BIPOC communities have always had to incorporate a level of racial awareness into their parenting roles. And with the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, many white families were forced to have conversations about race, privilege and oppression for the first time. Whether you are continuing a lifetime of consciousness-raising for yourself and your family or just becoming aware of how deep and wide systemic racism really goes, there is something for you in our interview with therapist and somatic social justice practitioner Nat Vikitsreth. It's our job as parents to prepare our kids to be autonomous adults: we're getting them ready to not only protect and provide for themselves, but function peacefully in a society with others who are different. Nat founded Come Back to Care, Inc. for parents who want to transform from Autopilot to Bold, Conscious, and Decolonized (ABCD) parenting...most of the time (because life is real and perfection isn't). Nat supports parents to be exactly all of who they are so they can intentionally build the family they've always wanted. We experience pressure from all directions to raise our kids in exactly the right way, but Nat's message is that these ideals are just as damaging as any other parenting mistake. This racial reckoning has brought to light how much we have to influence our children's attitudes about social justice and oppression. Instead of turning that into more fear and anxiety, we can choose to be courageous and breach those tough topics with a little imperfection and a lot of love.
