Cherida Fraser, Wellington co-ordinator for the Aotearoa New Zealand sex workers collective spoke to Lisa Owen about how the Prime Minister has ordered a review of vetting processes for parliamentary staff after his Deputy chief press secretary Michael Forbes quit following allegations he recorded intimate audio of sessions with sex workers and was in possession of intrusive photos of women. There were dozens of photos and footage on the former staffer's phone and some appear to have been recorded in public places and shot through windows at night.

There's concerns a former Prime Ministerial staffer hasn't faced charges after allegedly voice-recording sex workers. Michael Forbes has quit as acting deputy press secretary over allegations he took compromising recordings of sex workers, and photos of women he didn't know. A Wellington brothel complained to police last July, who found it didn't meet the threshold for prosecution. Sex Workers' Collective regional coordinator Cherida Fraser says sometimes it's just the tip of the iceberg. PACE Society is a peer-driven organization located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver that provides support, advocacy, and education for current and former sex workers. In late February, they announced they were temporarily suspending services and programming and laying off most staff. PACE's announcement followed a string of closures and service reductions at other organizations serving sex workers and other marginalized women. Jennie Pearson joins us to talk about why these closures happened and what's needed to support women in the Downtown Eastside. She is a PhD Candidate in the Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program at UBC. She is also a volunteer with PACE Society.

Maggie was a librarian in suburban New Orleans, but after an acrimonious divorce she took up sex work; from 1997 to 2006 she worked first as a stripper, then as a call girl and madam. She eventually married her favorite client and retired to a ranch in Oklahoma, but returned to escorting part-time in 2010 and full-time in 2015 after another divorce (this time amicable) and a move to Seattle. She's been a sex worker rights activist since 2004, and since 2010 has written “The Honest Courtesan”, a daily blog which discusses sex work, politics, anarchism, philosophy and other topics. She has also published articles in venues such as Reason and the Washington Post; given innumerable lectures, talks, radio & video interviews; and is frequently consulted by academics and journalists as an expert on sex work.
