Welcome to episode 58 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, where Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoe Schroeder dive into cutting-edge obesity treatments like GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic and Mounjaro) and their role alongside bariatric surgery and nutrition. This episode delivers insights into new research, nutrition strategies, and the future of affordable Semaglutide production.GLP-1 Medications vs. Bariatric Surgery: A Data-Driven ComparisonA recent study presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery examined 40,000 participants' weight loss outcomes across three approaches: lifestyle changes, GLP-1 medications, and bariatric surgery.Lifestyle changes led to 7% weight loss but most of the weight returned within four years.GLP-1 medications like Wegovy achieved 15-22% weight loss, though over 50% was regained upon stopping treatment.Bariatric surgery offered the most durable results, with gastric bypass patients maintaining 25% total weight loss after 10 years.Dr. Weiner emphasized that combining these tools often yields the best results, rather than choosing one in isolation. “When used strategically, they complement each other to lower your metabolic setpoint effectively,” he explained.Addition vs. Restriction: A New Approach to DietingMost diets focus on restriction, which fails over time. Instead, Zoe advocates for an addition mindset, emphasizing nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.“When you focus on what you can add rather than what you must cut out, it naturally crowds out less healthy choices and fosters a sustainable, positive mindset,” she explained.Semaglutide's Global Impact and the Rise of GenericsDr. Weiner highlighted a groundbreaking development in the global production of Semaglutide. Due to a favorable ruling in India, generic versions could be available by 2026, potentially lowering costs significantly.“This could be a game-changer for millions who currently can't access Semaglutide,” Dr. Weiner noted, though challenges like cold-chain transport and international legality remain.Nutrition Strategies for GLP-1 SuccessFor those using GLP-1 medications, Zoe shares essential dietary tips to optimize results and minimize side effects:Prioritize vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and legumes.Avoid greasy and processed foods that can worsen nausea or digestive issues.“This unprocessed, nutrient-dense diet mirrors the advice we give post-bariatric surgery patients,” Dr. Weiner added.Key Takeaways1. GLP-1 Medications: Transformative but most effective when paired with proper nutrition and, in some cases, surgery.2. Restriction Diets Are Outdated: Adopt an addition mindset to foster long-term, sustainable success.3. Bariatric Surgery's Durability: Surgery offers unmatched long-term weight loss results, especially when integrated with other tools.4. Affordable Semaglutide Is Coming: Generic production in India could reshape global access by 2026.Final ThoughtsEpisode 58 reveals the synergistic power of combining GLP-1 medications, bariatric surgery, and the right nutrition strategies. If you're ready to take control of your metabolic setpoint, this episode provides the tools and insights you need.

To manage it:Prioritize lean proteins and vegetables.Avoid large meals and overly processed foods.Practice mindful eating to control portions and prevent discomfort.Should You Avoid Drinking After Eating?A listener wondered whether post-op patients must separate eating and drinking. Dr. Weiner dispelled the myth:No Universal Rule: The stomach pouch empties quickly, and drinking doesn't affect fullness.Listen to Your Body: Some may feel bloated when drinking with meals, so adjust based on personal comfort.Pregnancy After Weight Loss SurgeryAmanda sought advice on preparing for pregnancy post-surgery. Key recommendations included:Vitamin Adjustments: Switch to prenatal vitamins to ensure proper iron and folate levels while avoiding vitamin A toxicity.Mindful Nutrition: Focus on protein-rich, well-balanced meals while avoiding excessive weight gain.Manage Risks: Pregnancy slightly increases the chance of bowel obstruction, but with a proactive care team, this can be managed effectively.Key TakeawaysThis episode provides actionable advice for navigating challenges like dumping syndrome, food noise, and post-op pregnancy:Manage food noise with balanced meals, planned indulgences, or GLP-1 medications if necessary.Gastric bypass revision surgery can resolve reflux but requires careful post-op management.Dumping syndrome is manageable with mindful dietary adjustments.Pregnancy after surgery is safe and healthier with proper preparation and care.Join the ConversationSubmit your questions for future episodes and let Dr. Weiner and Zoe guide you with science-backed strategies for success after weight loss surgery.

In Episode 55 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner explores the complex causes of obesity and shares innovative strategies for achieving lasting weight loss. Drawing from decades of experience as a bariatric surgeon and his deep understanding of physiology, Dr. Weiner delivers actionable insights into weight loss surgery, GLP-1 medications, and the power of healthy food.Understanding the Root Cause of ObesityObesity is not just about overeating or inactivity—it's deeply tied to our evolutionary biology. While our ancestors thrived with fat-storing mechanisms, modern diets rich in processed foods have disrupted this balance. These diets push our body's metabolic thermostat to a higher "setpoint," making weight loss increasingly difficult. The Metabolic Thermostat: A Key to Weight RegulationYour metabolic thermostat regulates body weight, hunger, and metabolic rate. It aims to maintain a specific "setpoint," making it hard to lose weight with calorie restriction. Efforts to lower calorie intake often backfire as the body slows its metabolism and increases food noise (cravings and hunger). Why Does the Setpoint Increase?Processed Foods: Disrupt hormonal signals and promote fat storage.Weight-Gaining Medications: Certain drugs, such as insulin and antidepressants, elevate the setpoint.Hormonal Shifts: Pregnancy, menopause, and chronic stress all contribute to weight gain.Four Proven Ways to Lower Your SetpointDr. Weiner outlines four key strategies for achieving sustainable weight loss:1. Focus on Healthy FoodAdopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and lean protein is more effective than calorie counting. These whole foods support long-term metabolic health and help reset the body's physiology.2. Build MuscleStrength training helps alter fat storage mechanisms and improves overall metabolic health. While not as powerful as other methods, maintaining muscle mass can complement other weight-loss efforts.3. Leverage GLP-1 MedicationsMedications like Wegovy and Zepbound mimic hunger-regulating hormones to reduce food noise and lower the setpoint. These drugs are highly effective when used long-term, achieving up to 25% total body weight loss in some cases.4. Weight Loss SurgeryBariatric procedures such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy lead to hormonal changes that lower the setpoint. When paired with GLP-1 medications, surgery can result in transformative weight loss of up to 50% of total body weight. The Importance of Combining TreatmentsDr. Weiner emphasizes the power of integrating healthy eating, GLP-1 medications, and weight loss surgery. This approach customizes weight-loss strategies to individual needs, enhances results, and provides durable, long-term weight control.Support and Community: Keys to SuccessDr. Weiner highlights the value of support networks and peer-led groups. These resources, paired with professional nutritional guidance, help patients stay motivated and achieve their weight loss goals.Takeaways: Obesity is a complex condition that requires a multifaceted treatment plan. Combining weight loss surgery, GLP-1 medications, and healthy food provides the best path to success. For more resources, visit Pound of Cure Weight Loss to join support groups and access expert insights.
In Episode 54 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoë Schroeder sit down with Dr. Ethan Larson, a plastic surgeon specializing in lipedema care. Together, they delve into the complexities of lipedema, available treatment options, and the transformative role of plastic surgery for lipedema. What is Lipedema?Dr. Larson explains that lipedema is a chronic condition that primarily affects women. It manifests as an abnormal accumulation of fat in the legs, arms, and sometimes the abdomen, often triggered by hormonal shifts like puberty or menopause. Unlike normal fat, lipedema fat does not respond to diet or exercise, leaving patients frustrated.Key Facts About Lipedema:Resistant to metabolic breakdown.Often accompanied by pain and swelling. Can coexist with obesity, which is treatable.Lipedema Treatment OptionsWhile diet and exercise support overall health, they do little to address lipedema fat. Dr. Larson highlights lymphatic-sparing liposuction as the most effective treatment, designed to:Remove abnormal fat while preserving the lymphatic system.Improve functionality and reduce pain.Enhance cosmetic appearance as a secondary benefit. The Role of Plastic Surgery for LipedemaPlastic surgery for lipedema is more than cosmetic; it's a functional solution that addresses discomfort and mobility challenges. Dr. Larson answers common questions about the procedure:Does the fat return? Not in treated areas, but untreated regions may develop new fat pads. How much fat can be removed? Up to 8–10 liters per session, depending on individual needs. What about risks? Safety measures ensure optimal outcomes while minimizing complications.Comprehensive Lipedema CareEffective lipedema treatment often requires a multidisciplinary approach:Dietary Adjustments: Anti-inflammatory diets can help manage secondary symptoms.Surgical Interventions: Lymphatic-sparing liposuction is the cornerstone of treatment.Patient Advocacy: Self-education and persistence are key to navigating insurance challenges.Addressing Barriers in Lipedema TreatmentDr. Larson discusses systemic challenges, including:Limited awareness among healthcare providers.Lack of insurance coverage due to insufficient diagnostic and procedural codes.High out-of-pocket costs, with surgeries starting at $12,000 per session. He stresses the importance of awareness and advocacy to improve access to care. When to Consider Plastic Surgery for LipedemaDr. Larson advises patients to stabilize their weight for at least three months before surgery. For those using GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro, he recommends completing weight loss before planning surgery to ensure long-term success.Lipedema Support and ResourcesOrganizations like the Lipedema Foundation are vital for raising awareness and advocating for systemic change. Dr. Larson encourages patients to utilize resources like Lipedema.org to connect with knowledgeable specialists and support networks.Final Advice for Lipedema PatientsDr. Larson's key recommendations:1. Get Diagnosed: Work with a specialist to confirm your condition.2. Set Priorities: Identify treatment goals to guide your care plan.3. Plan Ahead: Ensure long-term weight stability and realistic expectations.Connect with the ExpertsVisit www.larsonplasticsurgery.com or www.poundofcureweightloss.com to learn more
In Episode 53 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Weiner and Zoe dive into meaningful topics, from celebrating non-scale victories to understanding the limits of BMI and exposing the troubling influence of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) on healthcare costs. This engaging episode not only informs listeners about these issues but also empowers them to advocate for a better, patient-centered healthcare system.Celebrating Non-Scale Victories on Your Weight Loss JourneyWeight loss is about more than numbers on the scale, and non-scale victories (NSVs) are a powerful reminder of the progress often missed. Dr. Weiner and Zoe discuss these achievements, which include everything from improvements in flexibility to walking up stairs without fatigue. Zoe suggests keeping a running list of NSVs to stay motivated, especially during weight loss stalls. This practice can give you a balanced perspective on success, showing that even small victories matter. Tracking NSVs is a great way to remember that you're moving forward, even when the scale doesn't reflect it.The Limits of BMI as a Health MeasureThe Body Mass Index (BMI) has been widely used to assess health, but it's far from perfect. Dr. Weiner and Zoe critique the BMI's shortcomings, explaining how this 200-year-old formula, which simply compares weight to height, fails to account for muscle mass, body composition, and other essential factors. Dr. Weiner points out that BMI often mislabels individuals, especially those with high muscle mass, as “overweight.” They discuss alternatives, like the Body Roundness Index (BRI), that consider waist and hip measurements, offering a more nuanced health picture. Dr. Weiner underscores the importance of moving beyond BMI and adopting more accurate, holistic measures.Pharmacy Benefit Managers: Putting Profits Over PatientsIn their discussion on pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), Dr. Weiner and Zoe reveal how these intermediaries have shifted from helping lower drug prices to prioritizing profits. PBMs now control nearly 80% of pharmacy claims, often inflating prices to serve their bottom line. For example, PBMs have been known to hike up the cost of drugs like Zytiga from a wholesale price of $229 to as high as $6,000, placing a heavy burden on patients and taxpayers. Dr. Weiner argues that PBMs' monopolistic practices highlight the urgent need for more transparency and regulation in healthcare. By better understanding the role PBMs play, patients can advocate for policies to lower drug costs and improve access to care. How to Advocate for a Patient-Centered Healthcare SystemIn the final segment, Dr. Weiner and Zoe encourage listeners to take an active role in changing healthcare. They urge you to research healthcare legislation, support representatives pushing for lower drug prices, and vote for candidates focused on putting patients over profits. Advocacy, they emphasize, is essential for reforming healthcare to make it more accessible and affordable for everyone.Episode TakeawaysThis episode tackles the critical issues of weight loss success, BMI's limitations, and the role of PBMs, leaving listeners with actionable steps to navigate the healthcare system and celebrate their own achievements. Episode 53 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast is a must-listen for those interested in health reform, practical weight loss advice, and a more compassionate approach to healthcare.
In Episode 52 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, we delve into Vanessa Ruiz's (@myvanety) personal and transformative journey with sleeve gastrectomy, her experiences with body dysmorphia, and her decision to include compounded semaglutide in her weight management plan. Her story provides insight into the challenges many face with obesity treatment and the importance of the “Choose Your Hard” mindset.Vanessa's Journey to Sleeve GastrectomyVanessa grew up struggling with weight, influenced by family dynamics and cultural pressures around food. In her 20s, life changes, depression, and a PCOS diagnosis caused further weight gain, prompting her to pursue a sleeve gastrectomy in Mexico. Despite undergoing the surgery during the pandemic and navigating limited post-op care, she took her recovery into her own hands by researching and preparing herself, leading to successful early results. The Role of Compounded Semaglutide in Long-Term SuccessThree years post-op, Vanessa began to experience weight regain—a common hurdle for many sleeve gastrectomy patients. Compounded semaglutide, a variation of GLP-1 medication, became essential in helping her control food noise and support her appetite regulation, enhancing the long-term success of her sleeve gastrectomy. This medication, while not a replacement for lifestyle changes, provided Vanessa with the support to maintain her achievements, highlighting its importance in post-surgical weight management.Navigating Body Dysmorphia After Weight LossA surprising challenge for Vanessa was body dysmorphia, a disconnect between her physical transformation and her self-perception. Despite her progress, Vanessa struggled to see herself as others did, facing persistent negative perceptions about her appearance. Therapy and mindfulness practices proved valuable in helping her manage these emotional hurdles, emphasizing the importance of psychological preparation for those undergoing significant weight loss.Advice from Vanessa: “Choose Your Hard”Vanessa's motto, “Choose Your Hard,” speaks to the importance of making difficult but rewarding choices. She shares how the challenges of surgery, weight regain, and mental health management all contribute to a healthier life—a difficult but preferable alternative to the hardships of obesity. Her message encourages listeners to face the tough journey with resilience, as the outcome is worth the struggle.Building Community and SupportVanessa's story also highlights the critical role of community support. By connecting with others facing similar experiences, she found encouragement to push through both the successes and setbacks. Final Thoughts: Empowering Yourself for Sustainable HealthVanessa's journey offers a realistic look at the emotional and physical dedication needed to achieve weight loss success after a sleeve gastrectomy. For those managing body dysmorphia, considering GLP-1 medications like compounded semaglutide, or simply seeking encouragement, her story is a testament to the power of determination and the strength that comes from “Choosing Your Hard.”
In Episode 51 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner and dietitian Zoe Schroeder tackle listener questions on NAION vision, mocktail ideas, limited weight loss after a sleeve gastrectomy, and managing the “murky middle” phase after surgery. Here's a quick recap of the insightful advice and tips offered in this Q&A episode.Understanding NAION Vision Risks with GLP-1 MedicationsThe episode kicks off with a question about the connection between GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic and Wegovy) and NAION vision, a rare eye condition that can cause sudden vision loss. Dr. Weiner explains that NAION is often linked to low blood pressure, a risk that can increase with weight loss. He advises patients on GLP-1 medications to monitor for symptoms like dizziness upon standing, as these may indicate hypotension and increased NAION risk. Adjusting blood pressure medications may be necessary as weight drops.Key Takeaway: If you're taking GLP-1 medications and blood pressure medicine, monitor your blood pressure closely. Weight loss may require medication adjustments to lower the risk of hypotension and NAION.Mocktails: A Fun, Alcohol-Free Way to Celebrate After SurgeryThe next question dives into mocktails, a perfect option for those who want to celebrate without alcohol after gastric bypass surgery. Zoe shares ideas for tasty, sugar-free mocktails, like mixing sparkling water with hibiscus tea and adding frozen watermelon cubes for flavor. She also encourages listeners to use fancy glasses and creative garnishes to make the drink feel special.Mocktail Idea: Hibiscus tea with sparkling water and frozen watermelon cubes makes a refreshing, celebratory drink that's low in sugar and calories.Key Takeaway: Mocktails can help you enjoy social occasions without alcohol. Use sugar-free ingredients and fun presentation to keep them bariatric-friendly and festive.Limited Weight Loss After A Sleeve GastrectomyA listener who had a sleeve gastrectomy but lost less weight than expected wonders why their experience differs from others. Dr. Weiner explains that weight loss results vary widely, with some patients experiencing more dramatic changes than others. He emphasizes the importance of combining surgery with lifestyle changes and, if necessary, GLP-1 medications to amplify weight loss.Key Takeaway: Every weight loss journey is unique, and surgery alone may not guarantee specific results. Combining surgery with lifestyle changes and, if needed, GLP-1 medications can enhance weight loss success.Navigating the Murky Middle Phase of Weight Loss After SurgeryThe episode concludes with advice on navigating the “murky middle” phase around six months after surgery. This stage involves adjusting to a slower weight loss rate and a returning appetite. Zoe suggests shifting from a protein-focused diet to one rich in vegetables, fruits, and nutrient-dense foods to avoid the “portion control trap,” where patients eat small portions of high-calorie foods, risking long-term regain.Key Takeaway: Use the murky middle to build healthy habits with nutrient-dense foods, setting up a foundation for sustainable weight loss and maintenance. Conclusion: Small Changes for Long-Term SuccessIn Episode 51, Dr. Weiner and Zoe underscore that bariatric surgery and GLP-1 medications are tools, not quick fixes. By making mindful adjustments and focusing on healthy eating, patients can set themselves up for long-term success.
This episode of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast follows Denise's inspiring journey through bariatric surgery, bodybuilding, and discovering the transformative power of muscle and strength. Joined by Dr. Weiner and Zoe, Denise shares how she's redefined her goals and found lasting wellness, showing that post-surgery life is about much more than just weight loss—it's about building resilience and confidence.A Fresh Start with Bariatric SurgeryDenise's journey began in 2018, six years ago, when she moved to North Carolina and sought bariatric surgery to improve her health. She invested time in therapy beforehand to address anxiety and its impact on her relationship with food, which helped her approach surgery with full commitment. Within a year, she lost 110 pounds and transformed her mindset about food and body image.Shifting Focus: From Weight Loss to Building Muscle and StrengthAs Denise reached her lowest weight, she realized her new goal was not just to stay lean but to build a strong, muscular physique that reflected her resilience. She shifted from focusing on the scale to prioritizing muscle growth, redefining her goals based on body composition and the satisfaction of seeing her body change. By accepting a slight increase on the scale as a sign of muscle gain, Denise embraced her evolving body and set the foundation for a balanced, sustainable fitness journey.Creating a Consistent Bodybuilding Routine for SuccessSupported by her husband, a personal trainer, Denise started with three full-body workouts per week and a daily walking goal of 10,000 steps. This gradual start allowed her to build confidence, focusing on proper form and avoiding injury. As she progressed, Denise increased her workout frequency and noticed significant changes in her muscle tone and strength, finding new motivation as her goals evolved.Nutrition for Muscle and Strength After Bariatric SurgeryAchieving muscle and strength after bariatric surgery required a new approach to nutrition. Denise learned to incorporate carbs strategically, pairing them with protein and healthy fats to fuel her workouts. Tracking her food intake helped her develop a balanced relationship with food and allowed her to fuel her body for optimal strength gains.Long-Term Goals: Muscle and Strength for Healthy AgingNow nearly 50, Denise continues to set and achieve fitness goals with the long-term view of staying healthy as she ages. She trains four days a week, with muscle-building as her strategy for healthy aging. Dr. Weiner calls muscle “the fountain of youth,” noting how Denise's commitment to strength training will help her maintain her health and vitality for years to come.Denise's journey is a powerful reminder that bariatric surgery can be a gateway to lasting health and strength. Her experience shows that muscle-building and mindfulness can help post-surgery patients thrive, offering them a foundation for confidence, resilience, and a strong future.
In Episode 49 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Weiner and Zoe examine the steep costs of obesity medications like Wegovy, the influence of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), and the role of big pharmaceutical companies in shaping healthcare. Highlighting recent Senate hearings led by Bernie Sanders with Novo Nordisk's CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, this episode sheds light on how the current system prioritizes profit, often at the expense of patients' access to care.Wegovy Cost: Breaking Down High Prices in the U.S.Wegovy, a GLP-1 medication, costs around $1,349 per month in the U.S., while in other countries like the U.K., prices are as low as $92. Dr. Weiner explains that this discrepancy illustrates a broken healthcare model, where the U.S. market fuels corporate profit but leaves millions unable to afford essential treatments. With 72% of Novo Nordisk's revenue coming from U.S. sales, the company's pricing strategy relies on American consumers, who are left paying significantly more for the same medications.Big Pharma's Influence on Policy and ProfitsThis episode delves into Big Pharma's control over drug pricing, particularly the stark contrast between their research and development costs and their profits. For example, while Novo Nordisk spent $21 billion on R&D, they spent twice as much—$44 billion—on stock buybacks and dividends. Dr. Weiner highlights how political influence plays a crucial role, with both major parties receiving substantial donations from pharmaceutical companies, leading to stalled efforts in drug price regulation and patient access.Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs): Hidden Gatekeepers Driving Up CostsPBMs, the intermediaries between insurers and pharmacies, are supposed to negotiate better prices, but Dr. Weiner and Zoe point out that they often drive costs higher through hidden fees. In many cases, PBMs have financial incentives to push higher-priced drugs, creating a “pay-to-play” system that limits patient access. For example, PBMs profit by taking a percentage of negotiated drug price savings, meaning higher drug list prices generate greater profits for them. Dr. Weiner underscores how PBMs complicate and inflate pricing, making it even harder for patients to get GLP-1 medications through insurance.Do We Need Health Insurance Companies and PBMs?Dr. Weiner questions the necessity of insurance companies and PBMs in the healthcare system, arguing that they don't provide direct patient care yet extract billions from the system. He suggests that healthcare can function without these financial middlemen, allowing for a more transparent, patient-centered system where costs are lower and patients have better access to needed treatments. The Morality of Obesity Treatment CostsThe episode closes with Dr. Weiner and Zoe discussing the stigma surrounding obesity and the moral implications of restricting access to life-changing medications like Wegovy. They emphasize that obesity is a complex, chronic disease requiring comprehensive treatment, not simply a “lifestyle” issue. Dr. Weiner advocates for recognizing obesity treatment as essential, which could lead to a shift in how these medications are accessed and covered.Final TakeawaysWhile the healthcare landscape remains challenging, Dr. Weiner believes patient advocacy, legislative changes, and innovation can improve access to these life-saving treatments. This episode offers insights into navigating the current system while emphasizing the need for systemic change to prioritize patient health over profits.
In Episode 48 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoe Schroeder explore the future of compounded GLP-1 medications, the dangers of the health halo effect, and debunk common diet myths that often lead to confusion for those trying to lose weight.Compounded GLP-1 Medications: A Controversial Solution on the Brink of ExtinctionDr. Weiner and Zoe kick off the discussion by addressing the fate of compounded GLP-1 medications. Medications like Zepbound and Wegovy, FDA-approved for obesity, have faced shortages, leading to the rise of compounded alternatives. These non-FDA-regulated versions, sourced from China and mixed in US compounding pharmacies, have been a lifeline for patients who can't access the brand-name medications. However, Dr. Weiner highlights that these compounded versions may soon become unavailable due to regulatory changes. Compounded GLP-1 medications can only be produced during shortages of the original drugs and with supply stabilizing, their production may soon be banned. Patients currently relying on compounded alternatives will need to explore other options, such as the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Platinum Program.Diet Myths: Dispelling Common MisconceptionsDr. Weiner and Zoe also tackle pervasive diet myths, particularly the belief that weight loss is simply a matter of calorie counting. This outdated “calories in, calories out” philosophy ignores the body's hormonal responses to food. They explain that hormones like GLP-1, ghrelin and leptin play crucial roles in regulating hunger and metabolism, which is why focusing purely on calorie restriction often leads to failure.Another myth they address is the idea that fat is the enemy. While processed and animal fats should be avoided, healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and seeds are vital for long-term weight management. Additionally, Zoe clarifies that not all carbs are bad — distinguishing between refined carbs and whole-food sources like vegetables and legumes is key for sustained energy and weight loss. The Health Halo Effect: How Marketing Tricks ConsumersThe health halo effect is another topic of discussion, focusing on how food marketing can deceive consumers into making poor health choices. Labels such as “organic,” “vegan,” “low-carb” or “gluten-free” often create the illusion of health, even when the products are filled with sugar or unhealthy ingredients.Dr. Weiner and Zoe stress the importance of avoiding these traps by focusing on real, unprocessed foods like vegetables, lean proteins, fruits, nuts, beans and seeds. This approach helps ensure that you're making choices that genuinely support your health and weight loss efforts, rather than falling for misleading marketing.ConclusionIn this episode, Dr. Weiner and Zoe offer valuable insights into the future of compounded GLP-1 medications, clarify persistent diet myths, and explain how the health halo effect misleads consumers. As the regulatory landscape changes and food marketing continues to evolve, staying informed and focusing on a balanced, whole-food diet is crucial to achieving long-term success in your weight loss journey.
In Episode 47 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoe Schroeder, RD dive into weight loss topics like compounded GLP-1 medications, ultra-processed foods and their link to heart disease, and processed meat alternatives. Ultra-processed Foods: Are Some Worse Than Others?A recent study published in The Lancet found that ultra-processed foods make up a shocking 73% of the U.S. food supply, with significant consequences for heart health.Dr. Weiner and Zoe discuss how this study highlighted an 11% increased risk of heart disease for those who consumed the most ultra-processed foods. The study particularly focused on the worst offenders: processed meats and sugar-sweetened beverages. These foods were shown to have the strongest links to heart disease. One fascinating finding from the study is that not all ultra-processed foods have the same impact. When processed meats and sugary drinks are removed from the equation, the difference in heart disease risk between people who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods and those who don't becomes much smaller. This reinforces the idea that not all ultra-processed foods are equal when it comes to heart disease risk. Avoiding processed meats and sugary drinks can significantly lower your risk, while focusing on healthier food choices can improve your long-term health. Nutrition and Heart Health: How to Eat SmarterWhen it comes to improving heart health, Dr. Weiner and Zoe offer practical advice on what foods to choose instead of processed meats. Zoe emphasizes the importance of focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, such as:Fruits and vegetables: These are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help support heart health.Lean animal proteins: Opt for fish, chicken, and lean cuts of red meat as alternatives to fatty cuts of red meat and processed meats. These options provide high-quality protein without the unhealthy fats found in processed meats.Nuts and seeds: Rich in healthy fats, fiber, and protein, these are great plant-based alternatives to meat.Legumes: Beans, lentils, and chickpeas are nutrient-dense and provide a satisfying source of protein and fiber. The key is to focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods rather than simply trying to restrict calories or follow fad diets. The Pound of Cure philosophy encourages a shift in mindset toward eating for nutrition and long-term health and weight loss rather than fast weight loss which will, ultimately, come back.Zoe also mentions the importance of minimizing food noise—the constant mental distraction and cravings for unhealthy foods—by incorporating satisfying, high-quality meals into your daily routine. By making smarter food choices, you can naturally reduce your cravings for processed foods and improve both your heart health and overall well-being.Replacing processed meats with nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and legumes is a smart strategy for improving heart health and managing weight. The Role of GLP-1 Medications in Weight LossThe episode concludes with an in-depth discussion on the role of GLP-1 medications in weight loss, particularly focusing on the recent shortages and their implications. These medications, like Wegovy and Zepbound, have been highly sought after due to their ability to lower the body's set point. However, earlier shortages led many patients to seek compounded versions of these drugs.Dr. Weiner explains that compounded GLP-1 medications are custom-made by compounding pharmacies, which mix the active ingredients (Semaglutide or Tirzepatide) with saline, B12 or other additives. Release the GLP-1 VialsThe shortage of GLP-1 medications, like Wegovy and Zepbound, was primarily caused by the manufacturing of inj
In this episode of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast, Dr. Weiner and Zoe explore the key strategies and medical options available for weight loss, focusing on GLP-1 medications, a comparison between gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, and effective obesity treatment plans. This episode provides valuable insights for individuals exploring weight loss surgery, those using GLP-1 medications, and anyone interested in long-term, sustainable weight management.GLP-1 Medications and Their Role in Obesity TreatmentThe episode starts with an in-depth discussion about GLP-1 medications, such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide). Dr. Weiner explains that these medications represent a significant development in the medical treatment of obesity. GLP-1 medications work by modifying hormonal pathways that regulate hunger, fullness, and metabolism, thereby influencing the body's internal set point for weight. Rather than simply curbing appetite, these medications help adjust how the body manages energy and fat storage, making weight loss more achievable and sustainable over time.Dr. Weiner emphasizes that while GLP-1 medications can be highly effective, they are most beneficial when combined with a structured nutrition program and, when appropriate, surgical intervention. He notes that addressing obesity often requires a multi-faceted approach that goes beyond medication alone. Zoe adds that integrating these medications into a comprehensive weight management strategy that includes lifestyle changes is key for long-term success.Gastric Bypass vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy: What's the Difference? One of the central discussions of this episode is the comparison between Gastric Bypass vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy. Dr. Weiner explains the key differences, benefits, and considerations for each procedure, helping listeners understand which option might be best suited for their specific situation.Gastric Bypass: This procedure involves rerouting the digestive system, creating a small stomach pouch that is connected directly to the small intestine. Dr. Weiner explains that gastric bypass tends to result in greater weight loss and has a strong track record for addressing severe GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). For patients who experience significant acid reflux, gastric bypass is often the preferred option since it bypasses the portion of the stomach that makes digestive enzymes.Sleeve Gastrectomy: Also known as VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy), this surgery removes a large portion of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-like structure. Dr. Weiner notes that while the procedure is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time, it may not be ideal for patients with pre-existing acid reflux. Studies show that up to 5-10% of patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy can experience worsening GERD symptoms, which may necessitate a revision to gastric bypass.Dr. Weiner explains that the choice between these procedures often depends on factors such as the patient's starting BMI, the presence of GERD, and individual health goals. He encourages patients to work closely with their surgical team to determine which option is most effective for their needs. Additionally, online tools and assessments provided by the practice can help patients explore which procedure might suit them best based on their health history and weight loss goals.A Comprehensive Approach to Obesity Treatment: Combining Surgery, Medication, and NutritionDr. Weiner emphasizes that obesity treatment is most effective when it includes a combination of surgical, medical, and nutritional strategies. For many patients, integrating GLP-1 medications with bariatric surgery can amplify weight loss results, as these interventions work synergistically rather than in isolation. Both approaches target hormonal pathways that influence hunger and fullness, creating a more comprehensive shi
In this episode of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, we sit down with BethAnn, whose journey through bariatric surgery has completely transformed her life. From struggling with weight her entire life, trying countless diets, and facing health challenges, to finally achieving long-term success after surgery, BethAnn's story is one of determination, resilience, and self-care.BethAnn didn't just stop at weight loss—she took additional steps to feel comfortable in her new body, including skin removal surgery. She also navigated the self-pay bariatric surgery route, making informed decisions to get the best results for her personal situation.Let's dive into her incredible journey and learn how bariatric surgery can change not just your body, but your entire outlook on life. Whether you're exploring bariatric surgery for yourself, curious about skin removal after weight loss, or considering self-pay options, BethAnn's story is packed with insights that may guide you on your own path.Bariatric Surgery Success Story: BethAnn's Lifelong Weight StrugglesBethAnn's story is one that many can relate to. She had been battling her weight since childhood, trying everything from Richard Simmons' Deal-a-Meal to more extreme options like OptiFast, a liquid-only diet. While she did experience short-term weight loss success with these diets—losing as much as 150 pounds—BethAnn found herself regaining the weight over and over.By the time she reached her late 40s, BethAnn had resigned herself to living with the constant weight struggle. After undergoing a hysterectomy, she noticed her weight began to redistribute to her midsection, leading to additional health concerns like high blood pressure and rising cholesterol. She knew she needed a long-term solution."I'd done this seven times—lost the weight, gained it back," BethAnn explains. "The real battle for me was not losing the weight, but keeping it off."That's when she began to seriously consider bariatric surgery. Initially, like many, she hesitated, thinking of it as "cheating" or "taking the easy way out." But as she reframed the narrative, it became clear that bariatric surgery was a tool that could give her a second chance at a healthier life. After researching extensively and watching Dr. Weiner's video series, BethAnn decided to move forward with a gastric bypass procedure. This decision would turn out to be the start of her success story.Choosing Gastric Bypass Over VSGBethAnn's success with bariatric surgery didn't happen overnight, and her choice to go with gastric bypass rather than VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy) was strategic. For her, avoiding weight regain was the ultimate goal. She was determined to pick the surgery that gave her the best long-term chance of success, and after careful research, she saw that gastric bypass offered better outcomes for maintaining weight loss over the years."I was less concerned about losing the weight and more focused on keeping it off," she says. "I knew that gastric bypass had better stats when it came to avoiding weight regain, and I'd been through enough yo-yo dieting to know that was my biggest challenge."At the time of her surgery, BethAnn weighed just under 200 pounds—making her a lower BMI patient for bariatric surgery. Still, her choice of gastric bypass was a decision based on her history of weight regain, not just her starting weight.Skin Removal After Weight Loss: A Necessary Next StepAfter her weight stabilized at around 115-120 pounds, BethAnn faced another challenge that many post-op patients encounter: loose skin. This is a common side effect of significant weight loss, especially after bariatric surgery. Skin doesn't always “snap back” into place after the weight is gone, and for BethAnn, it was more than just a cosmetic issue."It wasn't like the loose skin was only visible at certain angles
Episode 44 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast offers a deep dive into cutting-edge treatments and strategies for long-term weight management, focusing on GLP-1 medications for weight loss, the emerging technology of duodenal mucosa ablation, and the issue of weight regain after GLP-1 treatment cessation. Hosted by Dr. Matthew Weiner, bariatric surgeon, and Zoe Schroeder, registered dietitian, this episode explores innovative methods to combat weight regain while delivering practical nutritional advice for sustained success. The episode begins with a light conversation about nutrition, as Zoe highlights how bananas are often unfairly demonized. Dr. Weiner suggests a simple hydration solution—water and a banana—as a healthier alternative to processed electrolyte supplements, setting the tone for the podcast's emphasis on whole, unprocessed foods.Weight Regain After GLP-1 MedicationsThe focus then shifts to the weight regain after GLP-1 medications—a challenge faced by many patients after discontinuing these treatments. Dr. Weiner introduces Revita, a new device that uses duodenal mucosa ablation to help maintain weight loss following the cessation of GLP-1 drugs. Revita recently received FDA breakthrough device designation for its ability to treat patients who experience weight regain after stopping GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Dr. Weiner discusses how this endoscopic device works by ablating (burning) the mucosa in the duodenum, a section of the small intestine, potentially mimicking the effects of gastric bypass surgery. This approach aims to create a bypass-like effect without traditional surgery, helping to address the critical issue of weight regain after GLP-1 medication cessation.Duodenal Mucosa Ablation - Skepticism and Safety ConcernsWhile Dr. Weiner expresses some skepticism about the theory behind the duodenal mucosa ablation, he acknowledges the potential of the Revita device, particularly given the high economic burden and ongoing shortages of GLP-1 medications for weight loss. He notes that while the data is promising, safety concerns—such as the risk of perforation and chronic inflammation—must be addressed before widespread adoption of this technology. In addition to discussing duodenal mucosa ablation and the challenges of weight regain after GLP-1, Dr. Weiner and Zoe offer practical nutritional guidance. They emphasize the importance of long-term dietary changes, including incorporating more whole foods, fruits, and vegetables, especially for patients on GLP-1 medications for weight loss or recovering from weight loss surgery. The podcast underscores that successful weight management requires sustainable habits, from meal planning to making healthier choices amidst busy schedules. As they wrap up the episode, Dr. Weiner and Zoe reflect on the future of obesity treatment, acknowledging that a combination of GLP-1 medications for weight loss, non-surgical techniques like GLP-1 medications and the duodenal mucosa ablation, and proper nutrition will continue to evolve. While these treatments are not magic solutions, they hold significant promise in tackling the persistent challenge of weight regain after GLP-1 cessation.Episode 44 provides a valuable perspective on the latest developments in weight management, particularly for those using GLP-1 medications for weight loss or considering alternatives like duodenal mucosa ablation. Dr. Weiner and Zoe's thoughtful discussion offers essential insights for patients navigating the complexities of weight loss surgery, medication, and nutritional strategies for long-term success.
In episode 43 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoe Schroeder, RD, explore key bariatric surgery weight loss factors, the best diet for weight loss, and how to manage malabsorption after bariatric surgery. The episode emphasizes that post-surgery success involves much more than effort alone.Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss FactorsDr. Weiner explains that multiple factors influence weight loss after surgery, including age, gender, and genetics. For example, younger patients lose more weight than older people do. And men, tend to lose more weight than women. Diabetes also complicates weight loss due to higher insulin levels. However, following the Metabolic Reset Diet can help reverse diabetes and promote more weight loss both before and after surgery. Factors like mobility issues and medications can also slow the process.Best Diet for Weight LossThe hosts highlight that the best diet for weight loss focuses on nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, lean proteins, and nuts. Dr. Weiner stresses that it's not about eating less but rather, eating differently. Highly processed foods pack in “bad calories” that hinder your metabolism, while whole foods support weight loss and overall health. The goal is to shift your calorie intake toward nutrient-dense foods and away from processed junk.Malabsorption After Bariatric SurgeryDr. Weiner also addresses concerns about malabsorption after bariatric surgery. Particularly after procedures like a gastric bypass, where certain nutrients like iron, calcium, and vitamin B12 may not be absorbed efficiently. Lifelong supplements and regular blood work are crucial to manage these deficiencies.Long-Term Success: More Than Just SurgeryWhile surgery can significantly lower your body's setpoint, long-term success depends on lifestyle changes. Dr. Weiner and Zoe recommend combining surgery with nutrition and movement in order to produce the best, most durable weight loss. When those aren't enough, Dr. Weiner will also combine surgery with GLP-1 medications to reduce hunger and make it easier to maintain a healthy diet. These medications lower the setpoint and help manage "food noise," but they need to be taken consistently to prevent weight regain.ConclusionIn this episode, Dr. Weiner and Zoe emphasize that bariatric surgery weight loss factors include things beyond effort, like age and the type of surgery chosen. The best diet for weight loss focuses on nutrient-dense foods, and malabsorption after bariatric surgery is manageable with proper care. On today's episode we explore one of the most important yet often overlooked aspects of bariatric surgery—the emotional journey. While many focus on the physical transformation, it's the emotional and mental changes that often determine long-term success. Bariatric surgery isn't just about losing weight; it's about reshaping your relationship with food and developing healthier ways to manage emotions. The Emotional Impact of Bariatric SurgeryWe'll start by diving into the emotional impact of bariatric surgery. Many people use food as a way to cope with stress, sadness, or boredom. But after surgery, that emotional crutch isn't available anymore. This shift can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, or even what's known as "bariatric grief." In this episode, we discuss what it's like to let go of old habits and how to find new ways to handle difficult emotions.Emotional Eating After Bariatric SurgeryOne of the biggest challenges many people face post-surgery is emotional eating. Although your stomach is smaller and physically can't handle the same amount of food, the emotional triggers that lead to overeating don't just disappear. Emotional eating can show up in new ways, like making bad food choices. We'll talk about how to spot these behaviors early and provide practical tips, such as keeping a food journal and working with a therapist, to address emotional eating head-on.Mental Health Support is CrucialIn this episode, we also cover why mental health support is so crucial after bariatric surgery. Many people go through a psychological evaluation before surgery, but the real emotional work often needs to happen afterward. We'll explore how the adjustment to a new lifestyle can bring up anxiety, fear of weight regain, or feelings of frustration, and how important it is to develop healthy coping strategies. From practicing mindfulness and talking to a therapist to joining support groups, we discuss several ways to manage emotional ups and downs.Community is KeyA key theme of today's discussion is the importance of community. Having a strong support system can make all the difference in your post-surgery journey. Whether it's friends, family, or a support group, feeling understood and supported plays a huge role in staying on track emotionally. We'll share how connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can help you feel less alone and offer practical advice on building your own support network.Emotional Ramifications of Weight RegainLastly, we'll touch on the reality of weight regain and why it's important not to view it as a failure. Weight can fluctuate, but it's part of the process. By focusing on your emotional well-being and continuing to build healthy habits, you'll be better equipped to handle any bumps in the road without turning back to old, unhealthy patterns. So, whether you're thinking about bariatric surgery, in the early stages of recovery, or years post-op, this episode offers valuable insights into managing your emotional health and navigating the mental challenges that come with such a life-changing procedure. Tune in for a conversation that will help you embrace your new, healthier life while taking care of your emotional well-being along the way!
In Episode 41 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss podcast, we explore the growing use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss, particularly focusing on compounded versions of Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. These medications, typically found in Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro, have become incredibly popular for their effectiveness in helping patients lose weight. With shortages of these factory-produced drugs, compounding pharmacies have emerged as a more accessible and affordable alternative for many. But what exactly does compounding mean, and is it safe?We break down how compounding pharmacies create custom versions of medications, often offering a lower-cost option. While the appeal is strong, compounded meds come with potential risks. Quality and dosage can vary significantly, raising concerns about safety and effectiveness. We share patient stories and real-world examples of how compounded versions can differ from the original medications in potency and results, and we explain why patients should approach compounded GLP-1 meds with caution.Beyond the legal and safety considerations, we also discuss practical tips for those taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss, such as staying hydrated. These meds not only curb hunger but also reduce the body's natural thirst response, making it easy to become dehydrated. We offer simple strategies for maintaining hydration while on these medications, which is crucial for overall health and well-being.Finally, we look ahead to the future of compounded medications. As shortages ease and patents become enforceable, compounded versions of GLP-1 drugs may become less common. We also touch on the possibility of generic versions hitting the market, making these life-changing medications more affordable and accessible. If you're considering compounded meds or just want to learn more about your options, this episode offers valuable insights into how to make the best choices for your weight loss journey.
In this episode, we cover a wide range of topics related to diabetes, weight loss, and bariatric surgery. We kick things off by talking about the underlying cause of diabetes. Most people believe that diabetes is caused by an over consumption of carbohydrates. But that's incorrect. In fact, studies show that the consumption of animal fat is what causes your insulin receptors to become less sensitive. Next, we answer the question, “How long should you be on the Metabolic Reset Diet?” It's a question we get asked daily and, as usual, the answer isn't universal. Rather, it's about determining what things you need to change in order to make the Metabolic Reset Diet work for you long-term. We offer practical advice on how to do this. Next, we tackle weight regain after bariatric surgery, especially for those who've had a sleeve gastrectomy (VSG). Almost half of patients deal with weight regain, and it's not just about eating too much or slacking on exercise. The conversation dives into why this happens, focusing on hormonal changes and the body's natural resistance to weight loss. We also talk about how combining surgery with medications like GLP-1s can help manage weight over the long term. Finally, we share some tips on how to minimize hair loss after bariatric surgery. It's a common concern for most patients. We cover practical ways to reduce hair thinning, including preventative measures like proper nutrition, key supplements, and medication to build reserves that assist in keeping as much of your hair as possible after surgery.
In this episode, Laura, a previous guest on the podcast, returns to share more about her successful peer support group for those who have undergone weight loss surgery. The conversation revolves around the value of community and how it provides a sense of connection and understanding for people on their weight loss journeys. Laura's group, lovingly nicknamed "Laura's Losers," meets regularly to offer emotional support, share personal stories, and discuss tips for staying on track.Laura emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming, living-room-style atmosphere where participants can openly discuss their struggles, especially around topics like post-op stalls and feeling isolated. She shares her own experiences, including her recent vacation where she was able to indulge mindfully while still staying true to her health goals. This helps alleviate some of the common fears that new patients have about life after surgery. The conversation touches on the emotional toll of weight loss, particularly the societal pressure and feelings of guilt that many people face. Laura, along with the hosts, stress the importance of self-compassion and avoiding the trap of perfectionism. They remind listeners that there is no "finish line" when it comes to health, and that setbacks are a normal part of the journey. The episode ends with a discussion of future plans for the group, including in-person meetups and continued support, underscoring the ongoing importance of community in long-term weight loss success.
In this discussion about bariatric meal prep and bariatric meal plans, Kristen Willard shares valuable tips for both patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and patients who are using a non-surgical approach to weight loss. The main focus is simplicity and practicality in creating meal plans. Kristen suggests starting meal prep with the meal you find most difficult, like breakfast, rather than feeling overwhelmed by prepping every meal at once. This gradual approach helps build confidence. When it comes to bariatric meal prep, Kristen advocates for a flexible, ingredient-focused method. For example, cooking chicken in a slow cooker with salsa can serve as multiple meals, like in a lettuce wrap or a salad. This ensures variety without the need for extensive prep time. Additionally, Kristen emphasizes the importance of flavor to keep meals interesting by changing spices, sauces or dressings, preventing boredom from repetitive meals. She also discusses strategies for getting kids to eat healthy. Kristen highlights the value of involving children in meal planning and meal prep, making it a family effort. By giving them choices between healthy options, kids feel more empowered and are more likely to enjoy the meals. She encourages parents to lead by example, showing that healthy eating can be enjoyable for everyone in the household. Finally, Kristen recommends useful kitchen gadgets like an Instant Pot and a vegetable chopper to save time in prepping ingredients, making the process more manageable. Kristen's philosophy is that meal prep doesn't have to be complicated; focusing on simple steps can lead to sustainable habits.
Can psychiatric medications really lead to dramatic weight gain? Does your socioeconomic status really determine if you'll end up obese? And is there anything you can do about weight loss plateaus? Join us for an eye-opening episode of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast. In today's episode, we touch on a few key topics related to weight gain and weight loss challenges. First off, we dive into the role of medications that can actually cause weight gain. Things like antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and even birth control can seriously impact your body's ability to maintain or lose weight. It's not uncommon for people to be doing everything right with their diet and exercise, but these medications still push their weight up. We also talk about frustrating weight loss plateaus. Everyone hits them at some point, and the key is not to freak out. Reverting back to only drinking protein shakes, is not going to solve the problem. Small changes—like adjusting your veggie intake or swapping out processed foods for whole foods—can make a big difference. And remember, plateaus are totally normal, so don't feel like you're failing. Finally, we touch on how socioeconomic status plays a major role in weight gain. People from lower-income backgrounds often have a harder time losing weight, partly because of limited access to healthier foods. Living in areas where fresh produce is hard to come by (hello, food deserts!) makes sticking to a healthy lifestyle that much tougher. So, it's a mix of factors outside your control like medications, hitting plateaus, and even where you live that can affect your weight loss journey.
In this episode, we unpack some fascinating insights from an NBC News article that highlights why most people stop using Wegovy after two years. Dr. Weiner shares his thoughts, explaining that a lack of access due to shortages, high costs, and insurance coverage issues are significant reasons why people discontinue these medications. The Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) who released the data might also have an agenda since they are not keen on covering expensive weight loss medications. Dr. Weiner believes that many people would continue using Wegovy if they had consistent access without these barriers. We also hear Martin's inspiring weight loss journey. Initially struggling with his weight from a young age, he tried every fad diet before opting for weight loss surgery. Martin shares his experience with the lap band surgery in 2009, which didn't work out as planned. He eventually transitioned to a gastric bypass after his wake-up call, realizing that he wanted to lead a healthier life for his family. Through a combination of gastric bypass, GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro, and the 10-to-1 protein rule, Martin achieved a significant weight loss. His story underlines the importance of finding a personal "why" and using it as motivation to make lasting lifestyle changes.Dr. Weiner discusses the heritability of weight loss response to gastric bypass surgery, emphasizing that genetic factors often play a significant role in the success of such procedures. He cites a study showing that the genetic relationship between first-degree relatives had a more substantial impact on weight loss success after surgery than merely living together. This highlights the potential genetic influence on how individuals respond to both surgery and weight loss medications. We also dive into practical advice on reaching protein goals post-surgery. For those struggling with limited food volume, we recommend strategies like fortifying meals with protein powders and choosing nutrient-dense options like Greek yogurt or smoothies to meet protein targets without consuming large quantities of food. Achieving these protein goals can help speed up weight loss and break through plateaus.Overall, this episode covers the complexities of weight loss, from understanding the barriers to medication adherence to navigating genetic influences and personalizing nutrition strategies.
In this episode, we tackle some hot topics and share inspiring stories. We start with a big piece of news: the CEO of Novo Nordisk being brought before a Senate committee. This is huge because Novo Nordisk is a major player in the GLP-1 medication world, and there's a lot of scrutiny on how these drugs are priced and covered by insurance. We also dive into the incredible story of Leslie, who needed a combination of nutrition, exercise, GLP-1 medications, and bariatric surgery to lose an astonishing 157 pounds. Her journey is a powerful reminder that weight loss isn't a one-size-fits-all solution and often requires a multifaceted approach. On a different note, we discuss some eye-opening research showing that obese people tend to earn less money than their non-obese counterparts. This wage gap is especially pronounced as education levels increase, which is both shocking and troubling. We also get into the nitty-gritty of insurance coverage for GLP-1 medications. It's frustrating to see how many barriers there are for patients trying to get these potentially life-changing drugs. We offer some tips on how to navigate these challenges and advocate for better coverage.Overall, this episode is packed with important information and real-life stories that highlight the complexities of weight loss and the broader societal issues related to obesity.
In this episode of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, we dive into the surprising mental health benefits of GLP-1 medications. We discuss recent studies that debunk the myth of increased risk of suicide and highlight the positive impact these medications have on reducing depression, curbing alcohol and binge eating disorders, and slowing the progression of Parkinson's. We dive in to the exorbitant cost of GLP-1 medications and explore potential solutions for affordability. We compare the cost of compounded medications to the FDA approved meds to see whether or not the compounded medications are actually less expensive.Another key topic covered in this episode is the importance of reframing self-talk to overcome barriers to healthy behaviors. Zoe shares strategies for shifting from justifications like "I don't have time" to a more empowering mindset, encouraging listeners to prioritize their health and wellness. Finally, we address practical concerns about fruit intake for diabetics, why GLP-1 medications are not suitable for losing the last 10 pounds unless there is a significant medical indication, and the ever-changing insurance coverage for GLP-1 medications.Tune in to learn more about the transformative potential of GLP-1 medications, practical advice on managing costs, and strategies for reframing your mindset to support your weight loss journey.
