Jennifer Hackett runs Washington Hometown, a mapping company founded in 2009 committed to helping people discover their next adventure and allowing communities to share what makes them special. Most recreation maps and apps emphasize businesses and have only limited information about recreation opportunities. Ms Hackett has taken the opposite approach, creating a high quality data set of recreation resources with information on over 18,000 opportunities in Washington State drawn from more than 160 sources. She uses this to create maps and apps that connect recreation users to opportunities, communities and businesses. She uses this data to support the recreation community with free apps for Apple and Android and web maps targeted to different recreation activities and types of users; provides data to organizations including the Recreation and Conservation Office, ONX and TrakMaps; and creates custom print maps, web maps and apps for clients. Her background includes 16 years with the Defense Department finding creative ways to use available data to answer national intelligence needs and an MS in Resource Management from Central Washington University. She has two children and lives in Ellensburg with her husband. She served on the Ellensburg School Board for over 4 years, but had to resign in the summer of 2020 as she could not devote the time needed to both her business and the school board. My guest this week is Jennifer Dukes Lee. She lives on a 5th generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs and two beautiful humans. She writes books, she loves queso and enjoys singing loudly. Once upon a time she didn’t believe in Jesus, and now He is her CEO. She just released her latest book, Growing Slow: Lessons on Un-hurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl. 4:14 – Jennifer 101 She lives in northwest Iowa. Her husband’s great, great, great grandparents had the original farm. She is a farm wife, even though she never imagined being in that role. 7:40 – Growing fast and slowing down Jennifer is an over achiever, and her personality makes her want to grow things fast. She left her newspaper job to be on the farm with her family. Even though she was in the more peaceful setting of a farm, she kept working hard and was told by a doctor that she was stressed out and “had a hurried heart.” She has since adopted a new way of living. 14:57 – A growing slow year Jennifer began studying her farmland and how seeds grow to find out why some things grow faster and others slower and how seasons affect the farm. 26:50 – Soil of your heart Jennifer says you should take time every day to examine the soil of your heart. Come to God with your hands open and ask him to take some of your burdens or worries. Go through your seasons of life with open hands. 32:52 – Practices to slow down To slow yourself down, there are little things you can do, like not checking your phone at stoplights. Also, don’t multitask. Uni-tasking is better and you have more focus. 36:50 – Remember, reflect, return Jennifer asks me to remember, reflect and return. I also share my struggle with not being as far ahead as I planned. 4:30 – Get to know you Her hype song? Chumbawumba “I Get Knocked Down” Favorite TV show growing up? Three’s Company FEATURED QUOTES “I’m a farm wife, and I didn’t expect to be in this life.” – Jennifer “You can be busy and still go about it with a peacefulness in your heart.” – Jennifer “Take time every day to examine the soil of your heart.” – Jennifer CONNECT: https://jenniferdukeslee.com/ ABOUT JENNIFER: Jennifer Dukes Lee lives on the fifth-generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs, and two beautiful humans. Jennifer Dukes Lee, popular author, speaker, and blogger has learned much from the land. An Iowa farmer's wife, she's embraced deep lessons from God and about her walk with her "CEO" by observing the cycle of seasons, seeds planted, unruly weather, and all-in-all relying on God to bring the harvest. "There's always a harvest," she speaks from experience and confidence. You will love her practical ideas on how to leave "a trail of love of Jesus" as well as how she came to write her latest book— Growing Slow: Lessons on Un-Hurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl Coming out this week. Can't wait! Lovely Jennifer is offering one free copy of this spanking new book. Comment on blog or instagram to be entered! About "Growing Slow": We long to make a break from the fast pace of life, but if we're honest, we're afraid of what we'll miss if we do. Yet when going big and hustling hard leaves us stressed, empty, and out of sorts, perhaps this can be our cue to step into a far more satisfying, sustainable pace. In this crafted, inspiring read, beloved author Jennifer Dukes Lee offers a path to unhurried living by returning to the rhythm of the land and learning the ancient art of Growing Slow. Jennifer was once at breaking point herself, and tells her story of rude awakening to the ways her chosen lifestyle of running hard, scaling fast, and the never ending chase for results was taking a toll on her body, heart, and soul. But when she finally gave herself permission to believe it takes time to grow good things, she found a new kind of freedom. With eloquent truths and vivid storytelling, Jennifer reflects on the lessons she learned from living on her fifth-generation family farm and the insights she gathered from the purposeful yet never rushed life of Christ. Growing Slow charts a path out of the pressures of bigger, harder, faster, and into a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting. Following the rhythms of the natural growing season, Growing Slow will help you: Find the true relief that comes when you stop running and start resting in Jesus Learn practices for unhurrying your heart and mind every day Let go of the pressure and embrace the small, good things already bearing fruit in your life And engage slow growth through reflection prompts and simple application steps Comment on blog or insta to be entered. What if your hurry came to a screeching halt and you discovered in the process that the race to the never-ending, always-moving finish was actually doing you harm? Would you take that as a wake-up and choose to live life differently? Or would you grumble and complain, fighting against the pressure to be still and slow down?Well, for some of us, an abrupt change in the way we do life is simply hypothetical. For others, it has been a firsthand experience, where the unexpected diagnosis, unwanted betrayal, and unanticipated season of change forced our hand at evaluating priorities and redefining values. For Jennifer Dukes Lee, her experience necessitated such a shift in thinking and living on more than one occasion, leading her to discover the beauty of growing slow. We also interview Jennifer Dukes Lee about her new book Growing Slow: Lessons on Un-Hurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl. In our third segment, we talk about gardening, slow cooking, and books that are helping us to lean into the spring "growing" season and Eastertide. About Jennifer: Jennifer Dukes Lee lives on the fifth-generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs, and two beautiful humans. She writes books, loves queso, and enjoys singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. Once upon a time, she didn't believe in Jesus; now he's her CEO. Have you ever felt ashamed of your body? Maybe it's just when you look in the mirror and see the things you wish could be different. We all have parts of our bodies we wish we could change. I know I do. Some of us may even feel trapped in our bodies. We may even have resigned ourselves to life in a body we don't think we will ever be truly happy with. This episode was inspired by the Body Bliss program created by transformational facilitator and healer Natalie Kristine. In this meditation we will begin the process of shifting your relationship with your body so that you can feel the freedom and bliss that comes from feeling truly at home in your own body. Through their podcast and work, Jennifer and Emmalee strive to make therapy more available and relatable to those who might not have access to traditional therapy and those who are seeking answers to a huge variety of life’s biggest questions. They share how having horrible therapy experiences in the past led them to take their down-to-earth approach with clients and listeners. Plus, they answer why you actually don’t need to listen to your therapists, why it’s important to set boundaries, and why more people should view therapy as preventative versus a last-minute solution. Throughout Season One we teased Karen for showing her trash, and we've thanked her for being "our only listener" as we sorted out mic trouble and got our sea legs with our podcast. BUT Karen, the media has made you something we never wanted you to be. It was funny when you were just an uptight gal with a weird haircut that didn't know how to be chic in public when her order was placed wrong or when your child's soccer coach kept him on the bench. It was funny when "your trash was showing". Sadly, Karen, you're out of control and in our effort to be KIND and CHIC and create a LOVING environment in our homes and in the world... we're going to have to say goodbye. We hope you get a handle on yourself girlfriend. And our apologies to our friends who are actually named Karen. We know that YOU are kind and chic. We'll always be friends.
We often hear that being in a relationship requires tradeoffs and compromises. One of the most challenging compromises nowadays for most working couples around the world, and especially expat couples, is one partner giving up a successful career so that the other partner’s career can thrive. But does it really have to be this way? We know that in the long run this often leads to tensions in the relationship, causing resentment and loss of identity as well as financial vulnerability. Starting a portable business to allow the accompanying partner to also build a source of fulfillment and revenue on the move has been the foundation behind Tandem Nomads’ existence. However, for a business to succeed it needs real commitment. It often happens that expat partners cannot give their full attention to their business, especially when they have children, for the simple reason that they don’t have the right support system, but also because they do not feel supported by their own partner in this venture. In order to discuss these topics and bring you some guidance of how to deal with these dual career challenges, I invited Jennifer Petriglieri, the author of the book “Couples that Work”, a book on how dual-career couples can thrive in love and in work. She will share with you what she learned from interviewing more than 100 couples and her big tip on how to make your business a priority, even if you are not the main bread winner. "An expat job is not secure, your business is the backup plan of your family."Jennifer is the Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD where she directs the Management Acceleration Program and the Women Leaders Program. She has been shortlisted for the Thinkers50 New Thinker and Talent Awards and named one of the world’s best 40 business school professors under 40 by Poets & Quants. Jennifer is British, married to an Italian husband - they met in Switzerland, lived in Boston and now in France. Therefore, Jennifer knows a lot about duals career couples that live the global nomadic lifestyle.
