The Nick Taylor Horror Show
THE OFFERING Director, Oliver Park on The Study of Fear [Episode 101]

The Nick Taylor Horror Show

"Fear is earned through character; you might hear someone say that you're only as scared as the characters on the screen." Welcome to the Nick Taylor Horror Show! As always, each episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show explores how today's horror filmmakers are getting their movies made while deconstructing their methods and career strategies into practical insights that you can use on your own horror filmmaking journey. This includes their creative processes, funding resources, favorite books & tools, key life lessons, and much much more. Judaic demonology has carved out its niche as a legitimate horror sub-genre with entries like 2019's The Vigil, Sam Raimi's The Possession, 2022's Lullaby, and most recently, The Offering. Set in a Brooklyn Hasidic enclave, the film draws its plot from the Jewish folktale of Abyzou, a female demon blamed for miscarriages and infant mortality. Shot on a relatively low budget, The Offering is a riveting horror drama that showcases indelible character-building, great performances, and stunning cinematography, ultimately marking an undeniably impressive debut for our guest today, Oliver Park. Oliver Park is a British horror writer and director best known for his short films Vicious and Still, which have been praised by fans and critics alike. The Offering is his first feature and is now streaming on Hulu. In this conversation, we delve into Oliver's directorial origin story, the making of The Offering, and an exploration of what it means to be a scholar of fear. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Oliver Park.   Build fear through character and story. The Offering excels at character development, with each character displaying a significant amount of depth and well-crafted backstory. This aspect contributes greatly to the film's effectiveness, as understanding the characters leads to caring for them. When you care for the characters, you empathize with their struggles, and that empathy ultimately transforms into fear for their well-being, which is ultimately what can make your movie genuinely scary.   Be flexible and foster a secure atmosphere for actors. The acting in The Offering is impressive, especially considering it's Oliver's first feature film. He emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment for actors, which primarily involves giving them the space and time they require and protecting them from on-set chaos. This is achieved by briefing the crew beforehand and closely collaborating with your AD regarding set pacing while also advocating for more time when necessary. Particularly in low-budget films, there's often pressure to move at a rapid clip, but the subtle details that can make or break a movie, such as performance nuances, require time and are ultimately worth the investment. Learn to create the space needed for actors to deliver their best work, even when working at a fast pace.   Stay closely connected with the story to make adjustments during production. Oliver mentioned that several unexpected events occurred while making The Offering, but instead of panicking, he managed to bounce back because of his deep understanding of the story. Relying too heavily on specific scenes, dialogue, or set pieces can make your movie vulnerable to collapse if things don't go as planned. To build resilience, become so intimately familiar with the story that you can quickly devise alternative solutions that still remain true to the story's core. This will give you the adaptability to turn on a dime and rewrite scenes, dialogue, etc., when things inevitably go wrong.   Scares, Story, Character; the magic short solution.  Oliver offered an extremely powerful distillation of principles for producing a powerful short; this is a nugget of pure gold. He stated that people will take you seriously if you can create fear and build great characters with a solid story underneath it all. This may sound simple, but it's very difficult and the main challenge for horror filmmakers. Watch Oliver's short Vicious as well as the short of Parker Finn and David Sandberg for examples of this.    Show Notes: Oliver's short films, Vicious and Still. MOVIE REVIEW: Aquaman was an over-the-top absurd film that dared to be stupid and it paid off. DC was hurting for something fun, and it delivered. Can Shazam! do the same? Can it be fun? Can it exceed expectations? Can it actually make more sense than Aquaman did? Spoilers, it is! Thoroughly enjoyable, incredibly goofy, filled to the brim with heart, Shazam! perhaps has a little too much fun with itself, and you know what? More power to it! If this is where DC wants to go, let's keep going! I don't ever want to see the breaks turned on for this! Shazam! is Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action, language, and suggestive material. It features Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Mark Strong. Directed by David Sandberg. Tune in Wednesday nights for new episodes of Cinematic Doctrine! In this lighthearted DCEU entry, Billy Batson is a trouble-making fourteen-year-old living in a foster home in Philadelphia, having been abandoned by a young mother he's been searching for since she left him at a crowded carnival many years prior. One day, the sleuthing prankster gets transported after an act of bravery to another realms to meet a powerful and reclusive wizard, who has been on a long-term search for someone pure of heart to pass on his magical powers to. The wizard bestows upon Billy the power to turn into an muscle-bound, adult-bodied, costumed superhero by using his name of "Shazam!" Along with his superhero-loving best friend in the foster home, Freddy, the still adolescent-minded Billy has plenty of fun in discovering his new powers and all of the things he can do with them, from buying beer to giving the school bullies some comeuppance. However, things get serious with the emergence of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, once past over as unworthy by the wizard and seeking to usurp them from Billy, along with the cabal of demon-like possessors within him, representing the Seven Deadly Sins who plan to come to power with Sivana as their vessel to the outside world.

Why So Serious Pop Culture and Movie Review Podcast

Brandon, Mike and Devin are here to review the DCEU's best film ShaZam. This film is not just good for a WB/DC film, its a really really good film. ShaZam is a character that not a lot of people know and DC let David Sandberg tell his story and he tells a fun, entertaining, action packed story. We get angry at points in this review because DC should have been operating on this level for 8 years now and it is a shame that ShaZam is the property that they finally get right. All in all everyone should go see this film. A fun show as always, Please be sure to subscribe to our show on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Also leave us a five star review.. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The Conjuring and what has turned into a franchise has been quite successful. With its throwback supernatural horror scares seen in such films as The Changeling and The Entity, younger horror fans are able to see frightening movies that have the feel of these “forgotten classics.” The latest film of the franchise is Annabelle: Creation, the prequel to the highly successful but mixed reviewed Annabelle. A doll maker and his wife lose their young daughter, Annabelle, in a tragic car accident. Many years later they invite a nun and the orphans under her care to live with them after the orphanage was closed. As all adjust to their new surroundings, various odd things happen. Is the house haunted? Directed by Dave Sandberg, the Swedish director who helmed the highly successful Light’s Out, this prequel to Annabelle has received critical acclaim. With a cast of young actresses between 10 and 21 years old, high praise of the acting has been widespread. The budget was fairly tiny at about $15M USD, yet the movie has gone on to make almost $300M USD world wide. A huge success, your co-hosts take a look at the film while all together in person in the town of Lisbon, Connecticut. Sverige!

We talk with Lawrence Grey, producer of Lights Out, an indie horror thriller from first-time feature film director David Sandberg. Lights Out began as an independent short film, created by Sandberg in his native Sweden. The super creepy 3-minute horror short caught fire online. Lawrence discovered it, decided to collaborate with Sandberg to bring it to the big screen, and enlisted help from James Wan, the director of horror mega-hits Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring films, as well as international blockbuster Furious 7. They also assembled a talented cast, including Teresa Palmer, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello. Lights Out was produced for just $5 million dollars, but last weekend it opened with a stellar $21.6 million at the box office. With great reviews and word of mouth, it’s estimated for a $50 million domestic run, which is huge business for a little horror film. We talk about this remarkable Hollywood story, from YouTube short by an unknown director, to a silver screen success. And we discuss putting together a dream-team of professionals from big budget blockbusters who saw something special in this unique premise. Lights Out is in theaters and thrilling audiences now.

Deras budgetskräckis "Lights Out" blev viral över en natt. Ah, y no olvidéis suscribiros y recomendarnos a vuestros familiares y hamijos.

The guys have been inspired by the amazing release of Kung Fury and discuss how fondness for the 80s is so prevalent in today's modern culture.  Stanton is so moved by the project that he convinced Davis to provide running commentary for the film.Somehow, every aspect of 80s action iconography is successfully portrayed in a comedic, over-the-top masterpiece by David Sandberg.
