After a summer holiday, the Bible Bash team has returned! This month, Liam takes a look at the story in Numbers 13 and 14 - the story of the Hebrew scouts, which reveals the reason the people were destined to wander for 40 years before entering the promised land. Liam raises important questions: Is this story of the scouts a story of failing faith, as we are so often told, or is it something more? What about Caleb's “different spirit”? Is a brave and unfettered “different spirit” the way into the promised land for all of us? Don offers a reading from Feminist thinkers Rosemarie Tong and Tina Fernandes Botts. Liam and Don are taking a little break over the summer to research, relax, and reboot. In this episode you will hear Another Text shared by Pastor June. You will hear an excerpt from a recent Pride Service. We're honored to have a special guest this week to share a reading as our "other text." Reverend Junia Joplin has provided an excerpt from a recent sermon delivered to her congregation during Pride on the second anniversary of her coming out. More about Junia Joplin - After 20-plus years in Baptist ministry, Rev. Junia Joplin (she/her) now serves on the clergy team at the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto - a vibrant, inclusive, and progressive faith community and human rights church. Junia is either a basic suburban hockey mom or a sign of the apocalypse, depending on who you ask. We look forward to having Junia join us for a full episode soon. In the meantime, if you'd like to learn more about her work, here's a link to Junia's personal website and a link to the full sermon from which her reading was selected." This month, Don takes a look at the story of Thomas, the disciple often referred to as “doubting Thomas,” in the gospel according to John. In his reading of this story, Don presents a rather revolutionary interpretation of Thomas and his reaction to the disciples' claim that they have seen their teacher, Jesus. Through his refreshing take on the story, Don invites us to consider the Thomases among us, now. We can question: are we like Thomas? Liam, for one, energetically, if not sadly, claims to be a Thomasite. Give a listen and find out why. Following the discussion, Liam offers a reading - a prayer, in fact - from the Jewish Mishkan T'filah for Travelers, A Reform Siddur (or prayer book). Produced by the Central Conference of American Rabbis I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no services. But I need them. Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love. As I reach upward in prayer, I sense these qualities in my Creator. To love God is to love each other, to work to make our lives better. To love God is to love the world God created, and to work to perfect it. To love God is love dreams of peace and joy that illumine all of us and to bring that vision to life. In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. Is the story of Esther the first documented intersectional justice uprising? In this month's episode, Don and Liam join the Saturday morning Torah study class at Liam's Shul, where they curate a rousing liberation-themed discussion of the Book of Esther. After all, it is the season of Purim. In the first of what Don and Liam hope will be more “live” shows of the season, Liam invites us to consider the justice-seeking implications in a story that turns on the combined efforts of a whole cast of outcast, marginalized, and vulnerable characters. In the process, Liam offers us an enlightening look at ancient understandings of gender, including a look at the eight accepted gender classifications in Talmudic discussions. -------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. This month, for our Bible Bash entertainment and considerations, Don takes us on a trip through the Christian book of Acts. Don's chosen task: to reflect on the complicated person we know as Paul, based on his behavior throughout these chapters describing the early formation of Christianity. In this journey, Don points us to a Paul who may have experienced a call to conversion, yet nonetheless continues to act (pun intended) as if he is still working for the emperor. We are left to question, is the possible adage “once an imperial thug, always a thug” true … or is Paul simply a good example of a regular, deeply flawed, privileged fellow who has perhaps noble dreams for spreading the gospel? His question prompts at least one other underlying consideration: how do we “read” people - and then respond to them - who claim to seek growth, yet seem so unable to achieve it? Or who claim God speaks to them then act in disturbing ways that call that claim into question? The Other Text Liam offers a Sufi parable from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi's book, Davening: A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Prayer. “There is a story about Juna'id, the ninth-century Sufi master. He has twenty students who each wants to be his successor, and they are arguing among themselves and pressing him for a decision. He is getting older, so finally he says to them, “You go out and each bring a live bird, and I'll tell you what to do.” So they each come back with a live bird, and he says, “Now go find a place where no one can see you, kill the bird, and come back.” They all go off, and nineteen of them come back with dead birds, but the bird of the twentieth is still alive. So Juna'id makes an angry face. “Why didn't you kill the bird!” The disciple says, “Master, I couldn't find a place where no One can see me.”' -------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. Peterson Toscano Zoom bombs the podcast to talk about the love between Jonathan and David, but really he is mostly curious about God in the story. The story of King Saul, Prince Jonathan, and future king David is one filled with desire and jealousy. We hear a lot about Saul's jealousy over David. There is fear of being replaced and of no longer being the big man. A younger, shinier thing captured the people's eyes. And this is exactly what God feels towards Saul when it turns out the people were tired of Judges leading through God and instead wanted a king. God begrudgingly gives them Saul and then slams Saul through the Prophet Samuel over and over. Also, something of note: Verse 20 Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David. According to “Michal is the only woman in the Bible of whom it is said that she loved a man.” The Book of All Books by Roberto Calasso Liam brings “The Other Text” with a beautiful reading of Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants. As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these lenses of knowledge together to show that the awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings are we capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learning to give our own gifts in return. -goodreads ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. We begin the new year, in 2022, with a close reading of the story of the midwives in Exodus 1: 15-21. Liam offers us an invitation to recognize Shifrah and Puah as revolutionary resistors and so much more: namely, co-creators with G-d, The Potter of earthen vessels. Along the way, Liam and Don offer, for our consideration, the idea that we are all potentially midwives of a sort. Even, perhaps, revolutionaries. Following their discussion of the story - including thoughts about changing diapers, and digging up mud for throwing clay - Don offers another text. Don's Other Text: From “Soul Among Lions: Musings of a Bootleg Preacher” by Will D. Campbell © 1999, Westminster John Knox Press, Louisville, Kentucky. pp. 8-9. When you write rare books for a living, paydays are sometimes sporadic Some years ago my wife said one of us had to get out and find a real job. I sensed a preference. Waylon Jennings, a neighbor and old friend, gave me the prestigious position of cook on his tour bus. Waylon is not noted for excessive piety, but I learned an important lesson from him. Late one night I said, “Waylon, what do you believe?” “Yeah,” he answered. On an overnight stagecoach, a conversation need not be rushed. After a long silence I asked, “Yeah? What's that supposed to mean?” Quiet again, until Waylon said, “Uh-huh.” That ended my prying into the state of ole Waylon's soul. Today we are bombarded with a theology of certitude. I don't find much biblical support for the stance of God told me and I'm telling you, and if you don't believe as I do, you're doomed,” A sort of “My god can whip your god” posture. From Abraham, going out by faith not knowing where he was being sent, to Jesus on the cross, beseeching the Father for a better way, there was always more inquiring faith than conceited certainty. It occurs to me that the troubadour's response that late night might have been the most profound affirmation of faith I had ever heard. “Yeah. I believe. Don't bother me with all the baggage.' Recently he wrote a song about that long ago conversation. “In my own way I'm a believer,” he sings.* Maybe that's as close as any of us ever get. * From “I Do Believe” by Waylon Jennings. © Waylon Jennings Music. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. For his December Bash, Don takes a close and insightful look at Mark's gospel and Jesus' interactions with James and John, who wish to be seated at Jesus' side and share in his glory. Or, so they say when they ask Jesus to do something for them. In his reading, Don peels back the layers of this story to expose what appears to be a first-century, discipleship power-grab. And, of course, Don has some thoughts about this, as well as Jesus' revealing response to James and John. After some lively discussion, Liam shares another text: a reading from Steven Charleston's Ladder to the Light: An Indigenous Elder's Meditations on Hope and Courage (Broadleaf Books, 2021). From Ladder to the Light: An Indigenous Elder's Meditations on Hope and Courage: Justice does not just happen. Compassion is not a spectator sport, but something I have to exercise as I roll up my sleeves to do my part in creating a better community.I need to put in my hours as a volunteer. I have to join the prayer crew and put my life on the line to make a difference. The world will change not by wishes, but by the labor of love we call faith. Spirituality is not a spa, but a construction site, where we build hope one heart at a time. ...we need to remember we are here to serve others. This is not all about us and it never has been. It is about community. It is about the tribe of the human beings. We have a constituency as people of faith. There are other human beings and other life forms we work for. They are listening. The poor are listening for the word of justice to give them hope. The lonely are listening for the sound of a caring heart. The abused and broken are listening for the healing sound of mercy. The fearful are listening for a word of truth that can set them free. Many people listening, but what are they hearing? Break their silence with the sound of the words the Spirit has given you. Speak hope and mercy, speak justice and truth, say what you believe that will heal and help. Now is not the time to be quiet, for there is an ocean of listening all around you, waiting for the word of life. What made my ancestors strong, what allowed them to survive, was faith. A faith practiced every day, recreating reality one step at a time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. Diving into Genesis stories again, in this episode, Liam offers us a different view of the so-called Fall story found in Genesis 3. Reading the encounter between Eve and the serpent in a new way, and drawing on Rashi and his commentary on the story, Liam invites us to see the story as a trauma story, first, and then poses the question of who really sinned, Eve or the Serpent. As often happens, Don and Liam raise more questions through the conversation. Still, they invite us to look deeply at our relationship to creation, our relationships with one another, and how we respond to those among us who have suffered the fracturing of trust. Then, as is the Bible Bash custom, Don closes with another text. This time, he shares thoughts from a wise Quaker elder, Dorothy H. Hutchinson. A Painful Discrepancy The basis of Friends' social concerns is the same as the basis of Quakerism as a whole – the belief of the within-ness of God. This is not original with Friends. Many other groups have believe that God is within, as well as above and beyond us. However, the emphasis on the within-ness of God in all human beings, in the capacity of the individual to communicate directly with God, to experience the spirit of Christ and express it in every aspect of life has led us to adopt patterns of behavior which may be considered distinctively Quaker. This is the spiritual basis of the Friends' distinctive form of meeting for worship – waiting in the Light for direct revelation of God's will for us. It is the basis for the distinctive for of meeting for business – seeking unity in the Spirit. And it is the basis for all the social testimonies. For centuries Friends have been exploring the application of this belief in the within-ness of God in all of us to the problems of human relations and the end is certainly not yet. A Quaker social concern seems characteristically to arise in a sensitive individual or very small group – often decades before it grips the Society of Friends as a whole and as much as a century or more before it appeals to the secular world… The concern arises as a revelation to an individual that there is a painful discrepancy between existing social conditions and what God wills for society and that this discrepancy is not being adequately dealt with. The next step is the determination of the individual to do something about it – not because they are particularly well fitted to tackle the problem, but simply because no one else seems to be doing it. In this Bible Bash episode, Don invites us into a closer look at what is going on with Judas when he rails at Mary for wasting expensive perfume on washing Jesus' feet. In other gospel versions of the story, the woman who washes Jesus' feet is unknown to us, but in John's version of events, it is Mary, sister to Lazarus, who performs the intimate act of foot washing. And it is Judas, Jesus' eventual betrayer, who complains. Listen as Don has some things to say about Judas, stealer of the community purse, his self-serving agenda, and Liam offers some thoughts about his own research into this well-known, often superficially read Bible story. In closing, Liam shares some lines from a poem he is working on, “What Place Might Hold Us?,” in which he imagines speaking to his ancestors. (Poem text if you need it/want it) What Place Might Hold Us If we could gather ourselves together somewhere between your time and mine, what place might hold us? Where, and what, is the space between my world and your worlds near enough to bridge the distances and differences, familiar enough for each, and all, to find footing, make a way, carve a seat from earth and stone, grass and shrub, clover and trees, from all our lingering undiscovered longing and, at last, rest? Because I am who I am— alive, walking as I do with a catch in my right hip, struggling these days to work, create, or even open a jar as my Brockman thumbs weaken more and more at the main joint, like my mother's, and my uncles' and their father's (and, likely, his father's and his father's, and his before him); because my left eye squints more than my right when I smile; because I sometimes hear lizards, see wind, grow things, and walk with deer; because the highlands know and call my name; because I refuse to be made other than who I am and have paid for that in deep-running, ancient blood that travels far, flows, submerges and surfaces like mountain springs, through you, in me; because I have worked, made things, dared to live, and died before I was born, more than once, and still I have striven and failed, wrestled and prevailed, grown to hear my name, been changed and learned from my journey-bearing hip, from hard things and been softened; I have seen love is grown, like selfhood, in the daily doing of it; because I have done a few things and dreamed of even more— because I am who I am and I have dared to live, I know you were. I know you were here. I know you have been speaking, are speaking, still— do you know I have been, I am, here learning to listen? What if we could call ourselves together beckoning back as far as the winds, the tree roots, streams, hawks and crickets can carry the rising sounds of our voices— reaching out farther and father, back and back, and back farther still, until our wistful words become ghostly whispers in time-echoing valleys? What space might hold our answering presence? What might we come knowing, bearing wisdom burdens, nearly lost treasures, and deep-veined, living stories in our knotted, life-worn, sometimes weak-thumbed, still ever-grasping hands? What might we ask one another, understanding the needful question is never the one imagined and it makes its way over tongue and teeth as if it has been there—been here—before, desperate to return, emerging in utterance? Would you know me as we draw near, see yourself in my gray-green eyes searching for signs of myself across the ever-thinning veil between Moigh and Georgia, highland and lowland, Franklin and this place, this place and Sinai, and even Eden? What might we say to one another, to all of us gathered, kin to kin, collecting ourselves in blood, bone, and yearning, present and worded into whatever strange, mystical space emerges, able and willing like cradles to hold us? Regardless, because I dared to live, I know you were here. I know you have been speaking, are always speaking, on wind and stream ripples, crow calls, lizard-whispers and always, in dreams. Do you know I have been, I am, here—my world-worn, knotted, working hands grasping, in ground and world, within and beyond this slight, sturdy body, reaching for green growing things and something like joy, place, perhaps understanding, and sometimes life itself. Do you know I am speaking, across the distances and differences— with every new-day, rising up and going forth, catching on my stubborn wrested hip, making my way— with every rising, I am speaking gratitude that you were, that you are ever here that you dared to live. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. In mid-August, Liam and Don were joined by Portland Maine's Poet Laureate, Maya Williams. Maya is not only a creative, gifted spoken word artist and poet, they are also a suicide survivor, theological thinker, and utterly enchanting person. In this episode, Maya shares their poem, “Judas and Suicide,” and offers us a thought-provoking and spiritually penetrating reframing of the traditional religious views of suicidal ideation and suicide. Maya, Don, and Liam then talk honestly and openly about this sensitive topic, as Maya offers us a glimpse of a God who is present in our suffering and accompanies us, rejecting human views of sin and drenching us in grace and loving understanding that the world is, sometimes, a hard place to be. Before closing, Maya offers us another poem to consider. Read about Maya and read Maya's work at https://www.mayawilliamspoet.com/ Maya's other text: Curses, Suicide, and “Just Pray About It” “So the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about two thousand were drowned in the lake.” Mark 5:13 NET I jump off and hold my breath. There on the hillside, a great herd of pigs was feeding. My father asks Can you focus And the demonic spirits begged him, on having fun today at the lake house? There is trouble in your spirit ‘Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them.' Bubbles rev through my nose as I sink. My father says you can't change the past. Jesus gave them permission. He never says that when I describe a positive memory to him. So the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. I want to keep myself from floating up. I try to I hold it all in so the lake can swallow me. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, The coward in me returns for air. My dad affirms curses can be broken. Just pray about it. I did not conjure my depression. I do not tell him there is little to no correlation between prayer and wellness. I ask if we can go swimming again tomorrow afternoon. and about two thousand were drowned in the lake. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. The story of Balaam is a fantastic tale complete with conversations with God, angels with swords drawn, a seemingly stubborn talking donkey, and a seerer's blessings and curses. What if anything can we learn from this story about our relationships to God and to one another? In this episode, Liam takes a look at the ways in which we are conditioned to read biblical texts and asks questions about what it means to miss the angel standing in the road, as well as what it means to be a person who beats the truth-tellers among us. More, Liam asks what might it mean to be the talking, truth-telling ass - and to be repeatedly beaten-up for speaking out. After some discussion, Don offers another text for our reflection. In this month's episode of the Bible Bash podcast, new co-host Don Durham leads us through a deep dive into the layered messages gleaned from Isaiah 56 - the classic text where the prophet proclaims God's favor for foreigners and eunuchs. In his studious way, Don takes us through a short framing history of the distinct periods in the collection of prophetic episodes attributed to the prophet, Isaiah. Don asserts that, not only does this chapter affirm immigrants, strangers, and differently-bodied, gender-transcendent persons, the whole of Isaiah repeatedly proclaims a single unifying message: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17.” For The Other Text Liam reads a passage out of the book, A Year with Thomas Merton: Daily Meditations from His Journals. The reading is accompanied by the song Aim for the Stars by Rand Aldo. It is available on EpidemicSound.com. In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. From his continued curiosity about how we develop theologies that sustain us during periods of disappointment, Liam takes a look at Genesis 3. Regular listeners may recall the Drawing Near episode when Liam shared the story of a Rabbi, at his conversion, asking him, Do you have a theology of disappointment to sustain you when the institution of Judaism and your fellow Jews disappoint you? In this episode, Liam confesses this question continues to pester and inspire him. From the position of thinking through those moments when he disappoints himself, when other people leave him crestfallen, and he feels a bit disconsolate about human nature, Liam takes a closer look at the story of Adam and Eve and their troubling misadventure in the garden of Eden. Afterward, Don offers an other text for consideration—surprisingly, a short paragraph from Liam's book, Trans-Forming Proclamation: A Transgender Theology of Daring Existence. Available NOW! Have you heard the story of Jesus' hissy fit in the temple, turning over tables and ranting about the house of God being a house of prayer for all the peoples? Have you ever wondered what that apparent temper tantrum was all about? In this episode, Don offers his thoughts about the tale as we find in the Gospel of Mark. In his discussion, Don poses the possibility that Jesus was saying the quiet part out loud - really loud, in fact. Give a listen as Don and Liam take a closer look at the story. In this month's episode, Liam and Don take a look at Jesus' teaching on the laborers in the vineyard through the larger story of Jesus engaging with the people. Liam explores the tendency to isolate Jesus' teachings and parables from their story-based, literary contexts. Liam proposes that the author of Matthew's gospel (like the authors of each gospel) intentionally connected the teachings with the events surrounding them. As an example, Liam considers the vineyard teaching in conversation with Jesus blessing the children (Matt 19) as he goes about the towns blessing people, tending the sick, feeding people, and teaching. Don and Liam share some lively discussion about the implications of these teachings, especially when we consider the teachings in the context of the stories about how Jesus interacts with communities. Before closing, Don shares the lyrics to Ani DiFranco's song Coming Up. Musical track Zero Remorse by Jon Sumner from Epidemic Music. Available NOW! In this episode of the Bible Bash podcast, Liam Hooper does a new thing. First, Liam invites listeners to draw near to our new co-host, Don Durham, and invites Don to draw near to listeners as well. We learn a little about Don, who is - among other things - a trained organizational change and transition consultant, and strategic coach helping clients be who they want to be and accomplish what they want to accomplish. Don is also an ordained minister who runs a small farm where he grows food to give away and hosts a podcast about what people are doing to end hunger. Don and Liam then weave into their conversation a deeper look at the complicated story between Joseph and his brother, especially, Judah. What does the Hebrew phrase, vayigash, mean? And why does the text tell us that Judah, who is already in close proximity to Joseph, draws near to him? What can we learn from this text about our own sometimes complicated paths to one another, more relationally, and what can we learn about our positions as would be allies and receivers of ally-ship? Listen in as Liam and Don offer some thoughts on these questions. At the close, as we do, Don offers another, non-Biblical text, a Wendell Berry poem, A Dance. To find out more about Don Durham, follow these links: farm: https://healingspringsacres.org/ podcast: https://welcometothetablepodcast.com/ coaching: https://healingspringsacres.org/coaching/ A Dance by Wendell Berry The stepping stones, once in a row along the slope, have drifted out of line, pushed by frosts and rains. Am I my brother's keeper? Cain asks G-d after killing his brother. In Sunday and Sabbath Day school's this story of fratricide turns into a simple moral tale, but as always Liam Hooper takes us deeper. He explores the ways G-d probes and seeks to draw out Cain. Peterson Toscano takes on the biggest clobber passage of them all, Genesis 19 and the story of Sodom. We all know the "sin of Sodom" is not man on man action, aka homosexuality or sodomy. Peterson provides a close reading of the text to demonstrate that this story has nothing to do with "the gays" and really it is not even about hospitality. In fact, the story has much more to do with the 911 attacks in the USA and America's reaction to the terrorism. Peterson recognizes the contributions Rev. Tyler Connoley made through his article Living in Sodom published in 2015 for the UCC Southwest Conference blog. Liam Hooper shares the "Other Text," a reading from Day by Day Reflections of Themes of the Torah from Literature, Philosophy, and Religious Thought by Rabbi Chaim Stern. For the first ever LIVE Bible Bash, Peterson, Liam, and guests, take on the topic of Biblical Bottoms. Who is a bottom in the Bible and what does that even mean?? We talk bottoms, tops, subs, doms, power bottoms, agency, consent, and much more. Hear about Jonah, Hagar, Samson, Delilah, and others. It is a fun, informative, and insightful conversation. This episode is very different from previous ones. In mid-December 2020 Bible Bash held the very first LIVE on-line event. It was a chance to converse with listeners while discussing a topic--Biblical Bottoms in the Bible! As a result, we had many voices contribute to the conversation. For the "Other Text, Peterson's husband, Glen Retief, read, The Museum of Stones, a poem by Caroline Forché. (Copyright © 2007 by Carolyn Forché. Originally published in The New Yorker) Glen is the author of the Lambda Award winning memoir, The Jack Bank. Another difference you will find in today's show is the sound quality. Since we conducted this meeting on Zoom, the quality is not the typical Rock Candy Production standard audio. It is such a rich conversation though, we hope you will not be distracted by the click and zips that happen at some points. Enjoy this presentation which was recorded live on December 15, 2020. By taking on Hosea 11:9 Avery Smith, host of Blessed Are the Binary Breakers podcast, cracks open a rich discussion with Bible Bash co-hosts, Liam Hooper and Peterson Toscano. Avery writes: "I interpret God's declaration For I am God and not a man in Hosea 11:9 as, among other things, evidence of Their rejection of being assigned a human gender and the roles implied therein." Could God be making a declaration of gender? What is Hosea the prophet trying to do and say to the people? And what about God's radical swings from tenderness to threats of violence? In addition to covering these topics and more, Avery highlights best practices for ministers and places of worship when addressing non-binary people by name and pronoun. The entire conversation is fresh, insightful, and a lot of fun. Avery also presents, The Other Text, their poem, Binary Breaker from their book of poetry, the kin-dom in the rubble: a queer Christian's wrestling with God, scripture, and humanity. Born and raised in Ohio, Avery Smith studied various languages at the University of Alabama. They attended Louisville Seminary and now resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with their wonderful wife and two cats. You can often find Avery translating Biblical texts and ranting about Hebrew to no one in particular. A firm believer that binaries were made to be broken, Avery is both Catholic and Protestant. They also believe that Divinity thrums through all of Creation and breathes life into every human community, not just Christian ones. This belief led them to start up Blessed Are the Binary Breakers, a multi-faith podcast of transgender stories. Avery ran an advice blog at queerlychristian on tumblr, and creates work centered around transgender theology and disability theology. Links to all of their work can be found at blessedarethebinarybreakers.com. Announcing LIVE on-line Bible Bash Event! Peterson shares the story of "the man with the pitcher of water," who appears in Luke 22:10 (also Mark 14:13 Matthew 26:18, 19 "a certain man.") This is someone who breaks gender and class rules. We do not know all the reasons, but somehow Jesus knew to look out for this gender transgressor and gender transcendent person. While the passage is short, and we never learn the person's name, this moment serves as an essential incident in what is known as Passion Week for some Christians. This person leads the disciples to the place where the Last Supper occurs, which is commemorated during Holy Communion today. Peterson references Mx. Chris Paige and their book, Otherwise Christian, A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation. You will also hear about Liam's soon to be released book, trans-forming proclamation: A Transgender Theology of Daring and Existence. Liam joins in for a lively discussion about cisgender gays and lesbians who latch onto then later renounce gender differences in their own life, confusing and conflating gender and orientation. Liam then shares the "Other Text," and reads from Angela Davis' collections of essays and speeches, Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement. Liam Hooper takes on the "gayest" passage in the Christian Bible, the story of the Roman Centurion and the healing of his personal servant. Does this text condone gay sex? Gay relationships? Slavery? Liam deepens the significance of the passage by connecting it to the narrative that comes immediately afterwards: Jesus raising a widow's only son from the dead. See Luke 7:1-17 Peterson joins in the discussion as they look at queer readings of ancient texts, privilege, white supremacy, and the central role relationships have in the texts they are discussing. For the "Other Text" Peterson reads an excerpt from Mary Renault's novel, The Persian Boy. Alexander the Great and his lover, a eunuch from Persia, travel back to the eunuch's homeland. Peterson Toscano recounts the epic story of a "day in the life" of Jesus and the disciples as found in Mark chapter 5. There we see a demon possessed man, a herd of pigs, really pissed off towns people, and very frightened disciples. As an actor, Peterson is curious about the backstory of "the man who dwelt amongst the tombs." What brought him to this place in his life? What trauma did he experience that he feels safe among the dead while avoiding family and friends?" This raises questions for Liam about the way queer people, particularly trans people are treated by society and family. The story continues on the other side of the lake where Jesus and the gang encounters an important man with power and privilege and an outcast person suffering in body and mind. Peterson and Liam talk about the many shifts in the narrative as Jesus refuses to play the game where society defines who deserves attention and who gets overlooked. The woman who has been hemorrhaging for 12 years ultimate finds healing, affirmation, and praise. Liam follows up with "another text," a prose poem by Mary Oliver. He reads Thirst. Liam shares his insights about I Kings 17-7-24. Elijah, a prophet with an unpopular message who finds himself destitute during a famine. A widow prepares a last meal for her son before they both die. While serving as Activist in Residence at Susquehanna University, Peterson Toscano co-preached a sermon with chaplain Rev. Scott Kershner, and then recorded their conversation for Bible Bash podcast. Going back and forth they discuss Matthew chapter 3, the story of John the Baptist in the wilderness. John is an outrageous character in the way he dresses, where chooses to do ministry, and in his bold, direct, and highly critical message to the leaders of his day. Now John himself had [f]a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan; 6 and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (NASB version from Biblegateway.com) Peterson sees modern connections in John the Baptist with the work that performance artists and climate activists like Greta Thunberg do. Famously the Swedish teen stood up in front of world leaders at the United Nations and railed against them. "This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you! "You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you! Scott and Peterson point out WHO the prophets John and Greta speak to--leaders who have power over many people. They are not simply demanding individual repentance from citizens, they preach directly to leaders in order to change the world to go in a new direction. Liam ends the show with "Another Text" and reads from the introduction of Winona LaDuke's book, All Our Relations. From winonaladuke.com Winona LaDuke is one of the world's most tireless and charismatic leaders on issues related to climate change, Indigenous rights, human rights, green and rural economies, grass-roots organizing, local foods, alternative sources of energy and the priceless value of clean water over a career spanning nearly 40 years of activism. Trigger Warning: This show contains references to sexual assault and extreme violence which comes directly out of Genesis chapter 34. (Who said the Bible is "family-friendly?") Liam Hooper takes on a difficult text: Genesis 34 which tells the story of Dinah, the daughter of Leah and of Jacob. One day Dinah, a young woman of marrying age, leaves the family compound on the edge of a Hivite settlement to visit the women of the region. According to the writer of the account: 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the region, saw her, he seized her and lay with her by force. 3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the girl, and spoke tenderly to her. 4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this girl to be my wife.” This sets off a string of bloody events, intrigue, and depending how you look at it, a heroic or horrific response. 9 Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 You shall live with us; and the land shall be open to you; live and trade in it, and get property in it.” 11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor with you, and whatever you say to me I will give. 12 Put the marriage present and gift as high as you like, and I will give whatever you ask me; only give me the girl to be my wife.” 13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become as we are and every male among you be circumcised...25 On the third day, when they were still in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came against the city unawares, and killed all the males. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away. 27 And the other sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. For Liam this passage raises troubling questions. The brothers and the teller of the tale emphatically state Shechem rapes Dinah, but is it possible Dinah gives her consent to Shechem? Are the brothers offended because their sister is "defiled," or because she chose her own lover and husband without their consent? How does class, ethnicity, and tribe play in this display of extreme violence by the aggrieved brothers against every male in the city? What might Dinah have to say about all of this since none of her words or reactions are ever mentioned in the text? And how does this ancient text mirror the race-based terrorism gangs of white men poured out on African-Americans when they accused a Black man of being sexually or romantically inappropriate with a white woman? Liam admits he has more questions than answers. Peterson Toscano joins the discussion, adds even more questions, and reveals the confusing feelings he had as a child when he was sexually assaulted. The honest discourse and deep questions invites listeners to contribute their own thoughts, feelings, and insights. Special guest, Joy Ladin, joins Liam Hooper and Peterson Toscano for a moving and insightful exploration of the Book of Jonah. Joy Ladin holds the Gottesman Chair in English at Yeshiva University, and, in 2007, became the first (and still only) openly transgender employee of an Orthodox Jewish institution. In her book, The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective,Joy writes, “I don't mean to suggest that the Book of Jonah is about being transgender. The Book of Jonah is about being human. But transgender experience is human experience, and questions transgender people face are questions that we all face. Everyone, transgender or not, has to decide what parts of ourselves we will and will not live. Each of us has to decide when we can't and when we must sacrifice our individuality for the sake of our families and communities, when we have to be what others count on us to be, and when, like Jonah, we have to live the truths that set us apart from others and reveal to the world what we have only revealed to God.” (from Soul of the Stranger, page 7. Quoted by Mx. Chris Paige in the fabulous new book, OtherWise Christian—A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation.) You can study the Torah with Joy Ladin through the TransFaith Institute. We are excited to announce that Dr Joy Ladin will be returning to the Transfaith Institute for a 4-session seminar on Wednesdays at 1pm Eastern/10am Pacific beginning July 31, 2019! The LIVE sessions will also be recorded and added to the Ruzuku course room for participant review. Joy Ladin's memoir, Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders, was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award; her recent book, The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective, is a for a Lambda Literary Award and Triangle Award finalist. She has also published nine books of poetry, including, most recently, The Future is Trying to Tell Us Something: New and Selected Poems. Her work has been recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Fulbright Scholarship, an American Council of Learned Societies Research Fellowship, and two Hadassah Brandeis Institute Research Fellowships, among other honors. A nationally recognized speaker on trans and Jewish identity, she serves on the Board of Keshet, an organization devoted to full inclusion of LGTBQ Jews in the Jewish world.
