As a member of the Newark, New Jersey group Artifacts alongside Tame One and DJ Kaos, El Da Sensei is responsible for some bona fide 90s hip hop classics, including "C'mon with the Git Down” and "Wrong Side of da Tracks," the group's homage to the art of graffiti. After Artifacts split up following their second album 'That's Them' in 1997, El went on to have a prolific solo career, releasing nearly a dozen projects and consistently touring the globe on his own as well as with Polish hip hop duo The Returners. El's a true working class emcee, and his dedication to his craft as a writer and as an independent artist has granted him a pretty unique experience that we uncover throughout this conversation. We also talk a little bit about the impromptu Artifacts reunion in 2009 that brought El and Tame together and set the stage for their upcoming third Artifacts album, produced entirely by Buckwild and carrying the torch for DJ Kaos, who unfortunately passed away in 2019 ; the album is scheduled to be released later this year. In this episode, we discuss: "Speakin'" ('Relax, Relate, Release', 2003) "Live Noise" feat. Akrobatik (w/ The Returners, 'GT2: Nu World', 2010) "Wrong Side of Da Tracks" (Artifacts, 'Between a Rock and a Hard Place', 1994) "It Takes Two" (w/ Sadat X, 'XL,' 2018) "Money" feat Roc Marciano and Reef the Lost Cause ('The Money EP', 2009) "Got Fire" (w/ The Returners, 'Global Takeover', 2008) "31 Bumrush" (Artifacts, 'That's Them,' 1997) El Da Sensei: instagram.com/senseifromnj cantknocktheshuffle.com questionshiphop.com instagram.com/seandammit  twitter.com/seandammit  Email: cantknocktheshuffle@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Angry bulls, furious penguins, enraged seals! In the shadow of the volcano 'Between the Ears' gets a microphone close up to enjoy the action, as veterinarian Jonathan Hollins, gives us a taste of life with the remote animals and sea life of Tristan Da Cunha. On an island of a population of around 250 people, a thousand sheep and many more penguins, Joe also gets a flavour of what happened to the islanders when the volcano last erupted and they were forced to leave their homes, sixty years ago. Cracks in the ground were opening and closing - one sheep fell in! Boats took them to a nearby penguin colony where they sheltered until rescued. Sent to live in the UK , all chose to return to Tristan as soon as it was declared safe by an expeditionary force sent out by The Royal Society. The island was just as they had left it, the settlement miraculously spared, though all the sheep mysteriously disappeared... there are theories as to why! Memories of the volcano are mixed with Joe's daily life - the domestic close up sounds of cows birthing, bulls hoisted onto land from bucking fishing vessels and gong clanging to bring the islanders together. The atmosphere is punctuated by updated versions of traditional sea shanties - performed by the likes of Lou Reed, Anthony, Beth Orton, Rufus Wainwright, Richard Thomson and Tim Robbins. This rocky outcrop was claimed by the Dutch, the British, the Portuguese, and even an American Privateer, geographically useful to all in its splendid isolation, (even in the 20th century the islanders only heard about the ‘result’ of the First World War a year after it finished). Today, we might envy their close community and isolation in a world endangered by today’s globalisation. Joe was lucky to get permission to record during his time there, by the island council, scarred by their previous experiences with the ‘press’, most particularly during that 18 months living as refugees in the UK. From the most remote community in the world – Tristan Da Cunha - the sounds, songs and tales of a whole island committed to socially isolating – together. With grateful thanks to the people of Tristan Da Cunha. Producer: Sara Jane Hall Archive: The Royal Society Volcanic Eruption on Tristan da Cunha, 1961 Music: as sourced by Danny Webb from 'Rogue’s Gallery' - a series of sea shanties and pirate songs. “In some ways I don’t think of my life and art as separate things, I think it’s one in the same thing,” says artist Louise Weaver when speaking of her creative pursuits. “I don’t see it as a career as much as something that is an extension of my life and would go on regardless of whether I had opportunities to exhibit or not.” With a practice spanning three decades and multiple mediums, Weaver has continuously worked both within and beyond a variety of juxtapositions: nature and culture, metamorphosis and concealment, reality and unreality, and the beautiful and the uncanny. Becoming well-known in the 90s for her crotchet animal forms, over time Weaver has created a vast array of painting, installation and sculptural works, threading interests in mythology, shamanism, the fantastic, the domestic, high fashion, art history and ecological awareness. Weaver discusses these elements in the podcast interview, and further builds upon an earlier conversation published in Art Guide’s January/February 2020 issue, which can now be found online: artguide.com.au/interview-louise-weaver-on-nature-feminism-and-crocheting-animal-forms In particular Weaver talks through her major survey exhibition 'Between appearances: the Art of Louise Weaver', showing at Buxton Contemporary, and filters through the ideas and associations that inform her tactile works. She also discusses the dream-like qualities found in her work, her studio process, how she gets beyond self-doubt, questions of gender and creativity, and what she means when she says creating art is how she relates to the world. Ray and Darren start off hitting on a number of the week's top headlines: the breaking news of Zack Kassian's 2-game suspension, Morgan Rielly being out for 8-weeks with a fractured foot, what's behind the Flames push of late, how tight the standings are in the Western Conf., Ray Shero's curious dismissal in NJ, and finally the guys dig into the top 6 teams in the EasterConf. Ray's former teammate in LA and current NHL on NBC analyst Eddie Olczyk joined and got up close and personal with the guys on a number of topics. Edzo told some awesome, hilarious stories from their time together on the Kings, including his hatred of turbulence on the team's charter flights. Eddie O also chatted on his struggles during his season as role player on the Rangers '94 Stanley Cup Championship team. Eddie was poignant talking about learning he was sick and going public in fighting his battle with stage 3 colon cancer and how it tested his will to live - and details what his 'TSN Turning Point' was thanks to his wife Diana after his second chemo treatment. In this week's edition of #ThroatPunch Darren nominates the slow retraction to the Ontario Operations Center alert about an accident at the Pickering Nuclear Facility. Ray nominates Sens player Tyler Ennis for the silly choice of risking a road hockey level move in a shootout. During 'Between the Benches' the guys get into the positive move the NHL made featuring the Women's 3 on 3 game as part of All Star weekend, talked more about the 'positive arrogance' of CBJ's standout goalie Elvis Merzlikins  and whether Ray is 'positively arrogant'. 'Ask Ray & Dregs' sees questions on what Ray believes the standard should be for a 'dirty hit', Darren and Ray's favourite memories of watching Gretz, and the guys delve into why the NHL's trade deadline has become a mostly underwhelming annual affair. Short week! Well, there's a lot to talk about in such a condensed week, especially on the Indianapolis Colts side of the equation. The team's injury report is pretty insane. The Colts actually already have 7 inactives for the game and only 52 on the roster less than 24 hours before game time. On one end, it's a plus-minus situation weekly any more and with only having four days between games, this isn't the ideal point in the season to face the Patriots by any means. The positive shining through those dark clouds: Andrew Luck is NOT on that injury report. And that means hope for this beat up roster. On the docket today we're going to discuss the Patriots' Week 4 game against the Miami Dolphins to see what we can gain from it. There were some definite trends, but on the other hand, Belichick is known to completely scrap those tendencies from one week to the next. At any rate, we also see some weaknesses and strengths alike from various positions that very well could affect what Frank Reich may attempt to dial up Thursday night. Their offense featured some very interesting personnel groupings in this one as well. What I saw from both sides of the ball in a nutshell, and how the Colts can try to combat their current situation within these matchups. In the second half of the show, I joined the guys at the Vegas Stats and Information Network on Sirius XM (@VSiNLive) last night, and they were gracious enough to allow me to use their audio on this show. We talked a little about everything including the Colts injury situation at some key positions, specifically Anthony Castonzo and if he'll play Thursday. The question of whether or not the Colts could get blown out is brought up, how to figure out the eye test with the Colts' offense with so many ups and downs also becomes a valid question going forward. Additionally, we talk about how the offense and defense have almost completely switched expectations through the first four weeks of the season and how Darius Leonard has energized this defense in the meantime. One says you have Buddha nature, the other you are Buddha nature. Alan describes what to rely on in your practice (what to take refuge in). In between sessions act as if you are in a lucid dream. He analyses how it is a miniature reproduction of the social cells of class, of status and of culture.
