In this episode of Referrals Done Right, Scott sits down with David Peterson and Alex Shattuck for a deep conversation about what it actually takes to scale a business without becoming trapped by it. Drawing from their own experiences building multiple high performing agencies, David and Alex break down the hard lessons they learned through failure, burnout, recruiting struggles, and leadership growth. What started with door knocking, long hours, and constant chaos eventually evolved into businesses built on systems, specialization, delegation and intentional team buildingThroughout the conversation, they challenge many of the common beliefs business owners hold about scaling. Instead of trying to do everything yourself, they emphasize the importance of replacing yourself piece by piece so you can focus on the work that actually moves the business forward. From hiring assistants and building specialized teams to changing your mindset around investments and leadership, this episode is packed with practical insights for anyone looking to create more freedom, profitability, and long term growth. We Discuss:• Why most business owners stay stuck by trying to do everything themselves• The importance of building specialized teams instead of relying on generalists• How investing in people, systems, and support creates long term freedom• Why recruiting and onboarding are the foundation of scalable growth• The mindset shifts required to stop operating like an employee and start thinking like a true business owner---Episode Markers:(0:00) - Show Start & Introduction---Scale & Profit Links:Website - https://www.scaleandprofitseminar.comCoach P Website - https://coachpconsulting.comAutopilot Website - https://www.autopilotrecruiting.comCoach P IG - https://www.instagram.com/coach_p_consulting---Scott Grates' Links:Referrals Done Right - https://www.referralsdoneright.orgReferrals Done Right FB Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/296359076662332Scott Grates Website - https://www.scottgrates.comLove Living Local - https://www.instagram.com/lovelivinglocal315Scott's FB - https://www.facebook.com/scott.grates.1Scott's - https://www.instagram.com/scottgratesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@scott.grates
Ronnie Barnett was a rock journalist in Houston when he met Kim Shattuck, then bassist for the Los Angeles band the Pandoras, and their fates intertwined. Soon Barnett was living in L.A. and playing bass in the Muffs, Shattuck's new pop-punk band in which she played guitar and applied her impassioned vocals to her tight, tuneful songs. The band had a strong three-album run with Warner Bros., though its most famous song became its punked-up cover of Kim Wilde's “Kids in America” that played over the opening credits of 1995's Clueless yet never was released as a single. Amid more acclaimed albums, Shattuck took a brief detour as the Pixies' bassist. Sixteen days before the October 2019 release of the Muffs' final studio album, No Holiday, Shattuck died at age 56 from complications of ALS, news that shocked and devastated the many who loved her and her music. Barnett takes us through the thrills and heartbreak of his life with Shattuck and the Muffs—and offers some record-collecting notes because he's that kind of guy. (Photo by Tommi Cahill)

Composer, filmmaker, and Supernatural Sounds founder Randy Shattuck joins us to talk about crafting "music for the heart of the story" and why he wants access as early as the script stage. We dive into "temp love"—that dangerous attachment to placeholder tracks that directors can never quite shake—and how it can sabotage your final score if you're not careful. Randy also shares how his ukulele-driven album "While My Ukulele Gently Weeps" proves that a simple uke can sometimes deliver more emotional truth than a wall of guitars. In a time when scoundrels abound and corruption is rife, the need for resistance is critical. This is no time for fence-sitting and twiddling thumbs. Throughout history, people have fought and defeated autocracy by organizing with allies to challenge, disrupt, and roll back unfair rule. We are in such a moment now, as power is being centralized and the rule of law and decency are being undermined. The odds may seem too difficult, but perseverance and collective action can be effective. Through resistance, authoritarian rule can be rolled back. Historian Howard Zinn reminds us," The power of tyranny is overestimated and can be overcome by the unity and the determination of apparently powerless people."

The History of Sound is the award-winning book by Ben Shattuck, set to hit the big screen this month with its highly anticipated film adaptation.
In this episode, hosts Zack Nowak and Derek Read sit down with 2025 USA Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Zach Parise to explore one of the most undervalued, yet game-changing, skills in hockey: net-front play.Parise shares stories from his youth hockey days, his development at Shattuck-St. Mary's, and the lessons passed down from his father that shaped his relentless work ethic and leadership. He walks through what it takes to succeed in tight spaces, from mastering screens, tips, and rebounds to understanding timing, positioning, and mentality at the crease.Listeners get an inside look at how Parise practiced his craft, from driveway puck sessions and three-on-three games at Shattuck to his “stop at the net” habits that carried into an NHL career defined by grit and consistency. Coaches will also gain insight into how Parise now teaches those same habits to young players, emphasizing detail, repetition, and fun in every practice.Whether you're a player learning to battle at the net front or a coach looking to teach scoring in the hard areas, this conversation delivers practical takeaways on how to create offense where goals are really scored, within five feet of the crease.Join the discussion on X: @USAHockeyCoach
In this powerful and deeply personal episode of the I Am Dad Podcast, host Kenneth Braswell sits down with Dr. Dominick Shattuck, a community psychologist, researcher, and thought leader in men's health and masculinities. From recounting a terrifying incident where his daughter was bitten by a copperhead to unpacking the structural failures of our health systems, Dr. Shattuck opens up about fatherhood, masculinity, and the urgent need to prioritize men's health as a public health issue. They talk about why men often don't seek care, the stigma around vulnerability, and how being emotionally and physically available is the most important trait a father can model. With honesty and insight, this episode challenges traditional narratives and offers a new vision for what it means to be a healthy, engaged father. Whether you're a dad, a public health advocate, or someone interested in reshaping community health from the ground up, this conversation will leave you thinking differently about manhood and legacy.

Amy knew this book would appeal to Carrie because she is nothing if not a literary weirdo, and she has been since high school when she quoted from Thoreau in her senior yearbook. Despite her hopes that Ben would, like her, have a high school infatuation with Thoreau, he explains that his interest began much later. Even if you don't know anything about Thoreau, if you're a walker or a hiker, you have experienced the unique meditative impact of this activity and can appreciate Ben's insights on it. Ben also has a book of fiction out titled The History of Sound that is a finalist for the Pen/Faulkner prize so we are just really thrilled to have him with us today. And this week, for our recommendations section, we didn't just pick a random topic like asparagus or comas to share books about—we actually continue with the theme of walking. We each share at least 3 books that feature walking, hiking, or being in nature in some meditative way. We have literary fiction, memoirs, essays, and even a romance. The stories in this audiobook collection have subjects as wide as the list of narrators is long, and the result is excellent. AudioFile's Leslie Fine and host Jo Reed discuss how there is not a weak performance, and each narrator is perfectly suited to his or her story. “Radiolab: Singularities,” with its multiple narrators, makes great use of the audio format. Whether it's Zachary Chastain's outstanding dialogue in “August in the Forest,” or Nick Offerman's ominous “Journal of Thomas Thurber,” or some other work, each title leaves a distinct emotional impression. The result is a truly transporting experience. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ben Shattuck is a renaissance man of sorts, which might be why we dedicated the whole episode to him. He wrote The History of Sound, a thought provoking and beautiful collection of short stories that spans the Eastern Seaboard as well as eons of time. Then there's his general store, which, on top of being the oldest general store in the country also boasts an independent bookstore curated by, you guessed it, Ben Shattuck. Join us.
