From once being labelled “at risk” to earning a PhD, and from becoming a patient-researcher to creating deeply personal films such as Homeless with a PhD and The Prostitute's Daughter, Josette's journey refuses every conventional definition of what a success story should look likeFrom being labelled “at risk” to earning a PhD, from patient to researcher, and from lived adversity to filmmaking, Dr. Josette Pelatan has built a career around one powerful idea: making the unseen visible.There is no easy way to put Dr. Josette Pelatan into a box.She is a filmmaker and producer, an interdisciplinary health scholar and researcher, an educator, storyteller and social-impact entrepreneur. She is also the founder of JosetteXMP Productions LLC, where some of the most difficult chapters of her own life are becoming the material for films that question how society defines success, vulnerability and human worth.Perhaps that refusal to fit neatly into a category is precisely the point.Pelatan's life has repeatedly challenged the labels placed upon her.Her academic story began improbably. Pelatan has spoken about being labelled “at risk,” being placed in special education and leaving high school as a teenager.She later earned her GED and continued through higher education, ultimately completing doctoral work in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso.Her education, however, did more than change her résumé. It changed the way she examined her own experiences.After years of difficult-to-characterise health symptoms, Pelatan became deeply involved in understanding her condition, eventually receiving a diagnosis of relapsing MOGAD. Her experience evolved into research and advocacy around patient expertise and the importance of recognising lived experience as a meaningful form of knowledge.The patient had become the researcher.It is a transformation that captures much of Pelatan's philosophy: make the unseen visible.That philosophy now sits at the centre of her filmmaking.Her documentary in development, Homeless with a PhD, draws from Pelatan's own experience navigating housing insecurity while continuing to research, teach, advocate, create and build a production company.The juxtaposition is deliberately unsettling.A PhD and homelessness are not supposed to belong in the same sentence. Yet that contradiction allows the film to question simplistic assumptions about homelessness and explore its connections with healthcare, disability, mental health, education, housing, identity and dignity.Her other flagship project, The Prostitute's Daughter, turns towards family history. The realism-driven feature explores generational trauma, survival, identity and the reclamation of stories too easily defined by others. Pelatan serves across multiple creative roles, including creator, producer, screenwriter and lead actress.Together, the projects reveal what makes JosetteXMP Productions distinctive: an interest in people who are often spoken about by systems but rarely given ownership of the narrative.Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Pelatan's story is that it refuses the familiar architecture of an inspirational profile.There is no convenient before adversity and after success.Her story is still unfolding.She continues creating while navigating uncertainty. She continues researching while questioning systems. She is developing films while building a company and imagining larger ideas around education, health, housing and human potential.

And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.   15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.   16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.   17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.   18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.   19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.   (This is like the Passover in Egypt for all who stayed in their houses under the blood which was on the doors were saved from the angel who destroyed the first born of Egypt.  But God told them not to go out of their house that night.)   20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.   21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.   Rehab believe in the God of the children of Israel and she did that Word given to her by which she and her whole household were saved by God as a result.

On the afternoon of July 5th, 2012, New Springville schoolteacher Simeonette Mapes-Crupi was found stabbed to death inside her own Staten Island home, just two days before what would have been her fifth wedding anniversary. Her husband, fellow teacher Jonathan Crupi, told police he'd come home to find the house ransacked. The book of Hosea is a poetic story of God’s unfailing love for His bride, the Church. But, the way God calls the prophet Hosea to illustrate this is not exactly what you’d expect. This is a difficult but beautiful book depicting how far Israel had fallen into idolatry and yet how much deeper God’s grace and mercy flows. Our tendency is to listen to our hearts, which deceive us all too well into running after idols that will never satisfy. The Serpent would then have us believe that God will never take us back because of our betrayal, and that if we do want to return to Him, we must earn our way through sinless perfection. The reality is that instead, God provides us everything we could ever need in Himself, He relentlessly pursues us in love to reconcile our relationship simply because of who He is, and He purchases our way out of enslavement to sin when we have no way of doing so in our own strength. Each of these is a way Christ Jesus crushes the head of the Serpent, destroying his lies and ultimately proving that God will triumphantly restore all things, allowing His bride to dwell with Him in joy and peace for all eternity.

The believers at Corinth believe that since they have decided to follow Jesus and he has given them freedom from the bondage of sin, they can do whatever they want. In their culture, just like ours, temptation is all around them, everywhere they go. Temples with prostitutes are seen from any direction, meat sacrificed to idols is being sold in restaurants and marketplaces, and with their freedom they have in Jesus, they tend to give into temptations and sin. Paul says, “Yes, you have freedom in Christ, but not all freedoms are beneficial. The King James Version says they are not all expedient and edifying. Yes, we have been set free from sin by Jesus, but there are other people to think about, and this is what Paul is saying. Don't let your freedom cause others to sin!
