in cupboard with boiler or gas meter?Other noises around the home, like the fridge. Hello good people of Earth. Here you will find a podcast in which, for the first time, we record using microphones on the Zoom H4. Unfortunately, the device shit the digital bed (…with zeros, ones, AND number twos…) on the first recording. But we persevered and got a good conversation signed, sealed, and delivered. Furthermore, we figured out a low budget method of sound-boarding (…it’s like water boarding but for your ears and, perhaps, not so tortuous…) and music-playing with Jen connecting her phone to our bluetooth speaker then putting her microphone next to said speaker. It’s an indication of things to come when we can afford proper microphones, integrated hardware and software, and our own recorder. Given our standard vocal mics (…borrowed from a cappella groups past, thank you very much M.L. and Evolushun…), Jen needed to remember to always hold the thing like an ice cream cone, or, better yet…well, a penis. As one’s head moves, so must one’s microph…allus. Additionally, Kate thought the mics were laser lights. So that was fun times. So what about the booze?! Greg has Southern Tier Compass, and gives it a resounding thumbs up. It is bottle conditioned imperial sparkling ale brewed with rose hips and citrusy hops. Fun, huh? ABV: 9.0% Very fun! Jen enjoys Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, which is the best cheapest IPA on the market by fucking far. Don’t let the “cheapest” dissuade you, it stands up to much more expensive beers, but it’s in the vicinity of $5 for a 22 ounce bottle at our local grocery store. This has become our “go to” IPA. So what about the episode?! We explore locals ordering “Eye-talian” food using a pseudo-accent at the Olive Garden; Paul McCartney whoring himself out to play shitty, uncreative chords under Kanye West’s auto-tuned vocals (Four Five Seconds, click at your own risk, particularly if you have even a modicum of respect for Sir Paul); Greg’s preference for Yoko Ono over Kanye West (…who seems to be Paul McCartney’s Yoko Ono…); and the wonderful & hilarious Sister Veronica-Pooh Nash Poleate with her sound advice (ambiguity intended) for Summer beach vacationers. The featured intro music is composed and performed by a dear friend R.J. It’s called “I Can Read Your Mind.” The outro music is the “That’s the Shark’s House” remix, brilliantly done by Brett from LA. Nothing like a good viral video remix to get you in the mood for fun! So listen, and have some. Fun, that is. And booze. (BTW, we did not heed Sister Poleate’s advice and obviously did not get ate up by a shark during our recent vacation to South Cackalacka, though we spent plenty of time in the ocean.) -G

Hi, and welcome to the Open Licensed Music Podcast, the show where we highlight music from artists who let you share their music. All ten sounds in this set are available from FreeSound and are licensed under the CC0 license. This week's episode is entirely CC0-licensed. You should really check it out - it's a very cool extremely permissive license that I'm a huge fan of which, in my opinion, is very much underused. I've linked to it in the notes for this episode. The artists this week deserve some major kudos for taking open licensing that far.Quiet Spring Woodland Ambience (0:59 @ 19:49)DeepWoodsBirdApril142012 (2:42 @ 20:43)forest spring birds windy 3bft 1pm (9:40 @ 23:19)SummerInsectChorus (1:20 @ 32:54)chimes_part_3 (0:17 @ 34:09)Muchty Chimes x3 (8:16 @ 34:15)That was Quiet Spring Woodland Ambience by ecfike, DeepWoodsBirdApril142012 by kvgarlic, forest spring birds windy 3bft 1pm by klankbeeld, SummerInsectChorus by kvgarlic, chimes_part_3 by dADDoiT, and finishing up was Muchty Chimes x3 by 3bagbrew. Set your location, time and date you want to view from, and it'll show you what's visible in the sky and where it is. It can tie in with computerized telescopes to aim them, it can show you where satellites and the International Space Station are, and you can even connect it to projectors if you want to build a full planetarium. It's just a really cool program. It's available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. Ity finally happened. We lost a recording. We were recording the episode covering The one with the List, the eigth episode of season 2. Josh over jesticulated and knocked the Zoom H4 of the desk and half the episode was lost. So, the fist half is the second take. The rules of podcasting mandate that we say the lost portion was awesome and unbelievablely funny. Don't worry though, We have a new full epsode for you, lost recording or not. Melissa and Josh discuss making a list to come to a decision, and what you should do with that list. HINT: Throw it away! We mock the idea of Mocklate. Then everything works out for Ross and Rachel... for a whole 45 seconds. Making this episode of Friend the most Empire Strikes Back of all that we have watched so far. You can reach us at theonewirthpodcast@gmail.com or call 316-361-6081. The episode ends in celebration because KSGooner gave us our third review in the iTunes store. Thanks KSGooner, we really appreciate it.
You may need to turn up the volume this week as the recording is a little quiet. I would like to blame the ZOOM H4, but it was all my fault. Don't worry next week everything will be back to normal. Still, this is a great episode because it is the first Thanksgiving episode. Please send email to theonewithpodcast@gmail.com.
It’s time to get started in podcasting. I start off talking about headsets in general - Plantronics do nice ones. DISCLOSURE: Most of the links to purchase are AFFILIATE LINKS. I’ll get a commission if you end up buying the product. This helps me to feed my children. If you don’t want his to happen just use Google. For a good condenser microphone – take a look at the Samson C01U. Get it from Dolphin Music (UK). The Blue Snowball is another condenser microphone worth considering. You can buy this from Apple Store (UK), Dolphin Music (UK). Both these mics plug straight into your computer via USB. I talk about the Shure SM58 - this is a popular, robust dynamic microphone (It’s the one I use on this podcast). Bear in mind with this mic that you’ll need something to plug it into - it has an XLR plug that won’t plug directly into your computer. You’ll need an XLR to USB interface, a mixer or a separate audio recorder with XLR inputs such as the Zoom H4. Purchase the SM58 from Dolphin Music (UK).
Back to “A Trio of Podcasts” Read Curtis Fox’s Manifesto: “On Podcasting” A Favorite Episode of Nick’s: Aftermath From the company headquarters of Aftermath, Inc., amidst a strip of bland office buildings in Chicagoland, Tim Reifsteck makes his living cleaning up after the darkest side of human society. I chose this episode because it definitely illustrates a lot of my favorite editing tricks. Produced with Laura Kwerel. About Love & Radio A large part of Love & Radio’s style has been inspired by watching too much television and too many movies. In those visual mediums, the editor acts as a kind of character–every editing choice is right there on the screen. But in radio, we’re both blessed and cursed with an ability to hide the entire editing process: whole phrases are moved around, breaths are added and taken away, and the whole time our listeners are kept in the dark. These days, I’ve been primarily focused on figuring out how to translate some of those visual editing ideas into a non-visual medium. To that end, I try to make my edits obvious and sometimes rough and intrusive. I’ll intentionally cut out room tone, or add coughs, lip smacks, and other audible detritus to indicate when an edit has taken place. Another trick is to end a region by “fading up” instead of fading out–depending on your ambience, it creates a neat sort of reverse-cymbal crash sound and gives a nice subtle pop. It’s a lot like turning the seams inside out on a piece of apparel. Phil Dmochowski, who helped produce several episodes last year, once said public radio needed to take more cues from glitch hop. That statement has always stuck in my brain. I’m not where I’d like to be in that respect, but I always try to keep in mind what a radio interview would sound like if it were edited by Prefuse 73. Tech Info for Love & Radio I use an HHB Flashmic, but more recently have been using a Zoom H4. The Flashmic is undoubtedly better, but I love working in stereo. Most phone interviews are done with a Broadcast Host. Voicemails are recorded using simplevoicebox.com. Related Links Love & Radio

Once again I'm starting another module. This one is called Cinematic Storytelling and its about using visuals to tell the story. The final product for this class is either a script, if we're creating a narrative film, or a documentary proposal.I just got a Zoom H4 and I have few things to say about it. I'm using it for the next few episodes, so you can expect me to update my impressions. We've learned some important details about the requirements for our final project. More importantly the class is given a couple of writing exercises that, for me at least, releases me from writer's block. It all comes down to collecting ideas and then refining them until they're in sharp focus.Grammar Girl has a great episode on writing tips and dealing with writer's block. Check out episode 56. I like this show because it's interesting and practical. I learn a lot about writing clearly and it's pretty painless.I also heard on a recent episode of Digital Production Buzz a link to an HD Production Workflow Tips. This is a great show to listen to if you want to know what other people are doing in digital video production right now. I haven't had a chance to review the tips yet, but the guy who produced it sounded experienced and knowledgeable.

In today's show I play around a bit with the Zoom H4 recorder. I mention that there are 3 setting for volume. You can adjust many increments in addition to those three. I mention that if you have an issue with finding a quiet area, you already do. It's called YOUR CAR. I like the Zoom H4, I like its size, its battery, and the ability to record from XLR and 1/4." It has built in compressors and automatic recording level. I compare it to the Marantz MD660. The Zoom H4 doubles as a portable recorder AND a USB interface for recording. It also has a built in 4track recorder (great for musicians working on songs). The Zoom H4 is roughly $300. The Marantz MD660 is closer to $600 Last 5 in 5 From Brian and www.dimacast.com Blowing Smoke (google could not find this pdcast) Accidental Creativehttp://www.samedaymusic.com/mc--518373 Today in iPhonewww.todayiniphone.com The Rogues Galleryhttp://www.thedividingline.com/rg Podholes http://www.podholes.com/ Intro from Big Al Wagner of www.projectstudionetwork.com one of my favroite podcasts.
