How did a sunny Southern California suburb become a primary incubator for modern neo-Nazi violence? In this episode, we sit down with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Eric Lichtblau to discuss his groundbreaking new book, *American Reich: A Murder in Orange County, Neo-Nazis, and a New Age of Hate*. We examine homegrown White Terrorist operations, focusing on a deeply disturbing pattern: why White Supremacist military personnel are routinely ignored, allowing them to weaponize and deploy lethal, state-funded training for White Terrorist agendas. We also interrogate one of the book's core themes—Lichtblau's comparison of people classified as White and LGBTQ with people classified as black. During this particular exchange, Lichtblau became acutely defensive, interrupting Gus at every turn. The host resorted to asking the Suspected Racist guest if he "was done?" Lichtblau answered affirmatively, paused for 10 seconds, and then immediately began speaking over Gus again. This discourteous and uncouth conduct prompted Gus to label the behavior a deliberate act of White Supremacy/Racism. Lichtblau claimed this is the first time a non-White person has ever accused him of practicing Racism. First time for everything, I reckon. Tune in for an unfiltered, urgent interrogation of the System of White Supremacy in the Golden State and how White people practice White Supremacy, #COINTELPRO #EndStageWhiteSupremacy #KhalidFlimban #RobertFuller #Suntan #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – [http://paypal.me/TheCOWS](http://paypal.me/TheCOWS) Cash App: [https://cash.app/$TheCOWS](https://cash.app/$TheCOWS) CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Straight White American Jesus
Weekly Roundup: From Neo-Nazi Remigration to Military Christian Nationalism

This week on Straight White American Jesus, Brad and Dan trace the connections between Trump-era immigration policy, rising far-right extremism, and a growing international movement built around the idea of “remigration.” Beginning with unrest at New Jersey's Delaney Hall detention center, they examine former ICE official Greg Bovino's appearance at a European far-right conference and discuss how anti-immigrant rhetoric, Christian nationalism, and white identity politics are increasingly intertwined on both sides of the Atlantic. The conversation explores how language, policy, and political movements reinforce one another—and what it means when American officials and European extremists are drawing inspiration from the same playbook. The episode also dives into new Gallup polling showing declining support for LGBTQ+ rights after decades of gains, particularly among Republicans, and considers how coordinated religious and political campaigns have reshaped public opinion. Brad and Dan connect these trends to battles over schools, charter education, and public funding, while also unpacking Pete Hegseth's efforts to narrow religious representation in the military chaplaincy. They close with a discussion of free speech, the courts' response to the “8647” controversy, and several signs of hope—including a federal court ruling protecting transgender service members and the ongoing celebration of Pride Month. Along the way, they share exciting news about the next chapter of Axis Mundi Media, including new live programming, The Daily Brief, and plans to expand independent coverage of religion, democracy, and power. What punk subcultures can teach us about resisting hate

Across the American West Coast in the 1980s, the burgeoning punk rock and skinhead scenes were much more than just raw music and counterculture fashion — they quickly became contested ground in an ideological battle against white supremacy. Neo-Nazi groups actively targeted these subcultures to recruit alienated kids, and anti-racist punks were forced to step up in response, organizing grassroots community defense networks, confronting extremist infiltration and building alternative spaces rooted in inclusion. Those strategies — forged in clubs, at shows and within tight-knit local scenes — offer a vital, real-world blueprint for confronting today's mainstream political crises, according to a recent panel discussion at UC Berkeley. The May 3 event, which headlined the second annual Jewish Arts and Book Fest hosted by the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, began with a screening of We've Been Here Before, a 2023 documentary short chronicling these subcultural struggles. Following the film, the program brought together the film's director, Jacob Kornbluth, and anti-racist activists Eric Ward, who's featured in the film, and Dion Garcia to explore how lessons from that fringe resistance can help heal a fractured modern society. For Ward and Garcia, the history of that resistance is deeply personal. In their youth, protecting music scenes from infiltration meant building solidarity and making sure marginalized voices were not pushed out. Yet Garcia said that looking back on the intensity of that era, he also remembers its emotional toll.“Hate is a horrible word and it's a horrible thing to carry,” Garcia said. “I don't like carrying that.”The speakers argued that the same divisive tactics that targeted 1980s youth have now mutated into mainstream public discourse. Ward, a leading expert on organized hate, explained that modern antisemitism functions on the far right as a "racialized other,” scapegoating Jewish communities as “puppet masters” of social grievances. Today, Ward warned, society is trapped in a dangerous "sectarian moment" where nuance is erased in favor of absolute polarization, particularly surrounding global conflicts."No one wants nuance," Ward said, critiquing how people today build political identities out of distant tragedies. He noted that such political theater often comes "at the expense of the most actual vulnerable, Israelis and Palestinians, who still have to live in the real world each and every day."Ultimately, the talk underscored that the path forward requires looking past ideological purity and reclaiming the cultural spaces where lonely or alienated individuals seek community. True resistance to racism and antisemitism, the speakers concluded, lies in a shared commitment to contesting these complicated spaces, finding "strange allies" across different backgrounds and strengthening the foundation of an inclusive democracy."I would argue this alliance between those of us who identify in the mainstream and empathy for people who are existing in these kind of fringe subcultures is something that I think we could all work on," said Kornbluth. "I think it's something new to a lot of folks who are thinking about where and how to fight back ... but I think it's a little piece to how we can heal ourselves." The conflict in Ukraine did not start in February 2022; it had started a long while before. The 2014 Maidan coup installed a fascist government led by the followers of WW2 Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera. This coup was actually the first blow in the yet-to-be-declared war against Russia. The coup enraged the people of Crimea and the Donbass, who refused to live in a state ruled by fascists. Crimea held a referendum in which the population overwhelmingly decided to rejoin Russia. Ever since 2014, the Ukrainian military, backed by the fascist Azov battalions, have been bombarding the Donbass republics, killing 14,000 people and terrorising the resistant population all over Ukraine on a daily basis. The conflict in Ukraine is not between Ukraine and Russia. It is a proxy war waged by the neo-nazi Nato alliance, which wants regime change in Russia in order to loot that country's vast resources. Faced with this threat to its very existence, Russia has had little choice but to resort to force, with the twin purposes of denazifying and demilitarising Ukraine. In this war, workers and all of progressive humanity must support Russia, which is waging a heroic fight against the combined forces of imperialism. ---------------------------------------------------- Subscribe! Today's Headlines: Kash Patel somehow made the news again — this time for ordering the FBI to open a stalking investigation against the New York Times reporter who revealed he'd assigned four full-time FBI agents and SWAT personnel to chauffeur his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, to hair appointments, UK events, and personal errands on the taxpayer dime. The investigation was quietly shut down by remaining normal humans inside the FBI, but the audacity is truly staggering. Speaking of audacity, House Oversight Chair James Comer casually floated the idea of pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for her cooperation with the Epstein investigation — the same investigation he's supposed to be running — before adding that he personally thinks it "looks bad," as if that's the bar we're clearing these days. A US soldier was arrested and charged for using classified information about the Nicolas Maduro raid — which he personally participated in — to bet on Polymarket, netting over $400,000 in profits, marking the first indictment of its kind. The DOJ also charged the Southern Poverty Law Center with wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering, alleging it secretly paid members of extremist groups including the KKK and Neo-Nazis — the SPLC says those were confidential informants, a practice that dates back to its founding in the 1980s. Over at the Strait of Hormuz, Iran laid mines to block oil tanker traffic, which is both a ceasefire violation and a logistical nightmare since mines take far longer to clear than just stopping the shooting — and when asked about a timeline for ending the war, Trump told reporters "don't rush me, we were in Vietnam for 18 years," a famously great outcome to invoke. On slightly better news, marijuana was reclassified from Schedule I to Schedule III, giving cannabis companies a major tax break and easier access to banking, though federal legalization remains a pipe dream; the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire was extended three more weeks; the Trump administration is reportedly bailing out Spirit Airlines to the tune of $500 million in exchange for a majority government stake (so much for small government); Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders approved Paramount's acquisition while rejecting an $800 million golden parachute for unpopular CEO David Zaslav — non-binding though, so he's probably getting it anyway; and Trump hired his personal pool contractor to redo the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in a color he's calling "American flag blue," because the federally protected historical landmark that is twelve Olympic pools in size apparently just needs a friend from Germany to call it ugly before it gets a makeover. **In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we are joined by Wendy Via of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism – a former Southern Poverty Law Center staffer – to discuss a new report on the transnational activities of far-right and anti-migrant groups around the world.**We often think of hate and xenophobia as local phenomena, but just like organised violence, the far‑right has become increasingly internationalised. The internet, political crises, and economic uncertainty have allowed extremist groups to learn from one another, share strategies, and normalise ideas that were once relegated to the fringes.Wendy explains how the movement has become more sophisticated in its branding. Neo‑Nazis still exist, but they no longer openly quote *Mein Kampf*. Instead, they speak of "protecting our culture" and "saving our families". The "great replacement" conspiracy theory – once confined to obscure writers – is now pushed by politicians and mainstream commentators, giving cover to unspoken reactionary ideas. We explore the alarming mainstreaming of far‑right politics. In Britain, the Conservative Party has moved from ostracising Enoch Powell to rehabilitating his ideas. In the United States, Trump's open demonisation of Mexican immigrants – "they're rapists" – did not end his campaign; it became a template for others. Across Europe, Latin America, and beyond, leaders have taken cues from Trump, turning immigration into an existential threat. The report also examines the rise of vigilante groups – self‑appointed militias patrolling borders and neighbourhoods. While there is no single centralised command, these groups communicate constantly, learning from each other's tactics. Political leaders who call immigrants "the enemy" provide implicit encouragement, and wealthy figures like Elon Musk amplify hateful rhetoric, attracting young men – the demographic most vulnerable to far‑right extremism.Yet there is hope. Hungary's recent election showed that people can push back against autocracy, even if the new leader remains conservative. Neo-Nazi sentiment has seen a recent resurgence globally, fueled by political polarization, economic disparities, and social grievances. The internet and social media have played a significant role in spreading extremist propaganda, while some politicians' normalization of hate speech has emboldened these groups. Combating this rise requires a multifaceted approach, including education, countering online extremism, promoting social cohesion, and addressing underlying grievances. My guest for this episode of The Influence Continuum was Kelvin Pierce, author of the memoir Sins of my Father: Growing up with America's Most Dangerous White Supremacist. His father, Dr. William Pierce, was a notorious white supremacist and founded the National Alliance, a prominent hate group. Dr. Pierce also wrote the novel The Turner Diaries, which racists widely cite as inspiration for their racist beliefs and actions. Kelvin was subjected to physical and emotional abuse and was taught to believe that Jews and non-whites were responsible for society's ills. Despite the personal abuse he suffered, Kelvin accepted his father's teachings and held onto these racist beliefs as he transitioned into adulthood. It shaped his worldview and interactions with others, even though he didn't openly broadcast these beliefs. Kelvin was able to shed his indoctrination, create the charitable organization "Divine Child Foundation" to help orphans in Georgia, publish his memoir, and live a life of activism and inspiration fighting racism and extremism. Democrats and Republicans may seem worlds apart politically, but both parties are running into a similar problem – getting pushed into uncomfortable positions. Less than a week after election wins across the country, it only took 7 Democratic Senators and one Independent to wipe away the feeling of victory and instead cave to Trump and the GOP's bullying on the government shutdown. Republicans, however, have their own problems as exposed by the rift over Tucker Carlson embracing far-right antagonist Nick Fuentes. This week, Alex is joined by Zohran Mamdani's political strategist, Morris Katz, and twitch streamer and political commentator, Hasan Piker, to break down how politicians can find their backbone again.
